The Second Census of Israel
(Numbers 1:1–4)

1  וַיְהִ֖י (And it came to pass) אַחֲרֵ֣י (after) הַמַּגֵּפָ֑ה פ (the plague), וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (that spoke) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) אֶל־ (to) מֹשֶׁ֔ה (Moses) וְאֶ֧ל (and) אֶלְעָזָ֛ר (Eleazar) בֶּן־ (son) אַהֲרֹ֥ן (of Aaron) הַכֹּהֵ֖ן (the priest), לֵאמֹֽר׃ (saying), 2  שְׂא֞וּ (Take) אֶת־ (-) רֹ֣אשׁ׀ (a census) כָּל־ (of all) עֲדַ֣ת (the congregation) בְּנֵי־ (of the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל (of Israel), מִבֶּ֨ן (from a son) עֶשְׂרִ֥ים (of twenty) שָׁנָ֛ה (years) וָמַ֖עְלָה (and above) לְבֵ֣ית (by the house) אֲבֹתָ֑ם (of their fathers)— כָּל־ (all) יֹצֵ֥א (who are able to go) צָבָ֖א (to war) בְּיִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (in Israel).

3  וַיְדַבֵּ֨ר (And spoke) מֹשֶׁ֜ה (Moses) וְאֶלְעָזָ֧ר (and Eleazar) הַכֹּהֵ֛ן (the priest) אֹתָ֖ם (with them) בְּעַֽרְבֹ֣ת (in the plains) מוֹאָ֑ב (of Moab) עַל־ (by) יַרְדֵּ֥ן (the Jordan) יְרֵח֖וֹ (near Jericho), לֵאמֹֽר׃ (saying), 4  מִבֶּ֛ן (From a son) עֶשְׂרִ֥ים (of twenty) שָׁנָ֖ה (years) וָמָ֑עְלָה (and above), כַּאֲשֶׁר֩ (as) צִוָּ֨ה (has commanded) יְהוָ֤ה (YHWH) אֶת־ (-) מֹשֶׁה֙ (Moses).

וּבְנֵ֣י (And the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel) הַיֹּצְאִ֖ים (who came out) מֵאֶ֥רֶץ (of the land) מִצְרָֽיִם׃ (of Egypt):

The Tribe of Reuben

5  רְאוּבֵ֖ן (Reuben) בְּכ֣וֹר (was the firstborn) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (of Israel). בְּנֵ֣י (The sons) רְאוּבֵ֗ן (of Reuben):

חֲנוֹךְ֙ (Of Hanoch) מִשְׁפַּ֣חַת (the clan) הַחֲנֹכִ֔י (of the Hanochite),

לְפַלּ֕וּא (of Pallu) מִשְׁפַּ֖חַת (the clan) הַפַּלֻּאִֽי׃ (of the Palluite),

6  לְחֶצְרֹ֕ן (of Hezron) מִשְׁפַּ֖חַת (the clan) הַֽחֶצְרוֹנִ֑י (of the Hezronite),

לְכַרְמִ֕י (of Carmi) מִשְׁפַּ֖חַת (the clan) הַכַּרְמִֽי׃ (of the Carmite).

7  אֵ֖לֶּה (These) מִשְׁפְּחֹ֣ת (are the clans) הָרֻֽאוּבֵנִ֑י (of the Reubenite), וַיִּהְי֣וּ (and were) פְקֻדֵיהֶ֗ם (those numbered) שְׁלֹשָׁ֤ה (three) וְאַרְבָּעִים֙ (and forty) אֶ֔לֶף (thousand) וּשְׁבַ֥ע (and seven) מֵא֖וֹת (hundred) וּשְׁלֹשִֽׁים׃ (and thirty).

8  וּבְנֵ֥י (And the sons) פַלּ֖וּא (of Pallu)— אֱלִיאָֽב׃ (Eliab), 9  וּבְנֵ֣י (and the sons) אֱלִיאָ֔ב (of Eliab) נְמוּאֵ֖ל (were Nemuel) וְדָתָ֣ן (and Dathan) וַאֲבִירָ֑ם (and Abiram).

הֽוּא־ (They are) דָתָ֨ן (the Dathan) וַאֲבִירָ֜ם (and Abiram), קְרוּאֵי (called) הָעֵדָ֗ה (of the congregation), אֲשֶׁ֨ר (who) הִצּ֜וּ (contended) עַל־ (against) מֹשֶׁ֤ה (Moses) וְעַֽל־ (and) אַהֲרֹן֙ (Aaron) בַּעֲדַת־ (in the company) קֹ֔רַח (of Korah) בְּהַצֹּתָ֖ם (when they contended) עַל־ (against) יְהוָֽה׃ (YHWH). 10  וַתִּפְתַּ֨ח (And opened) הָאָ֜רֶץ (the earth) אֶת־ (-) פִּ֗יהָ (its mouth), וַתִּבְלַ֥ע (and swallowed up) אֹתָ֛ם (them) וְאֶת־ (and with them) קֹ֖רַח (Korah), בְּמ֣וֹת (in the death) הָעֵדָ֑ה (of the company) בַּאֲכֹ֣ל (when devoured) הָאֵ֗שׁ (the fire) אֵ֣ת (-) חֲמִשִּׁ֤ים (fifty) וּמָאתַ֙יִם֙ (and two hundred) אִ֔ישׁ (men), וַיִּהְי֖וּ (and they became) לְנֵֽס׃ (a sign). 11  וּבְנֵי־ (And the sons) קֹ֖רַח (of Korah) לֹא־ (not) מֵֽתוּ׃ס (did die).

The Tribe of Simeon

12  בְּנֵ֣י (The sons) שִׁמְעוֹן֮ (of Simeon) לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָם֒ (by their clans):

לִנְמוּאֵ֗ל (Of Nemuel) מִשְׁפַּ֙חַת֙ (the clan) הַנְּמ֣וּאֵלִ֔י (of the Nemuelite);

לְיָמִ֕ין (of Jamin) מִשְׁפַּ֖חַת (the clan) הַיָּמִינִ֑י (of the Jaminite);

לְיָכִ֕ין (of Jachin) מִשְׁפַּ֖חַת (the clan) הַיָּכִינִֽי׃ (of the Jachinite);

13  לְזֶ֕רַח (of Zerah) מִשְׁפַּ֖חַת (the clan) הַזַּרְחִ֑י (of the Zerahite);

לְשָׁא֕וּל (of Shaul) מִשְׁפַּ֖חַת (the clan) הַשָּׁאוּלִֽי׃ (of the Shaulite).

14  אֵ֖לֶּה (These) מִשְׁפְּחֹ֣ת (are the clans) הַשִּׁמְעֹנִ֑י (of the Simeonite), שְׁנַ֧יִם (two) וְעֶשְׂרִ֛ים (and twenty) אֶ֖לֶף (thousand) וּמָאתָֽיִם׃ס (and two hundred).

The Tribe of Gad

15  בְּנֵ֣י (The sons) גָד֮ (of Gad) לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָם֒ (by their clans):

לִצְפ֗וֹן (Of Zephon) מִשְׁפַּ֙חַת֙ (the clan) הַצְּפוֹנִ֔י (of the Zephonite),

לְחַגִּ֕י (of Haggi) מִשְׁפַּ֖חַת (the clan) הַֽחַגִּ֑י (of the Haggite),

לְשׁוּנִ֕י (of Shuni) מִשְׁפַּ֖חַת (the clan) הַשּׁוּנִֽי׃ (of the Shunite),

16  לְאָזְנִ֕י (of Ozni) מִשְׁפַּ֖חַת (the clan) הָאָזְנִ֑י (of the Oznite),

לְעֵרִ֕י (of Eri) מִשְׁפַּ֖חַת (the clan) הָעֵרִֽי׃ (of the Erite),

17  לַאֲר֕וֹד (of Arod) מִשְׁפַּ֖חַת (the clan) הָאֲרוֹדִ֑י (of the Arodite),

לְאַ֨רְאֵלִ֔י (of Areli) מִשְׁפַּ֖חַת (the clan) הָאַרְאֵלִֽי׃ (of the Arelite).

18  אֵ֛לֶּה (These) מִשְׁפְּחֹ֥ת (are the clans) בְּנֵֽי־ (of the sons) גָ֖ד (of Gad) לִפְקֻדֵיהֶ֑ם (by their numbered ones), אַרְבָּעִ֥ים (forty) אֶ֖לֶף (thousand) וַחֲמֵ֥שׁ (and five) מֵאֽוֹת׃ס (hundred).

The Tribe of Judah

19  בְּנֵ֥י (The sons) יְהוּדָ֖ה (of Judah) עֵ֣ר (were Er) וְאוֹנָ֑ן (and Onan), וַיָּ֥מָת (and died) עֵ֛ר (Er) וְאוֹנָ֖ן (and Onan) בְּאֶ֥רֶץ (in the land) כְּנָֽעַן׃ (of Canaan). 20  וַיִּהְי֣וּ (And were) בְנֵי־ (the sons) יְהוּדָה֮ (of Judah) לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָם֒ (by their clans):

לְשֵׁלָ֗ה (Of Shelah) מִשְׁפַּ֙חַת֙ (the clan) הַשֵּׁ֣לָנִ֔י (of the Shelanite),

לְפֶ֕רֶץ (of Perez) מִשְׁפַּ֖חַת (the clan) הַפַּרְצִ֑י (of the Perezite),

לְזֶ֕רַח (of Zerah) מִשְׁפַּ֖חַת (the clan) הַזַּרְחִֽי׃ (of the Zerahite).

21  וַיִּהְי֣וּ (And were) בְנֵי־ (the sons) פֶ֔רֶץ (of Perez):

לְחֶצְרֹ֕ן (Of Hezron) מִשְׁפַּ֖חַת (the clan) הַֽחֶצְרֹנִ֑י (of the Hezronite),

לְחָמ֕וּל (of Hamul) מִשְׁפַּ֖חַת (the clan) הֶחָמוּלִֽי׃ (of the Hamulite).

22  אֵ֛לֶּה (These) מִשְׁפְּחֹ֥ת (were the clans) יְהוּדָ֖ה (of Judah) לִפְקֻדֵיהֶ֑ם (by their numbered one) שִׁשָּׁ֧ה (six) וְשִׁבְעִ֛ים (and seventy) אֶ֖לֶף (thousand) וַחֲמֵ֥שׁ (and five) מֵאֽוֹת׃ס (hundred).

The Tribe of Issachar

23  בְּנֵ֤י (The sons) יִשָּׂשכָר֙ (of Issachar) לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָ֔ם (by their clans):

תּוֹלָ֕ע (Of Tola) מִשְׁפַּ֖חַת (the clan) הַתּוֹלָעִ֑י (of the Tolaite),

לְפֻוָ֕ה (of Puvah) מִשְׁפַּ֖חַת (the clan) הַפּוּנִֽי׃ (of the Punite),

24  לְיָשׁ֕וּב (of Jashub) מִשְׁפַּ֖חַת (the clan) הַיָּשׁוּבִ֑י (of the Jashubite),

לְשִׁמְרֹ֕ן (of Shimron) מִשְׁפַּ֖חַת (the clan) הַשִּׁמְרֹנִֽי׃ (of the Shimronite).

25  אֵ֛לֶּה (These) מִשְׁפְּחֹ֥ת (were the clans) יִשָּׂשכָ֖ר (of Issachar) לִפְקֻדֵיהֶ֑ם (by their numbered ones), אַרְבָּעָ֧ה (four) וְשִׁשִּׁ֛ים (and sixty) אֶ֖לֶף (thousand) וּשְׁלֹ֥שׁ (and three) מֵאֽוֹת׃ס (hundred).

The Tribe of Zebulun

26  בְּנֵ֣י (The sons) זְבוּלֻן֮ (of Zebulun) לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָם֒ (by their clans):

לְסֶ֗רֶד (Of Sered) מִשְׁפַּ֙חַת֙ (the clan) הַסַּרְדִּ֔י (of the Seredite),

לְאֵל֕וֹן (of Elon) מִשְׁפַּ֖חַת (the clan) הָאֵלֹנִ֑י (of the Elonite),

לְיַ֨חְלְאֵ֔ל (of Jahleel) מִשְׁפַּ֖חַת (the clan) הַיַּחְלְאֵלִֽי׃ (of the Jahleelite).

27  אֵ֛לֶּה (These) מִשְׁפְּחֹ֥ת (were the clans) הַזְּבוּלֹנִ֖י (of the Zebulunite) לִפְקֻדֵיהֶ֑ם (by their numbered), שִׁשִּׁ֥ים (sixty) אֶ֖לֶף (thousand) וַחֲמֵ֥שׁ (and five) מֵאֽוֹת׃ס (hundred).

The Tribe of Manasseh

28  בְּנֵ֥י (The sons) יוֹסֵ֖ף (of Joseph) לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָ֑ם (by their clans): מְנַשֶּׁ֖ה (Manasseh) וְאֶפְרָֽיִם׃ (and Ephraim).

29  בְּנֵ֣י (The sons) מְנַשֶּׁ֗ה (of Manasseh):

לְמָכִיר֙ (Of Machir) מִשְׁפַּ֣חַת (the clan) הַמָּכִירִ֔י (of the Machirite), וּמָכִ֖יר (and Machir) הוֹלִ֣יד (begat) אֶת־ (-) גִּלְעָ֑ד (Gilead),

לְגִלְעָ֕ד (of Gilead) מִשְׁפַּ֖חַת (the clan) הַגִּלְעָדִֽי׃ (of the Gileadite).

30  אֵ֚לֶּה (These) בְּנֵ֣י (were the sons) גִלְעָ֔ד (of Gilead);

אִיעֶ֕זֶר (of Iezer) מִשְׁפַּ֖חַת (the clan) הָאִֽיעֶזְרִ֑י (of the Iezerite),

לְחֵ֕לֶק (of Helek) מִשְׁפַּ֖חַת (the clan) הַֽחֶלְקִֽי׃ (of the Helekite),

31  וְאַ֨שְׂרִיאֵ֔ל (and of Asriel) מִשְׁפַּ֖חַת (the clan) הָֽאַשְׂרִֽאֵלִ֑י (of the Asrielite),

וְשֶׁ֕כֶם (and of Shechem) מִשְׁפַּ֖חַת (the clan) הַשִּׁכְמִֽי׃ (of the Shechemite),

32  וּשְׁמִידָ֕ע (and of Shemida) מִשְׁפַּ֖חַת (the clan) הַשְּׁמִידָעִ֑י (of the Shemidaite),

וְחֵ֕פֶר (and of Hepher) מִשְׁפַּ֖חַת (the clan) הַֽחֶפְרִֽי׃ (of the Hepherite).

33  וּצְלָפְחָ֣ד (And Zelophehad) בֶּן־ (son) חֵ֗פֶר (of Hepher) לֹא־ (not) הָ֥יוּ (had) ל֛וֹ (to him) בָּנִ֖ים (sons), כִּ֣י (but) אִם־ (only) בָּנ֑וֹת (daughters). וְשֵׁם֙ (And the names) בְּנ֣וֹת (of the daughters) צְלָפְחָ֔ד (of Zelophehad) מַחְלָ֣ה (were Mahlah), וְנֹעָ֔ה (and Noah), חָגְלָ֥ה (Hoglah), מִלְכָּ֖ה (Milcah), וְתִרְצָֽה׃ (and Tirzah).

34  אֵ֖לֶּה (These) מִשְׁפְּחֹ֣ת (were the clans) מְנַשֶּׁ֑ה (of Manasseh), וּפְקֻ֣דֵיהֶ֔ם (and their numbered ones were) שְׁנַ֧יִם (two) וַחֲמִשִּׁ֛ים (and fifty) אֶ֖לֶף (thousand) וּשְׁבַ֥ע (and seven) מֵאֽוֹת׃ס (hundred).

The Tribe of Ephraim

35  אֵ֣לֶּה (These) בְנֵי־ (were the sons) אֶפְרַיִם֮ (of Ephraim) לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָם֒ (by their clans):

לְשׁוּתֶ֗לַח (Of Shuthelah) מִשְׁפַּ֙חַת֙ (the clan) הַשֻּׁ֣תַלְחִ֔י (of the Shuthalhite);

לְבֶ֕כֶר (of Becher) מִשְׁפַּ֖חַת (the clan) הַבַּכְרִ֑י (of the Bachrite),

לְתַ֕חַן (of Tahan) מִשְׁפַּ֖חַת (the clan) הַֽתַּחֲנִֽי׃ (of the Tahanite).

36  וְאֵ֖לֶּה (And these) בְּנֵ֣י (were the sons) שׁוּתָ֑לַח (of Shuthelah): לְעֵרָ֕ן (Of Eran) מִשְׁפַּ֖חַת (the clan) הָעֵרָנִֽי׃ (of the Eranite).

37  אֵ֣לֶּה (These) מִשְׁפְּחֹ֤ת (were the clans) בְּנֵי־ (of the sons) אֶפְרַ֙יִם֙ (of Ephraim) לִפְקֻ֣דֵיהֶ֔ם (by their numbered ones), שְׁנַ֧יִם (two) וּשְׁלֹשִׁ֛ים (and thirty) אֶ֖לֶף (thousand) וַחֲמֵ֣שׁ (and five) מֵא֑וֹת (hundred).

אֵ֥לֶּה (These) בְנֵי־ (were the sons) יוֹסֵ֖ף (of Joseph) לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָֽם׃ס (by their clans).

The Tribe of Benjamin

38  בְּנֵ֣י (The sons) בִנְיָמִן֮ (of Benjamin) לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָם֒ (by their clans):

לְבֶ֗לַע (Of Bela) מִשְׁפַּ֙חַת֙ (the clan) הַבַּלְעִ֔י (of the Belaite),

לְאַשְׁבֵּ֕ל (of Ashbel) מִשְׁפַּ֖חַת (the clan) הָֽאַשְׁבֵּלִ֑י (of the Ashbelite),

לַאֲחִירָ֕ם (of Ahiram) מִשְׁפַּ֖חַת (the clan) הָאֲחִירָמִֽי׃ (of the Ahiramite),

39  לִשְׁפוּפָ֕ם (of Shupham) מִשְׁפַּ֖חַת (the clan) הַשּׁוּפָמִ֑י (of the Shuphamite),

לְחוּפָ֕ם (of Hupham) מִשְׁפַּ֖חַת (the clan) הַחוּפָמִֽי׃ (of the Huphamite).

40  וַיִּהְי֥וּ (And were) בְנֵי־ (the sons) בֶ֖לַע (of Bela) אַ֣רְדְּ (Ard) וְנַעֲמָ֑ן (and Naaman): מִשְׁפַּ֙חַת֙ (The clan) הָֽאַרְדִּ֔י (of the Ardite), לְנַֽעֲמָ֔ן (of Naaman) מִשְׁפַּ֖חַת (the clan) הַֽנַּעֲמִֽי׃ (of the Naamite).

41  אֵ֥לֶּה (These) בְנֵי־ (are the sons) בִנְיָמִ֖ן (of Benjamin) לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָ֑ם (by their clans), וּפְקֻ֣דֵיהֶ֔ם (and their numbered ones were) חֲמִשָּׁ֧ה (five) וְאַרְבָּעִ֛ים (and forty) אֶ֖לֶף (thousand) וְשֵׁ֥שׁ (and six) מֵאֽוֹת׃ס (hundred).

The Tribe of Dan

42  אֵ֤לֶּה (These) בְנֵי־ (were the sons) דָן֙ (of Dan) לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָ֔ם (by their clans):

לְשׁוּחָ֕ם (Of Shuham) מִשְׁפַּ֖חַת (the clan) הַשּׁוּחָמִ֑י (of the Shuhamite).

אֵ֛לֶּה (These) מִשְׁפְּחֹ֥ת (were the clans) דָּ֖ן (of Dan) לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָֽם׃ (by their clans). 43  כָּל־ (All) מִשְׁפְּחֹ֥ת (the clans) הַשּׁוּחָמִ֖י (of the Shuhamite) לִפְקֻדֵיהֶ֑ם (by their numbered ones were) אַרְבָּעָ֧ה (four) וְשִׁשִּׁ֛ים (and sixty) אֶ֖לֶף (thousand) וְאַרְבַּ֥ע (and four) מֵאֽוֹת׃ס (hundred).

The Tribe of Asher

44  בְּנֵ֣י (The sons) אָשֵׁר֮ (of Asher) לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָם֒ (by their clans):

לְיִמְנָ֗ה (Of Imnah) מִשְׁפַּ֙חַת֙ (the clan) הַיִּמְנָ֔ה (of the Imnite)

לְיִשְׁוִ֕י (of Ishvi), מִשְׁפַּ֖חַת (the clan) הַיִּשְׁוִ֑י (of the Ishvite),

לִבְרִיעָ֕ה (of Beriah) מִשְׁפַּ֖חַת (the clan) הַבְּרִיעִֽי׃ (of the Beriites).

45  לִבְנֵ֣י (Of the sons) בְרִיעָ֔ה (of Beriah):

לְחֶ֕בֶר (Of Heber) מִשְׁפַּ֖חַת (the clan) הַֽחֶבְרִ֑י (of the Heberite),

לְמַ֨לְכִּיאֵ֔ל (of Malchiel) מִשְׁפַּ֖חַת (the clan) הַמַּלְכִּיאֵלִֽי׃ (of the Malchielite).

46  וְשֵׁ֥ם (And the name) בַּת־ (of the daughter) אָשֵׁ֖ר (of Asher) שָֽׂרַח׃ (was Serah).

47  אֵ֛לֶּה (These) מִשְׁפְּחֹ֥ת (were the clans) בְּנֵי־ (of the sons) אָשֵׁ֖ר (of Asher) לִפְקֻדֵיהֶ֑ם (by their numbered ones), שְׁלֹשָׁ֧ה (three) וַחֲמִשִּׁ֛ים (and fifty) אֶ֖לֶף (thousand) וְאַרְבַּ֥ע (and four) מֵאֽוֹת׃ס (hundred).

The Tribe of Naphtali

48  בְּנֵ֤י (The sons) נַפְתָּלִי֙ (of Naphtali) לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָ֔ם (by their clans):

לְיַ֨חְצְאֵ֔ל (Of Jahzeel) מִשְׁפַּ֖חַת (the clan) הַיַּחְצְאֵלִ֑י (of the Jahzeelite),

לְגוּנִ֕י (of Guni) מִשְׁפַּ֖חַת (the clan) הַגּוּנִֽי׃ (of the Gunite),

49  לְיֵ֕צֶר (of Jezer) מִשְׁפַּ֖חַת (the clan) הַיִּצְרִ֑י (of the Jezerite),

לְשִׁלֵּ֕ם (of Shillem) מִשְׁפַּ֖חַת (the clan) הַשִּׁלֵּמִֽי׃ (of the Shillemite).

50  אֵ֛לֶּה (These) מִשְׁפְּחֹ֥ת (were the clans) נַפְתָּלִ֖י (of Naphtali) לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָ֑ם (by their clans); וּפְקֻ֣דֵיהֶ֔ם (and their numbered ones were) חֲמִשָּׁ֧ה (five) וְאַרְבָּעִ֛ים (and forty) אֶ֖לֶף (thousand) וְאַרְבַּ֥ע (and four) מֵאֽוֹת׃ (hundred).

51  אֵ֗לֶּה (These were) פְּקוּדֵי֙ (numbered ones) בְּנֵ֣י (of the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel), שֵׁשׁ־ (six) מֵא֥וֹת (hundred) אֶ֖לֶף (thousand) וָאָ֑לֶף (and a thousand) שְׁבַ֥ע (seven) מֵא֖וֹת (hundred) וּשְׁלֹשִֽׁים׃פ (and thirty).

52  וַיְדַבֵּ֥ר (And spoke) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) אֶל־ (to) מֹשֶׁ֥ה (Moses), לֵּאמֹֽר׃ (saying), 53  לָאֵ֗לֶּה (To these) תֵּחָלֵ֥ק (shall be divided) הָאָ֛רֶץ (the land) בְּנַחֲלָ֖ה (as an inheritance) בְּמִסְפַּ֥ר (by the number) שֵׁמֽוֹת׃ (of names). 54  לָרַ֗ב (To the many) תַּרְבֶּה֙ (you shall increase) נַחֲלָת֔וֹ (their inheritance), וְלַמְעַ֕ט (and to the few) תַּמְעִ֖יט (you shall diminish) נַחֲלָת֑וֹ (their inheritance); אִ֚ישׁ (each) לְפִ֣י (according to) פְקֻדָ֔יו (their numbered) יֻתַּ֖ן (shall be given) נַחֲלָתֽוֹ׃ (its inheritance).

55  אַךְ־ (But) בְּגוֹרָ֕ל (by lot) יֵחָלֵ֖ק (shall be divided) אֶת־ (-) הָאָ֑רֶץ (the land); לִשְׁמ֥וֹת (by the names) מַטּוֹת־ (of the tribes) אֲבֹתָ֖ם (of their fathers) יִנְחָֽלוּ׃ (they shall inherit). 56  עַל־ (According to) פִּי֙ (mouth) הַגּוֹרָ֔ל (the lot) תֵּחָלֵ֖ק (shall be divided) נַחֲלָת֑וֹ (their inheritance) בֵּ֥ין (between) רַ֖ב (many) לִמְעָֽט׃ס (and few).

The Levites Numbered

57  וְאֵ֨לֶּה (And these) פְקוּדֵ֣י (are the numbered ones) הַלֵּוִי֮ (of the Levite) לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָם֒ (by their clans):

לְגֵרְשׁ֗וֹן (Of Gershon) מִשְׁפַּ֙חַת֙ (the clan) הַגֵּ֣רְשֻׁנִּ֔י (of the Gershonite),

לִקְהָ֕ת (of Kohath) מִשְׁפַּ֖חַת (the clan) הַקְּהָתִ֑י (of the Kohathite),

לִמְרָרִ֕י (of Merari) מִשְׁפַּ֖חַת (the clan) הַמְּרָרִֽי׃ (of the Merarite).

58  אֵ֣לֶּה׀ (These) מִשְׁפְּחֹ֣ת (are the clans) לֵוִ֗י (of Levi):

מִשְׁפַּ֨חַת (The clan) הַלִּבְנִ֜י (of the Libnite),

מִשְׁפַּ֤חַת (the clan) הַֽחֶבְרֹנִי֙ (of the Hebronite),

מִשְׁפַּ֤חַת (the clan) הַמַּחְלִי֙ (of the Mahlite),

מִשְׁפַּ֣חַת (the clan) הַמּוּשִׁ֔י (of the Mushite),

מִשְׁפַּ֖חַת (and the clan) הַקָּרְחִ֑י (of the Korahite).

וּקְהָ֖ת (And Kohath) הוֹלִ֥ד (begat) אֶת־ (-) עַמְרָֽם׃ (Amram). 59  וְשֵׁ֣ם׀ (And the name) אֵ֣שֶׁת (of the wife) עַמְרָ֗ם (of Amram) יוֹכֶ֙בֶד֙ (was Jochebed), בַּת־ (the daughter) לֵוִ֔י (of Levi), אֲשֶׁ֨ר (who) יָלְדָ֥ה (was born) אֹתָ֛הּ (-) לְלֵוִ֖י (to Levi) בְּמִצְרָ֑יִם (in Egypt). וַתֵּ֣לֶד (And she bore) לְעַמְרָ֗ם (to Amram) אֶֽת־ (-) אַהֲרֹן֙ (Aaron) וְאֶת־ (and) מֹשֶׁ֔ה (Moses) וְאֵ֖ת (and) מִרְיָ֥ם (Miriam) אֲחֹתָֽם׃ (their sister). 60  וַיִּוָּלֵ֣ד (And were born) לְאַהֲרֹ֔ן (to Aaron) אֶת־ (-) נָדָ֖ב (Nadab) וְאֶת־ (and) אֲבִיה֑וּא (Abihu), אֶת־ (-) אֶלְעָזָ֖ר (Eleazar) וְאֶת־ (and) אִיתָמָֽר׃ (Ithamar). 61  וַיָּ֥מָת (And died) נָדָ֖ב (Nadab) וַאֲבִיה֑וּא (and Abihu) בְּהַקְרִיבָ֥ם (when they offered) אֵשׁ־ (fire) זָרָ֖ה (strange) לִפְנֵ֥י (before the face of) יְהוָֽה׃ (YHWH).

62  וַיִּהְי֣וּ (And were) פְקֻדֵיהֶ֗ם (their numbered ones) שְׁלֹשָׁ֤ה (three) וְעֶשְׂרִים֙ (and twenty) אֶ֔לֶף (thousand), כָּל־ (every) זָכָ֖ר (male) מִבֶּן־ (from a son) חֹ֣דֶשׁ (of a month) וָמָ֑עְלָה (and above); כִּ֣י׀ (for) לֹ֣א (not) הָתְפָּקְד֗וּ (they were numbered) בְּתוֹךְ֙ (in the midst) בְּנֵ֣י (of the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel), כִּ֠י (because) לֹא־ (not) נִתַּ֤ן (there was given) לָהֶם֙ (to them) נַחֲלָ֔ה (an inheritance) בְּת֖וֹךְ (in the midst) בְּנֵ֥י (of the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (of Israel).

Only Caleb and Joshua Remain

63  אֵ֚לֶּה (These) פְּקוּדֵ֣י (were numbered) מֹשֶׁ֔ה (by Moses) וְאֶלְעָזָ֖ר (and Eleazar) הַכֹּהֵ֑ן (the priest), אֲשֶׁ֨ר (who) פָּֽקְד֜וּ (numbered) אֶת־ (-) בְּנֵ֤י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ (of Israel) בְּעַֽרְבֹ֣ת (in the plains) מוֹאָ֔ב (of Moab) עַ֖ל (by) יַרְדֵּ֥ן (the Jordan) יְרֵחֽוֹ׃ (opposite Jericho).

64  וּבְאֵ֙לֶּה֙ (And among these) לֹא־ (not) הָ֣יָה (there was) אִ֔ישׁ (a man) מִפְּקוּדֵ֣י (of those numbered) מֹשֶׁ֔ה (by Moses) וְאַהֲרֹ֖ן (and Aaron) הַכֹּהֵ֑ן (the priest) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (when) פָּקְד֛וּ (they numbered) אֶת־ (-) בְּנֵ֥י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (of Israel) בְּמִדְבַּ֥ר (in the Wilderness) סִינָֽי׃ (of Sinai). 65  כִּֽי־ (For) אָמַ֤ר (had said) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) לָהֶ֔ם (of them): מ֥וֹת (Dying) יָמֻ֖תוּ (they will die) בַּמִּדְבָּ֑ר (in the wilderness). וְלֹא־ (And not) נוֹתַ֤ר (there was left) מֵהֶם֙ (of them) אִ֔ישׁ (a man) כִּ֚י (except) אִם־ (if) כָּלֵ֣ב (Caleb) בֶּן־ (son) יְפֻנֶּ֔ה (of Jephunneh) וִיהוֹשֻׁ֖עַ (and Joshua) בִּן־ (son) נֽוּן׃ס (of Nun).
