The Ten Commandments
(Deuteronomy 5:6–21)

1  וַיְדַבֵּ֣ר (And spoke) אֱלֹהִ֔ים (God) אֵ֛ת (-) כָּל־ (all) הַדְּבָרִ֥ים (words) הָאֵ֖לֶּה (these), לֵאמֹֽר׃ס (saying), 2  אָֽנֹכִ֖י֙ (I) יְהוָ֣ה (am YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֑֔יךָ (your God), אֲשֶׁ֧ר (who) הוֹצֵאתִ֛יךָ (brought you out) מֵאֶ֥רֶץ (from the land) מִצְרַ֖יִם (of Egypt), מִבֵּ֣֥ית (out of the house) עֲבָדִיֽ֑ם׃ (of slavery).

3  לֹֽ֣א (Not) יִהְיֶֽה־ (shall have) לְךָ֛֩ (you) אֱלֹהִ֥֨ים (gods) אֲחֵרִ֖֜ים (other) עַל־ (before) פָּנָֽ֗יַ׃ (My face).

4  לֹֽ֣א (Not) תַֽעֲשֶׂ֨ה־ (you shall make) לְךָ֥֣ (for yourself) פֶ֣֙סֶל֙׀ (a carved image), וְכָל־ (or any) תְּמוּנָ֡֔ה (likeness) אֲשֶׁ֤ר֣ (that is) בַּשָּׁמַ֙יִם֙׀ (in the heavens) מִמַּ֡֔עַל (above), וַֽאֲשֶׁ֥ר֩ (or that is) בָּאָ֖֨רֶץ (in the earth) מִתַָּ֑֜חַת (beneath), וַאֲשֶׁ֥֣ר (or that is) בַּמַּ֖֣יִם׀ (in the waters) מִתַּ֥֣חַת (under) לָאָֽ֗רֶץ׃ (the earth). 5  לֹֽא־ (Not) תִשְׁתַּחְוֶ֥֣ה (you shall bow down) לָהֶ֖ם֮ (to them) וְלֹ֣א (and not) תָעָבְדֵ֑ם֒ (serve them); כִּ֣י (for) אָֽנֹכִ֞י (I), יְהוָ֤ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֙יךָ֙ (your God), אֵ֣ל (am a God) קַנָּ֔א (jealous), פֹּ֠קֵד (visiting) עֲוֺ֨ן (the iniquity) אָבֹ֧ת (of fathers) עַל־ (on) בָּנִ֛ים (sons) עַל־ (on) שִׁלֵּשִׁ֥ים (the third) וְעַל־ (and on) רִבֵּעִ֖ים (the fourth) לְשֹׂנְאָֽ֑י׃ (for those who hate Me), 6  וְעֹ֥֤שֶׂה (and showing) חֶ֖֙סֶד֙ (loving devotion) לַאֲלָפִ֑֔ים (to thousands), לְאֹהֲבַ֖י (for those who love Me) וּלְשֹׁמְרֵ֥י (and for those who keep) מִצְוֺתָֽי׃ס (My commandments).

7  לֹ֥א (Not) תִשָּׂ֛א (you shall take) אֶת־ (-) שֵֽׁם־ (the name) יְהוָ֥ה (of YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ (your God) לַשָּׁ֑וְא (in vain), כִּ֣י (for) לֹ֤א (not) יְנַקֶּה֙ (will hold guiltless) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH) אֵ֛ת (-) אֲשֶׁר־ (him who) יִשָּׂ֥א (takes) אֶת־ (-) שְׁמ֖וֹ (His name) לַשָּֽׁוְא׃פ (in vain).

8  זָכ֛וֹר֩ (Remember) אֶת־ (-) י֥֨וֹם (day) הַשַּׁבָּ֖֜ת (the Sabbath), לְקַדְּשֽׁ֗וֹ׃ (to sanctify it). 9  שֵׁ֤֣שֶׁת (Six) יָמִ֣ים֙ (days) תַּֽעֲבֹ֔ד֮ (you shall labor) וְעָשִׂ֖֣יתָ (and you shall do) כָּל־ (all) מְלַאכְתֶּֽךָ֒׃ (your work), 10  וְי֙וֹם֙ (and day) הַשְּׁבִיעִ֔֜י (the seventh) שַׁבָּ֖֣ת׀ (is a Sabbath) לַיהוָ֣ה (to YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֑֗יךָ (your God); לֹֽ֣א־ (not) תַעֲשֶׂ֣֨ה (you shall do) כָל־ (any) מְלָאכָ֡֜ה (work)— אַתָּ֣ה׀ (you), וּבִנְךָֽ֣־ (and your son), וּ֠בִתֶּ֗ךָ (and your daughter), עַבְדְּךָ֤֨ (your manservant), וַאֲמָֽתְךָ֜֙ (and your maidservant), וּבְהֶמְתֶּ֔֗ךָ (and your livestock), וְגֵרְךָ֖֙ (and your sojourner) אֲשֶׁ֥֣ר (who is) בִּשְׁעָרֶֽ֔יךָ׃ (within your gates). 11  כִּ֣י (For) שֵֽׁשֶׁת־ (in six) יָמִים֩ (days) עָשָׂ֨ה (made) יְהוָ֜ה (YHWH) אֶת־ (-) הַשָּׁמַ֣יִם (the heavens) וְאֶת־ (and) הָאָ֗רֶץ (the earth), אֶת־ (-) הַיָּם֙ (the sea), וְאֶת־ (and) כָּל־ (all) אֲשֶׁר־ (that is) בָּ֔ם (in them); וַיָּ֖נַח (and He rested) בַּיּ֣וֹם (in the day) הַשְּׁבִיעִ֑י (the seventh). עַל־ (On) כֵּ֗ן (therefore) בֵּרַ֧ךְ (blessed) יְהוָ֛ה (YHWH) אֶת־ (-) י֥וֹם (day) הַשַּׁבָּ֖ת (the Sabbath) וַֽיְקַדְּשֵֽׁהוּ׃ס (and sanctified it).

12  כַּבֵּ֥ד (Honor) אֶת־ (-) אָבִ֖יךָ (your father) וְאֶת־ (and) אִמֶּ֑ךָ (your mother), לְמַ֙עַן֙ (so that) יַאֲרִכ֣וּן (may be long) יָמֶ֔יךָ (your days) עַ֚ל (upon) הָאֲדָמָ֔ה (the land) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) יְהוָ֥ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ (your God) נֹתֵ֥ן (is giving) לָֽךְ׃ס (to you).

13  לֹ֥֖א (Not) תִּֿרְצָֽ֖ח׃ס (you shall murder).

14  לֹ֣֖א (Not) תִּֿנְאָֽ֑ף׃ס (you shall commit adultery).

15  לֹ֣֖א (Not) תִּֿגְנֹֽ֔ב׃ס (you shall steal).

16  לֹֽא־ (Not) תַעֲנֶ֥ה (you shall answer) בְרֵעֲךָ֖ (against your neighbor) עֵ֥ד (as a witness) שָֽׁקֶר׃ס (false).

17  לֹ֥א (Not) תַחְמֹ֖ד (you shall covet) בֵּ֣ית (the house) רֵעֶ֑ךָ (of your neighbor); לֹֽא־ (not) תַחְמֹ֞ד (you shall covet) אֵ֣שֶׁת (the wife) רֵעֶ֗ךָ (of your neighbor), וְעַבְדּ֤וֹ (or his manservant), וַאֲמָתוֹ֙ (or his maidservant), וְשׁוֹר֣וֹ (or his ox), וַחֲמֹר֔וֹ (or his donkey), וְכֹ֖ל (or anything) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) לְרֵעֶֽךָ׃פ (belongs to your neighbor).

Moses Comforts the People
(Deuteronomy 5:22–33; Hebrews 12:18–29)

18  וְכָל־ (And all) הָעָם֩ (the people) רֹאִ֨ים (were seeing) אֶת־ (-) הַקּוֹלֹ֜ת (the voices), וְאֶת־ (and) הַלַּפִּידִ֗ם (the flames), וְאֵת֙ (and) ק֣וֹל (the voice) הַשֹּׁפָ֔ר (of the shofar), וְאֶת־ (and) הָהָ֖ר (the mountain) עָשֵׁ֑ן (smoking); וַיַּ֤רְא (and saw) הָעָם֙ (the people), וַיָּנֻ֔עוּ (and they trembled) וַיַּֽעַמְד֖וּ (and they stood) מֵֽרָחֹֽק׃ (from afar). 19  וַיֹּֽאמְרוּ֙ (And they said) אֶל־ (to) מֹשֶׁ֔ה (Moses), דַּבֵּר־ (Speak) אַתָּ֥ה (you) עִמָּ֖נוּ (with us), וְנִשְׁמָ֑עָה (and we will listen). וְאַל־ (And not) יְדַבֵּ֥ר (let speak) עִמָּ֛נוּ (with us) אֱלֹהִ֖ים (God), פֶּן־ (lest) נָמֽוּת׃ (we die).

20  וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (And said) מֹשֶׁ֣ה (Moses) אֶל־ (to) הָעָם֮ (the people), אַל־ (Not) תִּירָאוּ֒ (do fear), כִּ֗י (for) לְבַֽעֲבוּר֙ (in order to) נַסּ֣וֹת (test) אֶתְכֶ֔ם (you⁺) בָּ֖א (has come) הָאֱלֹהִ֑ים (God), וּבַעֲב֗וּר (and in order that) תִּהְיֶ֧ה (may be) יִרְאָת֛וֹ (His fear) עַל־ (before) פְּנֵיכֶ֖ם (your⁺ faces), לְבִלְתִּ֥י (so that not) תֶחֱטָֽאוּ׃ (you⁺ may sin). 21  וַיַּעֲמֹ֥ד (And stood) הָעָ֖ם (the people) מֵרָחֹ֑ק (from afar), וּמֹשֶׁה֙ (and Moses) נִגַּ֣שׁ (drew near) אֶל־ (to) הָֽעֲרָפֶ֔ל (the thick darkness) אֲשֶׁר־ (where) שָׁ֖ם (was) הָאֱלֹהִֽים׃פ (God).

Idolatry Forbidden
(1 Corinthians 10:14–22)

22  וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And said) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) אֶל־ (to) מֹשֶׁ֔ה (Moses), כֹּ֥ה (Thus) תֹאמַ֖ר (you shall say) אֶל־ (to) בְּנֵ֣י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (of Israel), אַתֶּ֣ם (Yourselves) רְאִיתֶ֔ם (you⁺ have seen) כִּ֚י (that) מִן־ (from) הַשָּׁמַ֔יִם (the heavens) דִּבַּ֖רְתִּי (I have talked) עִמָּכֶֽם׃ (with you⁺). 23  לֹ֥א (Not) תַעֲשׂ֖וּן (you⁺ shall make) אִתִּ֑י (alongside Me) אֱלֹ֤הֵי (gods); כֶ֙סֶף֙ (of silver) וֵאלֹהֵ֣י (and gods) זָהָ֔ב (of gold) לֹ֥א (not) תַעֲשׂ֖וּ (shall you⁺ make) לָכֶֽם׃ (for yourselves).

24  מִזְבַּ֣ח (An altar) אֲדָמָה֮ (of earth) תַּעֲשֶׂה־ (you shall make) לִּי֒ (for Me), וְזָבַחְתָּ֣ (and you shall sacrifice) עָלָ֗יו (on it) אֶת־ (-) עֹלֹתֶ֙יךָ֙ (your burnt offerings), וְאֶת־ (and) שְׁלָמֶ֔יךָ (your peace offerings), אֶת־ (-) צֹֽאנְךָ֖ (your flock), וְאֶת־ (and) בְּקָרֶ֑ךָ (your herd). בְּכָל־ (In every) הַמָּקוֹם֙ (place) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (where) אַזְכִּ֣יר (I cause to be remembered) אֶת־ (-) שְׁמִ֔י (My name), אָב֥וֹא (I will come) אֵלֶ֖יךָ (to you) וּבֵרַכְתִּֽיךָ׃ (and I will bless you).

25  וְאִם־ (And if) מִזְבַּ֤ח (an altar) אֲבָנִים֙ (of stone) תַּֽעֲשֶׂה־ (you make) לִּ֔י (for Me), לֹֽא־ (not) תִבְנֶ֥ה (you shall build) אֶתְהֶ֖ן (them) גָּזִ֑ית (of cut stone); כִּ֧י (for) חַרְבְּךָ֛ (your tool) הֵנַ֥פְתָּ (if you wave) עָלֶ֖יהָ (on it), וַתְּחַֽלְלֶֽהָ׃ (then you have profaned it). 26  וְלֹֽא־ (And not) תַעֲלֶ֥ה (shall you go up) בְמַעֲלֹ֖ת (by steps) עַֽל־ (to) מִזְבְּחִ֑י (My altar), אֲשֶׁ֛ר (that) לֹֽא־ (not) תִגָּלֶ֥ה (may be exposed) עֶרְוָתְךָ֖ (your nakedness) עָלָֽיו׃פ (on it).
