1 Moreover the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, And the word of the LORD came to me, saying, The word of the LORD came to me:
2 And thou, son of man, wilt thou judge, wilt thou judge the bloody city? then cause her to know all her abominations. “And you, son of man, will you judge, will you judge the bloody city? Then declare to her all her abominations. “Son of man, will you judge her? Will you judge this city of bloodshed? Then confront her with all her detestable practices
3 And thou shalt say, Thus saith the Lord GOD: A city that sheddeth blood in the midst of her, that her time may come, and that maketh idols against herself to defile her! You shall say, Thus says the Lord GOD: A city that sheds blood in her midst, so that her time may come, and that makes idols to defile herself! and say: ‘This is what the Sovereign LORD says: You city that brings on herself doom by shedding blood in her midst and defiles herself by making idols,
4 Thou art become guilty in thy blood that thou hast shed, and art defiled in thine idols which thou hast made; and thou hast caused thy days to draw near, and art come even unto thy years: therefore have I made thee a reproach unto the nations, and a mocking to all the countries. You have become guilty by the blood that you have shed, and defiled by the idols that you have made, and you have brought your days near, the appointed time of your years has come. Therefore I have made you a reproach to the nations, and a mockery to all the countries. you have become guilty because of the blood you have shed and have become defiled by the idols you have made. You have brought your days to a close, and the end of your years has come. Therefore I will make you an object of scorn to the nations and a laughingstock to all the countries.
5 Those that be near, and those that be far from thee, shall mock thee, thou infamous one and full of tumult. Those who are near and those who are far from you will mock you; your name is defiled; you are full of tumult. Those who are near and those who are far away will mock you, you infamous city, full of turmoil.
6 Behold, the princes of Israel, every one according to his power, have been in thee to shed blood. “Behold, the princes of Israel in you, every one according to his power, have been bent on shedding blood. “’See how each of the princes of Israel who are in you uses his power to shed blood.
7 In thee have they set light by father and mother; in the midst of thee, have they dealt by oppression with the stranger: in thee have they wronged the fatherless and the widow. Father and mother are treated with contempt in you; the sojourner suffers extortion in your midst; the fatherless and the widow are wronged in you. In you they have treated father and mother with contempt; in you they have oppressed the foreigner and mistreated the fatherless and the widow.
8 Thou hast despised mine holy things, and hast profaned my sabbaths. You have despised my holy things and profaned my Sabbaths. You have despised my holy things and desecrated my Sabbaths.
9 Slanderous men have been in thee to shed blood: and in thee they have eaten upon the mountains: in the midst of thee they have committed lewdness. There are men in you who slander to shed blood, and people in you who eat on the mountains; they commit lewdness in your midst. In you are slanderers who are bent on shedding blood; in you are those who eat at the mountain shrines and commit lewd acts.
10 In thee have they discovered their fathers' nakedness: in thee have they humbled her that was unclean in her separation. In you men uncover their fathers’ nakedness; in you they violate women who are unclean in their menstrual impurity. In you are those who dishonor their father’s bed; in you are those who violate women during their period, when they are ceremonially unclean.
11 And one hath committed abomination with his neighbour's wife; and another hath lewdly defiled his daughter in law; and another in thee hath humbled his sister, his father's daughter. One commits abomination with his neighbor’s wife; another lewdly defiles his daughter-in-law; another in you violates his sister, his father’s daughter. In you one man commits a detestable offense with his neighbor’s wife, another shamefully defiles his daughter-in-law, and another violates his sister, his own father’s daughter.
12 In thee have they taken bribes to shed blood; thou hast taken usury and increase, and thou hast greedily gained of thy neighbours by oppression, and hast forgotten me, saith the Lord GOD. In you they take bribes to shed blood; you take interest and profit and make gain of your neighbors by extortion; but me you have forgotten, declares the Lord GOD. In you are people who accept bribes to shed blood; you take interest and make a profit from the poor. You extort unjust gain from your neighbors. And you have forgotten me, declares the Sovereign LORD.
13 Behold, therefore, I have smitten mine hand at thy dishonest gain which thou hast made, and at thy blood which hath been in the midst of thee. “Behold, I strike my hand at the dishonest gain that you have made, and at the blood that has been in your midst. “’I will surely strike my hands together at the unjust gain you have made and at the blood you have shed in your midst.
14 Can thine heart endure, or can thine hands be strong, in the days that I shall deal with thee? I the LORD have spoken it, and will do it. Can your courage endure, or can your hands be strong, in the days that I shall deal with you? I the LORD have spoken, and I will do it. Will your courage endure or your hands be strong in the day I deal with you? I the LORD have spoken, and I will do it.
15 And I will scatter thee among the nations, and disperse thee through the countries; and I will consume thy filthiness out of thee. I will scatter you among the nations and disperse you through the countries, and I will consume your uncleanness out of you. I will disperse you among the nations and scatter you through the countries; and I will put an end to your uncleanness.
16 And thou shalt be profaned in thyself, in the sight of the nations; and thou shalt know that I am the LORD. And you shall be profaned by your own doing in the sight of the nations, and you shall know that I am the LORD.” When you have been defiled in the eyes of the nations, you will know that I am the LORD.’”
17 And the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, And the word of the LORD came to me: Then the word of the LORD came to me:
18 Son of man, the house of Israel is become dross unto me: all of them are brass and tin and iron and lead, in the midst of the furnace; they are the dross of silver. “Son of man, the house of Israel has become dross to me; all of them are bronze and tin and iron and lead in the furnace; they are dross of silver. “Son of man, the people of Israel have become dross to me; all of them are the copper, tin, iron and lead left inside a furnace. They are but the dross of silver.
19 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD: Because ye are all become dross, therefore behold, I will gather you into the midst of Jerusalem. Therefore thus says the Lord GOD: Because you have all become dross, therefore, behold, I will gather you into the midst of Jerusalem. Therefore this is what the Sovereign LORD says: ‘Because you have all become dross, I will gather you into Jerusalem.
20 As they gather silver and brass and iron and lead and tin into the midst of the furnace, to blow the fire upon it, to melt it; so will I gather you in mine anger and in my fury, and I will lay you there, and melt you. As one gathers silver and bronze and iron and lead and tin into a furnace, to blow the fire on it in order to melt it, so I will gather you in my anger and in my wrath, and I will put you in and melt you. As silver, copper, iron, lead and tin are gathered into a furnace to be melted with a fiery blast, so will I gather you in my anger and my wrath and put you inside the city and melt you.
21 Yea, I will gather you, and blow upon you with the fire of my wrath, and ye shalt be melted in the midst thereof. I will gather you and blow on you with the fire of my wrath, and you shall be melted in the midst of it. I will gather you and I will blow on you with my fiery wrath, and you will be melted inside her.
22 As silver is melted in the midst of the furnace, so shall ye be melted in the midst thereof; and ye shall know that I the LORD have poured out my fury upon you. As silver is melted in a furnace, so you shall be melted in the midst of it, and you shall know that I am the LORD; I have poured out my wrath upon you.” As silver is melted in a furnace, so you will be melted inside her, and you will know that I the LORD have poured out my wrath on you.’”
23 And the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, And the word of the LORD came to me: Again the word of the LORD came to me:
24 Son of man, say unto her, thou art a land that is not cleansed, nor rained upon in the day of indignation. “Son of man, say to her, You are a land that is not cleansed or rained upon in the day of indignation. “Son of man, say to the land, ‘You are a land that has not been cleansed or rained on in the day of wrath.’
25 There is a conspiracy of her prophets in the midst thereof, like a roaring lion ravening the prey: they have devoured souls; they take treasure and precious things; they have made her widows many in the midst thereof. The conspiracy of her prophets in her midst is like a roaring lion tearing the prey; they have devoured human lives; they have taken treasure and precious things; they have made many widows in her midst. There is a conspiracy of her princes within her like a roaring lion tearing its prey; they devour people, take treasures and precious things and make many widows within her.
26 Her priests have done violence to my law, and have profaned mine holy things: they have put no difference between the holy and the common, neither have they caused men to discern between the unclean and the clean, and have hid their eyes from my sabbaths, and I am profaned among them. 27 Her princes in the midst thereof are like wolves ravening the prey; to shed blood, and to destroy souls, that they may get dishonest gain. Her princes in her midst are like wolves tearing the prey, shedding blood, destroying lives to get dishonest gain. Her officials within her are like wolves tearing their prey; they shed blood and kill people to make unjust gain.
28 And her prophets have daubed for them with untempered mortar, seeing vanity, and divining lies unto them, saying, Thus saith the Lord GOD, when the LORD hath not spoken. And her prophets have smeared whitewash for them, seeing false visions and divining lies for them, saying, ‘Thus says the Lord GOD,’ when the LORD has not spoken. Her prophets whitewash these deeds for them by false visions and lying divinations. They say, ‘This is what the Sovereign LORD says’—when the LORD has not spoken.
29 The people of the land have used oppression, and exercised robbery; yea, they have vexed the poor and needy, and have oppressed the stranger wrongfully. The people of the land have practiced extortion and committed robbery. They have oppressed the poor and needy, and have extorted from the sojourner without justice. 30 And I sought for a man among them, that should make up the fence, and stand in the gap before me for the land, that I should not destroy it: but I found none. 31 Therefore have I poured out mine indignation upon them; I have consumed them with the fire of my wrath: their own way have I brought upon their heads, saith the Lord GOD. Therefore I have poured out my indignation upon them. I have consumed them with the fire of my wrath. I have returned their way upon their heads, declares the Lord GOD.” So I will pour out my wrath on them and consume them with my fiery anger, bringing down on their own heads all they have done, declares the Sovereign LORD.”
