| 1 | וַיֹּ֣סֶף אִ֭יּוֹב שְׂאֵ֥ת מְשָׁל֗וֹ וַיֹּאמַֽר׃ | And Job again took up his discourse, and said: | And Job continued his discourse: | |
| 2 | חַי־ אֵ֭ל הֵסִ֣יר מִשְׁפָּטִ֑י וְ֝שַׁדַּ֗י הֵמַ֥ר נַפְשִֽׁי׃ | “As God lives, who has taken away my right, and the Almighty, who has made my soul bitter, | “As surely as God lives, who has denied me justice, the Almighty, who has made my life bitter, | |
| 3 | כִּֽי־ כָל־ ע֣וֹד נִשְׁמָתִ֣י בִ֑י וְר֖וּחַ אֱל֣וֹהַּ בְּאַפִּֽי׃ | as long as my breath is in me, and the spirit of God is in my nostrils, | as long as I have life within me, the breath of God in my nostrils, | |
| 4 | אִם־ תְּדַבֵּ֣רְנָה שְׂפָתַ֣י עַוְלָ֑ה וּ֝לְשׁוֹנִ֗י אִם־ יֶהְגֶּ֥ה רְמִיָּֽה׃ | my lips will not speak falsehood, and my tongue will not utter deceit. | my lips will not say anything wicked, and my tongue will not utter lies. | |
| 5 | חָלִ֣ילָה לִּי֮ אִם־ אַצְדִּ֪יק אֶ֫תְכֶ֥ם עַד־ אֶגְוָ֑ע לֹא־ אָסִ֖יר תֻּמָּתִ֣י מִמֶּֽנִּי׃ | Far be it from me to say that you are right; till I die I will not put away my integrity from me. | I will never admit you are in the right; till I die, I will not deny my integrity. | |
| 6 | בְּצִדְקָתִ֣י הֶ֭חֱזַקְתִּי וְלֹ֣א אַרְפֶּ֑הָ לֹֽא־ יֶחֱרַ֥ף לְ֝בָבִ֗י מִיָּמָֽי׃ | I hold fast my righteousness and will not let it go; my heart does not reproach me for any of my days. | I will maintain my innocence and never let go of it; my conscience will not reproach me as long as I live. | |
| 7 | יְהִ֣י כְ֭רָשָׁע אֹ֣יְבִ֑י וּמִתְקוֹמְמִ֥י כְעַוָּֽל׃ | “Let my enemy be as the wicked, and let him who rises up against me be as the unrighteous. | “May my enemy be like the wicked, my adversary like the unjust! | |
| 8 | כִּ֤י מַה־ תִּקְוַ֣ת חָ֭נֵף כִּ֣י יִבְצָ֑ע כִּ֤י יֵ֖שֶׁל אֱל֣וֹהַּ נַפְשֽׁוֹ׃ | For what is the hope of the godless when God cuts him off, when God takes away his life? | For what hope have the godless when they are cut off, when God takes away their life? | |
| 9 | הַֽ֭צַעֲקָתוֹ יִשְׁמַ֥ע ׀ אֵ֑ל כִּֽי־ תָב֖וֹא עָלָ֣יו צָרָֽה׃ | Will God hear his cry when distress comes upon him? | Does God listen to their cry when distress comes upon them? | |
| 10 | אִם־ עַל־ שַׁדַּ֥י יִתְעַנָּ֑ג יִקְרָ֖א אֱל֣וֹהַּ בְּכָל־ עֵֽת׃ | Will he take delight in the Almighty? Will he call upon God at all times? | Will they find delight in the Almighty? Will they call on God at all times? | |
| 11 | אוֹרֶ֣ה אֶתְכֶ֣ם בְּיַד־ אֵ֑ל אֲשֶׁ֥ר עִם־ שַׁ֝דַּ֗י לֹ֣א אֲכַחֵֽד׃ | I will teach you concerning the hand of God; what is with the Almighty I will not conceal. | “I will teach you about the power of God; the ways of the Almighty I will not conceal. | |
| 12 | הֵן־ אַתֶּ֣ם כֻּלְּכֶ֣ם חֲזִיתֶ֑ם וְלָמָּה־ זֶּ֝֗ה הֶ֣בֶל תֶּהְבָּֽלוּ׃ | Behold, all of you have seen it yourselves; why then have you become altogether vain? | You have all seen this yourselves. Why then this meaningless talk? | |
| 13 | זֶ֤ה ׀ חֵֽלֶק־ אָדָ֖ם רָשָׁ֥ע ׀ עִם־ אֵ֑ל וְֽנַחֲלַ֥ת עָ֝רִיצִ֗ים מִשַּׁדַּ֥י יִקָּֽחוּ׃ | “This is the portion of a wicked man with God, and the heritage that oppressors receive from the Almighty: | “Here is the fate God allots to the wicked, the heritage a ruthless man receives from the Almighty: | |
| 14 | אִם־ יִרְבּ֣וּ בָנָ֣יו לְמוֹ־ חָ֑רֶב וְ֝צֶאֱצָאָ֗יו לֹ֣א יִשְׂבְּעוּ־ לָֽחֶם׃ | If his children are multiplied, it is for the sword, and his descendants have not enough bread. | However many his children, their fate is the sword; his offspring will never have enough to eat. | |
| 15 | [שרידו] (שְׂ֭רִידָיו) בַּמָּ֣וֶת יִקָּבֵ֑רוּ וְ֝אַלְמְנֹתָ֗יו לֹ֣א תִבְכֶּֽינָה׃ | Those who survive him the pestilence buries, and his widows do not weep. | The plague will bury those who survive him, and their widows will not weep for them. | |
| 16 | אִם־ יִצְבֹּ֣ר כֶּעָפָ֣ר כָּ֑סֶף וְ֝כַחֹ֗מֶר יָכִ֥ין מַלְבּֽוּשׁ׃ | Though he heap up silver like dust, and pile up clothing like clay, | Though he heaps up silver like dust and clothes like piles of clay, | |
| 17 | יָ֭כִין וְצַדִּ֣יק יִלְבָּ֑שׁ וְ֝כֶ֗סֶף נָקִ֥י יַחֲלֹֽק׃ | he may pile it up, but the righteous will wear it, and the innocent will divide the silver. | what he lays up the righteous will wear, and the innocent will divide his silver. | |
| 18 | בָּנָ֣ה כָעָ֣שׁ בֵּית֑וֹ וּ֝כְסֻכָּ֗ה עָשָׂ֥ה נֹצֵֽר׃ | He builds his house like a moth’s, like a booth that a watchman makes. | The house he builds is like a moth’s cocoon, like a hut made by a watchman. | |
| 19 | עָשִׁ֣יר יִ֭שְׁכַּב וְלֹ֣א יֵאָסֵ֑ף עֵינָ֖יו פָּקַ֣ח וְאֵינֶֽנּוּ׃ | He goes to bed rich, but will do so no more; he opens his eyes, and his wealth is gone. | He lies down wealthy, but will do so no more; when he opens his eyes, all is gone. | |
| 20 | תַּשִּׂיגֵ֣הוּ כַ֭מַּיִם בַּלָּה֑וֹת לַ֝֗יְלָה גְּנָבַ֥תּוּ סוּפָֽה׃ | Terrors overtake him like a flood; in the night a whirlwind carries him off. | Terrors overtake him like a flood; a tempest snatches him away in the night. | |
| 21 | יִשָּׂאֵ֣הוּ קָדִ֣ים וְיֵלַ֑ךְ וִֽ֝ישָׂעֲרֵ֗הוּ מִמְּקֹמֽוֹ׃ | The east wind lifts him up and he is gone; it sweeps him out of his place. | The east wind carries him off, and he is gone; it sweeps him out of his place. | |
| 22 | וְיַשְׁלֵ֣ךְ עָ֭לָיו וְלֹ֣א יַחְמֹ֑ל מִ֝יָּד֗וֹ בָּר֥וֹחַ יִבְרָֽח׃ | It hurls at him without pity; he flees from its power in headlong flight. | It hurls itself against him without mercy as he flees headlong from its power. | |
| 23 | יִשְׂפֹּ֣ק עָלֵ֣ימוֹ כַפֵּ֑ימוֹ וְיִשְׁרֹ֥ק עָ֝לָ֗יו מִמְּקֹמֽוֹ׃ | It claps its hands at him and hisses at him from its place. | It claps its hands in derision and hisses him out of his place.” | |
