13	who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.	who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.	children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.
14	The Word became flesh and lived among us. We saw his glory, such glory as of the only born Son of the Father, full of grace and truth. 15	John testified about him. 18	No one has seen God at any time. The only born Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, has declared him.	No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father’s side, he has made him known. 19	This is John’s testimony, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?”	And this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?”	Now this was John’s testimony when the Jewish leaders in Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him who he was.
20	He declared, and didn’t deny, but he declared, “I am not the Christ.”	He confessed, and did not deny, but confessed, “I am not the Christ.”	He did not fail to confess, but confessed freely, “I am not the Messiah.”
21	They asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you the prophet?” He answered, “No.”	And they asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” And he answered, “No.”	They asked him, “Then who are you? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” He answered, “No.”
22	They said therefore to him, “Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?”	So they said to him, “Who are you? We need to give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?”	Finally they said, “Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?”
23	He said, “I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord,’ as Isaiah the prophet said.”	He said, “I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord,’ as the prophet Isaiah said.”	John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet, “I am the voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way for the Lord.’”
24	The ones who had been sent were from the Pharisees.	(Now they had been sent from the Pharisees.)	Now the Pharisees who had been sent
25	They asked him, “Why then do you baptize if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the prophet?”	They asked him, “Then why are you baptizing, if you are neither the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?”	questioned him, “Why then do you baptize if you are not the Messiah, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?”
26	John answered them, “I baptize in water, but among you stands one whom you don’t know.	John answered them, “I baptize with water, but among you stands one you do not know,	“I baptize with water,” John replied, “but among you stands one you do not know.
27	He is the one who comes after me, who is preferred before me, whose sandal strap I’m not worthy to loosen.”	even he who comes after me, the strap of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie.”	He is the one who comes after me, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie.”
28	These things were done in Bethany beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing.	These things took place in Bethany across the Jordan, where John was baptizing.	This all happened at Bethany on the other side of the Jordan, where John was baptizing.
29	The next day, he saw Jesus coming to him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! 31	I didn’t know him, but for this reason I came baptizing in water, that he would be revealed to Israel.”	I myself did not know him, but for this purpose I came baptizing with water, that he might be revealed to Israel.”	I myself did not know him, but the reason I came baptizing with water was that he might be revealed to Israel.”
32	John testified, saying, “I have seen the Spirit descending like a dove out of heaven, and it remained on him.	And John bore witness: “I saw the Spirit descend from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him.	Then John gave this testimony: “I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him.
33	I didn’t recognize him, but he who sent me to baptize in water said to me, ‘On whomever you will see the Spirit descending and remaining on him is he who baptizes in the Holy Spirit.’	I myself did not know him, but he who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, this is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’	And I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, ‘The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’
34	I have seen and have testified that this is the Son of God.”	And I have seen and have borne witness that this is the Son of God.”	I have seen and I testify that this is God’s Chosen One.”
35	Again, the next day, John was standing with two of his disciples,	The next day again John was standing with two of his disciples,	The next day John was there again with two of his disciples.

39	He said to them, “Come and see.” They came and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day. It was about the tenth hour.	He said to them, “Come and you will see.” So they came and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day, for it was about the tenth hour.	“Come,” he replied, “and you will see.” So they went and saw where he was staying, and they spent that day with him. It was about four in the afternoon.
40	One of the two who heard John and followed him was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother.	One of the two who heard John speak and followed Jesus was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother.	Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus.
41	He first found his own brother, Simon, and said to him, “We have found the Messiah!” (which is, being interpreted, Christ).	He first found his own brother Simon and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which means Christ).	The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, “We have found the Messiah” (that is, the Christ).
42	He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon the son of Jonah. You shall be called Cephas” (which is by interpretation, Peter).	He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon the son of John. You shall be called Cephas” (which means Peter).	And he brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas” (which, when translated, is Peter).
43	On the next day, he was determined to go out into Galilee, and he found Philip. Jesus said to him, “Follow me.”	The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, “Follow me.”	The next day Jesus decided to leave for Galilee. Finding Philip, he said to him, “Follow me.”
44	Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter.	Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter.	Philip, like Andrew and Peter, was from the town of Bethsaida.
45	Philip found Nathanael, and said to him, “We have found him of whom Moses in the law and also the prophets, wrote: Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.”	Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found him of whom Moses in the Law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.”	Philip found Nathanael and told him, “We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote—Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.”
46	Nathanael said to him, “Can any good thing come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.”	Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.”	“Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?” Nathanael asked. “Come and see,” said Philip.
47	Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and said about him, “Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom is no deceit!”	Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said of him, “Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom there is no deceit!”	When Jesus saw Nathanael approaching, he said of him, “Here truly is an Israelite in whom there is no deceit.”
48	Nathanael said to him, “How do you know me?” Jesus answered him, “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.”	Nathanael said to him, “How do you know me?” Jesus answered him, “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.”	“How do you know me?” Nathanael asked. Jesus answered, “I saw you while you were still under the fig tree before Philip called you.”
49	Nathanael answered him, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are King of Israel!”	Nathanael answered him, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!”	Then Nathanael declared, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the king of Israel.”
50	Jesus answered him, “Because I told you, ‘I saw you underneath the fig tree,’ do you believe? You will see greater things than these!”	Jesus answered him, “Because I said to you, ‘I saw you under the fig tree,’ do you believe? You will see greater things than these.”	Jesus said, “You believe because I told you I saw you under the fig tree. You will see greater things than that.”
51	He said to him, “Most certainly, I tell you all, hereafter you will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”	And he said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”	He then added, “Very truly I tell you, you will see ‘heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending on’ the Son of Man.”
