Therefore thou art inexcusable, O man, whosoeuer thou art that condemnest: for in that that thou condemnest another, thou condemnest thy selfe: for thou that condemnest, doest the same things. | Therefore you have no excuse, O man, every one of you who judges. For in passing judgment on another you condemn yourself, because you, the judge, practice the very same things. | You, therefore, have no excuse, you who pass judgment on someone else, for at whatever point you judge another, you are condemning yourself, because you who pass judgment do the same things. |
But we know that the iudgement of God is according to trueth, against them which comit such things. | We know that the judgment of God rightly falls on those who practice such things. | Now we know that God’s judgment against those who do such things is based on truth. |
And thinkest thou this, O thou man, that condemnest them which doe such thinges, and doest the same, that thou shalt escape the iudgement of God? | Do you suppose, O man—you who judge those who practice such things and yet do them yourself—that you will escape the judgment of God? | So when you, a mere human being, pass judgment on them and yet do the same things, do you think you will escape God’s judgment? |
Or despisest thou the riches of his bountifulnesse, and patience, and long sufferance, not knowing that the bountifulnesse of God leadeth thee to repentance? | Or do you presume on the riches of his kindness and forbearance and patience, not knowing that God’s kindness is meant to lead you to repentance? | Or do you show contempt for the riches of his kindness, forbearance and patience, not realizing that God’s kindness is intended to lead you to repentance? |
But thou, after thine hardnesse, and heart that canot repent, heapest vp as a treasure vnto thy selfe wrath against the day of wrath, and of the declaration of the iust iudgement of God, | But because of your hard and impenitent heart you are storing up wrath for yourself on the day of wrath when God’s righteous judgment will be revealed. | But because of your stubbornness and your unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath against yourself for the day of God’s wrath, when his righteous judgment will be revealed. |
Who wil reward euery man according to his woorkes: | He will render to each one according to his works: | God “will repay each person according to what they have done.” |
That is, to them which through patience in well doing, seeke glorie, and honour, and immortalitie, euerlasting life: | to those who by patience in well-doing seek for glory and honor and immortality, he will give eternal life; | To those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor and immortality, he will give eternal life. |
But vnto them that are contentious and disobey the trueth, and obey vnrighteousnesse, shalbe indignation and wrath. | but for those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, there will be wrath and fury. | But for those who are self-seeking and who reject the truth and follow evil, there will be wrath and anger. |
Tribulation and anguish shalbe vpon the soule of euery man that doeth euill: of the Iewe first, and also of the Grecian. | There will be tribulation and distress for every human being who does evil, the Jew first and also the Greek, | There will be trouble and distress for every human being who does evil: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile; |
But to euery man that doeth good, shalbe glory, and honour, and peace: to the Iew first, and also to the Grecian. | but glory and honor and peace for everyone who does good, the Jew first and also the Greek. | but glory, honor and peace for everyone who does good: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile. |
For there is no respect of persons with God. | For God shows no partiality. | For God does not show favoritism. |
For as many as haue sinned without the Lawe, shall perish also without the Lawe: and as many as haue sinned in the Lawe, shall be iudged by the Lawe, | For all who have sinned without the law will also perish without the law, and all who have sinned under the law will be judged by the law. | All who sin apart from the law will also perish apart from the law, and all who sin under the law will be judged by the law. |
(For the hearers of the Lawe are not righteous before God: but the doers of the Lawe shalbe iustified. | For it is not the hearers of the law who are righteous before God, but the doers of the law who will be justified. | For it is not those who hear the law who are righteous in God’s sight, but it is those who obey the law who will be declared righteous. |
For when the Gentiles which haue not the Lawe, doe by nature, the things conteined in the Lawe, they hauing not the Lawe, are a Lawe vnto themselues, | For when Gentiles, who do not have the law, by nature do what the law requires, they are a law to themselves, even though they do not have the law. | (Indeed, when Gentiles, who do not have the law, do by nature things required by the law, they are a law for themselves, even though they do not have the law. |
Which shew the effect of the Lawe written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witnes, and their thoughts accusing one another, or excusing,) | They show that the work of the law is written on their hearts, while their conscience also bears witness, and their conflicting thoughts accuse or even excuse them | They show that the requirements of the law are written on their hearts, their consciences also bearing witness, and their thoughts sometimes accusing them and at other times even defending them.) |
At the day when God shall iudge the secretes of men by Iesus Christ, according to my Gospel. | on that day when, according to my gospel, God judges the secrets of men by Christ Jesus. | This will take place on the day when God judges people’s secrets through Jesus Christ, as my gospel declares. |
Beholde, thou art called a Iewe, and restest in the Lawe, and gloriest in God, | But if you call yourself a Jew and rely on the law and boast in God | Now you, if you call yourself a Jew; if you rely on the law and boast in God; |
And knowest his will, and triest the things that dissent from it, in that thou art instructed by the Lawe: | and know his will and approve what is excellent, because you are instructed from the law; | if you know his will and approve of what is superior because you are instructed by the law; |
And persuadest thy selfe that thou art a guide of the blinde, a light of them which are in darkenesse, | and if you are sure that you yourself are a guide to the blind, a light to those who are in darkness, | if you are convinced that you are a guide for the blind, a light for those who are in the dark, |
An instructer of them which lacke discretion, a teacher of the vnlearned, which hast the forme of knowledge, & of the truth in ye Law. | an instructor of the foolish, a teacher of children, having in the law the embodiment of knowledge and truth— | an instructor of the foolish, a teacher of little children, because you have in the law the embodiment of knowledge and truth— |
Thou therefore, which teachest another, teachest thou not thy selfe? thou that preachest, A man should not steale, doest thou steale? | you then who teach others, do you not teach yourself? While you preach against stealing, do you steal? | you, then, who teach others, do you not teach yourself? You who preach against stealing, do you steal? |
Thou that saist, A man should not commit adulterie, doest thou commit adulterie? thou that abhorrest idoles, committest thou sacrilege? | You who say that one must not commit adultery, do you commit adultery? You who abhor idols, do you rob temples? | You who say that people should not commit adultery, do you commit adultery? You who abhor idols, do you rob temples? |
Thou that gloriest in the Lawe, through breaking the Lawe, dishonourest thou God? | You who boast in the law dishonor God by breaking the law. | You who boast in the law, do you dishonor God by breaking the law? |
For ye Name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles through you, as it is written. | For, as it is written, “The name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you.” | As it is written: “God’s name is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you.” |
For circucision verely is profitable, if thou do the Lawe: but if thou be a transgressour of the Lawe, thy circumcision is made vncircumcision. | For circumcision indeed is of value if you obey the law, but if you break the law, your circumcision becomes uncircumcision. | Circumcision has value if you observe the law, but if you break the law, you have become as though you had not been circumcised. |
Therefore if the vncircumcision keepe the ordinances of the Lawe, shall not his vncircumcision be counted for circumcision? | So, if a man who is uncircumcised keeps the precepts of the law, will not his uncircumcision be regarded as circumcision? | So then, if those who are not circumcised keep the law’s requirements, will they not be regarded as though they were circumcised? |
And shall not vncircumcision which is by nature (if it keepe the Lawe) condemne thee which by the letter and circumcision art a transgressour of the Lawe? | Then he who is physically uncircumcised but keeps the law will condemn you who have the written code and circumcision but break the law. | The one who is not circumcised physically and yet obeys the law will condemn you who, even though you have the written code and circumcision, are a lawbreaker. |
For hee is not a Iewe, which is one outwarde: neither is that circumcision, which is outward in the flesh: | For no one is a Jew who is merely one outwardly, nor is circumcision outward and physical. | A person is not a Jew who is one only outwardly, nor is circumcision merely outward and physical. |
But he is a Iewe which is one wtin, and the circumcision is of the heart, in the spirite not in the letter, whose praise is not of men, but of God. | But a Jew is one inwardly, and circumcision is a matter of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the letter. His praise is not from man but from God. | No, a person is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is circumcision of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the written code. Such a person’s praise is not from other people, but from God. |
