And YHWH says to Moses, “See, I have given you [as] a god to Pharaoh, and your brother Aaron is your prophet; | And the LORD said to Moses, “See, I have made you like God to Pharaoh, and your brother Aaron shall be your prophet. | Then the LORD said to Moses, “See, I have made you like God to Pharaoh, and your brother Aaron will be your prophet. |
you speak all that I command you, and your brother Aaron speaks to Pharaoh, and he has sent the sons of Israel out of his land. | You shall speak all that I command you, and your brother Aaron shall tell Pharaoh to let the people of Israel go out of his land. | You are to say everything I command you, and your brother Aaron is to tell Pharaoh to let the Israelites go out of his country. |
And I harden the heart of Pharaoh, and have multiplied My signs and My wonders in the land of Egypt, | But I will harden Pharaoh’s heart, and though I multiply my signs and wonders in the land of Egypt, | But I will harden Pharaoh’s heart, and though I multiply my signs and wonders in Egypt, |
and Pharaoh does not listen, and I have put My hand on Egypt, and have brought out My hosts, My people, the sons of Israel, from the land of Egypt by great judgments; | Pharaoh will not listen to you. Then I will lay my hand on Egypt and bring my hosts, my people the children of Israel, out of the land of Egypt by great acts of judgment. | he will not listen to you. Then I will lay my hand on Egypt and with mighty acts of judgment I will bring out my divisions, my people the Israelites. |
and the Egyptians have known that I [am] YHWH, in My stretching out My hand against Egypt; and I have brought out the sons of Israel from their midst.” | The Egyptians shall know that I am the LORD, when I stretch out my hand against Egypt and bring out the people of Israel from among them.” | And the Egyptians will know that I am the LORD when I stretch out my hand against Egypt and bring the Israelites out of it.” |
And Moses does—Aaron also—as YHWH commanded them; so have they done; | Moses and Aaron did so; they did just as the LORD commanded them. | Moses and Aaron did just as the LORD commanded them. |
and Moses [is] a son of eighty years, and Aaron [is] a son of eighty-three years, in their speaking to Pharaoh. | Now Moses was eighty years old, and Aaron eighty-three years old, when they spoke to Pharaoh. | Moses was eighty years old and Aaron eighty-three when they spoke to Pharaoh. |
And YHWH speaks to Moses and to Aaron, saying, | Then the LORD said to Moses and Aaron, | The LORD said to Moses and Aaron, |
“When Pharaoh speaks to you, saying, Give a wonder for yourselves; then you have said to Aaron, Take your rod and cast [it] before Pharaoh—it becomes a dragon.” | “When Pharaoh says to you, ‘Prove yourselves by working a miracle,’ then you shall say to Aaron, ‘Take your staff and cast it down before Pharaoh, that it may become a serpent.’” | “When Pharaoh says to you, ‘Perform a miracle,’ then say to Aaron, ‘Take your staff and throw it down before Pharaoh,’ and it will become a snake.” |
And Moses goes in—Aaron also—to Pharaoh, and they do so as YHWH has commanded; and Aaron casts his rod before Pharaoh and before his servants, and it becomes a dragon. | So Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and did just as the LORD commanded. Aaron cast down his staff before Pharaoh and his servants, and it became a serpent. | So Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and did just as the LORD commanded. Aaron threw his staff down in front of Pharaoh and his officials, and it became a snake. |
And Pharaoh also calls for wise men and for sorcerers; and the enchanters of Egypt, they also, with their [enchanting] flames, do so, | Then Pharaoh summoned the wise men and the sorcerers, and they, the magicians of Egypt, also did the same by their secret arts. | Pharaoh then summoned wise men and sorcerers, and the Egyptian magicians also did the same things by their secret arts: |
and they each cast down his rod, and they become dragons, and the rod of Aaron swallows their rods; | For each man cast down his staff, and they became serpents. But Aaron’s staff swallowed up their staffs. | Each one threw down his staff and it became a snake. But Aaron’s staff swallowed up their staffs. |
and the heart of Pharaoh is strong, and he has not listened to them, as YHWH has spoken. | Still Pharaoh’s heart was hardened, and he would not listen to them, as the LORD had said. | Yet Pharaoh’s heart became hard and he would not listen to them, just as the LORD had said. |
And YHWH says to Moses, “The heart of Pharaoh has been hard, he has refused to send the people away; | Then the LORD said to Moses, “Pharaoh’s heart is hardened; he refuses to let the people go. | Then the LORD said to Moses, “Pharaoh’s heart is unyielding; he refuses to let the people go. |
go to Pharaoh in the morning, behold, he is going out to the water, and you have stood to meet him by the edge of the River, and the rod which was turned to a serpent you take in your hand, | Go to Pharaoh in the morning, as he is going out to the water. Stand on the bank of the Nile to meet him, and take in your hand the staff that turned into a serpent. | Go to Pharaoh in the morning as he goes out to the river. Confront him on the bank of the Nile, and take in your hand the staff that was changed into a snake. |
and you have said to him: YHWH, God of the Hebrews, has sent me to you, saying, Send My people away, and they serve Me in the wilderness; and behold, you have not listened until now. | And you shall say to him, ‘The LORD, the God of the Hebrews, sent me to you, saying, “Let my people go, that they may serve me in the wilderness.” But so far, you have not obeyed. | Then say to him, ‘The LORD, the God of the Hebrews, has sent me to say to you: Let my people go, so that they may worship me in the wilderness. But until now you have not listened. |
Thus said YHWH: By this you know that I [am] YHWH; behold, I am striking with the rod which [is] in my hand, on the waters which [are] in the River, and they have been turned to blood, | Thus says the LORD, “By this you shall know that I am the LORD: behold, with the staff that is in my hand I will strike the water that is in the Nile, and it shall turn into blood. | This is what the LORD says: By this you will know that I am the LORD: With the staff that is in my hand I will strike the water of the Nile, and it will be changed into blood. |
and the fish that [are] in the River die, and the River has stunk, and the Egyptians have been wearied of drinking waters from the River.” | The fish in the Nile shall die, and the Nile will stink, and the Egyptians will grow weary of drinking water from the Nile.”’” | The fish in the Nile will die, and the river will stink; the Egyptians will not be able to drink its water.’” |
And YHWH says to Moses, “Say to Aaron, Take your rod, and stretch out your hand against the waters of Egypt, against their streams, against their rivers, and against their ponds, and against all their collections of waters; and they are blood—and there has been blood in all the land of Egypt, both in [vessels of] wood, and in [those of] stone.” | And the LORD said to Moses, “Say to Aaron, ‘Take your staff and stretch out your hand over the waters of Egypt, over their rivers, their canals, and their ponds, and all their pools of water, so that they may become blood, and there shall be blood throughout all the land of Egypt, even in vessels of wood and in vessels of stone.’” | The LORD said to Moses, “Tell Aaron, ‘Take your staff and stretch out your hand over the waters of Egypt—over the streams and canals, over the ponds and all the reservoirs—and they will turn to blood.’ Blood will be everywhere in Egypt, even in vessels of wood and stone.” |
And Moses and Aaron do so, as YHWH has commanded, and he lifts up [his hand] with the rod, and strikes the waters which [are] in the River, before the eyes of Pharaoh and before the eyes of his servants, and all the waters which [are] in the River are turned to blood, | Moses and Aaron did as the LORD commanded. In the sight of Pharaoh and in the sight of his servants he lifted up the staff and struck the water in the Nile, and all the water in the Nile turned into blood. | Moses and Aaron did just as the LORD had commanded. He raised his staff in the presence of Pharaoh and his officials and struck the water of the Nile, and all the water was changed into blood. |
and the fish which [is] in the River has died, and the River stinks, and the Egyptians have not been able to drink water from the River; and the blood is in all the land of Egypt. | And the fish in the Nile died, and the Nile stank, so that the Egyptians could not drink water from the Nile. There was blood throughout all the land of Egypt. | The fish in the Nile died, and the river smelled so bad that the Egyptians could not drink its water. Blood was everywhere in Egypt. |
And the enchanters of Egypt do so with their secrets, and the heart of Pharaoh is strong, and he has not listened to them, as YHWH has spoken, | But the magicians of Egypt did the same by their secret arts. So Pharaoh’s heart remained hardened, and he would not listen to them, as the LORD had said. | But the Egyptian magicians did the same things by their secret arts, and Pharaoh’s heart became hard; he would not listen to Moses and Aaron, just as the LORD had said. |
and Pharaoh turns and goes into his house, and has not set his heart even to this; | Pharaoh turned and went into his house, and he did not take even this to heart. | Instead, he turned and went into his palace, and did not take even this to heart. |
and all the Egyptians seek water all around the River to drink, for they have not been able to drink of the waters of the River. | And all the Egyptians dug along the Nile for water to drink, for they could not drink the water of the Nile. | And all the Egyptians dug along the Nile to get drinking water, because they could not drink the water of the river. |
And seven days are completed after YHWH’s striking the River. | Seven full days passed after the LORD had struck the Nile. | Seven days passed after the LORD struck the Nile. |
