1	THE Word was in the beginning, and that very Word was with God, and God was that Word.	In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.	In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
2	The same was in the beginning with God.	He was in the beginning with God.	He was with God in the beginning.
3	Everything came to be by his hand; and without him not even one thing came to be of what was created.	All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made.	Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.
4	The life was in him, and the life is the light of men.	In him was life, and the life was the light of men.	In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind.

12	But those who received him, to them he gave power to become sons of God, especially to those who believed in his name;	But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God,	Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God—
13	Those who are not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but born of God.	who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.	children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.
14	And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw his glory, a glory like that of the firstborn of the Father, full of grace and truth.	And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.	The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. 15	John witnessed concerning him and cried and said, This is the one of whom I said, He is coming after me, and yet he is ahead of me, because he was before me.	(John bore witness about him, and cried out, “This was he of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me ranks before me, because he was before me.’”)	(John testified concerning him. He cried out, saying, “This is the one I spoke about when I said, ‘He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’”)
16	And of his fulness we have all received, grace for grace.	For from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace.	Out of his fullness we have all received grace in place of grace already given.
17	For the law was given by Moses; but truth and grace came into being by Jesus Christ.	For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.	For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
18	No man has ever seen God; but the firstborn of God, who is in the bosom of his Father, he has declared him.	No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father’s side, he has made him known.	No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is himself God and is in closest relationship with the Father, has made him known.
19	This is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent to him priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, Who are you?	And this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?”	Now this was John’s testimony when the Jewish leaders in Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him who he was.
20	And he confessed and did not deny it; but he declared, I am not the Christ.	He confessed, and did not deny, but confessed, “I am not the Christ.”	He did not fail to confess, but confessed freely, “I am not the Messiah.”
21	Then they asked him again, What then? Are you Elijah? And he said, I am not. Are you a prophet? And he said, No.	And they asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” And he answered, “No.”	They asked him, “Then who are you? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” He answered, “No.”
22	Then they said to him, Who are you? so that we may give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say concerning yourself?	So they said to him, “Who are you? We need to give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?”	Finally they said, “Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?”
23	He said, I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Straighten the highway of the Lord, as the prophet Isaiah said.	He said, “I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord,’ as the prophet Isaiah said.”	John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet, “I am the voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way for the Lord.’”
24	Those who were sent were from the Pharisees.	(Now they had been sent from the Pharisees.)	Now the Pharisees who had been sent
25	And they asked him and said to him, Why then do you baptize, if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor a prophet?	They asked him, “Then why are you baptizing, if you are neither the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?”	questioned him, “Why then do you baptize if you are not the Messiah, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?”
26	John answered and said to them, I baptize with water; but among you stands one whom you do not know;	John answered them, “I baptize with water, but among you stands one you do not know,	“I baptize with water,” John replied, “but among you stands one you do not know.
27	This is the one who comes after me, and is ahead of me, the one even the strings of whose shoes I am not good enough to untie.	even he who comes after me, the strap of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie.”	He is the one who comes after me, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie.”
28	These things happened in Bethany, at the Jordan crossing, where John was baptizing.	These things took place in Bethany across the Jordan, where John was baptizing.	This all happened at Bethany on the other side of the Jordan, where John was baptizing.
29	The next day John saw Jesus coming to him, and he said, Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!	The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!	The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!
30	This is the one of whom I said, The man who comes after me is yet ahead of me, because he was before me.	This is he of whom I said, ‘After me comes a man who ranks before me, because he was before me.’	This is the one I meant when I said, ‘A man who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’
31	And I did not know him; but that he might be made known to Israel, I came to baptize with water.	I myself did not know him, but for this purpose I came baptizing with water, that he might be revealed to Israel.”	I myself did not know him, but the reason I came baptizing with water was that he might be revealed to Israel.”
32	And John testified and said, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it rested upon him.	And John bore witness: “I saw the Spirit descend from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him.	Then John gave this testimony: “I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him.
33	And yet I did not know him; but he who sent me to baptize with water, said to me, The one upon whom you see the Spirit descending and resting, he is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.	I myself did not know him, but he who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, this is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’	And I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, ‘The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’
34	And I saw and testified that this is the Son of God.	And I have seen and have borne witness that this is the Son of God.”	I have seen and I testify that this is God’s Chosen One.”
35	The next day John was standing, with two of his disciples;	The next day again John was standing with two of his disciples,	The next day John was there again with two of his disciples.
36	And he looked at Jesus while he walked, and said, Behold, the Lamb of God!	and he looked at Jesus as he walked by and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God!”	When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, “Look, the Lamb of God!”
37	And when he said it, two of his disciples heard it; and they went after Jesus.	The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus.	When the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus.
38	And Jesus turned around and saw them following him, and he said to them, What do you want? They said to him, Rabbi (Teacher), where do you live?	Jesus turned and saw them following and said to them, “What are you seeking?” And they said to him, “Rabbi” (which means Teacher), “where are you staying?”	Turning around, Jesus saw them following and asked, “What do you want?” They said, “Rabbi” (which means “Teacher”), “where are you staying?”
39	He said to them, Come, and you will see. And they came and saw where he stayed, and they remained with him that day; and it was about the tenth hour.	He said to them, “Come and you will see.” So they came and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day, for it was about the tenth hour.	“Come,” he replied, “and you will see.” So they went and saw where he was staying, and they spent that day with him. It was about four in the afternoon.
40	One of them who heard John and followed Jesus, was Andrew, the brother of Simon.	One of the two who heard John speak and followed Jesus was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother.	Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus.
41	He saw his brother Simon first, and said to him, We have found the Christ.	He first found his own brother Simon and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which means Christ).	The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, “We have found the Messiah” (that is, the Christ).
42	And he brought him to Jesus. And Jesus looked at him and said, You are Simon the son of Jonah; you are called Kepa (a Stone).	He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon the son of John. You shall be called Cephas” (which means Peter).	And he brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas” (which, when translated, is Peter).
43	The next day Jesus wanted to leave for Galilee, and he found Philip, and said to him, Follow me.	The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, “Follow me.”	The next day Jesus decided to leave for Galilee. Finding Philip, he said to him, “Follow me.”
44	Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Simon.	Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter.	Philip, like Andrew and Peter, was from the town of Bethsaida.
45	Philip found Nathanael, and said to him, We have found that Jesus, the son of Joseph, of Nazareth, is the one concerning whom Moses wrote in the law and the prophets.	Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found him of whom Moses in the Law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.”	Philip found Nathanael and told him, “We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote—Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.”
46	Nathanael said to him, Can anything good come out of Nazareth? Philip said to him, Come and you will see.	Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.”	“Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?” Nathanael asked. “Come and see,” said Philip.
47	Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him and he said of him, Behold truly an Israelite, in whom there is no guile!	Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said of him, “Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom there is no deceit!”	When Jesus saw Nathanael approaching, he said of him, “Here truly is an Israelite in whom there is no deceit.”
48	Nathanael said to him, Whence do you know me? Jesus said to him. Even before Philip called you, while you were under the fig tree, I saw you.	Nathanael said to him, “How do you know me?” Jesus answered him, “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.”	“How do you know me?” Nathanael asked. Jesus answered, “I saw you while you were still under the fig tree before Philip called you.”
49	Nathanael answered, saying to him, Rabbi, you are the Son of God, you are the King of Israel.	Nathanael answered him, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!”	Then Nathanael declared, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the king of Israel.”
50	Jesus said to him, Do you believe because I told you I saw you under the fig tree? you shall see greater things than these.	Jesus answered him, “Because I said to you, ‘I saw you under the fig tree,’ do you believe? You will see greater things than these.”	Jesus said, “You believe because I told you I saw you under the fig tree. You will see greater things than that.”
51	He said to him, Truly, truly, I say to all of you, that from now on you will see the heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending to the Son of man.	And he said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”	He then added, “Very truly I tell you, you will see ‘heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending on’ the Son of Man.”
