But a man named Ananias, with his wife Sapphira, sold a piece of property, | But a man named Ananias, with his wife Sapphira, sold a piece of property. | But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession, | But a man named Ananias, with his wife Sapphira, sold a piece of property, |
and with his wife’s knowledge he kept back for himself some of the proceeds and brought only a part of it and laid it at the apostles’ feet. | However, he kept back part of the proceeds with his wife’s knowledge, and brought a portion of it and laid it at the apostles’ feet. | And kept back part of the price, his wife also being privy to it, and brought a certain part, and laid it at the apostles' feet. | and kept back some of the proceeds for himself, with his wife’s full knowledge, and bringing a portion of it, he laid it at the apostles’ feet. |
But Peter said, “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and to keep back for yourself part of the proceeds of the land? | Then Peter said, “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and keep back part of the proceeds from the field? | But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land? | But Peter said, “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and to keep back some of the proceeds of the land? |
While it remained unsold, did it not remain your own? And after it was sold, was it not at your disposal? Why is it that you have contrived this deed in your heart? You have not lied to man but to God.” | Wasn’t it yours while you possessed it? And after it was sold, wasn’t it at your disposal? Why is it that you planned this thing in your heart? You have not lied to men but to God!” | Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God. | While it remained unsold, did it not remain your own? And after it was sold, was it not under your control? Why is it that you have conceived this deed in your heart? You have not lied to men, but to God.” |
When Ananias heard these words, he fell down and breathed his last. And great fear came upon all who heard of it. | When he heard these words, Ananias dropped dead, and a great fear came on all who heard. | And Ananias hearing these words fell down, and gave up the ghost: and great fear came on all them that heard these things. | And as he heard these words, Ananias collapsed and died; and great fear came over all who heard about it. |
The young men rose and wrapped him up and carried him out and buried him. | The young men got up, wrapped his body, carried him out, and buried him. | And the young men arose, wound him up, and carried him out, and buried him. | The young men got up and covered him up, and after carrying him out, they buried him. |
After an interval of about three hours his wife came in, not knowing what had happened. | There was an interval of about three hours; then his wife came in, not knowing what had happened. “ | And it was about the space of three hours after, when his wife, not knowing what was done, came in. | Now an interval of about three hours elapsed, and his wife came in, not knowing what had happened. |
And Peter said to her, “Tell me whether you sold the land for so much.” And she said, “Yes, for so much.” | Tell me,” Peter asked her, “did you sell the field for this price?|” Yes,” she said, “for that price.” | And Peter answered unto her, Tell me whether ye sold the land for so much? And she said, Yea, for so much. | And Peter responded to her, “Tell me whether you sold the land for this price?” And she said, “Yes, for that price.” |
But Peter said to her, “How is it that you have agreed together to test the Spirit of the Lord? Behold, the feet of those who have buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out.” | Then Peter said to her, “Why did you agree to test the Spirit of the Lord? Look! The feet of those who have buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out!” | Then Peter said unto her, How is it that ye have agreed together to tempt the Spirit of the Lord? behold, the feet of them which have buried thy husband are at the door, and shall carry thee out. | Then Peter said to her, “Why is it that you have agreed together to put the Spirit of the Lord to the test? Behold, the feet of those who have buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out as well.” |
Immediately she fell down at his feet and breathed her last. When the young men came in they found her dead, and they carried her out and buried her beside her husband. | Instantly she dropped dead at his feet. When the young men came in, they found her dead, carried her out, and buried her beside her husband. | Then fell she down straightway at his feet, and yielded up the ghost: and the young men came in, and found her dead, and, carrying her forth, buried her by her husband. | And immediately she collapsed at his feet and died; and the young men came in and found her dead, and they carried her out and buried her beside her husband. |
And great fear came upon the whole church and upon all who heard of these things. | Then great fear came on the whole church and on all who heard these things. | And great fear came upon all the church, and upon as many as heard these things. | And great fear came over the whole church, and over all who heard about these things. |
Now many signs and wonders were regularly done among the people by the hands of the apostles. And they were all together in Solomon’s Portico. | Many signs and wonders were being done among the people through the hands of the apostles. By common consent they would all meet in Solomon’s Colonnade. | And by the hands of the apostles were many signs and wonders wrought among the people; (and they were all with one accord in Solomon's porch. | At the hands of the apostles many signs and wonders were taking place among the people; and they were all together in Solomon’s portico. |
None of the rest dared join them, but the people held them in high esteem. | None of the rest dared to join them, but the people praised them highly. | And of the rest durst no man join himself to them: but the people magnified them. | But none of the rest dared to associate with them; however, the people held them in high esteem. |
And more than ever believers were added to the Lord, multitudes of both men and women, | Believers were added to the Lord in increasing numbers—crowds of both men and women. | And believers were the more added to the Lord, multitudes both of men and women.) | And increasingly believers in the Lord, large numbers of men and women, were being added to their number, |
so that they even carried out the sick into the streets and laid them on cots and mats, that as Peter came by at least his shadow might fall on some of them. | As a result, they would carry the sick out into the streets and lay them on cots and mats so that when Peter came by, at least his shadow might fall on some of them. | Insomuch that they brought forth the sick into the streets, and laid them on beds and couches, that at the least the shadow of Peter passing by might overshadow some of them. | to such an extent that they even carried the sick out into the streets and laid them on cots and pallets, so that when Peter came by at least his shadow might fall on any of them. |
The people also gathered from the towns around Jerusalem, bringing the sick and those afflicted with unclean spirits, and they were all healed. | In addition, a large group came together from the towns surrounding Jerusalem, bringing sick people and those who were tormented by unclean spirits, and they were all healed. | There came also a multitude out of the cities round about unto Jerusalem, bringing sick folks, and them which were vexed with unclean spirits: and they were healed every one. | The people from the cities in the vicinity of Jerusalem were coming together as well, bringing people who were sick or tormented with unclean spirits, and they were all being healed. |
But the high priest rose up, and all who were with him (that is, the party of the Sadducees), and filled with jealousy | Then the high priest took action. He and all his colleagues, those who belonged to the party of the Sadducees, were filled with jealousy. | Then the high priest rose up, and all they that were with him, (which is the sect of the Sadducees,) and were filled with indignation, | But the high priest stood up, along with all his associates (that is the sect of the Sadducees), and they were filled with jealousy. |
they arrested the apostles and put them in the public prison. | So they arrested the apostles and put them in the city jail. | And laid their hands on the apostles, and put them in the common prison. | They laid hands on the apostles and put them in a public prison. |
But during the night an angel of the Lord opened the prison doors and brought them out, and said, | But an angel of the Lord opened the doors of the jail during the night, brought them out, and said,” | But the angel of the Lord by night opened the prison doors, and brought them forth, and said, | But during the night an angel of the Lord opened the gates of the prison, and leading them out, he said, |
“Go and stand in the temple and speak to the people all the words of this Life.” | Go and stand in the temple complex, and tell the people all about this life.” | Go, stand and speak in the temple to the people all the words of this life. | “Go, stand and speak to the people in the temple area the whole message of this Life.” |
And when they heard this, they entered the temple at daybreak and began to teach. Now when the high priest came, and those who were with him, they called together the council, all the senate of the people of Israel, and sent to the prison to have them brought. | In obedience to this, they entered the temple complex at daybreak and began to teach. When the high priest and those who were with him arrived, they convened the Sanhedrin—the full Senate of the sons of Israel—and sent orders to the jail to have them brought. | And when they heard that, they entered into the temple early in the morning, and taught. But the high priest came, and they that were with him, and called the council together, and all the senate of the children of Israel, and sent to the prison to have them brought. | Upon hearing this, they entered into the temple area about daybreak and began to teach. Now when the high priest and his associates came, they called the Council together, that is, all the Senate of the sons of Israel, and sent orders to the prison for them to be brought. |
But when the officers came, they did not find them in the prison, so they returned and reported, | But when the temple police got there, they did not find them in the jail, so they returned and reported, “ | But when the officers came, and found them not in the prison, they returned, and told, | But the officers who came did not find them in the prison; and they returned and reported, |
“We found the prison securely locked and the guards standing at the doors, but when we opened them we found no one inside.” | We found the jail securely locked, with the guards standing in front of the doors, but when we opened them, we found no one inside!” | Saying, The prison truly found we shut with all safety, and the keepers standing without before the doors: but when we had opened, we found no man within. | saying, “We found the prison locked quite securely and the guards standing at the doors; but when we opened them, we found no one inside.” |
Now when the captain of the temple and the chief priests heard these words, they were greatly perplexed about them, wondering what this would come to. | As the commander of the temple police and the chief priests heard these things, they were baffled about them, as to what could come of this. | Now when the high priest and the captain of the temple and the chief priests heard these things, they doubted of them whereunto this would grow. | Now when the captain of the temple guard and the chief priests heard these words, they were greatly perplexed about them as to what would come of this. |
And someone came and told them, “Look! The men whom you put in prison are standing in the temple and teaching the people.” | Someone came and reported to them, “Look! The men you put in jail are standing in the temple complex and teaching the people.” | Then came one and told them, saying, Behold, the men whom ye put in prison are standing in the temple, and teaching the people. | But someone came and reported to them, “The men whom you put in prison are standing in the temple area and teaching the people!” |
Then the captain with the officers went and brought them, but not by force, for they were afraid of being stoned by the people. | Then the commander went with the temple police and brought them in without force, because they were afraid the people might stone them. | Then went the captain with the officers, and brought them without violence: for they feared the people, lest they should have been stoned. | Then the captain went along with the officers and proceeded to bring them back without violence (for they were afraid of the people, that they might be stoned). |
And when they had brought them, they set them before the council. And the high priest questioned them, | After they brought them in, they had them stand before the Sanhedrin, and the high priest asked, “ | And when they had brought them, they set them before the council: and the high priest asked them, | When they had brought them, they had them stand before the Council. The high priest interrogated them, |
saying, “We strictly charged you not to teach in this name, yet here you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching, and you intend to bring this man’s blood upon us.” | Didn’t we strictly order you not to teach in this name? And look, you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and are determined to bring this man’s blood on us!” | Saying, Did not we straitly command you that ye should not teach in this name? and, behold, ye have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine, and intend to bring this man's blood upon us. | saying, “We gave you strict orders not to continue teaching in this name, and yet, you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and intend to bring this Man’s blood upon us.” |
But Peter and the apostles answered, “We must obey God rather than men. | But Peter and the apostles replied, “We must obey God rather than men. | Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, We ought to obey God rather than men. | But Peter and the apostles answered, “We must obey God rather than men. |
The God of our fathers raised Jesus, whom you killed by hanging him on a tree. | The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom you had murdered by hanging Him on a tree. | The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom ye slew and hanged on a tree. | The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom you put to death by hanging Him on a cross. |
God exalted him at his right hand as Leader and Savior, to give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins. | God exalted this man to His right hand as ruler and Savior, to grant repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins. | Him hath God exalted with his right hand to be a Prince and a Saviour, for to give repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins. | He is the one whom God exalted to His right hand as a Prince and a Savior, to grant repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins. |
And we are witnesses to these things, and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey him.” | We are witnesses of these things, and so is the Holy Spirit whom God has given to those who obey Him.” | And we are his witnesses of these things; and so is also the Holy Ghost, whom God hath given to them that obey him. | And we are witnesses of these things; and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey Him.” |
When they heard this, they were enraged and wanted to kill them. | When they heard this, they were enraged and wanted to kill them. | When they heard that, they were cut to the heart, and took counsel to slay them. | But when they heard this, they became infuriated and nearly decided to execute them. |
But a Pharisee in the council named Gamaliel, a teacher of the law held in honor by all the people, stood up and gave orders to put the men outside for a little while. | A Pharisee named Gamaliel, a teacher of the law who was respected by all the people, stood up in the Sanhedrin and ordered the men to be taken outside for a little while. | Then stood there up one in the council, a Pharisee, named Gamaliel, a doctor of the law, had in reputation among all the people, and commanded to put the apostles forth a little space; | But a Pharisee named Gamaliel, a teacher of the Law, respected by all the people, stood up in the Council and gave orders to put the men outside for a short time. |
And he said to them, “Men of Israel, take care what you are about to do with these men. | He said to them, “Men of Israel, be careful about what you’re going to do to these men. | And said unto them, Ye men of Israel, take heed to yourselves what ye intend to do as touching these men. | And he said to them, “Men of Israel, be careful as to what you are about to do with these men. |
For before these days Theudas rose up, claiming to be somebody, and a number of men, about four hundred, joined him. He was killed, and all who followed him were dispersed and came to nothing. | Not long ago Theudas rose up, claiming to be somebody, and a group of about 400 men rallied to him. He was killed, and all his partisans were dispersed and came to nothing. | For before these days rose up Theudas, boasting himself to be somebody; to whom a number of men, about four hundred, joined themselves: who was slain; and all, as many as obeyed him, were scattered, and brought to nought. | For, some time ago Theudas appeared, claiming to be somebody, and a group of about four hundred men joined him. But he was killed, and all who followed him were dispersed and came to nothing. |
After him Judas the Galilean rose up in the days of the census and drew away some of the people after him. He too perished, and all who followed him were scattered. | After this man, Judas the Galilean rose up in the days of the census and attracted a following. That man also perished, and all his partisans were scattered. | After this man rose up Judas of Galilee in the days of the taxing, and drew away much people after him: he also perished; and all, even as many as obeyed him, were dispersed. | After this man, Judas of Galilee appeared in the days of the census and drew away some people after him; he also perished, and all those who followed him were scattered. |
So in the present case I tell you, keep away from these men and let them alone, for if this plan or this undertaking is of man, it will fail; | And now, I tell you, stay away from these men and leave them alone. For if this plan or this work is of men, it will be overthrown; | And now I say unto you, Refrain from these men, and let them alone: for if this counsel or this work be of men, it will come to nought: | And so in the present case, I say to you, stay away from these men and leave them alone, for if the source of this plan or movement is men, it will be overthrown; |
but if it is of God, you will not be able to overthrow them. You might even be found opposing God!” So they took his advice, | but if it is of God, you will not be able to overthrow them. You may even be found fighting against God.” So they were persuaded by him. | But if it be of God, ye cannot overthrow it; lest haply ye be found even to fight against God. | but if the source is God, you will not be able to overthrow them; or else you may even be found fighting against God.” |
and when they had called in the apostles, they beat them and charged them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go. | After they called in the apostles and had them flogged, they ordered them not to speak in the name of Jesus and released them. | And to him they agreed: and when they had called the apostles, and beaten them, they commanded that they should not speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go. | They followed his advice; and after calling the apostles in, they flogged them and ordered them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and then released them. |
Then they left the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer dishonor for the name. | Then they went out from the presence of the Sanhedrin, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to be dishonored on behalf of the Name. | And they departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for his name. | So they went on their way from the presence of the Council, rejoicing that they had been considered worthy to suffer shame for His name. |
And every day, in the temple and from house to house, they did not cease teaching and preaching that the Christ is Jesus. | Every day in the temple complex, and in various homes, they continued teaching and proclaiming the good news that Jesus is the Messiah. | And daily in the temple, and in every house, they ceased not to teach and preach Jesus Christ. | And every day, in the temple and from house to house, they did not stop teaching and preaching the good news of Jesus as the Christ. |
