1	In the beginning [before all time] was the Word (Christ), and the Word was with God, and the Word was God Himself.	In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.	In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
2	He was [continually existing] in the beginning [co-eternally] with God.	He was in the beginning with God.	He was with God in the beginning.
3	All things were made and came into existence through Him; and without Him not even one thing was made that has come into being.	All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made.	Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.
4	In Him was life [and the power to bestow life], and the life was the Light of men.	In him was life, and the life was the light of men.	In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind.
5	The Light shines on in the darkness, and the darkness did not understand it or overpower it or appropriate it or absorb it [and is unreceptive to it].	The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.	The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
6	There came a man commissioned and sent from God, whose name was John.	There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.	There was a man sent from God whose name was John.

8	John was not the Light, but came to testify about the Light.	He was not the light, but came to bear witness about the light.	He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.
9	There it was—the true Light [the genuine, perfect, steadfast Light] which, coming into the world, enlightens everyone.	The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world.	The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world.
10	He (Christ) was in the world, and though the world was made through Him, the world did not recognize Him.	He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him.	He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him.
11	He came to that which was His own [that which belonged to Him—His world, His creation, His possession], and those who were His own [people—the Jewish nation] did not receive and welcome Him. 12	But to as many as did receive and welcome Him, He gave the right [the authority, the privilege] to become children of God, that is, to those who believe in (adhere to, trust in, and rely on) His name—	But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God,	Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God—
13	who were born, not of blood [natural conception], nor of the will of the flesh [physical impulse], nor of the will of man [that of a natural father], but of God [that is, a divine and supernatural birth—they are born of God—spiritually transformed, renewed, sanctified].	who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.	children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.
14	And the Word (Christ) became flesh, and lived among us; and we [actually] saw His glory, glory as belongs to the [One and] only begotten Son of the Father, [the Son who is truly unique, the only One of His kind, who is] full of grace and truth (absolutely free of deception).	And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.	The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.
15	John testified [repeatedly] about Him and has cried out [testifying officially for the record, with validity and relevance], “This was He of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me has a higher rank than I and has priority over me, for He existed before me.’”	(John bore witness about him, and cried out, “This was he of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me ranks before me, because he was before me.’”)	(John testified concerning him. He cried out, saying, “This is the one I spoke about when I said, ‘He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’”)
16	For out of His fullness [the superabundance of His grace and truth] we have all received grace upon grace [spiritual blessing upon spiritual blessing, favor upon favor, and gift heaped upon gift].	For from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace.	Out of his fullness we have all received grace in place of grace already given.
17	For the Law was given through Moses, but grace [the unearned, undeserved favor of God] and truth came through Jesus Christ.	For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.	For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
18	No one has seen God [His essence, His divine nature] at any time; the [One and] only begotten God [that is, the unique Son] who is in the intimate presence of the Father, He has explained Him [and interpreted and revealed the awesome wonder of the Father].	No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father’s side, he has made him known.	No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is himself God and is in closest relationship with the Father, has made him known.
19	This is the testimony of John [the Baptist] when the Jews sent priests and Levites to him from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?”	And this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?”	Now this was John’s testimony when the Jewish leaders in Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him who he was.
20	And he confessed [truthfully] and did not deny [that he was only a man], but acknowledged, “I am not the Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed)!”	He confessed, and did not deny, but confessed, “I am not the Christ.”	He did not fail to confess, but confessed freely, “I am not the Messiah.”
21	They asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?” And he said, “I am not.” “Are you the [promised] Prophet?” And he answered, “No.”	And they asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” And he answered, “No.”	They asked him, “Then who are you? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” He answered, “No.”
22	Then they said to him, “Who are you? Tell us, so that we may give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?”	So they said to him, “Who are you? We need to give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?”	Finally they said, “Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?”
23	He said, “I am THE VOICE OF ONE SHOUTING IN THE WILDERNESS, ‘MAKE STRAIGHT THE WAY OF THE LORD,’ as the prophet Isaiah said.”	He said, “I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord,’ as the prophet Isaiah said.”	John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet, “I am the voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way for the Lord.’”
24	Now they had been sent from the Pharisees.	(Now they had been sent from the Pharisees.)	Now the Pharisees who had been sent
25	They asked him, “Why then are you baptizing, if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?”	They asked him, “Then why are you baptizing, if you are neither the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?”	questioned him, “Why then do you baptize if you are not the Messiah, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?”
26	John answered them, “I baptize [only] in water, but among you there stands One whom you do not recognize and of whom you know nothing.	John answered them, “I baptize with water, but among you stands one you do not know,	“I baptize with water,” John replied, “but among you stands one you do not know.
27	It is He [the preeminent One] who comes after me, the strap of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie [even as His slave].”	even he who comes after me, the strap of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie.”	He is the one who comes after me, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie.”
28	These things occurred in Bethany across the Jordan [at the Jordan River crossing], where John was baptizing.	These things took place in Bethany across the Jordan, where John was baptizing.	This all happened at Bethany on the other side of the Jordan, where John was baptizing.
29	The next day he saw Jesus coming to him and said, “Look! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!	The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!	The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!
30	This is He on behalf of whom I said, ‘After me comes a Man who has a higher rank than I and has priority over me, for He existed before me.’	This is he of whom I said, ‘After me comes a man who ranks before me, because he was before me.’	This is the one I meant when I said, ‘A man who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’
31	I did not recognize Him [as the Messiah]; but I came baptizing in water so that He would be [publicly] revealed to Israel.”	I myself did not know him, but for this purpose I came baptizing with water, that he might be revealed to Israel.”	I myself did not know him, but the reason I came baptizing with water was that he might be revealed to Israel.”
32	John gave [further] evidence [testifying officially for the record, with validity and relevance], saying, “I have seen the Spirit descending as a dove out of heaven, and He remained upon Him.	And John bore witness: “I saw the Spirit descend from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him.	Then John gave this testimony: “I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him.
33	I did not recognize Him [as the Messiah], but He who sent me to baptize in water said to me, ‘He upon whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, this One is He who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’	I myself did not know him, but he who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, this is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’	And I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, ‘The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’
34	I myself have [actually] seen [that happen], and my testimony is that this is the Son of God!”	And I have seen and have borne witness that this is the Son of God.”	I have seen and I testify that this is God’s Chosen One.”
35	Again the next day John was standing with two of his disciples,	The next day again John was standing with two of his disciples,	The next day John was there again with two of his disciples.
36	and he looked at Jesus as He walked along, and said, “Look! The Lamb of God!”	and he looked at Jesus as he walked by and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God!”	When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, “Look, the Lamb of God!”
37	The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus.	The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus.	When the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus.
38	And Jesus turned and saw them following Him, and asked them, “What do you want?” They answered Him, “Rabbi (which translated means Teacher), where are You staying?”	Jesus turned and saw them following and said to them, “What are you seeking?” And they said to him, “Rabbi” (which means Teacher), “where are you staying?”	Turning around, Jesus saw them following and asked, “What do you want?” They said, “Rabbi” (which means “Teacher”), “where are you staying?”
39	He said to them, “Come, and you will see.” So they went [with Him] and saw where He was staying; and they stayed with Him that day, for it was about the tenth hour.	He said to them, “Come and you will see.” So they came and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day, for it was about the tenth hour.	“Come,” he replied, “and you will see.” So they went and saw where he was staying, and they spent that day with him. It was about four in the afternoon.
40	One of the two who heard what John said and [as a result] followed Jesus was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother.	One of the two who heard John speak and followed Jesus was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother.	Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus.
41	He first looked for and found his own brother Simon and told him, “We have found the Messiah” (which translated means the Christ).	He first found his own brother Simon and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which means Christ).	The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, “We have found the Messiah” (that is, the Christ).
42	Andrew brought Simon to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon the son of John. You shall be called Cephas (which is translated Peter).”	He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon the son of John. You shall be called Cephas” (which means Peter).	And he brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas” (which, when translated, is Peter).
43	The next day Jesus decided to go into Galilee, and He found Philip and said to him, “Follow Me [as My disciple, accepting Me as your Master and Teacher, and walking the same path of life that I walk].”	The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, “Follow me.”	The next day Jesus decided to leave for Galilee. Finding Philip, he said to him, “Follow me.”
44	Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter.	Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter.	Philip, like Andrew and Peter, was from the town of Bethsaida.
45	Philip found Nathanael and told him, “We have found the One Moses in the Law and also the Prophets wrote about—Jesus from Nazareth, the son of Joseph [according to public record].”	Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found him of whom Moses in the Law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.”	Philip found Nathanael and told him, “We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote—Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.”
46	Nathanael answered him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip replied, “Come and see.”	Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.”	“Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?” Nathanael asked. “Come and see,” said Philip.
47	Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward Him, and said of him, “Here is an Israelite indeed [a true descendant of Jacob], in whom there is no guile nor deceit nor duplicity!”	Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said of him, “Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom there is no deceit!”	When Jesus saw Nathanael approaching, he said of him, “Here truly is an Israelite in whom there is no deceit.”
48	Nathanael said to Jesus, “How do You know [these things about] me?” Jesus answered, “Before Philip called you, when you were still under the fig tree, I saw you.”	Nathanael said to him, “How do you know me?” Jesus answered him, “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.”	“How do you know me?” Nathanael asked. Jesus answered, “I saw you while you were still under the fig tree before Philip called you.”
49	Nathanael answered, “Rabbi (Teacher), You are the Son of God; You are the King of Israel.”	Nathanael answered him, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!”	Then Nathanael declared, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the king of Israel.”
50	Jesus replied, “Because I said to you that I saw you under the fig tree, do you believe [in Me]? You will see greater things than this.”	Jesus answered him, “Because I said to you, ‘I saw you under the fig tree,’ do you believe? You will see greater things than these.”	Jesus said, “You believe because I told you I saw you under the fig tree. You will see greater things than that.”
51	Then He said to him, “I assure you and most solemnly say to you, you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man [the bridge between heaven and earth].”	And he said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”	He then added, “Very truly I tell you, you will see ‘heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending on’ the Son of Man.”
