“If you see your neighbor’s ox or sheep or goat wandering away, don’t ignore your responsibility. Take it back to its owner. “You shall not see your brother’s ox or his sheep going astray and ignore them. You shall take them back to your brother. If you see your fellow Israelite’s ox or sheep straying, do not ignore it but be sure to take it back to its owner.
If its owner does not live nearby or you don’t know who the owner is, take it to your place and keep it until the owner comes looking for it. Then you must return it. And if he does not live near you and you do not know who he is, you shall bring it home to your house, and it shall stay with you until your brother seeks it. Then you shall restore it to him. If they do not live near you or if you do not know who owns it, take it home with you and keep it until they come looking for it. Then give it back.
Do the same if you find your neighbor’s donkey, clothing, or anything else your neighbor loses. Don’t ignore your responsibility. And you shall do the same with his donkey or with his garment, or with any lost thing of your brother’s, which he loses and you find; you may not ignore it. Do the same if you find their donkey or cloak or anything else they have lost. Do not ignore it.
“If you see that your neighbor’s donkey or ox has collapsed on the road, do not look the other way. Go and help your neighbor get it back on its feet! You shall not see your brother’s donkey or his ox fallen down by the way and ignore them. You shall help him to lift them up again. If you see your fellow Israelite’s donkey or ox fallen on the road, do not ignore it. Help the owner get it to its feet.
“A woman must not put on men’s clothing, and a man must not wear women’s clothing. Anyone who does this is detestable in the sight of the LORD your God. “A woman shall not wear a man’s garment, nor shall a man put on a woman’s cloak, for whoever does these things is an abomination to the LORD your God. A woman must not wear men’s clothing, nor a man wear women’s clothing, for the LORD your God detests anyone who does this.
“If you happen to find a bird’s nest in a tree or on the ground, and there are young ones or eggs in it with the mother sitting in the nest, do not take the mother with the young. “If you come across a bird’s nest in any tree or on the ground, with young ones or eggs and the mother sitting on the young or on the eggs, you shall not take the mother with the young. If you come across a bird’s nest beside the road, either in a tree or on the ground, and the mother is sitting on the young or on the eggs, do not take the mother with the young.
You may take the young, but let the mother go, so that you may prosper and enjoy a long life. You shall let the mother go, but the young you may take for yourself, that it may go well with you, and that you may live long. You may take the young, but be sure to let the mother go, so that it may go well with you and you may have a long life.
“When you build a new house, you must build a railing around the edge of its flat roof. That way you will not be considered guilty of murder if someone falls from the roof. “When you build a new house, you shall make a parapet for your roof, that you may not bring the guilt of blood upon your house, if anyone should fall from it. When you build a new house, make a parapet around your roof so that you may not bring the guilt of bloodshed on your house if someone falls from the roof.
“You must not plant any other crop between the rows of your vineyard. If you do, you are forbidden to use either the grapes from the vineyard or the other crop. “You shall not sow your vineyard with two kinds of seed, lest the whole yield be forfeited, the crop that you have sown and the yield of the vineyard. Do not plant two kinds of seed in your vineyard; if you do, not only the crops you plant but also the fruit of the vineyard will be defiled.
“You must not plow with an ox and a donkey harnessed together. You shall not plow with an ox and a donkey together. Do not plow with an ox and a donkey yoked together.
“You must not wear clothing made of wool and linen woven together. You shall not wear cloth of wool and linen mixed together. Do not wear clothes of wool and linen woven together.
“You must put four tassels on the hem of the cloak with which you cover yourself—on the front, back, and sides. “You shall make yourself tassels on the four corners of the garment with which you cover yourself. Make tassels on the four corners of the cloak you wear.
“Suppose a man marries a woman, but after sleeping with her, he turns against her “If any man takes a wife and goes in to her and then hates her If a man takes a wife and, after sleeping with her, dislikes her
and publicly accuses her of shameful conduct, saying, ‘When I married this woman, I discovered she was not a virgin.’ and accuses her of misconduct and brings a bad name upon her, saying, ‘I took this woman, and when I came near her, I did not find in her evidence of virginity,’ and slanders her and gives her a bad name, saying, “I married this woman, but when I approached her, I did not find proof of her virginity,”
Then the woman’s father and mother must bring the proof of her virginity to the elders as they hold court at the town gate. then the father of the young woman and her mother shall take and bring out the evidence of her virginity to the elders of the city in the gate. then the young woman’s father and mother shall bring to the town elders at the gate proof that she was a virgin.
Her father must say to them, ‘I gave my daughter to this man to be his wife, and now he has turned against her. And the father of the young woman shall say to the elders, ‘I gave my daughter to this man to marry, and he hates her; Her father will say to the elders, “I gave my daughter in marriage to this man, but he dislikes her.
He has accused her of shameful conduct, saying, “I discovered that your daughter was not a virgin.” But here is the proof of my daughter’s virginity.’ Then they must spread her bed sheet before the elders. and behold, he has accused her of misconduct, saying, “I did not find in your daughter evidence of virginity.” And yet this is the evidence of my daughter’s virginity.’ And they shall spread the cloak before the elders of the city. Now he has slandered her and said, ‘I did not find your daughter to be a virgin.’ But here is the proof of my daughter’s virginity.” Then her parents shall display the cloth before the elders of the town,
The elders must then take the man and punish him. Then the elders of that city shall take the man and whip him, and the elders shall take the man and punish him.
They must also fine him 100 pieces of silver, which he must pay to the woman’s father because he publicly accused a virgin of Israel of shameful conduct. The woman will then remain the man’s wife, and he may never divorce her. and they shall fine him a hundred shekels of silver and give them to the father of the young woman, because he has brought a bad name upon a virgin of Israel. And she shall be his wife. He may not divorce her all his days. They shall fine him a hundred shekels of silver and give them to the young woman’s father, because this man has given an Israelite virgin a bad name. She shall continue to be his wife; he must not divorce her as long as he lives.
“But suppose the man’s accusations are true, and he can show that she was not a virgin. But if the thing is true, that evidence of virginity was not found in the young woman, If, however, the charge is true and no proof of the young woman’s virginity can be found,
The woman must be taken to the door of her father’s home, and there the men of the town must stone her to death, for she has committed a disgraceful crime in Israel by being promiscuous while living in her parents’ home. In this way, you will purge this evil from among you. then they shall bring out the young woman to the door of her father’s house, and the men of her city shall stone her to death with stones, because she has done an outrageous thing in Israel by whoring in her father’s house. So you shall purge the evil from your midst. she shall be brought to the door of her father’s house and there the men of her town shall stone her to death. She has done an outrageous thing in Israel by being promiscuous while still in her father’s house. You must purge the evil from among you.
“If a man is discovered committing adultery, both he and the woman must die. In this way, you will purge Israel of such evil. “If a man is found lying with the wife of another man, both of them shall die, the man who lay with the woman, and the woman. So you shall purge the evil from Israel. If a man is found sleeping with another man’s wife, both the man who slept with her and the woman must die. You must purge the evil from Israel.
“Suppose a man meets a young woman, a virgin who is engaged to be married, and he has sexual intercourse with her. If this happens within a town, “If there is a betrothed virgin, and a man meets her in the city and lies with her, If a man happens to meet in a town a virgin pledged to be married and he sleeps with her,
you must take both of them to the gates of that town and stone them to death. The woman is guilty because she did not scream for help. The man must die because he violated another man’s wife. In this way, you will purge this evil from among you. then you shall bring them both out to the gate of that city, and you shall stone them to death with stones, the young woman because she did not cry for help though she was in the city, and the man because he violated his neighbor’s wife. So you shall purge the evil from your midst. you shall take both of them to the gate of that town and stone them to death—the young woman because she was in a town and did not scream for help, and the man because he violated another man’s wife. You must purge the evil from among you.
“But if the man meets the engaged woman out in the country, and he rapes her, then only the man must die. “But if in the open country a man meets a young woman who is betrothed, and the man seizes her and lies with her, then only the man who lay with her shall die. But if out in the country a man happens to meet a young woman pledged to be married and rapes her, only the man who has done this shall die.
Do nothing to the young woman; she has committed no crime worthy of death. She is as innocent as a murder victim. But you shall do nothing to the young woman; she has committed no offense punishable by death. For this case is like that of a man attacking and murdering his neighbor, Do nothing to the woman; she has committed no sin deserving death. This case is like that of someone who attacks and murders a neighbor,
Since the man raped her out in the country, it must be assumed that she screamed, but there was no one to rescue her. because he met her in the open country, and though the betrothed young woman cried for help there was no one to rescue her. for the man found the young woman out in the country, and though the betrothed woman screamed, there was no one to rescue her.
“Suppose a man has intercourse with a young woman who is a virgin but is not engaged to be married. If they are discovered, “If a man meets a virgin who is not betrothed, and seizes her and lies with her, and they are found, If a man happens to meet a virgin who is not pledged to be married and rapes her and they are discovered,
he must pay her father fifty pieces of silver. Then he must marry the young woman because he violated her, and he may never divorce her as long as he lives. then the man who lay with her shall give to the father of the young woman fifty shekels of silver, and she shall be his wife, because he has violated her. He may not divorce her all his days. he shall pay her father fifty shekels of silver. He must marry the young woman, for he has violated her. He can never divorce her as long as he lives.
“A man must not marry his father’s former wife, for this would violate his father. “A man shall not take his father’s wife, so that he does not uncover his father’s nakedness. A man is not to marry his father’s wife; he must not dishonor his father’s bed.
