The Case against Israel

1  שִׁמְעוּ־ (Hear) נָ֕א (now) אֵ֥ת (-) אֲשֶׁר־ (what) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) אֹמֵ֑ר (is saying);

ק֚וּם (Arise), רִ֣יב (dispute) אֶת־ (with) הֶהָרִ֔ים (the mountains),

וְתִשְׁמַ֥עְנָה (and let hear) הַגְּבָע֖וֹת (the hills) קוֹלֶֽךָ׃ (your voice).

2  שִׁמְע֤וּ (Hear) הָרִים֙ (O mountains), אֶת־ (-) רִ֣יב (the dispute), יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH)

וְהָאֵתָנִ֖ים (and you enduring) מֹ֣סְדֵי (foundations) אָ֑רֶץ (of the earth),

כִּ֣י (for) רִ֤יב (a dispute) לַֽיהוָה֙ (is unto YHWH) עִם־ (against) עַמּ֔וֹ (His people),

וְעִם־ (and against) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (Israel) יִתְוַכָּֽח׃ (He will argue).

3  עַמִּ֛י (My people), מֶה־ (what) עָשִׂ֥יתִי (have I done) לְךָ֖ (to you)

וּמָ֣ה (and how) הֶלְאֵתִ֑יךָ (have I wearied you)

עֲנֵ֥ה (Answer) בִּֽי׃ (Me).

4  כִּ֤י (For) הֶעֱלִתִ֙יךָ֙ (I brought you up) מֵאֶ֣רֶץ (from the land) מִצְרַ֔יִם (of Egypt),

וּמִבֵּ֥ית (and from the house) עֲבָדִ֖ים (of slavery);

פְּדִיתִ֑יךָ (I redeemed you)

וָאֶשְׁלַ֣ח (and I sent) לְפָנֶ֔יךָ (before you) אֶת־ (-) מֹשֶׁ֖ה (Moses), אַהֲרֹ֥ן (Aaron), וּמִרְיָֽם׃ (and Miriam).

5  עַמִּ֗י (My people), זְכָר־ (remember) נָא֙ (please) מַה־ (what) יָּעַ֗ץ (counseled), בָּלָק֙ (Balak) מֶ֣לֶךְ (king) מוֹאָ֔ב (of Moab)

וּמֶה־ (and what) עָנָ֥ה (answered) אֹת֖וֹ (him) בִּלְעָ֣ם (Balaam) בֶּן־ (son) בְּע֑וֹר (of Beor)

מִן־ (from) הַשִּׁטִּים֙ (Shittim) עַד־ (unto) הַגִּלְגָּ֔ל (Gilgal);

לְמַ֕עַן (so that) דַּ֖עַת (you may know) צִדְק֥וֹת (the righteous acts) יְהוָֽה׃ (of YHWH).

6  בַּמָּה֙ (With what) אֲקַדֵּ֣ם (will I come before) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH),

אִכַּ֖ף (and bow myself) לֵאלֹהֵ֣י (before God)? מָר֑וֹם (Most High)

הַאֲקַדְּמֶ֣נּוּ (will I come before Him) בְעוֹל֔וֹת (with burnt offerings),

בַּעֲגָלִ֖ים (with calves) בְּנֵ֥י (sons) שָׁנָֽה׃ (of a year)?

7  הֲיִרְצֶ֤ה (Will be pleased) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) בְּאַלְפֵ֣י (with thousands) אֵילִ֔ים (of rams),

בְּרִֽבְב֖וֹת (with myriad) נַֽחֲלֵי־ (rivers) שָׁ֑מֶן (of oil)?

הַאֶתֵּ֤ן (Will I give) בְּכוֹרִי֙ (for my transgression) פִּשְׁעִ֔י (for my transgression),

פְּרִ֥י (the fruit) בִטְנִ֖י (of my body) חַטַּ֥את (for the sin) נַפְשִֽׁי׃ (of my soul)?

8  הִגִּ֥יד (He has shown) לְךָ֛ (to you) אָדָ֖ם (O man), מַה־ (what is) טּ֑וֹב (good);

וּמָֽה־ (and what) יְהוָ֞ה (YHWH) דּוֹרֵ֣שׁ (does seek) מִמְּךָ֗ (from you)

כִּ֣י (but) אִם־ (-) עֲשׂ֤וֹת (to do) מִשְׁפָּט֙ (justice), וְאַ֣הֲבַת (and to love) חֶ֔סֶד (kindness),

וְהַצְנֵ֥עַ (and to be humble) לֶ֖כֶת (to walk) עִם־ (with) אֱלֹהֶֽיךָ׃פ (your God)?

The Punishment of Israel

9  ק֤וֹל (The voice) יְהוָה֙ (of YHWH) לָעִ֣יר (to the city), יִקְרָ֔א (calls)

וְתוּשִׁיָּ֖ה (and wisdom) יִרְאֶ֣ה (fears) שְׁמֶ֑ךָ (Your name);

שִׁמְע֥וּ (Heed) מַטֶּ֖ה (the rod),

וּמִ֥י (and the One who) יְעָדָֽהּ׃ (has appointed it).

10  ע֗וֹד (Yet) הַאִשׁ֙ (are there)

בֵּ֣ית (O house) רָשָׁ֔ע (of the wicked),

אֹצְר֖וֹת (the treasures) רֶ֑שַׁע (of wickedness)

וְאֵיפַ֥ת (and the ephah) רָז֖וֹן (of leanness) זְעוּמָֽה׃ (which is accursed)?

11  הַאֶזְכֶּ֖ה (Shall I count pure) בְּמֹ֣אזְנֵי (one with scales), רֶ֑שַׁע (of wickedness)

וּבְכִ֖יס (and with a bag) אַבְנֵ֥י (of weights) מִרְמָֽה׃ (of deceit)?

12  אֲשֶׁ֤ר (How) עֲשִׁירֶ֙יהָ֙ (her rich men)

מָלְא֣וּ (are full) חָמָ֔ס (of violence),

וְיֹשְׁבֶ֖יהָ (and her dwellers) דִּבְּרוּ־ (have spoken) שָׁ֑קֶר (deception),

וּלְשׁוֹנָ֖ם (and their tongue) רְמִיָּ֥ה (is deceitful) בְּפִיהֶֽם׃ (in their mouth).

13  וְגַם־ (So also) אֲנִ֖י (I) הֶחֱלֵ֣יתִי (will make you sick) הַכּוֹתֶ֑ךָ (by striking you)

הַשְׁמֵ֖ם (to make you desolate) עַל־ (over) חַטֹּאתֶֽךָ׃ (your sins).

14  אַתָּ֤ה (You) תֹאכַל֙ (will eat), וְלֹ֣א (not) תִשְׂבָּ֔ע (will you be satisfied);

וְיֶשְׁחֲךָ֖ (your emptiness is) בְּקִרְבֶּ֑ךָ (in your entrails)

וְתַסֵּג֙ (you will put away), וְלֹ֣א (not) תַפְלִ֔יט (will you save);

וַאֲשֶׁ֥ר (and what) תְּפַלֵּ֖ט (you save) לַחֶ֥רֶב (to the sword) אֶתֵּֽן׃ (I will give).

15  אַתָּ֥ה (You) תִזְרַ֖ע (will sow), וְלֹ֣א (not) תִקְצ֑וֹר (will you reap);

אַתָּ֤ה (you) תִדְרֹֽךְ־ (will tread) זַ֙יִת֙ (the olives), וְלֹא־ (not) תָס֣וּךְ (will you anoint yourselves) שֶׁ֔מֶן (with oil);

וְתִיר֖וֹשׁ (and new wine), וְלֹ֥א (not) תִשְׁתֶּה־ (will you drink) יָּֽיִן׃ (the wine).

16  וְיִשְׁתַּמֵּ֞ר (And are kept), חֻקּ֣וֹת (the statutes) עָמְרִ֗י (of Omri)

וְכֹל֙ (and all) מַעֲשֵׂ֣ה (the works) בֵית־ (of house) אַחְאָ֔ב (of Ahab),

וַתֵּלְכ֖וּ (and you⁺ walk) בְּמֹֽעֲצוֹתָ֑ם (by their counsels);

לְמַעַן֩ (Therefore) תִּתִּ֨י (I will give) אֹתְךָ֜ (you) לְשַׁמָּ֗ה (to desolation),

וְיֹשְׁבֶ֙יהָ֙ (and your dwellers) לִשְׁרֵקָ֔ה (to hissing),

וְחֶרְפַּ֥ת (and the scorn) עַמִּ֖י (of My people) תִּשָּֽׂאוּ׃פ (you⁺ will bear).
