Καὶ ἔρχονται Σαδδουκαῖοι πρὸς αὐτόν οἵτινες λέγουσιν ἀνάστασιν μὴ εἶναι καὶ ἐπηρώτων αὐτὸν λέγοντες And Sadducees came to him, who say that there is no resurrection. And they asked him a question, saying, Then the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to him with a question.
Διδάσκαλε Μωϋσῆς ἔγραψεν ἡμῖν ὅτι ἐάν τινος ἀδελφὸς ἀποθάνῃ καὶ καταλίπῃ γυναῖκα καὶ μὴ ἀφῇ τέκνον ἵνα λάβῃ ὁ ἀδελφὸς αὐτοῦ τὴν γυναῖκα καὶ ἐξαναστήσῃ σπέρμα τῷ ἀδελφῷ αὐτοῦ “Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man’s brother dies and leaves a wife, but leaves no child, the man must take the widow and raise up offspring for his brother. “Teacher,” they said, “Moses wrote for us that if a man’s brother dies and leaves a wife but no children, the man must marry the widow and raise up offspring for his brother.
ἑπτὰ ἀδελφοὶ ἦσαν καὶ ὁ πρῶτος ἔλαβεν γυναῖκα καὶ ἀποθνῄσκων οὐκ ἀφῆκεν σπέρμα There were seven brothers; the first took a wife, and when he died left no offspring. Now there were seven brothers. The first one married and died without leaving any children.
καὶ ὁ δεύτερος ἔλαβεν αὐτήν καὶ ἀπέθανεν μὴ καταλιπὼν σπέρμα καὶ ὁ τρίτος ὡσαύτως And the second took her, and died, leaving no offspring. And the third likewise. The second one married the widow, but he also died, leaving no child. It was the same with the third.
καὶ οἱ ἑπτὰ οὐκ ἀφῆκαν σπέρμα ἔσχατον πάντων καὶ ἡ γυνὴ ἀπέθανεν And the seven left no offspring. Last of all the woman also died. In fact, none of the seven left any children. Last of all, the woman died too.
ἐν τῇ ἀναστάσει ὅταν ἀναστῶσιν τίνος αὐτῶν ἔσται γυνή οἱ γὰρ ἑπτὰ ἔσχον αὐτὴν γυναῖκα In the resurrection, when they rise again, whose wife will she be? For the seven had her as wife.” At the resurrection whose wife will she be, since the seven were married to her?”
Ἔφη αὐτοῖς ὁ Ἰησοῦς Οὐ διὰ τοῦτο πλανᾶσθε μὴ εἰδότες τὰς γραφὰς μηδὲ τὴν δύναμιν τοῦ Θεοῦ Jesus said to them, “Is this not the reason you are wrong, because you know neither the Scriptures nor the power of God? Jesus replied, “Are you not in error because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God?
ὅταν γὰρ ἐκ νεκρῶν ἀναστῶσιν οὔτε γαμοῦσιν οὔτε γαμίζονται ἀλλ’ εἰσὶν ὡς ἄγγελοι ἐν τοῖς οὐρανοῖς For when they rise from the dead, they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven. When the dead rise, they will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven.
Περὶ δὲ τῶν νεκρῶν ὅτι ἐγείρονται οὐκ ἀνέγνωτε ἐν τῇ βίβλῳ Μωϋσέως ἐπὶ τοῦ Βάτου πῶς εἶπεν αὐτῷ ὁ Θεὸς λέγων Ἐγὼ ὁ Θεὸς Ἀβραὰμ καὶ ‹ὁ› Θεὸς Ἰσαὰκ καὶ ‹ὁ› Θεὸς Ἰακώβ And as for the dead being raised, have you not read in the book of Moses, in the passage about the bush, how God spoke to him, saying, ‘I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? Now about the dead rising—have you not read in the Book of Moses, in the account of the burning bush, how God said to him, ‘I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’?
οὐκ ἔστιν Θεὸς νεκρῶν ἀλλὰ ζώντων πολὺ πλανᾶσθε He is not God of the dead, but of the living. You are quite wrong.” He is not the God of the dead, but of the living. You are badly mistaken!”
