Conquest of the Northern Cities

1  וַיְהִ֕י (And it came to pass), כִּשְׁמֹ֖עַ (heard) יָבִ֣ין (that Jabin) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (king) חָצ֑וֹר (of Hazor), וַיִּשְׁלַ֗ח (and he sent) אֶל־ (to) יוֹבָב֙ (Jobab) מֶ֣לֶךְ (king) מָד֔וֹן (of Madon), וְאֶל־ (and to) מֶ֥לֶךְ (the king) שִׁמְר֖וֹן (of Shimron), וְאֶל־ (and to) מֶ֥לֶךְ (the king) אַכְשָֽׁף׃ (of Achshaph), 2  וְֽאֶל־ (and to) הַמְּלָכִ֞ים (the kings) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (who were) מִצְּפ֗וֹן (from the north) בָּהָ֧ר (in the hill country), וּבָעֲרָבָ֛ה (and in the plain) נֶ֥גֶב (south) כִּֽנֲר֖וֹת (of Chinnereth), וּבַשְּׁפֵלָ֑ה (and in the Shephelah), וּבְנָפ֥וֹת (and in Naphoth-) דּ֖וֹר (dor) מִיָּֽם׃ (on the west), 3  הַֽכְּנַעֲנִי֙ (to the Canaanite) מִמִּזְרָ֣ח (in the east) וּמִיָּ֔ם (and in the west), וְהָאֱמֹרִ֧י (and the Amorite), וְהַחִתִּ֛י (and the Hittite), וְהַפְּרִזִּ֥י (and the Perizzite), וְהַיְבוּסִ֖י (and the Jebusite) בָּהָ֑ר (in the hill country), וְהַֽחִוִּי֙ (and the Hivite) תַּ֣חַת (below) חֶרְמ֔וֹן (Hermon) בְּאֶ֖רֶץ (in the land) הַמִּצְפָּֽה׃ (of Mizpah).

4  וַיֵּצְא֣וּ (And they went out), הֵ֗ם (they) וְכָל־ (and all) מַֽחֲנֵיהֶם֙ (their armies) עִמָּ֔ם (with them), עַם־ (a people) רָ֕ב (as numerous) כַּח֛וֹל (as the sand) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) עַל־ (is on) שְׂפַת־ (the shore) הַיָּ֖ם (of the sea) לָרֹ֑ב (in multitude), וְס֥וּס (and a horse) וָרֶ֖כֶב (and a chariot) רַב־ (many) מְאֹֽד׃ (very). 5  וַיִּוָּ֣עֲד֔וּ (And met together) כֹּ֖ל (all) הַמְּלָכִ֣ים (the kings) הָאֵ֑לֶּה (these), וַיָּבֹ֜אוּ (and they came) וַיַּחֲנ֤וּ (and camped) יַחְדָּו֙ (together) אֶל־ (at) מֵ֣י (the waters) מֵר֔וֹם (of Merom) לְהִלָּחֵ֖ם (to fight) עִם־ (against) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃פ (Israel).

6  וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (And said) יְהוָ֣ה (YHWH) אֶל־ (to) יְהוֹשֻׁעַ֮ (Joshua), אַל־ (Not) תִּירָ֣א (do be afraid) מִפְּנֵיהֶם֒ (because of them), כִּֽי־ (for) מָחָ֞ר (tomorrow) כָּעֵ֣ת (about the time) הַזֹּ֗את (this), אָנֹכִ֞י (I) נֹתֵ֧ן (will deliver) אֶת־ (-) כֻּלָּ֛ם (all of them) חֲלָלִ֖ים (slain) לִפְנֵ֣י (before the face of) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (Israel). אֶת־ (-) סוּסֵיהֶ֣ם (their horses) תְּעַקֵּ֔ר (you shall hamstring) וְאֶת־ (and) מַרְכְּבֹתֵיהֶ֖ם (their chariots) תִּשְׂרֹ֥ף (you shall burn) בָּאֵֽשׁ׃ (with the fire).

7  וַיָּבֹ֣א (And came) יְהוֹשֻׁ֡עַ (Joshua) וְכָל־ (and all) עַם֩ (the people) הַמִּלְחָמָ֨ה (of war) עִמּ֧וֹ (with him) עֲלֵיהֶ֛ם (against them) עַל־ (by) מֵ֥י (the waters) מֵר֖וֹם (of Merom) פִּתְאֹ֑ם (suddenly), וַֽיִּפְּל֖וּ (and they attacked) בָּהֶֽם׃ (them). 8  וַיִּתְּנֵ֨ם (And delivered them) יְהוָ֥ה (YHWH) בְּיַֽד־ (into the hand) יִשְׂרָאֵל֮ (of Israel), וַיַּכּוּם֒ (and they struck them down) וַֽיִּרְדְּפ֞וּם (and they chased them) עַד־ (to) צִיד֣וֹן (Sidon) רַבָּ֗ה (Greater) וְעַד֙ (and to) מִשְׂרְפ֣וֹת (Misrephoth-) מַ֔יִם (maim), וְעַד־ (and to) בִּקְעַ֥ת (the Valley) מִצְפֶּ֖ה (of Mizpah) מִזְרָ֑חָה (eastward). וַיַּכֻּ֕ם (And they struck them down) עַד־ (until) בִּלְתִּ֥י (not) הִשְׁאִֽיר־ (he did leave) לָהֶ֖ם (to them) שָׂרִֽיד׃ (a remnant). 9  וַיַּ֤עַשׂ (And did) לָהֶם֙ (to them) יְהוֹשֻׁ֔עַ (Joshua) כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר (as) אָֽמַר־ (had told) ל֖וֹ (him) יְהוָ֑ה (YHWH); אֶת־ (-) סוּסֵיהֶ֣ם (their horses) עִקֵּ֔ר (he hamstrung) וְאֶת־ (and) מַרְכְּבֹתֵיהֶ֖ם (their chariots) שָׂרַ֥ף (he burned) בָּאֵֽשׁ׃ס (with the fire).

10  וַיָּ֨שָׁב (And turned back) יְהוֹשֻׁ֜עַ (Joshua) בָּעֵ֤ת (at the time) הַהִיא֙ (that), וַיִּלְכֹּ֣ד (and he took) אֶת־ (-) חָצ֔וֹר (Hazor), וְאֶת־ (and) מַלְכָּ֖הּ (its king) הִכָּ֣ה (he struck) בֶחָ֑רֶב (with the sword), כִּֽי־ (for) חָצ֣וֹר (Hazor) לְפָנִ֔ים (formerly) הִ֕יא (was) רֹ֖אשׁ (the head) כָּל־ (of all) הַמַּמְלָכ֥וֹת (the kingdoms) הָאֵֽלֶּה׃ (these). 11  וַ֠יַּכּוּ (And they struck) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (every) הַנֶּ֨פֶשׁ (soul) אֲשֶׁר־ (that was) בָּ֤הּ (in it) לְפִי־ (with the mouth) חֶ֙רֶב֙ (of the sword), הַֽחֲרֵ֔ם (devoting them to destruction). לֹ֥א (Not) נוֹתַ֖ר (there was left) כָּל־ (anyone) נְשָׁמָ֑ה (breathing). וְאֶת־ (And) חָצ֖וֹר (Hazor) שָׂרַ֥ף (he burned) בָּאֵֽשׁ׃ (with the fire).

12  וְֽאֶת־ (And) כָּל־ (all) עָרֵ֣י (the cities) הַמְּלָכִֽים־ (of the kings) הָ֠אֵלֶּה (these) וְֽאֶת־ (and) כָּל־ (all) מַלְכֵיהֶ֞ם (their kings) לָכַ֧ד (took) יְהוֹשֻׁ֛עַ (Joshua), וַיַּכֵּ֥ם (and he struck them) לְפִי־ (with the mouth) חֶ֖רֶב (of the sword). הֶחֱרִ֣ים (He devoted to destruction) אוֹתָ֑ם (them), כַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר (as) צִוָּ֔ה (had commanded) מֹשֶׁ֖ה (Moses) עֶ֥בֶד (the servant) יְהוָֽה׃ (of YHWH). 13  רַ֣ק (Yet) כָּל־ (any) הֶעָרִ֗ים (the cities) הָעֹֽמְדוֹת֙ (that stood) עַל־ (on) תִּלָּ֔ם (their mounds), לֹ֥א (not) שְׂרָפָ֖ם (burned) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (Israel)— זוּלָתִ֛י (except) אֶת־ (-) חָצ֥וֹר (Hazor) לְבַדָּ֖הּ (only), שָׂרַ֥ף (which burned) יְהוֹשֻֽׁעַ׃ (Joshua).

14  וְ֠כֹל (And all) שְׁלַ֞ל (the spoil) הֶעָרִ֤ים (of the cities) הָאֵ֙לֶּה֙ (these) וְהַבְּהֵמָ֔ה (and the livestock) בָּזְז֥וּ (plundered for) לָהֶ֖ם (themselves) בְּנֵ֣י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (of Israel), רַ֣ק (but) אֶֽת־ (-) כָּל־ (every) הָאָדָ֞ם (man) הִכּ֣וּ (they struck) לְפִי־ (with the mouth) חֶ֗רֶב (of the sword), עַד־ (until) הִשְׁמִדָם֙ (they had completely destroyed) אוֹתָ֔ם (them); לֹ֥א (and not) הִשְׁאִ֖ירוּ (they left) כָּל־ (anyone) נְשָׁמָֽה׃ (breathing). 15  כַּאֲשֶׁ֨ר (As) צִוָּ֤ה (had commanded) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) אֶת־ (-) מֹשֶׁ֣ה (Moses) עַבְדּ֔וֹ (His servant), כֵּן־ (so) צִוָּ֥ה (had commanded) מֹשֶׁ֖ה (Moses) אֶת־ (-) יְהוֹשֻׁ֑עַ (Joshua). וְכֵן֙ (And so) עָשָׂ֣ה (did) יְהוֹשֻׁ֔עַ (Joshua); לֹֽא־ (not) הֵסִ֣יר (he left undone) דָּבָ֔ר (a thing) מִכֹּ֛ל (of all) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) צִוָּ֥ה (had commanded) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) אֶת־ (-) מֹשֶֽׁה׃ (Moses).

Joshua Takes the Whole Land

16  וַיִּקַּ֨ח (And took) יְהוֹשֻׁ֜עַ (Joshua) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) הָאָ֣רֶץ (the land) הַזֹּ֗את (this), הָהָ֤ר (the hill country), וְאֶת־ (and) כָּל־ (all) הַנֶּ֙גֶב֙ (the Negev), וְאֵת֙ (and) כָּל־ (all) אֶ֣רֶץ (the land) הַגֹּ֔שֶׁן (of Goshen), וְאֶת־ (and) הַשְּׁפֵלָ֖ה (the Shephelah), וְאֶת־ (and) הָעֲרָבָ֑ה (the plain), וְאֶת־ (and) הַ֥ר (the mountains) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (of Israel), וּשְׁפֵלָתֹֽה׃ (and its lowland). 17  מִן־ (From) הָהָ֤ר (the Mount) הֶֽחָלָק֙ (Halak) הָעוֹלֶ֣ה (and the ascent) שֵׂעִ֔יר (to Seir), וְעַד־ (and to) בַּ֤עַל (Baal-) גָּד֙ (gad) בְּבִקְעַ֣ת (in the Valley) הַלְּבָנ֔וֹן (of Lebanon) תַּ֖חַת (below) הַר־ (Mount) חֶרְמ֑וֹן (Hermon). וְאֵ֤ת (And) כָּל־ (all) מַלְכֵיהֶם֙ (their kings) לָכַ֔ד (He captured), וַיַּכֵּ֖ם (and struck them) וַיְמִיתֵֽם׃ (and killed them).

18  יָמִ֣ים (Days) רַבִּ֗ים (Many) עָשָׂ֧ה (made) יְהוֹשֻׁ֛עַ (Joshua) אֶת־ (with) כָּל־ (all) הַמְּלָכִ֥ים (kings) הָאֵ֖לֶּה (these) מִלְחָמָֽה׃ (war). 19  לֹֽא־ (Not) הָיְתָ֣ה (there was) עִ֗יר (a city) אֲשֶׁ֤ר (that) הִשְׁלִ֙ימָה֙ (made peace) אֶל־ (with) בְּנֵ֣י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel)— בִּלְתִּ֥י (except) הַחִוִּ֖י (the Hivite) יֹשְׁבֵ֣י (dwellers) גִבְע֑וֹן (of Gibeon)— אֶת־ (-) הַכֹּ֖ל (all) לָקְח֥וּ (they took) בַמִּלְחָמָֽה׃ (in battle). 20  כִּ֣י (For) מֵאֵ֣ת (of) יְהוָ֣ה׀ (YHWH) הָיְתָ֡ה (it was) לְחַזֵּ֣ק (to strengthen) אֶת־ (-) לִבָּם֩ (their hearts) לִקְרַ֨את (to engage) הַמִּלְחָמָ֤ה (in battle) אֶת־ (with) יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ (Israel) לְמַ֣עַן (in order that) הַֽחֲרִימָ֔ם (they would be set apart for destruction) לְבִלְתִּ֥י (and not) הֱיוֹת־ (would receive) לָהֶ֖ם (they) תְּחִנָּ֑ה (favor), כִּ֚י (but) לְמַ֣עַן (that) הַשְׁמִידָ֔ם (he might destroy them) כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר (as) צִוָּ֥ה (had commanded) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) אֶת־ (-) מֹשֶֽׁה׃ס (Moses).

21  וַיָּבֹ֨א (And came) יְהוֹשֻׁ֜עַ (Joshua) בָּעֵ֣ת (at the time) הַהִ֗יא (that) וַיַּכְרֵ֤ת (and cut off) אֶת־ (-) הָֽעֲנָקִים֙ (the Anakim) מִן־ (from) הָהָ֤ר (the mountains), מִן־ (from) חֶבְרוֹן֙ (Hebron), מִן־ (from) דְּבִ֣ר (Debir), מִן־ (from) עֲנָ֔ב (Anab), וּמִכֹּל֙ (and from all) הַ֣ר (the mountains) יְהוּדָ֔ה (of Judah), וּמִכֹּ֖ל (and from all) הַ֣ר (the mountains) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (of Israel) עִם־ (with) עָרֵיהֶ֖ם (their cities). הֶחֱרִימָ֥ם (Devoted them to destruction) יְהוֹשֻֽׁעַ׃ (Joshua). 22  לֹֽא־ (None) נוֹתַ֣ר (were left) עֲנָקִ֔ים (of the Anakim) בְּאֶ֖רֶץ (in the land) בְּנֵ֣י (of the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (of Israel); רַ֗ק (only) בְּעַזָּ֛ה (in Gaza), בְּגַ֥ת (in Gath), וּבְאַשְׁדּ֖וֹד (and in Ashdod) נִשְׁאָֽרוּ׃ (did they remain).

23  וַיִּקַּ֨ח (And took) יְהוֹשֻׁ֜עַ (Joshua) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) הָאָ֗רֶץ (the land), כְּ֠כֹל (according to all) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (that) דִּבֶּ֣ר (had said) יְהוָה֮ (YHWH) אֶל־ (to) מֹשֶׁה֒ (Moses); וַיִּתְּנָהּ֩ (and gave it) יְהוֹשֻׁ֨עַ (Joshua) לְנַחֲלָ֧ה (as an inheritance) לְיִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל (to Israel) כְּמַחְלְקֹתָ֖ם (according to their divisions) לְשִׁבְטֵיהֶ֑ם (by their tribes). וְהָאָ֥רֶץ (And the land) שָׁקְטָ֖ה (rested) מִמִּלְחָמָֽה׃פ (from war).
