1 The king settled into his palace, for the LORD gave him relief from all his enemies on all sides. Now when the king lived in his house and the LORD had given him rest from all his surrounding enemies, After the king was settled in his palace and the LORD had given him rest from all his enemies around him,
2 The king said to Nathan the prophet, |Look! I am living in a palace made from cedar, while the ark of God sits in the middle of a tent.| the king said to Nathan the prophet, “See now, I dwell in a house of cedar, but the ark of God dwells in a tent.” he said to Nathan the prophet, “Here I am, living in a house of cedar, while the ark of God remains in a tent.”
3 Nathan replied to the king, |You should go and do whatever you have in mind, for the LORD is with you.| And Nathan said to the king, “Go, do all that is in your heart, for the LORD is with you.” Nathan replied to the king, “Whatever you have in mind, go ahead and do it, for the LORD is with you.”
4 That night the LORD told Nathan, But that same night the word of the LORD came to Nathan, But that night the word of the LORD came to Nathan, saying:
5 |Go, tell my servant David: 'This is what the LORD says: Do you really intend to build a house for me to live in? “Go and tell my servant David, ‘Thus says the LORD: Would you build me a house to dwell in? “Go and tell my servant David, ‘This is what the LORD says: Are you the one to build me a house to dwell in?
6 I have not lived in a house from the time I brought the Israelites up from Egypt to the present day. Instead, I was traveling with them and living in a tent. I have not lived in a house since the day I brought up the people of Israel from Egypt to this day, but I have been moving about in a tent for my dwelling. I have not dwelt in a house from the day I brought the Israelites up out of Egypt to this day. I have been moving from place to place with a tent as my dwelling.
7 Wherever I moved among all the Israelites, I did not say to any of the leaders whom I appointed to care for my people Israel, |Why have you not built me a house made from cedar?|' In all places where I have moved with all the people of Israel, did I speak a word with any of the judges of Israel, whom I commanded to shepherd my people Israel, saying, “Why have you not built me a house of cedar?”’ Wherever I have moved with all the Israelites, did I ever say to any of their rulers whom I commanded to shepherd my people Israel, “Why have you not built me a house of cedar?|’
8 |So now, say this to my servant David: 'This is what the LORD of hosts says: I took you from the pasture and from your work as a shepherd to make you leader of my people Israel. Now, therefore, thus you shall say to my servant David, ‘Thus says the LORD of hosts, I took you from the pasture, from following the sheep, that you should be prince over my people Israel. “Now then, tell my servant David, ‘This is what the LORD Almighty says: I took you from the pasture, from tending the flock, and appointed you ruler over my people Israel.
9 I was with you wherever you went, and I defeated all your enemies before you. Now I will make you as famous as the great men of the earth. And I have been with you wherever you went and have cut off all your enemies from before you. And I will make for you a great name, like the name of the great ones of the earth. I have been with you wherever you have gone, and I have cut off all your enemies from before you. Now I will make your name great, like the names of the greatest men on earth.
10 I will establish a place for my people Israel and settle them there; they will live there and not be disturbed any more. Violent men will not oppress them again, as they did in the beginning And I will appoint a place for my people Israel and will plant them, so that they may dwell in their own place and be disturbed no more. And violent men shall afflict them no more, as formerly, And I will provide a place for my people Israel and will plant them so that they can have a home of their own and no longer be disturbed. Wicked people will not oppress them anymore, as they did at the beginning
11 and during the time when I appointed judges to lead my people Israel. Instead, I will give you relief from all your enemies. The LORD declares to you that he himself will build a dynastic house for you. from the time that I appointed judges over my people Israel. And I will give you rest from all your enemies. Moreover, the LORD declares to you that the LORD will make you a house. and have done ever since the time I appointed leaders over my people Israel. I will also give you rest from all your enemies. “’The LORD declares to you that the LORD himself will establish a house for you:
12 When the time comes for you to die, I will raise up your descendant, one of your own sons, to succeed you, and I will establish his kingdom. When your days are fulfilled and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring after you, who shall come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. When your days are over and you rest with your ancestors, I will raise up your offspring to succeed you, your own flesh and blood, and I will establish his kingdom.
13 He will build a house for my name, and I will make his dynasty permanent. He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. He is the one who will build a house for my Name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.
14 I will become his father and he will become my son. When he sins, I will correct him with the rod of men and with wounds inflicted by human beings. I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son. When he commits iniquity, I will discipline him with the rod of men, with the stripes of the sons of men, I will be his father, and he will be my son. When he does wrong, I will punish him with a rod wielded by men, with floggings inflicted by human hands.
15 But my loyal love will not be removed from him as I removed it from Saul, whom I removed from before you. but my steadfast love will not depart from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away from before you. But my love will never be taken away from him, as I took it away from Saul, whom I removed from before you.
16 Your house and your kingdom will stand before me permanently; your dynasty will be permanent.'| And your house and your kingdom shall be made sure forever before me. Your throne shall be established forever.’” Your house and your kingdom will endure forever before me; your throne will be established forever.’”
17 Nathan told David all these words that were revealed to him. In accordance with all these words, and in accordance with all this vision, Nathan spoke to David. Nathan reported to David all the words of this entire revelation.
18 King David went in, sat before the LORD, and said, |Who am I, O LORD God, and what is my family, that you should have brought me to this point? Then King David went in and sat before the LORD and said, “Who am I, O Lord GOD, and what is my house, that you have brought me thus far? Then King David went in and sat before the LORD, and he said: “Who am I, Sovereign LORD, and what is my family, that you have brought me this far?
19 And you didn't stop there, O LORD God! You have also spoken about the future of your servant's family. Is this your usual way of dealing with men, O LORD God? And yet this was a small thing in your eyes, O Lord GOD. You have spoken also of your servant’s house for a great while to come, and this is instruction for mankind, O Lord GOD! And as if this were not enough in your sight, Sovereign LORD, you have also spoken about the future of the house of your servant—and this decree, Sovereign LORD, is for a mere human!
20 What more can David say to you? You have given your servant special recognition, O LORD God! And what more can David say to you? For you know your servant, O Lord GOD! “What more can David say to you? For you know your servant, Sovereign LORD.
21 For the sake of your promise and according to your purpose you have done this great thing in order to reveal it to your servant. Because of your promise, and according to your own heart, you have brought about all this greatness, to make your servant know it. For the sake of your word and according to your will, you have done this great thing and made it known to your servant.
22 Therefore you are great, O LORD God, for there is none like you! There is no God besides you! What we have heard is true! Therefore you are great, O LORD God. For there is none like you, and there is no God besides you, according to all that we have heard with our ears. “How great you are, Sovereign LORD! There is no one like you, and there is no God but you, as we have heard with our own ears.
23 Who is like your people, Israel, a unique nation on the earth? Their God went to claim a nation for himself and to make a name for himself! You did great and awesome acts for your land, before your people whom you delivered for yourself from the Egyptian empire and its gods. And who is like your people Israel, the one nation on earth whom God went to redeem to be his people, making himself a name and doing for them great and awesome things by driving out before your people, whom you redeemed for yourself from Egypt, a nation and its gods? And who is like your people Israel—the one nation on earth that God went out to redeem as a people for himself, and to make a name for himself, and to perform great and awesome wonders by driving out nations and their gods from before your people, whom you redeemed from Egypt?
24 You made Israel your very own people for all time. You, O LORD, became their God. And you established for yourself your people Israel to be your people forever. And you, O LORD, became their God. You have established your people Israel as your very own forever, and you, LORD, have become their God.
25 So now, O LORD God, make this promise you have made about your servant and his family a permanent reality. Do as you promised, And now, O LORD God, confirm forever the word that you have spoken concerning your servant and concerning his house, and do as you have spoken. “And now, LORD God, keep forever the promise you have made concerning your servant and his house. Do as you promised,
26 so you may gain lasting fame, as people say, 'The LORD of hosts is God over Israel!' The dynasty of your servant David will be established before you, And your name will be magnified forever, saying, ‘The LORD of hosts is God over Israel,’ and the house of your servant David will be established before you. so that your name will be great forever. Then people will say, ‘The LORD Almighty is God over Israel!’ And the house of your servant David will be established in your sight.
27 for you, O LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, have told your servant, 'I will build you a dynastic house.' That is why your servant has had the courage to pray this prayer to you. For you, O LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, have made this revelation to your servant, saying, ‘I will build you a house.’ Therefore your servant has found courage to pray this prayer to you. “LORD Almighty, God of Israel, you have revealed this to your servant, saying, ‘I will build a house for you.’ So your servant has found courage to pray this prayer to you.
28 Now, O sovereign LORD, you are the true God! May your words prove to be true! You have made this good promise to your servant! And now, O Lord GOD, you are God, and your words are true, and you have promised this good thing to your servant. Sovereign LORD, you are God! Your covenant is trustworthy, and you have promised these good things to your servant.
29 Now be willing to bless your servant's dynasty so that it may stand permanently before you, for you, O sovereign LORD, have spoken. By your blessing may your servant's dynasty be blessed on into the future!| Now therefore may it please you to bless the house of your servant, so that it may continue forever before you. For you, O Lord GOD, have spoken, and with your blessing shall the house of your servant be blessed forever.” Now be pleased to bless the house of your servant, that it may continue forever in your sight; for you, Sovereign LORD, have spoken, and with your blessing the house of your servant will be blessed forever.”
