1 “Call out if you please, but who will answer? To which of the holy ones will you turn? “Call now; is there anyone who will answer you? To which of the holy ones will you turn? 2 For resentment kills a fool, and envy slays the simple. Surely vexation kills the fool, and jealousy slays the simple. For wrath killeth the foolish man, and envy slayeth the silly one. “For irritation kills the fool, And jealousy brings death to the simple. Resentment kills a fool, and envy slays the simple.
3 I have seen a fool taking root, but suddenly his house was cursed. I have seen the fool taking root, but suddenly I cursed his dwelling. I have seen the foolish taking root: but suddenly I cursed his habitation. “I have seen the fool taking root, And I cursed his home immediately. I myself have seen a fool taking root, but suddenly his house was cursed.
4 His sons are far from safety, crushed in court without a defender. His children are far from safety; they are crushed in the gate, and there is no one to deliver them. 5 The hungry consume his harvest, taking it even from the thorns, and the thirsty pant after his wealth. Whose harvest the hungry eateth up, and taketh it even out of the thorns, and the robber swalloweth up their substance. “The hungry devour his harvest And take it to a <i>place of</i> thorns, And the schemer is eager for their wealth. 6 For distress does not spring from the dust, and trouble does not sprout from the ground. For affliction does not come from the dust, nor does trouble sprout from the ground, Although affliction cometh not forth of the dust, neither doth trouble spring out of the ground; “For disaster does not come from the dust, Nor does trouble sprout from the ground, For hardship does not spring from the soil, nor does trouble sprout from the ground.
7 Yet man is born to trouble as surely as sparks fly upward. but man is born to trouble as the sparks fly upward. Yet man is born unto trouble, as the sparks fly upward. For man is born for trouble, As sparks fly upward. Yet man is born to trouble as surely as sparks fly upward.
8 However, if I were you, I would appeal to God and lay my cause before Him— “As for me, I would seek God, and to God would I commit my cause, I would seek unto God, and unto God would I commit my cause: “But as for me, I would seek God, And I would make my plea before God, “But if I were you, I would appeal to God; I would lay my cause before him.
9 the One who does great and unsearchable things, wonders without number. who does great things and unsearchable, marvelous things without number: Which doeth great things and unsearchable; marvellous things without number: Who does great and unsearchable things, Wonders without number. He performs wonders that cannot be fathomed, miracles that cannot be counted.
10 He gives rain to the earth and sends water upon the fields. he gives rain on the earth and sends waters on the fields; Who giveth rain upon the earth, and sendeth waters upon the fields: “He gives rain on the earth, And sends water on the fields, He provides rain for the earth; he sends water on the countryside.
11 He sets the lowly on high, so that mourners are lifted to safety. he sets on high those who are lowly, and those who mourn are lifted to safety. To set up on high those that be low; that those which mourn may be exalted to safety. So that He sets on high those who are lowly, And those who mourn are lifted to safety. The lowly he sets on high, and those who mourn are lifted to safety.
12 He thwarts the schemes of the crafty, so that their hands find no success. He frustrates the devices of the crafty, so that their hands achieve no success. Behold, happy <i>is</i> the man whom God correcteth: therefore despise not thou the chastening of the Almighty: “Behold, happy is the person whom God disciplines, So do not reject the discipline of the Almighty. “Blessed is the one whom God corrects; so do not despise the discipline of the Almighty.
18 For He wounds, but He also binds; He strikes, but His hands also heal. For he wounds, but he binds up; he shatters, but his hands heal. For he maketh sore, and bindeth up: he woundeth, and his hands make whole. “For He inflicts pain, and gives relief; He wounds, but His hands <i>also</i> heal. For he wounds, but he also binds up; he injures, but his hands also heal.
19 He will rescue you from six calamities; no harm will touch you in seven. He will deliver you from six troubles; in seven no evil shall touch you. He shall deliver thee in six troubles: yea, in seven there shall no evil touch thee. “In six troubles He will save you; Even in seven, evil will not touch you. From six calamities he will rescue you; in seven no harm will touch you.
20 In famine He will redeem you from death, and in battle from the stroke of the sword. In famine he will redeem you from death, and in war from the power of the sword. 21 You will be hidden from the scourge of the tongue, and will not fear havoc when it comes. You shall be hidden from the lash of the tongue, and shall not fear destruction when it comes. Thou shalt be hid from the scourge of the tongue: neither shalt thou be afraid of destruction when it cometh. “You will be hidden from the scourge of the tongue, And you will not be afraid of violence when it comes. You will be protected from the lash of the tongue, and need not fear when destruction comes.
22 You will laugh at destruction and famine, and need not fear the beasts of the earth. At destruction and famine you shall laugh, and shall not fear the beasts of the earth. At destruction and famine thou shalt laugh: neither shalt thou be afraid of the beasts of the earth. “You will laugh at violence and hunger, And you will not be afraid of wild animals. You will laugh at destruction and famine, and need not fear the wild animals.
23 For you will have a covenant with the stones of the field, and the wild animals will be at peace with you. For you shall be in league with the stones of the field, and the beasts of the field shall be at peace with you. For thou shalt be in league with the stones of the field: and the beasts of the field shall be at peace with thee. “For you will be in league with the stones of the field, And the animals of the field will be at peace with you. For you will have a covenant with the stones of the field, and the wild animals will be at peace with you.
24 You will know that your tent is secure, and find nothing amiss when inspecting your home. You shall know that your tent is at peace, and you shall inspect your fold and miss nothing. And thou shalt know that thy tabernacle <i>shall be</i> in peace; and thou shalt visit thy habitation, and shalt not sin. “You will know that your tent is secure, For you will visit your home and have nothing missing. You will know that your tent is secure; you will take stock of your property and find nothing missing.
25 You will know that your offspring will be many, your descendants like the grass of the earth. You shall know also that your offspring shall be many, and your descendants as the grass of the earth. Thou shalt know also that thy seed <i>shall be</i> great, and thine offspring as the grass of the earth. “You will also know that your descendants will be many, And your offspring as the grass of the earth. You will know that your children will be many, and your descendants like the grass of the earth.
26 You will come to the grave in full vigor, like a sheaf of grain gathered in season. You shall come to your grave in ripe old age, like a sheaf gathered up in its season. Thou shalt come to <i>thy</i> grave in a full age, like as a shock of corn cometh in in his season. “You will come to the grave at a ripe age, Like the stacking of grain in its season. You will come to the grave in full vigor, like sheaves gathered in season.
27 Indeed, we have investigated, and it is true! So hear it and know for yourself.” Behold, this we have searched out; it is true. Hear, and know it for your good.” Lo this, we have searched it, so it <i>is</i>; hear it, and know thou <i>it</i> for thy good. “Behold this; we have investigated it, <i>and</i> so it is. Hear it, and know for yourself.” “We have examined this, and it is true. So hear it and apply it to yourself.”
