A Ruler from Bethlehem
(Matthew 2:1–12)
1 עַתָּה֙ (Now) תִּתְגֹּדְדִ֣י (mobilize your troops),
בַת־ (O daughter) גְּד֔וּד (of a troop);
מָצ֖וֹר (a siege) שָׂ֣ם (he has laid) עָלֵ֑ינוּ (against us)
בַּשֵּׁ֙בֶט֙ (with a rod) יַכּ֣וּ (they will strike) עַֽל־ (on) הַלְּחִ֔י (the cheek). אֵ֖ת (-)
שֹׁפֵ֥ט (the judge) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ס (of Israel).
2 וְאַתָּ֞ה (And you), בֵּֽית־ (Beth-) לֶ֣חֶם (lehem) אֶפְרָ֗תָה (Ephrathah),
צָעִיר֙ (small) לִֽהְיוֹת֙ (being) בְּאַלְפֵ֣י (among the thousands) יְהוּדָ֔ה (of Judah),
מִמְּךָ֙ (from you) לִ֣י (unto Me) יֵצֵ֔א (will come forth)
לִֽהְי֥וֹת (One to be) מוֹשֵׁ֖ל (Ruler) בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (in Israel);
וּמוֹצָאֹתָ֥יו (and his goings forth are) מִקֶּ֖דֶם (of old),
מִימֵ֥י (from) עוֹלָֽם׃ (everlasting).
3 לָכֵ֣ן (Therefore) יִתְּנֵ֔ם (He will give them up),
עַד־ (until) עֵ֥ת (the time) יוֹלֵדָ֖ה (the one giving birth) יָלָ֑דָה (has given birth);
וְיֶ֣תֶר (and the remnant) אֶחָ֔יו (of his brothers) יְשׁוּב֖וּן (will return)
עַל־ (to) בְּנֵ֥י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (of Israel).
4 וְעָמַ֗ד (And he will stand) וְרָעָה֙ (and pasture them)
בְּעֹ֣ז (in the strength) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH)
בִּגְא֕וֹן (in the majesty) שֵׁ֖ם (of the name) יְהוָ֣ה (of YHWH) אֱלֹהָ֑יו (his God);
וְיָשָׁ֕בוּ (and they will dwell securely),
כִּֽי־ (for) עַתָּ֥ה (now) יִגְדַּ֖ל (he will be great)
עַד־ (as far as) אַפְסֵי־ (the ends) אָֽרֶץ׃ (of the earth).
5 וְהָיָ֥ה (And will be) זֶ֖ה (this one) שָׁל֑וֹם (our peace),
אַשּׁ֣וּר׀ (Assyria) כִּֽי־ (when) יָב֣וֹא (he comes) בְאַרְצֵ֗נוּ (into our land),
וְכִ֤י (and) יִדְרֹךְ֙ (treads) בְּאַרְמְנֹתֵ֔ינוּ (in our citadels),
וַהֲקֵמֹ֤נוּ (and we will raise) עָלָיו֙ (against him) שִׁבְעָ֣ה (seven) רֹעִ֔ים (shepherds),
וּשְׁמֹנָ֖ה (and eight) נְסִיכֵ֥י (princes) אָדָֽם׃ (of mankind).
6 וְרָע֞וּ (And they will shepherd) אֶת־ (against) אֶ֤רֶץ (the land) אַשּׁוּר֙ (of Assyria) בַּחֶ֔רֶב (with the sword),
וְאֶת־ (and against) אֶ֥רֶץ (the land) נִמְרֹ֖ד (of Nimrod) בִּפְתָחֶ֑יהָ (at its entrances)
וְהִצִּיל֙ (and He will deliver us) מֵֽאַשּׁ֔וּר (from Assyria),
כִּֽי־ (when) יָב֣וֹא (he comes) בְאַרְצֵ֔נוּ (into our land),
וְכִ֥י (and) יִדְרֹ֖ךְ (treads) בִּגְבוּלֵֽנוּ׃ס (within our borders).
The Remnant of Jacob
(Micah 2:12–13)
7 וְהָיָ֣ה׀ (And will be) שְׁאֵרִ֣ית (the remnant) יַעֲקֹ֗ב (of Jacob)
בְּקֶ֙רֶב֙ (in the midst) עַמִּ֣ים (of peoples) רַבִּ֔ים (many)
כְּטַל֙ (like dew) מֵאֵ֣ת (from) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH),
כִּרְבִיבִ֖ים (like showers) עֲלֵי־ (on) עֵ֑שֶׂב (the grass),
אֲשֶׁ֤ר (that) לֹֽא־ (not) יְקַוֶּה֙ (wait) לְאִ֔ישׁ (for man),
וְלֹ֥א (and not) יְיַחֵ֖ל (linger) לִבְנֵ֥י (for the sons) אָדָֽם׃ (of man).
8 וְהָיָה֩ (And will be) שְׁאֵרִ֨ית (the remnant) יַעֲקֹ֜ב (of Jacob) בַּגּוֹיִ֗ם (among the nations)
בְּקֶ֙רֶב֙ (in the midst) עַמִּ֣ים (of peoples) רַבִּ֔ים (many)
כְּאַרְיֵה֙ (like a lion) בְּבַהֲמ֣וֹת (among the beasts) יַ֔עַר (of the forest),
כִּכְפִ֖יר (like a young lion) בְּעֶדְרֵי (among flocks) צֹ֑אן (of sheep),
אֲשֶׁ֧ר (who), אִם (if) עָבַ֛ר (he passes through), וְרָמַ֥ס (both treads down), וְטָרַ֖ף (and tears to pieces),
וְאֵ֥ין (and there is no one) מַצִּֽיל׃ (delivering).
9 תָּרֹ֥ם (Will be lifted) יָדְךָ֖ (your hand) עַל־ (against) צָרֶ֑יךָ (your adversaries),
וְכָל־ (and all) אֹיְבֶ֖יךָ (your enemies) יִכָּרֵֽתוּ׃פ (will be cut off).
10 וְהָיָ֤ה (And it will come to pass) בַיּוֹם־ (on the day), הַהוּא֙ (in that)
נְאֻם־ (a declaration) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH),
וְהִכְרַתִּ֥י (That I will cut off) סוּסֶ֖יךָ (your horses) מִקִּרְבֶּ֑ךָ (from among you)
וְהַאֲבַדְתִּ֖י (and I will destroy) מַרְכְּבֹתֶֽיךָ׃ (your chariots).
11 וְהִכְרַתִּ֖י (And I will cut off) עָרֵ֣י (the cities) אַרְצֶ֑ךָ (of your land),
וְהָרַסְתִּ֖י (and I will tear down) כָּל־ (all) מִבְצָרֶֽיךָ׃ (your strongholds).
12 וְהִכְרַתִּ֥י (And I will cut off) כְשָׁפִ֖ים (sorcery) מִיָּדֶ֑ךָ (from your hand);
וּֽמְעוֹנְנִ֖ים (and those practicing divination); לֹ֥א (not) יִֽהְיוּ־ (will be) לָֽךְ׃ (unto you).
13 וְהִכְרַתִּ֧י (And I will cut off), פְסִילֶ֛יךָ (your carved images)
וּמַצֵּבוֹתֶ֖יךָ (and your sacred pillars) מִקִּרְבֶּ֑ךָ (from among you)
וְלֹֽא־ (and not) תִשְׁתַּחֲוֶ֥ה (will you bow down) ע֖וֹד (anymore)
לְמַעֲשֵׂ֥ה (to the work) יָדֶֽיךָ׃ (of your hands).
14 וְנָתַשְׁתִּ֥י (And I will pluck up) אֲשֵׁירֶ֖יךָ (your Asherah poles) מִקִּרְבֶּ֑ךָ (from among you)
וְהִשְׁמַדְתִּ֖י (and I will destroy) עָרֶֽיךָ׃ (your cities).
15 וְעָשִׂ֜יתִי (And I will execute) בְּאַ֧ף (in anger) וּבְחֵמָ֛ה (and in fury) נָקָ֖ם (vengeance)
אֶת־ (on) הַגּוֹיִ֑ם (the nations), אֲשֶׁ֖ר (who) לֹ֥א (not) שָׁמֵֽעוּ׃ס (would listen).
