A Prophecy against Israel’s Shepherds

1 וַיְהִ֥י (And came) דְבַר־ (the word) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH) אֵלַ֥י (to me) לֵאמֹֽר׃ (saying),

2 בֶּן־ (Son) אָדָ֕ם (of man), הִנָּבֵ֖א (prophesy) עַל־ (against) רוֹעֵ֣י (the shepherds) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (of Israel), הִנָּבֵ֣א (prophesy), וְאָמַרְתָּ֩ (and say) אֲלֵיהֶ֨ם (to them) לָרֹעִ֜ים (to the shepherds); כֹּ֥ה (thus) אָמַ֣ר׀ (says) אֲדֹנָ֣י (the Lord) יְהוִ֗ה (YHWH) ה֤וֹי (Woe to) רֹעֵֽי־ (the shepherds) יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ (of Israel) אֲשֶׁ֤ר (who) הָיוּ֙ (have been) רֹעִ֣ים (feeding) אוֹתָ֔ם (themselves) הֲל֣וֹא (should it not be) הַצֹּ֔אן (the flock) יִרְע֖וּ (that shepherd) הָרֹעִֽים׃ (the shepherds)?

3 אֶת־ (-) הַחֵ֤לֶב (the fat), תֹּאכֵ֙לוּ֙ (you⁺ eat) וְאֶת־ (and) הַצֶּ֣מֶר (in wool), תִּלְבָּ֔שׁוּ (you⁺ clothe yourselves) הַבְּרִיאָ֖ה (the fatlings); תִּזְבָּ֑חוּ (you⁺ slaughter) הַצֹּ֖אן (the flock) לֹ֥א (not) תִרְעֽוּ׃ (do you⁺ feed).

4 אֶֽת־ (-) הַנַּחְלוֹת֩ (those being weak) לֹ֨א (not) חִזַּקְתֶּ֜ם (have you⁺ strengthened), וְאֶת־ (and) הַחוֹלָ֣ה (those being sick), לֹֽא־ (not) רִפֵּאתֶ֗ם (have you⁺ healed) וְלַנִּשְׁבֶּ֙רֶת֙ (and those being broken), לֹ֣א (not) חֲבַשְׁתֶּ֔ם (have you⁺ bandaged) וְאֶת־ (and) הַנִּדַּ֙חַת֙ (those driven off), לֹ֣א (not) הֲשֵׁבֹתֶ֔ם (have you⁺ returned) וְאֶת־ (and) הָאֹבֶ֖דֶת (those being lost); לֹ֣א (and not) בִקַּשְׁתֶּ֑ם (have you⁺ sought) וּבְחָזְקָ֛ה (and with force) רְדִיתֶ֥ם (you⁺ have ruled) אֹתָ֖ם (them) וּבְפָֽרֶךְ׃ (and with harshness).

5 וַתְּפוּצֶ֖ינָה (And they were scattered), מִבְּלִ֣י (for lack of) רֹעֶ֑ה (a shepherd), וַתִּהְיֶ֧ינָה (and they became) לְאָכְלָ֛ה (as food) לְכָל־ (for all) חַיַּ֥ת (the beasts) הַשָּׂדֶ֖ה (of the field), וַתְּפוּצֶֽינָה׃ (indeed, they were scattered).

6 יִשְׁגּ֤וּ (Went astray) צֹאנִי֙ (My flock) בְּכָל־ (through all) הֶ֣הָרִ֔ים (the mountains), וְעַ֖ל (and on) כָּל־ (every) גִּבְעָ֣ה (hill); רָמָ֑ה (high) וְעַ֨ל (and over) כָּל־ (all) פְּנֵ֤י (the face) הָאָ֙רֶץ֙ (of the earth), נָפֹ֣צוּ (was scattered) צֹאנִ֔י (My flock) וְאֵ֥ין (and there was not) דּוֹרֵ֖שׁ (one searching) וְאֵ֥ין (or) מְבַקֵּֽשׁ׃ (seeking them).

7 לָכֵ֣ן (Therefore), רֹעִ֔ים (shepherds), שִׁמְע֖וּ (hear) אֶת־ (-) דְּבַ֥ר (the word) יְהוָֽה׃ (of YHWH);

8 חַי־ (As live), אָ֜נִי (I) נְאֻ֣ם׀ (a declaration) אֲדֹנָ֣י (of the Lord) יְהוִ֗ה (YHWH), אִם־ (if) לֹ֣א (not) יַ֣עַן (because) הֱיֽוֹת־ (became) צֹאנִ֣י׀ (My flock) לָבַ֡ז (as prey), וַתִּֽהְיֶינָה֩ (and became) צֹאנִ֨י (My flock) לְאָכְלָ֜ה (as food) לְכָל־ (for every) חַיַּ֤ת (beast) הַשָּׂדֶה֙ (of the field), מֵאֵ֣ין (for lack) רֹעֶ֔ה (of a shepherd), וְלֹֽא־ (and not) דָרְשׁ֥וּ (did search) רֹעַ֖י (My shepherds) אֶת־ (-) צֹאנִ֑י (for My flock), וַיִּרְע֤וּ (and shepherded) הָֽרֹעִים֙ (the shepherds) אוֹתָ֔ם (themselves), וְאֶת־ (and) צֹאנִ֖י (My flock) לֹ֥א (not) רָעֽוּ׃ס (did they feed).

9 לָכֵן֙ (Therefore), הָֽרֹעִ֔ים (O shepherds), שִׁמְע֖וּ (hear) דְּבַר־ (the word) יְהוָֽה׃ (of YHWH):

10 כֹּה־ (Thus) אָמַ֞ר (says) אֲדֹנָ֣י (the Lord) יְהוִ֗ה (YHWH) הִנְנִ֨י (Behold, I am) אֶֽל־ (against) הָרֹעִ֜ים (the shepherds); וְֽדָרַשְׁתִּ֧י (and I will require) אֶת־ (-) צֹאנִ֣י (My flock) מִיָּדָ֗ם (from their hands), וְהִשְׁבַּתִּים֙ (and I will make them cease) מֵרְע֣וֹת (from shepherding) צֹ֔אן (the sheep); וְלֹא־ (and not) יִרְע֥וּ (will shepherd) ע֛וֹד (anymore); הָרֹעִ֖ים (the shepherds) אוֹתָ֑ם (themselves) וְהִצַּלְתִּ֤י (and for I will snatch) צֹאנִי֙ (My flock) מִפִּיהֶ֔ם (from their mouths), וְלֹֽא־ (so that not) תִהְיֶ֥יןָ (they may be) לָהֶ֖ם (for them) לְאָכְלָֽה׃ס (as food).

The Good Shepherd
(Psalm 23:1–6; John 10:1–21)

11 כִּ֛י (For) כֹּ֥ה (thus) אָמַ֖ר (says) אֲדֹנָ֣י (the Lord) יְהוִ֑ה (YHWH); הִנְנִי־ (Behold, I) אָ֕נִי (I Myself), וְדָרַשְׁתִּ֥י (will search for) אֶת־ (-) צֹאנִ֖י (My flock), וּבִקַּרְתִּֽים׃ (and I will seek them).

12 כְּבַקָּרַת֩ (As seeks out) רֹעֶ֨ה (a shepherd) עֶדְר֜וֹ (his flock) בְּיוֹם־ (on the day) הֱיוֹת֤וֹ (of his being) בְתוֹךְ־ (in the midst) צֹאנוֹ֙ (of his sheep) נִפְרָשׁ֔וֹת (that are scattered) כֵּ֖ן (so) אֲבַקֵּ֣ר (will I seek out) אֶת־ (-) צֹאנִ֑י (My flock), וְהִצַּלְתִּ֣י (and I will deliver) אֶתְהֶ֗ם (them) מִכָּל־ (from all) הַמְּקוֹמֹת֙ (the places) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (to which) נָפֹ֣צוּ (they were scattered) שָׁ֔ם (there) בְּי֥וֹם (on the day) עָנָ֖ן (of cloud) וַעֲרָפֶֽל׃ (and darkness).

13 וְהוֹצֵאתִ֣ים (And I will bring them out) מִן־ (from) הָעַמִּ֗ים (the peoples), וְקִבַּצְתִּים֙ (and I will gather them) מִן־ (from) הָ֣אֲרָצ֔וֹת (the lands), וַהֲבִיאֹתִ֖ים (and I will bring them) אֶל־ (to) אַדְמָתָ֑ם (their own land), וּרְעִיתִים֙ (and I will let them graze) אֶל־ (on) הָרֵ֣י (the mountains) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel) בָּאֲפִיקִ֕ים (in the valleys), וּבְכֹ֖ל (and in all) מוֹשְׁבֵ֥י (the inhabited places) הָאָֽרֶץ׃ (of the land).

14 בְּמִרְעֶה־ (In pasture), טּוֹב֙ (good) אֶרְעֶ֣ה (I will feed) אֹתָ֔ם (them) וּבְהָרֵ֥י (and on the mountains) מְרֽוֹם־ (of the height) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (of Israel) יִהְיֶ֣ה (will be); נְוֵהֶ֑ם (their grazing land) שָׁ֤ם (there) תִּרְבַּ֙צְנָה֙ (they will lie down) בְּנָ֣וֶה (in grazing land), טּ֔וֹב (good) וּמִרְעֶ֥ה (and in pasture) שָׁמֵ֛ן (rich) תִּרְעֶ֖ינָה (they will feed) אֶל־ (on) הָרֵ֥י (the mountains) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (of Israel).

15 אֲנִ֨י (I) אֶרְעֶ֤ה (will feed) צֹאנִי֙ (My flock), וַאֲנִ֣י (and I) אַרְבִּיצֵ֔ם (will make them lie down), נְאֻ֖ם (a declaration) אֲדֹנָ֥י (of the Lord) יְהוִֽה׃ (YHWH).

16 אֶת־ (-) הָאֹבֶ֤דֶת (the one being lost), אֲבַקֵּשׁ֙ (I will seek) וְאֶת־ (and) הַנִּדַּ֣חַת (the one driven away), אָשִׁ֔יב (I will return) וְלַנִּשְׁבֶּ֣רֶת (and the broken), אֶחֱבֹ֔שׁ (I will bind up) וְאֶת־ (and) הַחוֹלָ֖ה (the one being sick); אֲחַזֵּ֑ק (I will strengthen) וְאֶת־ (and) הַשְּׁמֵנָ֧ה (the fat one) וְאֶת־ (and) הַחֲזָקָ֛ה (the strong one); אַשְׁמִ֖יד (I will destroy) אֶרְעֶ֥נָּה (I will shepherd her) בְמִשְׁפָּֽט׃ (with justice).

17 וְאַתֵּ֣נָה (And you⁺), צֹאנִ֔י (My flock), כֹּ֥ה (thus) אָמַ֖ר (says) אֲדֹנָ֣י (the Lord) יְהוִ֑ה (YHWH); הִנְנִ֤י (Behold, I) שֹׁפֵט֙ (am going to judge) בֵּֽין־ (between) שֶׂ֣ה (sheep) לָשֶׂ֔ה (and sheep), לָאֵילִ֖ים (the rams) וְלָעַתּוּדִֽים׃ (and the goats).

18 הַמְעַ֣ט (Is it a little thing) מִכֶּ֗ם (for you⁺) הַמִּרְעֶ֤ה (pasture), הַטּוֹב֙ (on the good) תִּרְע֔וּ (to feed) וְיֶ֙תֶר֙ (that the remainder) מִרְעֵיכֶ֔ם (of your⁺ pasture-land)? תִּרְמְס֖וּ (You⁺ would trample) בְּרַגְלֵיכֶ֑ם (with your⁺ feet) וּמִשְׁקַע־ (and the clear) מַ֣יִם (waters), תִּשְׁתּ֔וּ (you⁺ drink) וְאֵת֙ (that) הַנּ֣וֹתָרִ֔ים (that the remainder) בְּרַגְלֵיכֶ֖ם (with your⁺ feet) תִּרְפֹּשֽׂוּן׃ (you⁺ would muddy)?

19 וְצֹאנִ֑י (And My flock), מִרְמַ֤ס (what you have trampled) רַגְלֵיכֶם֙ (with your⁺ feet); תִּרְעֶ֔ינָה (they feed on) וּמִרְפַּ֥שׂ (and what you have muddied) רַגְלֵיכֶ֖ם (with your⁺ feet) תִּשְׁתֶּֽינָה׃ס (must they drink).

20 לָכֵ֗ן (Therefore) כֹּ֥ה (thus) אָמַ֛ר (says) אֲדֹנָ֥י (the Lord) יְהוִ֖ה (YHWH) אֲלֵיהֶ֑ם (to them) הִנְנִי־ (Behold, I) אָ֕נִי (I Myself), וְשָֽׁפַטְתִּי֙ (will judge) בֵּֽין־ (between) שֶׂ֣ה (of the flock) בִרְיָ֔ה (the fat) וּבֵ֥ין (and between) שֶׂ֖ה (of the flock) רָזָֽה׃ (the lean).

21 יַ֗עַן (Because) בְּצַ֤ד (with flank) וּבְכָתֵף֙ (and shoulder), תֶּהְדֹּ֔פוּ (you⁺ have pushed) וּבְקַרְנֵיכֶ֥ם (and with your⁺ horns), תְּנַגְּח֖וּ (you⁺ have thrust) כָּל־ (all) הַנַּחְל֑וֹת (the weak ones) עַ֣ד (until) אֲשֶׁ֧ר (that) הֲפִיצוֹתֶ֛ם (you⁺ have scattered) אוֹתָ֖נָה (them) אֶל־ (to) הַחֽוּצָה׃ (the outside);

22 וְהוֹשַׁעְתִּ֣י (so I will bring salvation) לְצֹאנִ֔י (to My flock), וְלֹֽא־ (and not) תִהְיֶ֥ינָה (will they be) ע֖וֹד (any longer) לָבַ֑ז (for prey); וְשָׁ֣פַטְתִּ֔י (and I will judge) בֵּ֥ין (between) שֶׂ֖ה (a sheep) לָשֶֽׂה׃ (and a sheep).

23 וַהֲקִמֹתִ֨י (And I will raise up) עֲלֵיהֶ֜ם (over them) רֹעֶ֤ה (shepherd) אֶחָד֙ (one) וְרָעָ֣ה (and he will feed) אֶתְהֶ֔ן (them) אֵ֖ת (-) עַבְדִּ֣י (My servant) דָוִ֑יד (David); ה֚וּא (He) יִרְעֶ֣ה (will feed) אֹתָ֔ם (them) וְהֽוּא־ (and he) יִהְיֶ֥ה (will be) לָהֶ֖ן (unto them) לְרֹעֶֽה׃ (as shepherd).

24 וַאֲנִ֣י (And I) יְהוָ֗ה (YHWH) אֶהְיֶ֤ה (will be) לָהֶם֙ (their) לֵֽאלֹהִ֔ים (God), וְעַבְדִּ֥י (and My servant) דָוִ֖ד (David) נָשִׂ֣יא (a prince) בְתוֹכָ֑ם (in their midst) אֲנִ֥י (I) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) דִּבַּֽרְתִּי׃ (have spoken).

The Covenant of Peace

25 וְכָרַתִּ֤י (And I will cut) לָהֶם֙ (with them) בְּרִ֣ית (a covenant) שָׁל֔וֹם (of peace), וְהִשְׁבַּתִּ֥י (and I will make cease) חַיָּֽה־ (beast) רָעָ֖ה (the evil) מִן־ (from) הָאָ֑רֶץ (the land); וְיָשְׁב֤וּ (and they will dwell) בַמִּדְבָּר֙ (in the wilderness), לָבֶ֔טַח (in safety) וְיָשְׁנ֖וּ (and they will sleep) בַּיְּעָרִֽים׃ (in the forests).

26 וְנָתַתִּ֥י (And I will make) אוֹתָ֛ם (them) וּסְבִיב֥וֹת (and the places around) גִּבְעָתִ֖י (My hill) בְּרָכָ֑ה (to be a blessing); וְהוֹרַדְתִּ֤י (and I will send down) הַגֶּ֙שֶׁם֙ (showers) בְּעִתּ֔וֹ (in their season); גִּשְׁמֵ֥י (showers) בְרָכָ֖ה (of blessing) יִֽהְיֽוּ׃ (there will be).

27 וְנָתַן֩ (And will give forth) עֵ֨ץ (the trees) הַשָּׂדֶ֜ה (of the field) אֶת־ (-) פִּרְי֗וֹ (their fruit), וְהָאָ֙רֶץ֙ (and the earth) תִּתֵּ֣ן (will give forth) יְבוּלָ֔הּ (her produce), וְהָי֥וּ (and they will be) עַל־ (upon) אַדְמָתָ֖ם (their land), לָבֶ֑טַח (in safety) וְֽיָדְע֞וּ (and they will know) כִּי־ (that) אֲנִ֣י (I am) יְהוָ֗ה (YHWH), בְּשִׁבְרִי֙ (when I have broken) אֶת־ (-) מֹט֣וֹת (the bands) עֻלָּ֔ם (of their yoke), וְהִ֨צַּלְתִּ֔ים (and delivered them) מִיַּ֖ד (from the hand) הָעֹבְדִ֥ים (of those enslaving) בָּהֶֽם׃ (them).

28 וְלֹא־ (And not) יִהְי֨וּ (they will be) ע֥וֹד (any longer) בַּז֙ (as prey) לַגּוֹיִ֔ם (for the nations), וְחַיַּ֥ת (and the beasts) הָאָ֖רֶץ (of the land) לֹ֣א (not) תֹאכְלֵ֑ם (will devour them) וְיָשְׁב֥וּ (and they will dwell) לָבֶ֖טַח (in safety), וְאֵ֥ין (and no one) מַחֲרִֽיד׃ (will frighten them).

29 וַהֲקִמֹתִ֥י (And I will raise up) לָהֶ֛ם (for them) מַטָּ֖ע (a planting) לְשֵׁ֑ם (of renown), וְלֹֽא־ (and not) יִהְי֨וּ (will they be) ע֜וֹד (any longer) אֲסֻפֵ֤י (consumed) רָעָב֙ (by hunger) בָּאָ֔רֶץ (in the land), וְלֹֽא־ (and not) יִשְׂא֥וּ (will they bear) ע֖וֹד (anymore) כְּלִמַּ֥ת (the shame) הַגּוֹיִֽם׃ (of the nations).

30 וְיָדְע֗וּ (And they will know) כִּ֣י (that) אֲנִ֧י (I am) יְהוָ֛ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵיהֶ֖ם (their God) אִתָּ֑ם (with them) וְהֵ֗מָּה (and they are), עַמִּי֙ (My people), בֵּ֣ית (the house) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel), נְאֻ֖ם (a declaration) אֲדֹנָ֥י (of the Lord) יְהוִֽה׃ (YHWH).

31 וְאַתֵּ֥ן (And you⁺ are) צֹאנִ֛י (My flock), צֹ֥אן (the flock) מַרְעִיתִ֖י (of My pasture), אָדָ֣ם (men), אַתֶּ֑ם (you⁺ are) אֲנִי֙ (I am) אֱלֹ֣הֵיכֶ֔ם (your⁺ God), נְאֻ֖ם (a declaration) אֲדֹנָ֥י (of the Lord) יְהוִֽה׃פ (YHWH).
