1 On the day of Pentecost all the believers were meeting together in one place. When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place.
2 Suddenly, there was a sound from heaven like the roaring of a mighty windstorm, and it filled the house where they were sitting. And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting.
3 Then, what looked like flames or tongues of fire appeared and settled on each of them. And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them.
4 And everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages, as the Holy Spirit gave them this ability. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.
5 At that time there were devout Jews from every nation living in Jerusalem. Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven. Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven.
6 When they heard the loud noise, everyone came running, and they were bewildered to hear their own languages being spoken by the believers. And at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one was hearing them speak in his own language. When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken.
7 They were completely amazed. “How can this be?” they exclaimed. “These people are all from Galilee, And they were amazed and astonished, saying, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? Utterly amazed, they asked: “Aren’t all these who are speaking Galileans?
8 and yet we hear them speaking in our own native languages! And how is it that we hear, each of us in his own native language? Then how is it that each of us hears them in our native language?
9 Here we are—Parthians, Medes, Elamites, people from Mesopotamia, Judea, Cappadocia, Pontus, the province of Asia, Parthians and Medes and Elamites and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,
10 Phrygia, Pamphylia, Egypt, and the areas of Libya around Cyrene, visitors from Rome Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome
11 (both Jews and converts to Judaism), Cretans, and Arabs. 12 They stood there amazed and perplexed. “What can this mean?” they asked each other. And all were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?” Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, “What does this mean?”
13 But others in the crowd ridiculed them, saying, “They’re just drunk, that’s all!” But others mocking said, “They are filled with new wine.” Some, however, made fun of them and said, “They have had too much wine.”
14 Then Peter stepped forward with the eleven other apostles and shouted to the crowd, “Listen carefully, all of you, fellow Jews and residents of Jerusalem! Make no mistake about this. But Peter, standing with the eleven, lifted up his voice and addressed them: “Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and give ear to my words. Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: “Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say.
15 These people are not drunk, as some of you are assuming. Nine o’clock in the morning is much too early for that. For these people are not drunk, as you suppose, since it is only the third hour of the day. These people are not drunk, as you suppose. It’s only nine in the morning!
16 No, what you see was predicted long ago by the prophet Joel: But this is what was uttered through the prophet Joel: No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel:
17 ‘In the last days,’ God says, ‘I will pour out my Spirit upon all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy. Your young men will see visions, and your old men will dream dreams. “‘And in the last days it shall be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams; “’In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams.
18 In those days I will pour out my Spirit even on my servants—men and women alike— and they will prophesy. even on my male servants and female servants in those days I will pour out my Spirit, and they shall prophesy. Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy.
19 And I will cause wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below— blood and fire and clouds of smoke. 22 “People of Israel, listen! God publicly endorsed Jesus the Nazarene by doing powerful miracles, wonders, and signs through him, as you well know. “Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a man attested to you by God with mighty works and wonders and signs that God did through him in your midst, as you yourselves know— “Fellow Israelites, listen to this: Jesus of Nazareth was a man accredited by God to you by miracles, wonders and signs, which God did among you through him, as you yourselves know.
23 But God knew what would happen, and his prearranged plan was carried out when Jesus was betrayed. With the help of lawless Gentiles, you nailed him to a cross and killed him. this Jesus, delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men. This man was handed over to you by God’s deliberate plan and foreknowledge; and you, with the help of wicked men, put him to death by nailing him to the cross.
24 But God released him from the horrors of death and raised him back to life, for death could not keep him in its grip. God raised him up, loosing the pangs of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by it. But God raised him from the dead, freeing him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on him.
25 King David said this about him: ‘I see that the LORD is always with me. I will not be shaken, for he is right beside me. For David says concerning him, “‘I saw the Lord always before me, for he is at my right hand that I may not be shaken; David said about him: “’I saw the Lord always before me. Because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken.
26 No wonder my heart is glad, and my tongue shouts his praises! My body rests in hope. therefore my heart was glad, and my tongue rejoiced; my flesh also will dwell in hope. Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will rest in hope,
27 For you will not leave my soul among the dead or allow your Holy One to rot in the grave. For you will not abandon my soul to Hades, or let your Holy One see corruption. because you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead, you will not let your holy one see decay.
28 You have shown me the way of life, and you will fill me with the joy of your presence.’ You have made known to me the paths of life; you will make me full of gladness with your presence.’ You have made known to me the paths of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence.’
29 “Dear brothers, think about this! You can be sure that the patriarch David wasn’t referring to himself, for he died and was buried, and his tomb is still here among us. “Brothers, I may say to you with confidence about the patriarch David that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. “Fellow Israelites, I can tell you confidently that the patriarch David died and was buried, and his tomb is here to this day.
30 But he was a prophet, and he knew God had promised with an oath that one of David’s own descendants would sit on his throne. 31 David was looking into the future and speaking of the Messiah’s resurrection. He was saying that God would not leave him among the dead or allow his body to rot in the grave. he foresaw and spoke about the resurrection of the Christ, that he was not abandoned to Hades, nor did his flesh see corruption. Seeing what was to come, he spoke of the resurrection of the Messiah, that he was not abandoned to the realm of the dead, nor did his body see decay.
32 “God raised Jesus from the dead, and we are all witnesses of this. This Jesus God raised up, and of that we all are witnesses. God has raised this Jesus to life, and we are all witnesses of it.
33 Now he is exalted to the place of highest honor in heaven, at God’s right hand. And the Father, as he had promised, gave him the Holy Spirit to pour out upon us, just as you see and hear today. Being therefore exalted at the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he has poured out this that you yourselves are seeing and hearing. Exalted to the right hand of God, he has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit and has poured out what you now see and hear.
34 For David himself never ascended into heaven, yet he said, ‘The LORD said to my Lord, “Sit in the place of honor at my right hand For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he himself says, “‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at my right hand, For David did not ascend to heaven, and yet he said, “’The Lord said to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand
35 until I humble your enemies, making them a footstool under your feet.”’ until I make your enemies your footstool.”’ until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet.|’
36 “So let everyone in Israel know for certain that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, to be both Lord and Messiah!” Let all the house of Israel therefore know for certain that God has made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified.” “Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Messiah.”
37 Peter’s words pierced their hearts, and they said to him and to the other apostles, “Brothers, what should we do?” Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?”
38 Peter replied, “Each of you must repent of your sins and turn to God, and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. Then you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
39 This promise is to you, to your children, and to those far away—all who have been called by the Lord our God.” For the promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself.” The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off—for all whom the Lord our God will call.”
40 Then Peter continued preaching for a long time, strongly urging all his listeners, “Save yourselves from this crooked generation!” And with many other words he bore witness and continued to exhort them, saying, “Save yourselves from this crooked generation.” With many other words he warned them; and he pleaded with them, “Save yourselves from this corrupt generation.”
41 Those who believed what Peter said were baptized and added to the church that day—about 3,000 in all. So those who received his word were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls. Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day.
42 All the believers devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, and to fellowship, and to sharing in meals (including the Lord’s Supper), and to prayer. And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. 45 They sold their property and possessions and shared the money with those in need. And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need. They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need.
46 They worshiped together at the Temple each day, met in homes for the Lord’s Supper, and shared their meals with great joy and generosity— And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts,
47 all the while praising God and enjoying the goodwill of all the people. And each day the Lord added to their fellowship those who were being saved. praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved. praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.
