Judgment against Idolatry
(Deuteronomy 4:15–31; Deuteronomy 12:29–32)

1  וַיְהִ֥י (And came) דְבַר־ (the word) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH) אֵלַ֥י (to me) לֵאמֹֽר׃ (saying), 2  בֶּן־ (Son) אָדָ֕ם (of man), שִׂ֥ים (set) פָּנֶ֖יךָ (your face) אֶל־ (toward) הָרֵ֣י (the mountains) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (of Israel), וְהִנָּבֵ֖א (and prophesy) אֲלֵיהֶֽם׃ (against them).

3  וְאָ֣מַרְתָּ֔ (And say), הָרֵי֙ (O mountains) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel), שִׁמְע֖וּ (hear) דְּבַר־ (the word) אֲדֹנָ֣י (of the Lord) יְהוִ֑ה (YHWH); כֹּה־ (thus) אָמַ֣ר (says) אֲדֹנָ֣י (the Lord) יְ֠הוִה (YHWH) לֶהָרִ֨ים (to the mountains), וְלַגְּבָע֜וֹת (and to the hills), לָאֲפִיקִ֣ים (to the ravines), וְלַגֵּאָיֹת (and to the valleys); הִנְנִ֨י (behold, I), אֲנִ֜י (I), מֵבִ֤יא (am bringing) עֲלֵיכֶם֙ (against you⁺) חֶ֔רֶב (a sword) וְאִבַּדְתִּ֖י (and I will destroy) בָּמֽוֹתֵיכֶֽם׃ (your⁺ high places). 4  וְנָשַׁ֙מּוּ֙ (And will be desolate), מִזְבְּח֣וֹתֵיכֶ֔ם (your⁺ altars) וְנִשְׁבְּר֖וּ (and will be broken); חַמָּֽנֵיכֶ֑ם (your⁺ incense altars) וְהִפַּלְתִּי֙ (and I will cast down) חַלְלֵיכֶ֔ם (your⁺ slain) לִפְנֵ֖י (before) גִּלּוּלֵיכֶֽם׃ (your⁺ idols). 5  וְנָתַתִּ֗י (And I will lay) אֶת־ (-) פִּגְרֵי֙ (the corpses) בְּנֵ֣י (of the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel) לִפְנֵ֖י (before) גִּלּֽוּלֵיהֶ֑ם (their idols); וְזֵרִיתִי֙ (and I will scatter) אֶת־ (-) עַצְמ֣וֹתֵיכֶ֔ם (your⁺ bones) סְבִיב֖וֹת (all around) מִזְבְּחוֹתֵיכֶֽם׃ (your⁺ altars).

6  בְּכֹל֙ (In all) מוֹשְׁב֣וֹתֵיכֶ֔ם (your⁺ dwelling places) הֶעָרִ֣ים (the cities) תֶּחֱרַ֔בְנָה (will be laid waste), וְהַבָּמ֖וֹת (and the high places) תִּישָׁ֑מְנָה (will be made desolate); לְמַעַן֩ (so that) יֶחֶרְב֨וּ (may be destroyed) וְיֶאְשְׁמ֜וּ (and made desolate), מִזְבְּחֽוֹתֵיכֶ֗ם (your⁺ altars) וְנִשְׁבְּר֤וּ (and may be broken) וְנִשְׁבְּתוּ֙ (and made to cease), גִּלּ֣וּלֵיכֶ֔ם (your⁺ idols) וְנִגְדְּעוּ֙ (and may be cut down), חַמָּ֣נֵיכֶ֔ם (your⁺ incense altars) וְנִמְח֖וּ (and may be blotted out) מַעֲשֵׂיכֶֽם׃ (your⁺ works). 7  וְנָפַ֥ל (And will fall) חָלָ֖ל (the slain) בְּתֽוֹכְכֶ֑ם (in your⁺ midst) וִֽידַעְתֶּ֖ם (and you⁺ will know) כִּֽי־ (that) אֲנִ֥י (I am) יְהוָֽה׃ (YHWH).

A Remnant to Be Blessed

8  וְהוֹתַרְתִּ֗י (And I will leave a remnant), בִּהְי֥וֹת (in their being) לָכֶ֛ם (unto you⁺) פְּלִ֥יטֵי (escapees) חֶ֖רֶב (of the sword) בַּגּוֹיִ֑ם (among the nations), בְּהִזָּרֽוֹתֵיכֶ֖ם (in your⁺ being scattered) בָּאֲרָצֽוֹת׃ (in the lands).

9  וְזָכְר֨וּ (And will remember) פְלִֽיטֵיכֶ֜ם (your⁺ escapees) אוֹתִ֗י (Me) בַּגּוֹיִם֮ (in the nations) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (to which) נִשְׁבּוּ־ (they are carried captive), שָׁם֒ (there) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (how) נִשְׁבַּ֜רְתִּי (I was broken) אֶת־ (by) לִבָּ֣ם (their heart), הַזּוֹנֶ֗ה (prostituting) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) סָר֙ (turned away) מֵֽעָלַ֔י (from Me) וְאֵת֙ (and by) עֵֽינֵיהֶ֔ם (their eyes), הַזֹּנ֕וֹת (seeking prostitution) אַחֲרֵ֖י (after) גִּלּֽוּלֵיהֶ֑ם (their idols); וְנָקֹ֙טּוּ֙ (and they will be loathsome) בִּפְנֵיהֶ֔ם (in their own sight) אֶל־ (for) הָֽרָעוֹת֙ (the evils) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) עָשׂ֔וּ (they did) לְכֹ֖ל (by all) תּוֹעֲבֹתֵיהֶֽם׃ (their abominations). 10  וְיָדְע֖וּ (And they will know) כִּֽי־ (that) אֲנִ֣י (I am) יְהוָ֑ה (YHWH), לֹ֤א (not) אֶל־ (in) חִנָּם֙ (vain) דִּבַּ֔רְתִּי (have I spoken) לַעֲשׂ֥וֹת (that I would bring) לָהֶ֖ם (upon them) הָרָעָ֥ה (the evil) הַזֹּֽאת׃פ (this).

11  כֹּֽה־ (Thus) אָמַ֞ר (says) אֲדֹנָ֣י (the Lord) יְהוִ֗ה (YHWH) הַכֵּ֨ה (Strike) בְכַפְּךָ֜ (with your hand), וּרְקַ֤ע (and stomp) בְּרַגְלְךָ֙ (with your foot), וֶֽאֱמָר־ (and say), אָ֔ח (Ah) אֶ֛ל (for) כָּל־ (all) תּוֹעֲב֥וֹת (the abominations) רָע֖וֹת (of evils) בֵּ֣ית (of the house) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (of Israel)! אֲשֶׁ֗ר (For) בַּחֶ֛רֶב (by the sword), בָּרָעָ֥ב (by the famine), וּבַדֶּ֖בֶר (and by the pestilence) יִפֹּֽלוּ׃ (they will fall). 12  הָרָח֞וֹק (The one far off) בַּדֶּ֣בֶר (by the pestilence); יָמ֗וּת (will die) וְהַקָּרוֹב֙ (and the one near) בַּחֶ֣רֶב (by the sword); יִפּ֔וֹל (will fall) וְהַנִּשְׁאָר֙ (and he who remains) וְהַנָּצ֔וּר (and is besieged) בָּרָעָ֖ב (by the famine). יָמ֑וּת (Will die) וְכִלֵּיתִ֥י (and I will complete) חֲמָתִ֖י (My fury) בָּֽם׃ (upon them).

13  וִֽידַעְתֶּם֙ (And you⁺ will know) כִּֽי־ (that) אֲנִ֣י (I am) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH), בִּֽהְי֣וֹת (in the coming of) חַלְלֵיהֶ֗ם (their slain to be) בְּתוֹךְ֙ (into the midst) גִּלּ֣וּלֵיהֶ֔ם (of their idols) סְבִיב֖וֹת (all around) מִזְבְּחֽוֹתֵיהֶ֑ם (their altars), אֶל֩ (at) כָּל־ (every) גִּבְעָ֨ה (hill), רָמָ֜ה (high) בְּכֹ֣ל׀ (on all) רָאשֵׁ֣י (the tops) הֶהָרִ֗ים (of the mountains), וְתַ֨חַת (and under) כָּל־ (every) עֵ֤ץ (tree), רַֽעֲנָן֙ (green) וְתַ֙חַת֙ (and under) כָּל־ (every) אֵלָ֣ה (oak), עֲבֻתָּ֔ה (thick) מְק֗וֹם (each place) אֲשֶׁ֤ר (which) נָֽתְנוּ־ (they gave) שָׁם֙ (there) רֵ֣יחַ (an aroma) נִיחֹ֔חַ (pleasing) לְכֹ֖ל (to all) גִּלּוּלֵיהֶֽם׃ (their idols). 14  וְנָטִ֤יתִי (And I will stretch out) אֶת־ (-) יָדִי֙ (My hand) עֲלֵיהֶ֔ם (against them) וְנָתַתִּ֨י (and I will make) אֶת־ (-) הָאָ֜רֶץ (the land) שְׁמָמָ֤ה (a desolation), וּמְשַׁמָּה֙ (and a wasteland) מִמִּדְבַּ֣ר (from the wilderness to) דִּבְלָ֔תָה (Diblah), בְּכֹ֖ל (in all) מוֹשְׁבֽוֹתֵיהֶ֑ם (their dwelling places); וְיָדְע֖וּ (and they will know) כִּֽי־ (that) אֲנִ֥י (I am) יְהוָֽה׃פ (YHWH).
