The Danites Settle in Laish

NIVESVNASBKJVHCSB
In those days Israel had no king. And in those days the tribe of the Danites was seeking a place of their own where they might settle, because they had not yet come into an inheritance among the tribes of Israel.1In those days there was no king in Israel. And in those days the tribe of the people of Dan was seeking for itself an inheritance to dwell in, for until then no inheritance among the tribes of Israel had fallen to them.1In those days there was no king of Israel; and in those days the tribe of the Danites was seeking an inheritance for themselves to live in, for until that day an inheritance had not been allotted to them as a possession among the tribes of Israel.1In those days there was no king in Israel: and in those days the tribe of the Danites sought them an inheritance to dwell in; for unto that day all their inheritance had not fallen unto them among the tribes of Israel.1In those days, there was no king in Israel, and the Danite tribe was looking for territory to occupy. Up to that time no territory had been captured by them among the tribes of Israel.
So the Danites sent five of their leading men from Zorah and Eshtaol to spy out the land and explore it. These men represented all the Danites. They told them, "Go, explore the land." So they entered the hill country of Ephraim and came to the house of Micah, where they spent the night.2So the people of Dan sent five able men from the whole number of their tribe, from Zorah and from Eshtaol, to spy out the land and to explore it. And they said to them, “Go and explore the land.” And they came to the hill country of Ephraim, to the house of Micah, and lodged there.2So the sons of Dan sent from their family five men out of their whole number, valiant men from Zorah and Eshtaol, to spy out the land and to search it; and they said to them, "Go, search the land." And they came to the hill country of Ephraim, to the house of Micah, and lodged there.2And the children of Dan sent of their family five men from their coasts, men of valour, from Zorah, and from Eshtaol, to spy out the land, and to search it; and they said unto them, Go, search the land: who when they came to mount Ephraim, to the house of Micah, they lodged there.2So the Danites sent out five brave men from all their clans, from Zorah and Eshtaol, to scout out the land and explore it. They told them, "Go and explore the land." They came to the hill country of Ephraim as far as the home of Micah and spent the night there.
When they were near Micah's house, they recognized the voice of the young Levite; so they turned in there and asked him, "Who brought you here? What are you doing in this place? Why are you here?"3When they were by the house of Micah, they recognized the voice of the young Levite. And they turned aside and said to him, “Who brought you here? What are you doing in this place? What is your business here?”3When they were near the house of Micah, they recognized the voice of the young man, the Levite; and they turned aside there and said to him, "Who brought you here? And what are you doing in this place? And what do you have here?"3When they were by the house of Micah, they knew the voice of the young man the Levite: and they turned in thither, and said unto him, Who brought thee hither? and what makest thou in this place? and what hast thou here?3While they were near Micah's home, they recognized the speech of the young Levite. So they went over to him and asked, "Who brought you here? What are you doing in this place? What is keeping you here?"
He told them what Micah had done for him, and said, "He has hired me and I am his priest."4And he said to them, “This is how Micah dealt with me: he has hired me, and I have become his priest.”4He said to them, "Thus and so has Micah done to me, and he has hired me and I have become his priest."4And he said unto them, Thus and thus dealeth Micah with me, and hath hired me, and I am his priest.4He told them what Micah had done for him and that he had hired him as his priest.

Then they said to him, "Please inquire of God to learn whether our journey will be successful."5And they said to him, “Inquire of God, please, that we may know whether the journey on which we are setting out will succeed.”5They said to him, "Inquire of God, please, that we may know whether our way on which we are going will be prosperous."5And they said unto him, Ask counsel, we pray thee, of God, that we may know whether our way which we go shall be prosperous.5Then they said to him, "Please inquire of God so we will know if we will have a successful journey."
The priest answered them, "Go in peace. Your journey has the LORD's approval."6And the priest said to them, “Go in peace. The journey on which you go is under the eye of the LORD.”6The priest said to them, "Go in peace; your way in which you are going has the LORD'S approval."6And the priest said unto them, Go in peace: before the LORD is your way wherein ye go.6The priest told them, "Go in peace. The LORD is watching over the journey you are going on."
So the five men left and came to Laish, where they saw that the people were living in safety, like the Sidonians, at peace and secure. And since their land lacked nothing, they were prosperous. Also, they lived a long way from the Sidonians and had no relationship with anyone else.7Then the five men departed and came to Laish and saw the people who were there, how they lived in security, after the manner of the Sidonians, quiet and unsuspecting, lacking nothing that is in the earth and possessing wealth, and how they were far from the Sidonians and had no dealings with anyone.7Then the five men departed and came to Laish and saw the people who were in it living in security, after the manner of the Sidonians, quiet and secure; for there was no ruler humiliating them for anything in the land, and they were far from the Sidonians and had no dealings with anyone.7Then the five men departed, and came to Laish, and saw the people that were therein, how they dwelt careless, after the manner of the Zidonians, quiet and secure; and there was no magistrate in the land, that might put them to shame in any thing; and they were far from the Zidonians, and had no business with any man.7The five men left and came to Laish. They saw that the people who were there were living securely, in the same way as the Sidonians, quiet and unsuspecting. There was nothing lacking in the land and no oppressive ruler. They were far from the Sidonians, having no alliance with anyone.
When they returned to Zorah and Eshtaol, their fellow Danites asked them, "How did you find things?"8And when they came to their brothers at Zorah and Eshtaol, their brothers said to them, “What do you report?”8When they came back to their brothers at Zorah and Eshtaol, their brothers said to them, "What do you report?"8And they came unto their brethren to Zorah and Eshtaol: and their brethren said unto them, What say ye?8When the men went back to their clans at Zorah and Eshtaol, their people asked them, "What did you find out?"
They answered, "Come on, let's attack them! We have seen the land, and it is very good. Aren't you going to do something? Don't hesitate to go there and take it over.9They said, “Arise, and let us go up against them, for we have seen the land, and behold, it is very good. And will you do nothing? Do not be slow to go, to enter in and possess the land.9They said, "Arise, and let us go up against them; for we have seen the land, and behold, it is very good. And will you sit still? Do not delay to go, to enter, to possess the land.9And they said, Arise, that we may go up against them: for we have seen the land, and, behold, it is very good: and are ye still? be not slothful to go, and to enter to possess the land.9They answered, "Come on, let's go up against them, for we have seen the land, and it is very good. Why wait? Don't hesitate to go and invade and take possession of the land!

When you get there, you will find an unsuspecting people and a spacious land that God has put into your hands, a land that lacks nothing whatever."10As soon as you go, you will come to an unsuspecting people. The land is spacious, for God has given it into your hands, a place where there is no lack of anything that is in the earth.”10"When you enter, you will come to a secure people with a spacious land; for God has given it into your hand, a place where there is no lack of anything that is on the earth."10When ye go, ye shall come unto a people secure, and to a large land: for God hath given it into your hands; a place where there is no want of any thing that is in the earth.10When you get there, you will come to an unsuspecting people and a spacious land, for God has handed it over to you. It is a place where nothing on earth is lacking."
Then six hundred men of the Danites, armed for battle, set out from Zorah and Eshtaol.11So 600 men of the tribe of Dan, armed with weapons of war, set out from Zorah and Eshtaol,11Then from the family of the Danites, from Zorah and from Eshtaol, six hundred men armed with weapons of war set out.11And there went from thence of the family of the Danites, out of Zorah and out of Eshtaol, six hundred men appointed with weapons of war.11Six hundred Danites departed from Zorah and Eshtaol armed with weapons of war.
On their way they set up camp near Kiriath Jearim in Judah. This is why the place west of Kiriath Jearim is called Mahaneh Dan to this day.12and went up and encamped at Kiriath-jearim in Judah. On this account that place is called Mahaneh-dan to this day; behold, it is west of Kiriath-jearim.12They went up and camped at Kiriath-jearim in Judah. Therefore they called that place Mahaneh-dan to this day; behold, it is west of Kiriath-jearim.12And they went up, and pitched in Kirjathjearim, in Judah: wherefore they called that place Mahanehdan unto this day: behold, it is behind Kirjathjearim.12They went up and camped at Kiriath-jearim in Judah. This is why the place is called the Camp of Dan to this day; it is west of Kiriath-jearim.
From there they went on to the hill country of Ephraim and came to Micah's house.13And they passed on from there to the hill country of Ephraim, and came to the house of Micah.13They passed from there to the hill country of Ephraim and came to the house of Micah.13And they passed thence unto mount Ephraim, and came unto the house of Micah.13From there they traveled to the hill country of Ephraim and arrived at Micah's house.

Danites Take Micah's Idols

NIVESVNASBKJVHCSB
Then the five men who had spied out the land of Laish said to their fellow Danites, "Do you know that one of these houses has an ephod, some household gods and an image overlaid with silver? Now you know what to do."14Then the five men who had gone to scout out the country of Laish said to their brothers, “Do you know that in these houses there are an ephod, household gods, a carved image, and a metal image? Now therefore consider what you will do.”14Then the five men who went to spy out the country of Laish said to their kinsmen, "Do you know that there are in these houses an ephod and household idols and a graven image and a molten image? Now therefore, consider what you should do."14Then answered the five men that went to spy out the country of Laish, and said unto their brethren, Do ye know that there is in these houses an ephod, and teraphim, and a graven image, and a molten image? now therefore consider what ye have to do.14The five men who had gone to scout out the land of Laish told their brothers, "Did you know that there are an ephod, household gods, and a carved image overlaid with silver in these houses? Now think about what you should do."
So they turned in there and went to the house of the young Levite at Micah's place and greeted him.15And they turned aside there and came to the house of the young Levite, at the home of Micah, and asked him about his welfare.15They turned aside there and came to the house of the young man, the Levite, to the house of Micah, and asked him of his welfare.15And they turned thitherward, and came to the house of the young man the Levite, even unto the house of Micah, and saluted him.15So they detoured there and went to the house of the young Levite at the home of Micah and greeted him.
The six hundred Danites, armed for battle, stood at the entrance of the gate.16Now the 600 men of the Danites, armed with their weapons of war, stood by the entrance of the gate.16The six hundred men armed with their weapons of war, who were of the sons of Dan, stood by the entrance of the gate.16And the six hundred men appointed with their weapons of war, which were of the children of Dan, stood by the entering of the gate.16The 600 Danite men were standing by the entrance of the gate, armed with their weapons of war.
The five men who had spied out the land went inside and took the idol, the ephod and the household gods while the priest and the six hundred armed men stood at the entrance of the gate.17And the five men who had gone to scout out the land went up and entered and took the carved image, the ephod, the household gods, and the metal image, while the priest stood by the entrance of the gate with the 600 men armed with weapons of war.17Now the five men who went to spy out the land went up and entered there, and took the graven image and the ephod and household idols and the molten image, while the priest stood by the entrance of the gate with the six hundred men armed with weapons of war.17And the five men that went to spy out the land went up, and came in thither, and took the graven image, and the ephod, and the teraphim, and the molten image: and the priest stood in the entering of the gate with the six hundred men that were appointed with weapons of war.17Then the five men who had gone to scout out the land went in and took the carved image overlaid with silver, the ephod, and the household idols, while the priest was standing by the entrance of the gate with the 600 men armed with weapons of war.

When the five men went into Micah's house and took the idol, the ephod and the household gods, the priest said to them, "What are you doing?"18And when these went into Micah’s house and took the carved image, the ephod, the household gods, and the metal image, the priest said to them, “What are you doing?”18When these went into Micah's house and took the graven image, the ephod and household idols and the molten image, the priest said to them, "What are you doing?"18And these went into Micah's house, and fetched the carved image, the ephod, and the teraphim, and the molten image. Then said the priest unto them, What do ye?18When they entered Micah's house and took the carved image overlaid with silver, the ephod, and the household idols, the priest said to them, "What are you doing?"
They answered him, "Be quiet! Don't say a word. Come with us, and be our father and priest. Isn't it better that you serve a tribe and clan in Israel as priest rather than just one man's household?"19And they said to him, “Keep quiet; put your hand on your mouth and come with us and be to us a father and a priest. Is it better for you to be priest to the house of one man, or to be priest to a tribe and clan in Israel?”19They said to him, "Be silent, put your hand over your mouth and come with us, and be to us a father and a priest. Is it better for you to be a priest to the house of one man, or to be priest to a tribe and a family in Israel?"19And they said unto him, Hold thy peace, lay thine hand upon thy mouth, and go with us, and be to us a father and a priest: is it better for thee to be a priest unto the house of one man, or that thou be a priest unto a tribe and a family in Israel?19They told him, "Be quiet. Keep your mouth shut. Come with us and be a father and a priest to us. Is it better for you to be a priest for the house of one person or for you to be a priest for a tribe and family in Israel?"
The priest was very pleased. He took the ephod, the household gods and the idol and went along with the people.20And the priest’s heart was glad. He took the ephod and the household gods and the carved image and went along with the people.20The priest's heart was glad, and he took the ephod and household idols and the graven image and went among the people.20And the priest's heart was glad, and he took the ephod, and the teraphim, and the graven image, and went in the midst of the people.20So the priest was pleased and took his ephod, household idols, and carved image, and went with the people.
Putting their little children, their livestock and their possessions in front of them, they turned away and left.21So they turned and departed, putting the little ones and the livestock and the goods in front of them.21Then they turned and departed, and put the little ones and the livestock and the valuables in front of them.21So they turned and departed, and put the little ones and the cattle and the carriage before them.21They prepared to leave, putting their small children, livestock, and possessions in front of them.
When they had gone some distance from Micah's house, the men who lived near Micah were called together and overtook the Danites.22When they had gone a distance from the home of Micah, the men who were in the houses near Micah’s house were called out, and they overtook the people of Dan.22When they had gone some distance from the house of Micah, the men who were in the houses near Micah's house assembled and overtook the sons of Dan.22And when they were a good way from the house of Micah, the men that were in the houses near to Micah's house were gathered together, and overtook the children of Dan.22After they were some distance from Micah's house, the men who were in the houses near it mobilized and caught up with the Danites.

As they shouted after them, the Danites turned and said to Micah, "What's the matter with you that you called out your men to fight?"23And they shouted to the people of Dan, who turned around and said to Micah, “What is the matter with you, that you come with such a company?”23They cried to the sons of Dan, who turned around and said to Micah, "What is the matter with you, that you have assembled together?"23And they cried unto the children of Dan. And they turned their faces, and said unto Micah, What aileth thee, that thou comest with such a company?23They called to the Danites, who turned to face them, and said to Micah, "What's the matter with you that you mobilized the men?"
He replied, "You took the gods I made, and my priest, and went away. What else do I have? How can you ask, 'What's the matter with you?'"24And he said, “You take my gods that I made and the priest, and go away, and what have I left? How then do you ask me, ‘What is the matter with you?’”24He said, "You have taken away my gods which I made, and the priest, and have gone away, and what do I have besides? So how can you say to me, 'What is the matter with you?'"24And he said, Ye have taken away my gods which I made, and the priest, and ye are gone away: and what have I more? and what is this that ye say unto me, What aileth thee?24He said, "You took the gods I had made and the priest, and went away. What do I have left? How can you say to me, 'What's the matter with you?'"
The Danites answered, "Don't argue with us, or some of the men may get angry and attack you, and you and your family will lose your lives."25And the people of Dan said to him, “Do not let your voice be heard among us, lest angry fellows fall upon you, and you lose your life with the lives of your household.”25The sons of Dan said to him, "Do not let your voice be heard among us, or else fierce men will fall upon you and you will lose your life, with the lives of your household."25And the children of Dan said unto him, Let not thy voice be heard among us, lest angry fellows run upon thee, and thou lose thy life, with the lives of thy household.25The Danites said to him, "Don't raise your voice against us, or angry men will attack you, and you and your family will lose your lives."
So the Danites went their way, and Micah, seeing that they were too strong for him, turned around and went back home.26Then the people of Dan went their way. And when Micah saw that they were too strong for him, he turned and went back to his home.26So the sons of Dan went on their way; and when Micah saw that they were too strong for him, he turned and went back to his house.26And the children of Dan went their way: and when Micah saw that they were too strong for him, he turned and went back unto his house.26The Danites went on their way, and Micah turned to go back home, because he saw that they were stronger than he was.
Then they took what Micah had made, and his priest, and went on to Laish, against a people at peace and secure. They attacked them with the sword and burned down their city.27But the people of Dan took what Micah had made, and the priest who belonged to him, and they came to Laish, to a people quiet and unsuspecting, and struck them with the edge of the sword and burned the city with fire.27Then they took what Micah had made and the priest who had belonged to him, and came to Laish, to a people quiet and secure, and struck them with the edge of the sword; and they burned the city with fire.27And they took the things which Micah had made, and the priest which he had, and came unto Laish, unto a people that were at quiet and secure: and they smote them with the edge of the sword, and burnt the city with fire.27After they had taken the gods Micah had made and the priest that belonged to him, they went to Laish, to a quiet and unsuspecting people. They killed them with their swords and burned down the city.

There was no one to rescue them because they lived a long way from Sidon and had no relationship with anyone else. The city was in a valley near Beth Rehob. The Danites rebuilt the city and settled there.28And there was no deliverer because it was far from Sidon, and they had no dealings with anyone. It was in the valley that belongs to Beth-rehob. Then they rebuilt the city and lived in it.28And there was no one to deliver them, because it was far from Sidon and they had no dealings with anyone, and it was in the valley which is near Beth-rehob. And they rebuilt the city and lived in it.28And there was no deliverer, because it was far from Zidon, and they had no business with any man; and it was in the valley that lieth by Bethrehob. And they built a city, and dwelt therein.28There was no one to rescue them because it was far from Sidon and they had no alliance with anyone. It was in a valley that belonged to Beth-rehob. They rebuilt the city and lived in it.
They named it Dan after their ancestor Dan, who was born to Israel--though the city used to be called Laish.29And they named the city Dan, after the name of Dan their ancestor, who was born to Israel; but the name of the city was Laish at the first.29They called the name of the city Dan, after the name of Dan their father who was born in Israel; however, the name of the city formerly was Laish.29And they called the name of the city Dan, after the name of Dan their father, who was born unto Israel: howbeit the name of the city was Laish at the first.29They named the city Dan, after the name of their ancestor Dan, who was born to Israel. The city was formerly named Laish.
There the Danites set up for themselves the idol, and Jonathan son of Gershom, the son of Moses, and his sons were priests for the tribe of Dan until the time of the captivity of the land.30And the people of Dan set up the carved image for themselves, and Jonathan the son of Gershom, son of Moses, and his sons were priests to the tribe of the Danites until the day of the captivity of the land.30The sons of Dan set up for themselves the graven image; and Jonathan, the son of Gershom, the son of Manasseh, he and his sons were priests to the tribe of the Danites until the day of the captivity of the land.30And the children of Dan set up the graven image: and Jonathan, the son of Gershom, the son of Manasseh, he and his sons were priests to the tribe of Dan until the day of the captivity of the land.30The Danites set up the carved image for themselves. Jonathan son of Gershom, son of Moses, and his sons were priests for the Danite tribe until the time of the exile from the land.
They continued to use the idol Micah had made, all the time the house of God was in Shiloh.31So they set up Micah’s carved image that he made, as long as the house of God was at Shiloh.31So they set up for themselves Micah's graven image which he had made, all the time that the house of God was at Shiloh.31And they set them up Micah's graven image, which he made, all the time that the house of God was in Shiloh.31So they set up for themselves Micah's carved image that he had made, and it was there as long as the house of God was in Shiloh.
