1 AND as they were speaking to the people, the priests, and the officer of the temple, and the Sadducees, came upon them, And as they were speaking to the people, the priests and the captain of the temple and the Sadducees came upon them, The priests and the captain of the temple guard and the Sadducees came up to Peter and John while they were speaking to the people.
2 Being grieved that they taught the people, and preached in Jesus the resurrection from the dead: greatly annoyed because they were teaching the people and proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection from the dead. They were greatly disturbed because the apostles were teaching the people, proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection of the dead.
3 And they laid hands upon them, and put them in hold till the next day; for it was now evening. And they arrested them and put them in custody until the next day, for it was already evening. They seized Peter and John and, because it was evening, they put them in jail until the next day.
4 But many of them who had heard the word, believed; and the number of the men was made five thousand. But many of those who had heard the word believed, and the number of the men came to about five thousand. But many who heard the message believed; so the number of men who believed grew to about five thousand.
5 And it came to pass on the morrow, that their princes, and ancients, and scribes, were gathered together in Jerusalem; On the next day their rulers and elders and scribes gathered together in Jerusalem, The next day the rulers, the elders and the teachers of the law met in Jerusalem.
6 And Annas the high priest, and Caiphas, and John, and Alexander, and as many as were of the kindred of the high priest. with Annas the high priest and Caiaphas and John and Alexander, and all who were of the high-priestly family. Annas the high priest was there, and so were Caiaphas, John, Alexander and others of the high priest’s family.
7 And setting them in the midst, they asked: By what power, or by what name, have you done this? And when they had set them in the midst, they inquired, “By what power or by what name did you do this?” They had Peter and John brought before them and began to question them: “By what power or what name did you do this?”
8 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Ghost, said to them: Ye princes of the people, and ancients, hear: Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, “Rulers of the people and elders, Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them: “Rulers and elders of the people!
9 If we this day are examined concerning the good deed done to the infirm man, by what means he hath been made whole: if we are being examined today concerning a good deed done to a crippled man, by what means this man has been healed, If we are being called to account today for an act of kindness shown to a man who was lame and are being asked how he was healed,
10 Be it known to you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God hath raised from the dead, even by him this man standeth here before you whole. let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead—by him this man is standing before you well. then know this, you and all the people of Israel: It is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified but whom God raised from the dead, that this man stands before you healed.
11 This is the stone which was rejected by you the builders, which is become the head of the corner. This Jesus is the stone that was rejected by you, the builders, which has become the cornerstone. Jesus is “’the stone you builders rejected, which has become the cornerstone.’
12 Neither is there salvation in any other. For there is no other name under heaven given to men, whereby we must be saved. And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.”
13 Now seeing the constancy of Peter and of John, understanding that they were illiterate and ignorant men, they wondered; and they knew them that they had been with Jesus. Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated, common men, they were astonished. And they recognized that they had been with Jesus. When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus.
14 Seeing the man also who had been healed standing with them, they could say nothing against it. But seeing the man who was healed standing beside them, they had nothing to say in opposition. But since they could see the man who had been healed standing there with them, there was nothing they could say.
15 But they commanded them to go aside out of the council; and they conferred among themselves, But when they had commanded them to leave the council, they conferred with one another, So they ordered them to withdraw from the Sanhedrin and then conferred together.
16 Saying: What shall we do to these men? for indeed a known miracle hath been done by them, to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem: it is manifest, and we cannot deny it. saying, “What shall we do with these men? For that a notable sign has been performed through them is evident to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it. “What are we going to do with these men?” they asked. “Everyone living in Jerusalem knows they have performed a notable sign, and we cannot deny it.
17 But that it may be no farther spread among the people, let us threaten them that they speak no more in this name to any man. But in order that it may spread no further among the people, let us warn them to speak no more to anyone in this name.” But to stop this thing from spreading any further among the people, we must warn them to speak no longer to anyone in this name.”
18 And calling them, they charged them not to speak at all, nor teach in the name of Jesus. So they called them and charged them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus. Then they called them in again and commanded them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus.
19 But Peter and John answering, said to them: If it be just in the sight of God, to hear you rather than God, judge ye. But Peter and John answered them, “Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you rather than to God, you must judge, But Peter and John replied, “Which is right in God’s eyes: to listen to you, or to him? You be the judges!
20 For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard. for we cannot but speak of what we have seen and heard.” As for us, we cannot help speaking about what we have seen and heard.”
21 But they threatening, sent them away, not finding how they might punish them, because of the people; for all men glorified what had been done, in that which had come to pass. And when they had further threatened them, they let them go, finding no way to punish them, because of the people, for all were praising God for what had happened. After further threats they let them go. They could not decide how to punish them, because all the people were praising God for what had happened.
22 For the man was above forty years old, in whom that miraculous cure had been wrought. For the man on whom this sign of healing was performed was more than forty years old. For the man who was miraculously healed was over forty years old.
23 And being let go, they came to their own company, and related all that the chief priests and ancients had said to them. When they were released, they went to their friends and reported what the chief priests and the elders had said to them. On their release, Peter and John went back to their own people and reported all that the chief priests and the elders had said to them.
24 Who having heard it, with one accord lifted up their voice to God, and said: Lord, thou art he that didst make heaven and earth, the sea, and all things that are in them. And when they heard it, they lifted their voices together to God and said, “Sovereign Lord, who made the heaven and the earth and the sea and everything in them, When they heard this, they raised their voices together in prayer to God. “Sovereign Lord,” they said, “you made the heavens and the earth and the sea, and everything in them.
25 Who, by the Holy Ghost, by the mouth of our father David, thy servant, hast said: Why did the Gentiles rage, and the people meditate vain things? who through the mouth of our father David, your servant, said by the Holy Spirit, “‘Why did the Gentiles rage, and the peoples plot in vain? You spoke by the Holy Spirit through the mouth of your servant, our father David: “’Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain?
26 The kings of the earth stood up, and the princes assembled together against the Lord and his Christ. The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers were gathered together, against the Lord and against his Anointed’— The kings of the earth rise up and the rulers band together against the Lord and against his anointed one.’
27 For of a truth there assembled together in this city against thy holy child Jesus, whom thou hast anointed, Herod, and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles and the people of Israel, for truly in this city there were gathered together against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, along with the Gentiles and the peoples of Israel, Indeed Herod and Pontius Pilate met together with the Gentiles and the people of Israel in this city to conspire against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed.
28 To do what thy hand and thy counsel decreed to be done. to do whatever your hand and your plan had predestined to take place. They did what your power and will had decided beforehand should happen.
29 And now, Lord, behold their threatenings, and grant unto thy servants, that with all confidence they may speak thy word, And now, Lord, look upon their threats and grant to your servants to continue to speak your word with all boldness, Now, Lord, consider their threats and enable your servants to speak your word with great boldness.
30 By stretching forth thy hand to cures, and signs, and wonders to be done by the name of thy holy Son Jesus. while you stretch out your hand to heal, and signs and wonders are performed through the name of your holy servant Jesus.” Stretch out your hand to heal and perform signs and wonders through the name of your holy servant Jesus.”
31 And when they had prayed, the place was moved wherein they were assembled; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spoke the word of God with confidence. And when they had prayed, the place in which they were gathered together was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and continued to speak the word of God with boldness. After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly.
32 And the multitude of believers had but one heart and one soul: neither did any one say that aught of the things which he possessed, was his own; but all things were common unto them. Now the full number of those who believed were of one heart and soul, and no one said that any of the things that belonged to him was his own, but they had everything in common. All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of their possessions was their own, but they shared everything they had.
33 And with great power did the apostles give testimony of the resurrection of Jesus Christ our Lord; and great grace was in them all. And with great power the apostles were giving their testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was upon them all. With great power the apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And God’s grace was so powerfully at work in them all
34 For neither was there any one needy among them. For as many as were owners of lands or houses, sold them, and brought the price of the things they sold, There was not a needy person among them, for as many as were owners of lands or houses sold them and brought the proceeds of what was sold that there were no needy persons among them. For from time to time those who owned land or houses sold them, brought the money from the sales
35 And laid it down before the feet of the apostles. And distribution was made to every one, according as he had need. and laid it at the apostles’ feet, and it was distributed to each as any had need. and put it at the apostles’ feet, and it was distributed to anyone who had need.
36 And Joseph, who, by the apostles, was surnamed Barnabas, (which is, by interpretation, The son of consolation,) a Levite, a Cyprian born, Thus Joseph, who was also called by the apostles Barnabas (which means son of encouragement), a Levite, a native of Cyprus, Joseph, a Levite from Cyprus, whom the apostles called Barnabas (which means “son of encouragement”),
37 Having land, sold it, and brought the price, and laid it at the feet of the apostles. sold a field that belonged to him and brought the money and laid it at the apostles’ feet. sold a field he owned and brought the money and put it at the apostles’ feet.
