1 For the choir director. A Maskil of the sons of Korah. God, we have heard with our ears — our ancestors have told us — the work you accomplished in their days, in days long ago: O God, we have heard with our ears, our fathers have told us, what deeds you performed in their days, in the days of old: For the director of music. Of the Sons of Korah. A maskil. We have heard it with our ears, O God; our ancestors have told us what you did in their days, in days long ago.
2 In order to plant them, you displaced the nations by your hand; in order to settle them, you brought disaster on the peoples. you with your own hand drove out the nations, but them you planted; you afflicted the peoples, but them you set free; With your hand you drove out the nations and planted our ancestors; you crushed the peoples and made our ancestors flourish.
3 For they did not take the land by their sword — their arm did not bring them victory — but by your right hand, your arm, and the light of your face, because you were favorable toward them. for not by their own sword did they win the land, nor did their own arm save them, but your right hand and your arm, and the light of your face, for you delighted in them. It was not by their sword that they won the land, nor did their arm bring them victory; it was your right hand, your arm, and the light of your face, for you loved them.
4 You are my King, my God, who ordains victories for Jacob. You are my King, O God; ordain salvation for Jacob! You are my King and my God, who decrees victories for Jacob.
5 Through you we drive back our foes; through your name we trample our enemies. Through you we push down our foes; through your name we tread down those who rise up against us. Through you we push back our enemies; through your name we trample our foes.
6 For I do not trust in my bow, and my sword does not bring me victory. For not in my bow do I trust, nor can my sword save me. I put no trust in my bow, my sword does not bring me victory;
7 But you give us victory over our foes and let those who hate us be disgraced. But you have saved us from our foes and have put to shame those who hate us. but you give us victory over our enemies, you put our adversaries to shame.
8 We boast in God all day long; we will praise your name forever. Selah In God we have boasted continually, and we will give thanks to your name forever. Selah In God we make our boast all day long, and we will praise your name forever.
9 But you have rejected and humiliated us; you do not march out with our armies. But you have rejected us and disgraced us and have not gone out with our armies. But now you have rejected and humbled us; you no longer go out with our armies.
10 You make us retreat from the foe, and those who hate us have taken plunder for themselves. You have made us turn back from the foe, and those who hate us have gotten spoil. You made us retreat before the enemy, and our adversaries have plundered us.
11 You hand us over to be eaten like sheep and scatter us among the nations. You have made us like sheep for slaughter and have scattered us among the nations. You gave us up to be devoured like sheep and have scattered us among the nations.
12 You sell your people for nothing; you make no profit from selling them. You have sold your people for a trifle, demanding no high price for them. You sold your people for a pittance, gaining nothing from their sale.
13 You make us an object of reproach to our neighbors, a source of mockery and ridicule to those around us. You have made us the taunt of our neighbors, the derision and scorn of those around us. You have made us a reproach to our neighbors, the scorn and derision of those around us.
14 You make us a joke among the nations, a laughingstock among the peoples. You have made us a byword among the nations, a laughingstock among the peoples. You have made us a byword among the nations; the peoples shake their heads at us.
15 My disgrace is before me all day long, and shame has covered my face, All day long my disgrace is before me, and shame has covered my face I live in disgrace all day long, and my face is covered with shame
16 because of the taunts of the scorner and reviler, because of the enemy and avenger. at the sound of the taunter and reviler, at the sight of the enemy and the avenger. at the taunts of those who reproach and revile me, because of the enemy, who is bent on revenge.
17 All this has happened to us, but we have not forgotten you or betrayed your covenant. All this has come upon us, though we have not forgotten you, and we have not been false to your covenant. All this came upon us, though we had not forgotten you; we had not been false to your covenant.
18 Our hearts have not turned back; our steps have not strayed from your path. Our heart has not turned back, nor have our steps departed from your way; Our hearts had not turned back; our feet had not strayed from your path.
19 But you have crushed us in a haunt of jackals and have covered us with deepest darkness. yet you have broken us in the place of jackals and covered us with the shadow of death. But you crushed us and made us a haunt for jackals; you covered us over with deep darkness.
20 If we had forgotten the name of our God and spread out our hands to a foreign god, If we had forgotten the name of our God or spread out our hands to a foreign god, If we had forgotten the name of our God or spread out our hands to a foreign god,
21 wouldn’t God have found this out, since he knows the secrets of the heart? would not God discover this? For he knows the secrets of the heart. would not God have discovered it, since he knows the secrets of the heart?
22 Because of you we are being put to death all day long; we are counted as sheep to be slaughtered. Yet for your sake we are killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered. Yet for your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.
23 Wake up, LORD! Why are you sleeping? Get up! Don’t reject us forever! Awake! Why are you sleeping, O Lord? Rouse yourself! Do not reject us forever! Awake, Lord! Why do you sleep? Rouse yourself! Do not reject us forever.
24 Why do you hide and forget our affliction and oppression? Why do you hide your face? Why do you forget our affliction and oppression? Why do you hide your face and forget our misery and oppression?
25 For we have sunk down to the dust; our bodies cling to the ground. For our soul is bowed down to the dust; our belly clings to the ground. We are brought down to the dust; our bodies cling to the ground.
26 Rise up! Help us! Redeem us because of your faithful love. Rise up; come to our help! Redeem us for the sake of your steadfast love! Rise up and help us; rescue us because of your unfailing love.
