1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
2 The same was in the beginning with God. He was in the beginning with God. He was with God in the beginning.
3 All things were made by Him, and without Him nothing was made, that has been made. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.
4 In Him was life, and the life was the light of the men. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind.
5 And the light shineth in the darkness, and the darkness comprehended it not. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
6 There was a man having been sent from God, whose name was John; There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. There was a man sent from God whose name was John.
7 The same came for a witness, that he might bear witness concerning the light, in order that all through him might believe. He came as a witness, to bear witness about the light, that all might believe through him. He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all might believe.
8 He was not the light, but came that he might bear witness concerning the light. He was not the light, but came to bear witness about the light. He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.
9 That was the true light, which lighteth every man, coming into the world. The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world. The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world.
10 He was in the world, and the world was made by Him, and the world knew Him not. He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him. He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him.
11 He came unto His own, and His own received Him not. He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him. He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him.
12 But so many as received Him, to them gave He the right to become the children of God, to those believing on His name: But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God—
13 who were born not of bloods, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God. children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.
14 The Word was made flesh, and tented among us (and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten with the Father), full of grace and truth. And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.
15 John beareth witness concerning Him, and cried out saying; This is He of whom I spoke, He that cometh after me has been before me: (John bore witness about him, and cried out, “This was he of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me ranks before me, because he was before me.’”) (John testified concerning him. He cried out, saying, “This is the one I spoke about when I said, ‘He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’”)
16 because He was my Creator. And of His fullness we all received grace upon grace. For from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. Out of his fullness we have all received grace in place of grace already given.
17 Because the law was given by Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
18 No one has ever seen God; the only begotten Son, the one being in the bosom of the Father, He hath declared him. No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father’s side, he has made him known. No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is himself God and is in closest relationship with the Father, has made him known.
19 This is the testimony of John when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem, that they might ask him, And this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?” Now this was John’s testimony when the Jewish leaders in Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him who he was.
20 Who art thou? and he confessed and denied not, and confessed that, I am not the Christ. He confessed, and did not deny, but confessed, “I am not the Christ.” He did not fail to confess, but confessed freely, “I am not the Messiah.”
21 They asked him, What then? Art thou Elijah? And he says, I am not. Art thou that prophet? And they asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” And he answered, “No.” They asked him, “Then who are you? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” He answered, “No.”
22 And he responded, No. Then they said to him, Who art thou? that we may give an answer to those having sent us. What do you say concerning yourself? So they said to him, “Who are you? We need to give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?” Finally they said, “Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?”
23 I am the voice of one roaring in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord as Isaiah the prophet said. He said, “I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord,’ as the prophet Isaiah said.” John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet, “I am the voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way for the Lord.’”
24 And those having been sent were of the Pharisees. (Now they had been sent from the Pharisees.) Now the Pharisees who had been sent
25 And they asked him, and said to him, Then why do you baptize, if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor that prophet? They asked him, “Then why are you baptizing, if you are neither the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?” questioned him, “Why then do you baptize if you are not the Messiah, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?”
26 John responded to them, saying, I baptize with water: There standeth One in your midst whom you do not know, John answered them, “I baptize with water, but among you stands one you do not know, “I baptize with water,” John replied, “but among you stands one you do not know.
27 the One coming after me, of whom I am not worthy that I may loose the latchet of His sandal. even he who comes after me, the strap of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie.” He is the one who comes after me, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie.”
28 These things took place in Bethany beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing. These things took place in Bethany across the Jordan, where John was baptizing. This all happened at Bethany on the other side of the Jordan, where John was baptizing.
29 On the following day he sees Jesus coming to him, and says, Behold the Lamb of God, that taketh away the sin of the world. The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!
30 This is He concerning whom I spoke, A man cometh after me who has been before me: because he was my Creator. This is he of whom I said, ‘After me comes a man who ranks before me, because he was before me.’ This is the one I meant when I said, ‘A man who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’
31 And I did not know Him, but in order that He may be made manifest to Israel, on this account I came baptizing with water. I myself did not know him, but for this purpose I came baptizing with water, that he might be revealed to Israel.” I myself did not know him, but the reason I came baptizing with water was that he might be revealed to Israel.”
32 And John testified saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and remained on Him. And John bore witness: “I saw the Spirit descend from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him. Then John gave this testimony: “I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him.
33 And I did not know Him, but the One having sent me to baptize with water, He said to me, On whom you may see the Spirit descending and remaining on Him, He is the one baptizing with the Holy Ghost. I myself did not know him, but he who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, this is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’ And I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, ‘The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’
34 And I have seen, and testified that He is the Son of God. And I have seen and have borne witness that this is the Son of God.” I have seen and I testify that this is God’s Chosen One.”
35 On the following day John again stood, and two of his disciples, The next day again John was standing with two of his disciples, The next day John was there again with two of his disciples.
36 and looking upon Jesus walking about, says, Behold, the Lamb of God. and he looked at Jesus as he walked by and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God!” When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, “Look, the Lamb of God!”
37 And the two disciples heard him speaking and followed Jesus. The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus. When the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus.
38 Jesus turning and seeing them following, says to them, What are you seeking? and they said to Him, Doctor, (which is said, being interpreted, Teacher), where dwellest thou? Jesus turned and saw them following and said to them, “What are you seeking?” And they said to him, “Rabbi” (which means Teacher), “where are you staying?” Turning around, Jesus saw them following and asked, “What do you want?” They said, “Rabbi” (which means “Teacher”), “where are you staying?”
39 He says to them; Come and see. Then they came and saw where He dwelleth, and they abode with Him that day: it was about the tenth hour. He said to them, “Come and you will see.” So they came and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day, for it was about the tenth hour. “Come,” he replied, “and you will see.” So they went and saw where he was staying, and they spent that day with him. It was about four in the afternoon.
40 Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, was one of the two hearing from John, and follows Him; One of the two who heard John speak and followed Jesus was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus.
41 he first finds his own brother Simon, and says to him, We have found Messiah, which is being interpreted, Christ. He first found his own brother Simon and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which means Christ). The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, “We have found the Messiah” (that is, the Christ).
42 He led him to Jesus. Jesus looking upon him said; Thou art Simon the Son of Jonah, thou shalt be called Cephas (which is interpreted, Peter). He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon the son of John. You shall be called Cephas” (which means Peter). And he brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas” (which, when translated, is Peter).
43 On the following day he wished to depart into Galilee, and he finds Philip. And Jesus says to him; Follow me. The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, “Follow me.” The next day Jesus decided to leave for Galilee. Finding Philip, he said to him, “Follow me.”
44 Philip was from Bethsaida, of the city of Andrew and Peter. Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. Philip, like Andrew and Peter, was from the town of Bethsaida.
45 Philip finds Nathanael and says to him, We have found Him, of whom Moses and the prophets, in the law, did write, Jesus the son of Joseph, who is from Nazareth. Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found him of whom Moses in the Law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.” Philip found Nathanael and told him, “We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote—Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.”
46 Nathanael said to him, Is any good thing able to come out of Nazareth? Philip says to him, Come and see. Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.” “Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?” Nathanael asked. “Come and see,” said Philip.
47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming to Him, and says concerning him, Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom there is no guile. Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said of him, “Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom there is no deceit!” When Jesus saw Nathanael approaching, he said of him, “Here truly is an Israelite in whom there is no deceit.”
48 Nathanael says to Him, Whence do you know me? Jesus responded and said to him, Before Philip called you, I saw you, being under the fig-tree. Nathanael said to him, “How do you know me?” Jesus answered him, “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.” “How do you know me?” Nathanael asked. Jesus answered, “I saw you while you were still under the fig tree before Philip called you.”
49 Nathanael responded, Rabbi, thou art the Son of God, the King of Israel. Nathanael answered him, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!” Then Nathanael declared, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the king of Israel.”
50 Jesus responded and said to him, Because I said to thee, that I saw thee under the fig-tree, dost thou believe? thou shalt see greater things than these. Jesus answered him, “Because I said to you, ‘I saw you under the fig tree,’ do you believe? You will see greater things than these.” Jesus said, “You believe because I told you I saw you under the fig tree. You will see greater things than that.”
51 And He says to him, Truly, truly, I say unto you, you shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man. And he said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.” He then added, “Very truly I tell you, you will see ‘heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending on’ the Son of Man.”
