5	And He said to them, “Who of you⁺ will have a friend and will go to him at midnight and would say to him, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves,	And he said to them, “Which of you who has a friend will go to him at midnight and say to him, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves,	Then Jesus said to them, “Suppose you have a friend, and you go to him at midnight and say, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves of bread;
6	since a friend of mine came to me from a journey, and I have nothing that I will set before him.’?	for a friend of mine has arrived on a journey, and I have nothing to set before him’;	a friend of mine on a journey has come to me, and I have no food to offer him.’
7	And he, answering from within, may say, ‘Do not cause me trouble; already the door has been shut, and my children are with me in the bed. I am not able, having risen up, to give to you.’	and he will answer from within, ‘Do not bother me; the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed. I cannot get up and give you anything’?	And suppose the one inside answers, ‘Don’t bother me. The door is already locked, and my children and I are in bed. I can’t get up and give you anything.’
8	I say to you⁺, even if he will not give to him, having risen up because of being his friend, yet because of his persistence, having risen, he will give him as much as he needs.	I tell you, though he will not get up and give him anything because he is his friend, yet because of his impudence he will rise and give him whatever he needs.	I tell you, even though he will not get up and give you the bread because of friendship, yet because of your shameless audacity he will surely get up and give you as much as you need.
9	And I say to you⁺: Ask, and it will be given to you⁺; seek, and you⁺ will find; knock, and it will be opened to you⁺.	And I tell you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.	“So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.
10	For everyone asking receives; and the one seeking finds; and to the one knocking, it will be opened.	For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened.	For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.
11	And which father of you⁺, if the son will ask for a fish, instead of even a fish, will give to him a serpent?	What father among you, if his son asks for a fish, will instead of a fish give him a serpent;	“Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead?
12	Or also, if he will ask for an egg, will give to him a scorpion?	or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion?	Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion?
13	Therefore if you⁺, being evil, know to give good gifts to your⁺ children, how much more will the Father who is from heaven give the Holy Spirit to those asking Him!”	If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”	If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”
14	And He was casting out a demon, and it was mute; and it came to pass, on the demon having gone out, that the mute man spoke. And the crowds marveled.	Now he was casting out a demon that was mute. When the demon had gone out, the mute man spoke, and the people marveled.	Jesus was driving out a demon that was mute. When the demon left, the man who had been mute spoke, and the crowd was amazed.
15	And some of them said, “By Beelzebul, the ruler of the demons, He casts out the demons.”	But some of them said, “He casts out demons by Beelzebul, the prince of demons,”	But some of them said, “By Beelzebul, the prince of demons, he is driving out demons.”
16	And others, testing, were seeking from Him a sign out of heaven.	while others, to test him, kept seeking from him a sign from heaven.	Others tested him by asking for a sign from heaven.
17	But He, knowing their thoughts, said to them, “Every kingdom having been divided against itself is brought to desolation; and a house against a house falls.	But he, knowing their thoughts, said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself is laid waste, and a divided household falls.	Jesus knew their thoughts and said to them: “Any kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and a house divided against itself will fall.
18	And if Satan also was divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand? For you⁺ say I cast out the demons by Beelzebul.	And if Satan also is divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand? For you say that I cast out demons by Beelzebul.	If Satan is divided against himself, how can his kingdom stand? I say this because you claim that I drive out demons by Beelzebul.
19	And if I cast out the demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your⁺ sons cast them out? Because of this, they will be your⁺ judges.	And if I cast out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your sons cast them out? Therefore they will be your judges.	Now if I drive out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your followers drive them out? So then, they will be your judges.
20	But if I cast out the demons by the finger of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon you⁺.	But if it is by the finger of God that I cast out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.	But if I drive out demons by the finger of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.
21	When the strong man, being armed, might guard his house, his possessions are in peace.	When a strong man, fully armed, guards his own palace, his goods are safe;	“When a strong man, fully armed, guards his own house, his possessions are safe.
22	But when one stronger than he, having come upon him, might overcome him, he takes away his full armor in which he had trusted, and he divides his plunder.	but when one stronger than he attacks him and overcomes him, he takes away his armor in which he trusted and divides his spoil.	But when someone stronger attacks and overpowers him, he takes away the armor in which the man trusted and divides up his plunder.
23	The one not being with Me is against Me, and the one not gathering with Me scatters.	Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.	“Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.
24	When the unclean spirit may go out from the man, it passes through waterless places, seeking rest. And not finding it, then it says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came out.’	“When the unclean spirit has gone out of a person, it passes through waterless places seeking rest, and finding none it says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’	“When an impure spirit comes out of a person, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it. Then it says, ‘I will return to the house I left.’
25	And having come, it finds it swept and put in order.	And when it comes, it finds the house swept and put in order.	When it arrives, it finds the house swept clean and put in order.
26	Then it goes and takes along seven other spirits more evil than itself, and having entered, they dwell there; and the last of that man becomes worse than the first.”	Then it goes and brings seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they enter and dwell there. And the last state of that person is worse than the first.”	Then it goes and takes seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final condition of that person is worse than the first.”
27	And it came to pass, in His saying these things, that a certain woman out of the crowd, having lifted up her voice, said to Him, “Blessed is the womb having borne You and the breasts at which You nursed!”	As he said these things, a woman in the crowd raised her voice and said to him, “Blessed is the womb that bore you, and the breasts at which you nursed!”	As Jesus was saying these things, a woman in the crowd called out, “Blessed is the mother who gave you birth and nursed you.”
28	But He said, “Rather, blessed are those hearing the word of God and keeping it.”	But he said, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it!”	He replied, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it.”
29	Now the crowds being pressed around together, He began to say, “This generation is an evil generation; it seeks a sign, and no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah.	When the crowds were increasing, he began to say, “This generation is an evil generation. It seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah.	As the crowds increased, Jesus said, “This is a wicked generation. It asks for a sign, but none will be given it except the sign of Jonah.
30	For just as Jonah was a sign to the Ninevites, so also the Son of Man will be to this generation.	For as Jonah became a sign to the people of Nineveh, so will the Son of Man be to this generation.	For as Jonah was a sign to the Ninevites, so also will the Son of Man be to this generation.
31	The Queen of the South will rise up in the judgment with the men of this generation and will condemn them; for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and behold, One greater than Solomon is here.	The queen of the South will rise up at the judgment with the men of this generation and condemn them, for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and behold, something greater than Solomon is here.	The Queen of the South will rise at the judgment with the people of this generation and condemn them, for she came from the ends of the earth to listen to Solomon’s wisdom; and now something greater than Solomon is here.
32	The men of Nineveh will stand up in the judgment with this generation and will condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and behold, One greater than Jonah is here. 33	No one having lit a lamp puts it in secret, nor under the basket, but on the lampstand, so that those entering may see the light.	“No one after lighting a lamp puts it in a cellar or under a basket, but on a stand, so that those who enter may see the light.	“No one lights a lamp and puts it in a place where it will be hidden, or under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, so that those who come in may see the light.
34	The lamp of the body is your eye. When your eye may be sound, also your whole body is full of light; but when it may be evil, your body is also full of darkness.	Your eye is the lamp of your body. When your eye is healthy, your whole body is full of light, but when it is bad, your body is full of darkness.	Your eye is the lamp of your body. When your eyes are healthy, your whole body also is full of light. But when they are unhealthy, your body also is full of darkness.
35	Take heed, therefore, that the light that is in you is not darkness.	Therefore be careful lest the light in you be darkness.	See to it, then, that the light within you is not darkness.
36	If, therefore, your whole body is full of light, not having any part full of darkness, the whole will be full of light, as when the lamp shining may shine on you.”	If then your whole body is full of light, having no part dark, it will be wholly bright, as when a lamp with its rays gives you light.”	Therefore, if your whole body is full of light, and no part of it dark, it will be just as full of light as when a lamp shines its light on you.”
37	And in His speaking, a Pharisee asked Him that He might dine with him. And having entered, He reclined.	While Jesus was speaking, a Pharisee asked him to dine with him, so he went in and reclined at table.	When Jesus had finished speaking, a Pharisee invited him to eat with him; so he went in and reclined at the table.
38	But the Pharisee, having seen, marveled that He did not wash first before the dinner.	The Pharisee was astonished to see that he did not first wash before dinner.	But the Pharisee was surprised when he noticed that Jesus did not first wash before the meal.
39	But the Lord said to him, “Now you⁺, the Pharisees, you⁺ cleanse the outside of the cup and of the dish, but your⁺ inside is full of plundering and of wickedness.	And the Lord said to him, “Now you Pharisees cleanse the outside of the cup and of the dish, but inside you are full of greed and wickedness.	Then the Lord said to him, “Now then, you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside you are full of greed and wickedness.
40	Fools! Did not the One having made the outside also make the inside?	You fools! Did not he who made the outside make the inside also?	You foolish people! Did not the one who made the outside make the inside also?
41	But give as alms the things being within, and behold, all things are clean for you⁺.	But give as alms those things that are within, and behold, everything is clean for you.	But now as for what is inside you—be generous to the poor, and everything will be clean for you.
42	But woe to you⁺, the Pharisees, because you⁺ pay tithes of mint and rue and every herb, and you⁺ pass by the judgment and the love of God. But it was necessary to do these things, and those not to neglect.	“But woe to you Pharisees! For you tithe mint and rue and every herb, and neglect justice and the love of God. These you ought to have done, without neglecting the others.	“Woe to you Pharisees, because you give God a tenth of your mint, rue and all other kinds of garden herbs, but you neglect justice and the love of God. You should have practiced the latter without leaving the former undone.
43	Woe to you⁺, the Pharisees, because you⁺ love the first seat in the synagogues and the greetings in the marketplaces.	Woe to you Pharisees! For you love the best seat in the synagogues and greetings in the marketplaces.	“Woe to you Pharisees, because you love the most important seats in the synagogues and respectful greetings in the marketplaces.
44	Woe to you⁺, because you⁺ are like unmarked tombs, and the men walking above do not know.”	Woe to you! For you are like unmarked graves, and people walk over them without knowing it.”	“Woe to you, because you are like unmarked graves, which people walk over without knowing it.”
45	But answering, one of the lawyers says to Him, “Teacher, saying these things, You insult us also.”	One of the lawyers answered him, “Teacher, in saying these things you insult us also.”	One of the experts in the law answered him, “Teacher, when you say these things, you insult us also.”
46	But He said, “Woe also to you⁺, the lawyers, because you⁺ burden men with burdens hard to bear, and you⁺ yourselves do not touch the burdens with one of your⁺ fingers.	And he said, “Woe to you lawyers also! For you load people with burdens hard to bear, and you yourselves do not touch the burdens with one of your fingers.	Jesus replied, “And you experts in the law, woe to you, because you load people down with burdens they can hardly carry, and you yourselves will not lift one finger to help them.
47	Woe to you⁺, because you⁺ build the tombs of the prophets, but your⁺ fathers killed them.	Woe to you! For you build the tombs of the prophets whom your fathers killed.	“Woe to you, because you build tombs for the prophets, and it was your ancestors who killed them.
48	So you⁺ are witnesses and consent to the works of your⁺ fathers, because they indeed killed them, and you⁺ build the tombs.	So you are witnesses and you consent to the deeds of your fathers, for they killed them, and you build their tombs.	So you testify that you approve of what your ancestors did; they killed the prophets, and you build their tombs.
49	Because of this also the wisdom of God said, ‘I will send to them prophets and apostles, and some of them they will kill and persecute,’	Therefore also the Wisdom of God said, ‘I will send them prophets and apostles, some of whom they will kill and persecute,’	Because of this, God in his wisdom said, ‘I will send them prophets and apostles, some of whom they will kill and others they will persecute.’
50	so that the blood of all the prophets poured out from the foundation of the world might be required from this generation,	so that the blood of all the prophets, shed from the foundation of the world, may be charged against this generation,	Therefore this generation will be held responsible for the blood of all the prophets that has been shed since the beginning of the world,
51	from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, the one having perished between the altar and the house. Yes, I say to you⁺, it will be required from this generation.	from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who perished between the altar and the sanctuary. Yes, I tell you, it will be required of this generation.	from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who was killed between the altar and the sanctuary. Yes, I tell you, this generation will be held responsible for it all.
52	Woe to you⁺, the lawyers, because you⁺ took away the key of knowledge. You yourselves did not enter, and you⁺ hindered those entering.”	Woe to you lawyers! For you have taken away the key of knowledge. You did not enter yourselves, and you hindered those who were entering.”	“Woe to you experts in the law, because you have taken away the key to knowledge. You yourselves have not entered, and you have hindered those who were entering.”
53	On His having gone out from there, the scribes and the Pharisees began terribly to press upon Him and to make Him speak about many things,	As he went away from there, the scribes and the Pharisees began to press him hard and to provoke him to speak about many things,	When Jesus went outside, the Pharisees and the teachers of the law began to oppose him fiercely and to besiege him with questions,
