1 In the beginning, the Word existed. The Word was with God, and the Word was God. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

4 In him was life, and that life brought light to humanity. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind.

12 However, to all who received him, those believing in his name, he gave authority to become God's children, But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God—
13 who were born, not merely in a genetic sense, nor from lust, nor from man's desire, but from the will of God. who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God. children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.
14 The Word became flesh and lived among us. We gazed on his glory, the kind of glory that belongs to the Father's unique Son, who is full of grace and truth. And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. 15 John told the truth about him when he cried out, |This is the person about whom I said, 'The one who comes after me ranks higher than me, because he existed before me.'| (John bore witness about him, and cried out, “This was he of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me ranks before me, because he was before me.’”) (John testified concerning him. He cried out, saying, “This is the one I spoke about when I said, ‘He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’”)
16 We have all received one gracious gift after another from his abundance, For from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. Out of his fullness we have all received grace in place of grace already given.
17 because while the Law was given through Moses, grace and truth came through Jesus the Messiah. For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
18 No one has ever seen God. The unique God, who is close to the Father's side, has revealed him. No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father’s side, he has made him known. 19 This was John's testimony when the Jewish leaders sent priests and descendants of Levi to him from Jerusalem to ask him, |Who are you?| And this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?” Now this was John’s testimony when the Jewish leaders in Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him who he was.
20 He spoke openly and, remaining true to himself, admitted, |I am not the Messiah.| He confessed, and did not deny, but confessed, “I am not the Christ.” He did not fail to confess, but confessed freely, “I am not the Messiah.”
21 So they asked him, |Well then, are you Elijah?| John said, |I am not.| |Are you the Prophet?| He answered, |No.| And they asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” And he answered, “No.” They asked him, “Then who are you? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” He answered, “No.”
22 |Who are you?| they asked him. |We must give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?| So they said to him, “Who are you? We need to give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?” Finally they said, “Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?”
23 He replied, |I am '...a voice crying out in the wilderness, |Prepare the Lord's highway,|' as the prophet Isaiah said.| He said, “I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord,’ as the prophet Isaiah said.” John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet, “I am the voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way for the Lord.’”
24 Now those men had been sent from the Pharisees. (Now they had been sent from the Pharisees.) Now the Pharisees who had been sent
25 They asked him, |Why, then, are you baptizing if you are not the Messiah, or Elijah, or the Prophet?| They asked him, “Then why are you baptizing, if you are neither the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?” questioned him, “Why then do you baptize if you are not the Messiah, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?”
26 John answered them, |I am baptizing with water, but among you stands a man whom you do not know, John answered them, “I baptize with water, but among you stands one you do not know, “I baptize with water,” John replied, “but among you stands one you do not know.
27 the one who is coming after me, whose sandal straps I am not worthy to untie.| even he who comes after me, the strap of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie.” He is the one who comes after me, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie.”

32 John also testified, |I saw the Spirit coming down from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him. And John bore witness: “I saw the Spirit descend from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him. Then John gave this testimony: “I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him.
33 I didn't recognize him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, 'The person on whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.' I myself did not know him, but he who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, this is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’ And I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, ‘The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’
34 I have seen this and have testified that this is the Son of God.| And I have seen and have borne witness that this is the Son of God.” I have seen and I testify that this is God’s Chosen One.”
35 The next day, John was standing there again with two of his disciples. The next day again John was standing with two of his disciples, The next day John was there again with two of his disciples.
36 As he watched Jesus walk by, he said, |Look, the Lamb of God!| and he looked at Jesus as he walked by and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God!” When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, “Look, the Lamb of God!”

He said to them, “Come and you will see.” So they came and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day, for it was about the tenth hour. “Come,” he replied, “and you will see.” So they went and saw where he was staying, and they spent that day with him. 40 Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, was one of the two who heard John and followed Jesus. One of the two who heard John speak and followed Jesus was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus.
41 The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and say to him, |We have found the Anointed One!| (which is translated |Messiah|). He first found his own brother Simon and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which means Christ). 45 Philip found Nathaniel and told him, |We have found the man about whom Moses in the Law and the Prophets wrote—Jesus, the son of Joseph, from Nazareth.| Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found him of whom Moses in the Law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.” Philip found Nathanael and told him, “We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote—Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.”
46 Nathaniel asked him, |From Nazareth? Can anything good come from there?| Philip told him, |Come and see!| Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.” “Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?” Nathanael asked. “Come and see,” said Philip.
47 Jesus saw Nathaniel coming toward him and said about him, |Look, a genuine Israeli, in whom there is no deceit!| Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said of him, “Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom there is no deceit!” When Jesus saw Nathanael approaching, he said of him, “Here truly is an Israelite in whom there is no deceit.”
48 Nathaniel asked him, |How do you know me?| Jesus answered him, |Before Philip called you, while you were under the fig tree, I saw you.| Nathanael said to him, “How do you know me?” Jesus answered him, “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.” “How do you know me?” Nathanael asked. Jesus answered, “I saw you while you were still under the fig tree before Philip called you.”
49 Nathaniel replied to him, |Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!| Nathanael answered him, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!” Then Nathanael declared, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the king of Israel.”
50 Jesus told him, |Do you believe because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than that.| Jesus answered him, “Because I said to you, ‘I saw you under the fig tree,’ do you believe? You will see greater things than these.” Jesus said, “You believe because I told you I saw you under the fig tree. You will see greater things than that.”
51 Then he told him, |Truly, I tell all of you emphatically, you will see heaven standing open and the angels of God going up and coming down to the Son of Man.| And he said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.” He then added, “Very truly I tell you, you will see ‘heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending on’ the Son of Man.”
