1 To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of the sons of Korah. A skillful song, or a didactic or reflective poem. We have heard with our ears, O God, Our fathers have told us The work You did in their days, In the days of old. O God, we have heard with our ears, our fathers have told us, what deeds you performed in their days, in the days of old: For the director of music. Of the Sons of Korah. A maskil. We have heard it with our ears, O God; our ancestors have told us what you did in their days, in days long ago.
2 You drove out the [pagan] nations with Your own hand; Then you planted and established them (Israel); [It was by Your power that] You uprooted the [pagan] peoples, Then You spread them abroad. you with your own hand drove out the nations, but them you planted; you afflicted the peoples, but them you set free; With your hand you drove out the nations and planted our ancestors; you crushed the peoples and made our ancestors flourish.
3 For our fathers did not possess the land [of Canaan] by their own sword, Nor did their own arm save them, But Your right hand and Your arm and the light of Your presence, Because You favored and delighted in them. for not by their own sword did they win the land, nor did their own arm save them, but your right hand and your arm, and the light of your face, for you delighted in them. It was not by their sword that they won the land, nor did their arm bring them victory; it was your right hand, your arm, and the light of your face, for you loved them.
4 You are my King, O God; Command victories and deliverance for Jacob (Israel). You are my King, O God; ordain salvation for Jacob! You are my King and my God, who decrees victories for Jacob.
5 Through You we will gore our enemies [like a bull]; Through Your name we will trample down those who rise up against us. Through you we push down our foes; through your name we tread down those who rise up against us. Through you we push back our enemies; through your name we trample our foes.
6 For I will not trust in my bow, Nor will my sword save me. For not in my bow do I trust, nor can my sword save me. I put no trust in my bow, my sword does not bring me victory;
7 But You have saved us from our enemies, And You have put them to shame and humiliated those who hate us. But you have saved us from our foes and have put to shame those who hate us. but you give us victory over our enemies, you put our adversaries to shame.
8 In God we have boasted all the day long, And we will praise and give thanks to Your name forever. Selah. In God we have boasted continually, and we will give thanks to your name forever. Selah In God we make our boast all day long, and we will praise your name forever.
9 But now You have rejected us and brought us to dishonor, And You do not go out with our armies [to lead us to victory]. But you have rejected us and disgraced us and have not gone out with our armies. But now you have rejected and humbled us; you no longer go out with our armies.
10 You make us turn back from the enemy, And those who hate us have taken spoil for themselves. You have made us turn back from the foe, and those who hate us have gotten spoil. You made us retreat before the enemy, and our adversaries have plundered us.
11 You have made us like sheep to be eaten [as mutton] And have scattered us [in exile] among the nations. You have made us like sheep for slaughter and have scattered us among the nations. You gave us up to be devoured like sheep and have scattered us among the nations.
12 You sell Your people cheaply, And have not increased Your wealth by their sale. You have sold your people for a trifle, demanding no high price for them. You sold your people for a pittance, gaining nothing from their sale.
13 You have made us the reproach and taunt of our neighbors, A scoffing and a derision to those around us. You have made us the taunt of our neighbors, the derision and scorn of those around us. You have made us a reproach to our neighbors, the scorn and derision of those around us.
14 You make us a byword among the nations, A laughingstock among the people. You have made us a byword among the nations, a laughingstock among the peoples. You have made us a byword among the nations; the peoples shake their heads at us.
15 My dishonor is before me all day long, And humiliation has covered my face, All day long my disgrace is before me, and shame has covered my face I live in disgrace all day long, and my face is covered with shame
16 Because of the voice of the taunter and reviler, Because of the presence of the enemy and the avenger. at the sound of the taunter and reviler, at the sight of the enemy and the avenger. at the taunts of those who reproach and revile me, because of the enemy, who is bent on revenge.
17 All this has come upon us, yet we have not forgotten You, Nor have we been false to Your covenant [which You made with our fathers]. All this has come upon us, though we have not forgotten you, and we have not been false to your covenant. All this came upon us, though we had not forgotten you; we had not been false to your covenant.
18 Our heart has not turned back, Nor have our steps wandered from Your path, Our heart has not turned back, nor have our steps departed from your way; Our hearts had not turned back; our feet had not strayed from your path.
19 Yet You have [distressingly] crushed us in the place of jackals And covered us with [the deep darkness of] the shadow of death. yet you have broken us in the place of jackals and covered us with the shadow of death. But you crushed us and made us a haunt for jackals; you covered us over with deep darkness.
20 If we had forgotten the name of our God Or stretched out our hands to a strange god, If we had forgotten the name of our God or spread out our hands to a foreign god, If we had forgotten the name of our God or spread out our hands to a foreign god,
21 Would not God discover this? For He knows the secrets of the heart. would not God discover this? For he knows the secrets of the heart. would not God have discovered it, since he knows the secrets of the heart?
22 But for Your sake we are killed all the day long; We are considered as sheep to be slaughtered. Yet for your sake we are killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered. Yet for your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.
23 Awake! Why do You sleep, O Lord? Awaken, do not reject us forever. Awake! Why are you sleeping, O Lord? Rouse yourself! Do not reject us forever! Awake, Lord! Why do you sleep? Rouse yourself! Do not reject us forever.
24 Why do You hide Your face And forget our affliction and our oppression? Why do you hide your face? Why do you forget our affliction and oppression? Why do you hide your face and forget our misery and oppression?
25 For our life has melted away into the dust; Our body clings to the ground. For our soul is bowed down to the dust; our belly clings to the ground. We are brought down to the dust; our bodies cling to the ground.
26 Rise up! Come be our help, And ransom us for the sake of Your steadfast love. Rise up; come to our help! Redeem us for the sake of your steadfast love! Rise up and help us; rescue us because of your unfailing love.
