1 A prayer of David. LORD, hear a just cause; pay attention to my cry; listen to my prayer — from lips free of deceit. Hear a just cause, O LORD; attend to my cry! Give ear to my prayer from lips free of deceit! A prayer of David. Hear me, LORD, my plea is just; listen to my cry. Hear my prayer— it does not rise from deceitful lips.
2 Let my vindication come from you, for you see what is right. From your presence let my vindication come! Let your eyes behold the right! Let my vindication come from you; may your eyes see what is right.
3 You have tested my heart; you have examined me at night. You have tried me and found nothing evil; I have determined that my mouth will not sin. You have tried my heart, you have visited me by night, you have tested me, and you will find nothing; I have purposed that my mouth will not transgress. Though you probe my heart, though you examine me at night and test me, you will find that I have planned no evil; my mouth has not transgressed.
4 Concerning what people do: by the words from your lips I have avoided the ways of the violent. With regard to the works of man, by the word of your lips I have avoided the ways of the violent. Though people tried to bribe me, I have kept myself from the ways of the violent through what your lips have commanded.
5 My steps are on your paths; my feet have not slipped. My steps have held fast to your paths; my feet have not slipped. My steps have held to your paths; my feet have not stumbled.
6 I call on you, God, because you will answer me; listen closely to me; hear what I say. I call upon you, for you will answer me, O God; incline your ear to me; hear my words. I call on you, my God, for you will answer me; turn your ear to me and hear my prayer.
7 Display the wonders of your faithful love, Savior of all who seek refuge from those who rebel against your right hand. Wondrously show your steadfast love, O Savior of those who seek refuge from their adversaries at your right hand. Show me the wonders of your great love, you who save by your right hand those who take refuge in you from their foes.
8 Protect me as the pupil of your eye; hide me in the shadow of your wings Keep me as the apple of your eye; hide me in the shadow of your wings, Keep me as the apple of your eye; hide me in the shadow of your wings
9 from the wicked who treat me violently, my deadly enemies who surround me. from the wicked who do me violence, my deadly enemies who surround me. from the wicked who are out to destroy me, from my mortal enemies who surround me.
10 They are uncaring; their mouths speak arrogantly. They close their hearts to pity; with their mouths they speak arrogantly. They close up their callous hearts, and their mouths speak with arrogance.
11 They advance against me; now they surround me. They are determined to throw me to the ground. They have now surrounded our steps; they set their eyes to cast us to the ground. They have tracked me down, they now surround me, with eyes alert, to throw me to the ground.
12 They are like a lion eager to tear, like a young lion lurking in ambush. He is like a lion eager to tear, as a young lion lurking in ambush. They are like a lion hungry for prey, like a fierce lion crouching in cover.
13 Rise up, LORD! Confront him; bring him down. With your sword, save me from the wicked. Arise, O LORD! Confront him, subdue him! Deliver my soul from the wicked by your sword, Rise up, LORD, confront them, bring them down; with your sword rescue me from the wicked.
14 With your hand, LORD, save me from men, from men of the world whose portion is in this life: You fill their bellies with what you have in store; their sons are satisfied, and they leave their surplus to their children. from men by your hand, O LORD, from men of the world whose portion is in this life. You fill their womb with treasure; they are satisfied with children, and they leave their abundance to their infants. By your hand save me from such people, LORD, from those of this world whose reward is in this life. May what you have stored up for the wicked fill their bellies; may their children gorge themselves on it, and may there be leftovers for their little ones.
15 But I will see your face in righteousness; when I awake, I will be satisfied with your presence. As for me, I shall behold your face in righteousness; when I awake, I shall be satisfied with your likeness. As for me, I will be vindicated and will see your face; when I awake, I will be satisfied with seeing your likeness.
