Berean Study Bible Hosea Redeems His WifeGod again directs Hosea’s life and ministry, making his domestic circumstances a living portrayal of the Lord’s dealings with Israel. Hos 1:2 When the LORD first spoke through Hosea, … “Go show love to your wife again, Hosea is commanded to restore his unfaithful wife rather than abandon her. His deliberate, costly love reflects God’s continued commitment to His covenant people. Hos 2:19-20 So I will betroth you to Me forever;… though she is loved by another and is an adulteress. Her adultery portrays Israel’s betrayal of the Lord through idolatry and dependence on foreign nations. Though Israel had pursued other gods, the Lord had not ceased to claim her as His own. Jer 3:1 If a man divorces his wife and she leaves him… Love her as the LORD loves the Israelites, Hosea’s treatment of his wife was to correspond to God’s faithful love for Israel—a love that disciplines sin but does not surrender His covenant purpose. Hos 11:1-4 When Israel was a child, I loved him… though they turn to other gods Israel repeatedly forsook the Lord for Baal and other Canaanite deities, adopting the worship practices of the surrounding nations. Deu 31:18 And on that day I will surely hide My face… and love to offer raisin cakes to idols.” Raisin cakes were associated with pagan feasts and offerings. Israel’s enjoyment of such rituals revealed that idolatry had become part of its ordinary religious and social life. Jer 44:19 “Moreover,” said the women, “when we burned incense… So I bought her Hosea reclaimed Gomer from a condition of bondage or degradation, acting at God’s command. His costly action portrays the Lord’s determination to restore Israel after her unfaithfulness. 1Co 7:23 You were bought at a price; do not become slaves of men. for fifteen shekels of silver The silver formed part of the purchase price, showing that redemption involved a real cost. Lev 27:7 And if the person is sixty years of age or older,… and a homer and a lethech of barley. The barley completed the payment, likely bringing its value near the customary price of a slave. Hosea’s purchase of Gomer foreshadows God’s redemption of His people, fulfilled ultimately in Christ’s sacrifice. Lev 27:16 If a man consecrates to the LORD a parcel of his land… Then I said to her, Hosea spoke directly to Gomer after redeeming her, directing the terms of her return to his household. His actions portray the Lord’s dealings with Israel, whom He would discipline yet not abandon. Gen 24:58 They called Rebekah and asked her, “Will you go with this man?”… “You must live with me for many days; Gomer was to remain under Hosea’s care through an extended period of separation and restoration. Likewise, Israel would endure a long season without its former national and religious privileges. Gen 24:55 But her brother and mother said, “Let the girl remain… you must not be promiscuous Her unfaithfulness was to end. Israel’s idolatry had been spiritual adultery against the Lord and required repentance. 1Co 6:18 Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin… or belong to another, Gomer was to live exclusively for Hosea. Israel also belonged to the Lord by covenant and could not serve other gods. Deu 22:22 If a man is found lying with another man’s wife,… and I will do the same for you.” Hosea pledged faithfulness to Gomer during this period. The Lord would remain faithful to Israel, preserving the promise of eventual restoration despite her past rebellion. 1Co 7:3-4 The husband should fulfill his marital duty to his wife,… For the Israelites must live many days Israel would endure a long period of national discipline after the collapse of both kingdoms and the exile. Scattered from the land and deprived of former institutions, the people would remain distinct while awaiting restoration. Jer 29:10 For this is what the LORD says: When Babylon’s seventy years… without king or prince, The Davidic throne would cease to rule in Jerusalem, and Israel would have no independent national ruler. This condition continued through successive foreign powers and prepared the way for the coming of the promised Son of David. Hos 10:3 Surely now they will say, “We have no king,… without sacrifice or sacred pillar, With the temple destroyed, the sacrificial system could not continue as it had under the Law. At the same time, the removal of sacred pillars ended practices often connected with idolatrous worship, leaving Israel without both corrupt worship and the temple rites they had neglected. Hos 9:4 They will not pour out wine offerings to the LORD… and without ephod or idol. The loss of the ephod meant the absence of the regular priestly means of seeking God’s direction, while the removal of idols marked God’s judgment on Israel’s persistent unfaithfulness. The nation’s spiritual emptiness would ultimately point to the need for the true King, sacrifice, and High Priest fulfilled in Jesus Christ. Jdg 17:5 Now this man Micah had a shrine, and he made an ephod… Afterward, “Afterward” indicates that judgment will not be Israel’s final condition. Following the nation’s discipline and exile, God will bring restoration. Ezk 38:8 After a long time you will be summoned. In the latter years… the people of Israel will return They will turn from rebellion and idolatry and be restored to their God and covenant calling. Deu 30:2-3 and when you and your children return to the LORD… and seek the LORD their God Their return will involve genuine repentance and renewed devotion to the LORD. Deu 4:29 But if from there you will seek the LORD your God,… and David their king. Israel will recognize the promised Davidic ruler, fulfilled in Jesus Christ, the Messiah and rightful King. Jer 30:9 Instead, they will serve the LORD their God…… They will come trembling to the LORD Reverent fear will replace their former disregard for God’s holiness and authority. Psa 2:11 Serve the LORD with fear, and rejoice with trembling. and to His goodness They will receive His mercy, faithfulness, and restoring blessing. Jer 31:12-14 They will come and shout for joy on the heights of Zion… in the last days. The restoration reaches beyond Israel’s return from exile to the future fulfillment of God’s purposes under the Messiah. Dan 2:28 But there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries,… This is a draft of the Berean Study Bible. Please send all comments and recommendations to bereanstudybible@aol.com. Bible Hub |
