Therefore thou art inexcusable, O man, whosoever thou art, that condemnest another, for by condemning them, you condemn yourself; since you that condemn them, do the same things. Therefore you have no excuse, O man, every one of you who judges. For in passing judgment on another you condemn yourself, because you, the judge, practice the very same things. You, therefore, have no excuse, you who pass judgment on someone else, for at whatever point you judge another, you are condemning yourself, because you who pass judgment do the same things.
but we know that the judgment of God against those who commit such crimes, is just. We know that the judgment of God rightly falls on those who practice such things. Now we know that God’s judgment against those who do such things is based on truth.
do you think then, O man, who do what you condemn in others, that you shall escape the judgment of God? Do you suppose, O man—you who judge those who practice such things and yet do them yourself—that you will escape the judgment of God? So when you, a mere human being, pass judgment on them and yet do the same things, do you think you will escape God’s judgment?
or do you despise the riches of his kindness, and forbearance, and long-suffering; not considering that the kindness of God invites you to repentance? Or do you presume on the riches of his kindness and forbearance and patience, not knowing that God’s kindness is meant to lead you to repentance? Or do you show contempt for the riches of his kindness, forbearance and patience, not realizing that God’s kindness is intended to lead you to repentance?
however by your impenitence, and the insensibility of your heart, you treasure up for yourself wrath against the day of wrath, and of the revelation of the righteous judgment of God, But because of your hard and impenitent heart you are storing up wrath for yourself on the day of wrath when God’s righteous judgment will be revealed. But because of your stubbornness and your unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath against yourself for the day of God’s wrath, when his righteous judgment will be revealed.
who will render to every man according to his actions: eternal life to those, He will render to each one according to his works: God “will repay each person according to what they have done.”
who by patient continuance in well doing, seek for glory, honour, and immortality; to those who by patience in well-doing seek for glory and honor and immortality, he will give eternal life; To those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor and immortality, he will give eternal life.
but unto those who are contentious, and do not yield to the truth, but give way to injustice, indignation and wrath, but for those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, there will be wrath and fury. But for those who are self-seeking and who reject the truth and follow evil, there will be wrath and anger.
tribulation and anguish to every one that doth evil, to the Jew first, and also to the Gentile. There will be tribulation and distress for every human being who does evil, the Jew first and also the Greek, There will be trouble and distress for every human being who does evil: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile;
but glory, honour, and peace, to every man that acts right, to the Jew first, and also to the Gentile: but glory and honor and peace for everyone who does good, the Jew first and also the Greek. but glory, honor and peace for everyone who does good: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile.
since with God there is no respect of persons. For God shows no partiality. For God does not show favoritism.
For as many as have sinned without the law, shall also perish without the law: and as many as have sinned under the law, shall be condemned by the law, For all who have sinned without the law will also perish without the law, and all who have sinned under the law will be judged by the law. All who sin apart from the law will also perish apart from the law, and all who sin under the law will be judged by the law.
for not the bare hearers of the law, but they who observe the law, are such as shall be justified, before God. For it is not the hearers of the law who are righteous before God, but the doers of the law who will be justified. For it is not those who hear the law who are righteous in God’s sight, but it is those who obey the law who will be declared righteous.
when the Gentiles who have not the law, do by nature what the law prescribes, tho' these have not the law, they are a law to themselves: For when Gentiles, who do not have the law, by nature do what the law requires, they are a law to themselves, even though they do not have the law. (Indeed, when Gentiles, who do not have the law, do by nature things required by the law, they are a law for themselves, even though they do not have the law.
for they shew that the duties prescrib'd by the law, are written in their hearts, their consciences bearing witness to it, by their own reasonings alternately accusing and excusing them. They show that the work of the law is written on their hearts, while their conscience also bears witness, and their conflicting thoughts accuse or even excuse them They show that the requirements of the law are written on their hearts, their consciences also bearing witness, and their thoughts sometimes accusing them and at other times even defending them.)
in the day, when according to my gospel, God shall judge the secret actions of men by Jesus Christ. on that day when, according to my gospel, God judges the secrets of men by Christ Jesus. This will take place on the day when God judges people’s secrets through Jesus Christ, as my gospel declares.
'Tis true, you bear the name of a Jew, you depend upon the law, and boast of your worship: But if you call yourself a Jew and rely on the law and boast in God Now you, if you call yourself a Jew; if you rely on the law and boast in God;
you know the divine will, and what is contrary thereto, having been educated in the law: and know his will and approve what is excellent, because you are instructed from the law; if you know his will and approve of what is superior because you are instructed by the law;
you think you are a guide to the blind, a light to those who are in darkness, and if you are sure that you yourself are a guide to the blind, a light to those who are in darkness, if you are convinced that you are a guide for the blind, a light for those who are in the dark,
an instructer of the ignorant, a teacher to the weak, because you have a clear view of the true meaning of the law. an instructor of the foolish, a teacher of children, having in the law the embodiment of knowledge and truth— an instructor of the foolish, a teacher of little children, because you have in the law the embodiment of knowledge and truth—
you therefore who instruct others don't you instruct yourself? you then who teach others, do you not teach yourself? While you preach against stealing, do you steal? you, then, who teach others, do you not teach yourself? You who preach against stealing, do you steal?
you who preach against stealing, do you steal? you who declaim against adultery, do you commit adultery? you who abhor idols, do you commit sacrilege? You who say that one must not commit adultery, do you commit adultery? You who abhor idols, do you rob temples? You who say that people should not commit adultery, do you commit adultery? You who abhor idols, do you rob temples?
and you, who glory in the law, do you dishonour God by the violation of the law? You who boast in the law dishonor God by breaking the law. You who boast in the law, do you dishonor God by breaking the law?
for (as it is written) the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles by your miscarriages. For, as it is written, “The name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you.” As it is written: “God’s name is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you.”
Circumcision indeed is an advantage, if you keep the law: but if you violate the law, your being a Jew makes you no better than a heathen. For circumcision indeed is of value if you obey the law, but if you break the law, your circumcision becomes uncircumcision. Circumcision has value if you observe the law, but if you break the law, you have become as though you had not been circumcised.
if therefore an uncircumcised Gentile keep the moral precepts contained in the law, shall not he be reckon'd, as if he were circumcised? So, if a man who is uncircumcised keeps the precepts of the law, will not his uncircumcision be regarded as circumcision? So then, if those who are not circumcised keep the law’s requirements, will they not be regarded as though they were circumcised?
and shall not a Gentile, tho' he is not actually circumcised, if he fulfil the law, condemn thee, who, tho' literally circumcised, dost yet transgress the law? Then he who is physically uncircumcised but keeps the law will condemn you who have the written code and circumcision but break the law. The one who is not circumcised physically and yet obeys the law will condemn you who, even though you have the written code and circumcision, are a lawbreaker.
for it is not the Jew in outward appearance, neither is it the external mark of circumcision: For no one is a Jew who is merely one outwardly, nor is circumcision outward and physical. A person is not a Jew who is one only outwardly, nor is circumcision merely outward and physical.
but it is the Jew, who is so inwardly, and it is the circumcision of the heart, according to the spiritual, not the literal sense, which have the approbation, I do not say of men, but of God. But a Jew is one inwardly, and circumcision is a matter of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the letter. His praise is not from man but from God. No, a person is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is circumcision of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the written code. Such a person’s praise is not from other people, but from God.
