WHEN the king dwelt in his house, and the LORD had given him rest from all his enemies, | Now when the king lived in his house and the LORD had given him rest from all his surrounding enemies, | After the king was settled in his palace and the LORD had given him rest from all his enemies around him, |
The king said to Nathan the prophet, See now, I dwell in a house of cedar, but the ark of God dwells within curtains. | the king said to Nathan the prophet, “See now, I dwell in a house of cedar, but the ark of God dwells in a tent.” | he said to Nathan the prophet, “Here I am, living in a house of cedar, while the ark of God remains in a tent.” |
And Nathan said to the king, Go, do all that is in your heart; for the LORD is with you. | And Nathan said to the king, “Go, do all that is in your heart, for the LORD is with you.” | Nathan replied to the king, “Whatever you have in mind, go ahead and do it, for the LORD is with you.” |
And it came to pass that very night, the word of the LORD came to Nathan, the prophet, saying. | But that same night the word of the LORD came to Nathan, | But that night the word of the LORD came to Nathan, saying: |
Go and tell my servant David, Thus says the LORD, You shall not build me a house for me to dwell in; | “Go and tell my servant David, ‘Thus says the LORD: Would you build me a house to dwell in? | “Go and tell my servant David, ‘This is what the LORD says: Are you the one to build me a house to dwell in? |
Because I have not dwelt in a house since the day that I brought up the children of Israel out of Egypt, to this day, but I have moved in tents. | I have not lived in a house since the day I brought up the people of Israel from Egypt to this day, but I have been moving about in a tent for my dwelling. | I have not dwelt in a house from the day I brought the Israelites up out of Egypt to this day. I have been moving from place to place with a tent as my dwelling. |
In all the places where I have walked with all the children of Israel, have I spoken to any of those whom I commanded to feed my people Israel, saying, Why have you not built me a house of cedar? | In all places where I have moved with all the people of Israel, did I speak a word with any of the judges of Israel, whom I commanded to shepherd my people Israel, saying, “Why have you not built me a house of cedar?”’ | Wherever I have moved with all the Israelites, did I ever say to any of their rulers whom I commanded to shepherd my people Israel, “Why have you not built me a house of cedar?|’ |
Now therefore shall you say to my servant David, Thus says the LORD of hosts: I took you from the sheepfold, from following the sheep. to be the ruler over my people Israel; | Now, therefore, thus you shall say to my servant David, ‘Thus says the LORD of hosts, I took you from the pasture, from following the sheep, that you should be prince over my people Israel. | “Now then, tell my servant David, ‘This is what the LORD Almighty says: I took you from the pasture, from tending the flock, and appointed you ruler over my people Israel. |
And I have been with you wherever you went, and I have destroyed all your enemies from before you, and I will make for you a great name, like the name of the great men that are on the earth. | And I have been with you wherever you went and have cut off all your enemies from before you. And I will make for you a great name, like the name of the great ones of the earth. | I have been with you wherever you have gone, and I have cut off all your enemies from before you. Now I will make your name great, like the names of the greatest men on earth. |
Moreover I will appoint a place for my people Israel, and will plant them and make them to dwell in their own place in peace and be disturbed no more; neither shall wicked men enslave them any more, as formerly. | And I will appoint a place for my people Israel and will plant them, so that they may dwell in their own place and be disturbed no more. And violent men shall afflict them no more, as formerly, | And I will provide a place for my people Israel and will plant them so that they can have a home of their own and no longer be disturbed. Wicked people will not oppress them anymore, as they did at the beginning |
From the day that I commanded you to be a judge over my people Israel, I have given you rest from all your enemies. Also the LORD declares to you that he will make you a house. | from the time that I appointed judges over my people Israel. And I will give you rest from all your enemies. Moreover, the LORD declares to you that the LORD will make you a house. | and have done ever since the time I appointed leaders over my people Israel. I will also give you rest from all your enemies. “’The LORD declares to you that the LORD himself will establish a house for you: |
And when your days are fulfilled and you shall sleep with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring after you, who shall come out of your loins, and I will establish his kingdom. | When your days are fulfilled and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring after you, who shall come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. | When your days are over and you rest with your ancestors, I will raise up your offspring to succeed you, your own flesh and blood, and I will establish his kingdom. |
He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom for ever. | He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. | He is the one who will build a house for my Name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. |
I will be like a father to him and he shall be like a son to me. If he commit folly, I will chasten him with the rod of men and with the stripes of the children of men; | I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son. When he commits iniquity, I will discipline him with the rod of men, with the stripes of the sons of men, | I will be his father, and he will be my son. When he does wrong, I will punish him with a rod wielded by men, with floggings inflicted by human hands. |
But my mercy I will not take from him, as I took it from Saul who was king before you, and whom I put away from before me. | but my steadfast love will not depart from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away from before you. | But my love will never be taken away from him, as I took it away from Saul, whom I removed from before you. |
And your house and your kingdom shall be established for ever before me; your throne shall be established for ever. | And your house and your kingdom shall be made sure forever before me. Your throne shall be established forever.’” | Your house and your kingdom will endure forever before me; your throne will be established forever.’” |
According to all these words and according to all this vision, so did Nathan the prophet speak to David. | In accordance with all these words, and in accordance with all this vision, Nathan spoke to David. | Nathan reported to David all the words of this entire revelation. |
Then King David went in and sat before the LORD, and he said, Who am I, O LORD God? And what is my house, that thou hast elevated me to this place? | Then King David went in and sat before the LORD and said, “Who am I, O Lord GOD, and what is my house, that you have brought me thus far? | Then King David went in and sat before the LORD, and he said: “Who am I, Sovereign LORD, and what is my family, that you have brought me this far? |
And is this yet a small thing in thy sight, O LORD God, that thou hast spoken also concerning thy servant's descendants for a great while to come? Is this for the guidance of men, O LORD God? | And yet this was a small thing in your eyes, O Lord GOD. You have spoken also of your servant’s house for a great while to come, and this is instruction for mankind, O Lord GOD! | And as if this were not enough in your sight, Sovereign LORD, you have also spoken about the future of the house of your servant—and this decree, Sovereign LORD, is for a mere human! |
And what more can thy servant David say to thee? For thou knowest thy servant, O LORD God. | And what more can David say to you? For you know your servant, O Lord GOD! | “What more can David say to you? For you know your servant, Sovereign LORD. |
For thy word's sake and according to thine own heart hast thou done all these great things, to make thy servant know them. | Because of your promise, and according to your own heart, you have brought about all this greatness, to make your servant know it. | For the sake of your word and according to your will, you have done this great thing and made it known to your servant. |
Therefore thou art great, O LORD God; for there is none like thee, neither is there any God besides thee, according to all that we have heard with our ears. | Therefore you are great, O LORD God. For there is none like you, and there is no God besides you, according to all that we have heard with our ears. | “How great you are, Sovereign LORD! There is no one like you, and there is no God but you, as we have heard with our own ears. |
And is there a nation on the earth like thy people Israel, whom God saved to be a people for himself and to make him a name and to do for him great and notable deeds upon the earth, as he had done in former days for thy people whom thou savedst for thyself out of Egypt, a people whose God thou art? | And who is like your people Israel, the one nation on earth whom God went to redeem to be his people, making himself a name and doing for them great and awesome things by driving out before your people, whom you redeemed for yourself from Egypt, a nation and its gods? | And who is like your people Israel—the one nation on earth that God went out to redeem as a people for himself, and to make a name for himself, and to perform great and awesome wonders by driving out nations and their gods from before your people, whom you redeemed from Egypt? |
For thou hast established for thyself thy people Israel to be a people to thee for ever; and thou, O LORD, hast become their God. | And you established for yourself your people Israel to be your people forever. And you, O LORD, became their God. | You have established your people Israel as your very own forever, and you, LORD, have become their God. |
And now, O LORD God, the word that thou hast spoken concerning thy servant and concerning his house, confirm it for ever, and do as thou hast said. | And now, O LORD God, confirm forever the word that you have spoken concerning your servant and concerning his house, and do as you have spoken. | “And now, LORD God, keep forever the promise you have made concerning your servant and his house. Do as you promised, |
And let thy name be magnified for ever, and let everything be as thou hast said, O LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; and let the house of thy servant David be established before thee for ever. | And your name will be magnified forever, saying, ‘The LORD of hosts is God over Israel,’ and the house of your servant David will be established before you. | so that your name will be great forever. Then people will say, ‘The LORD Almighty is God over Israel!’ And the house of your servant David will be established in your sight. |
For thou, O LORD of hosts, God of Israel, hast revealed to thy servant, saying, I will build you a house; therefore thy servant has purposed in his heart to pray this prayer before thee. | For you, O LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, have made this revelation to your servant, saying, ‘I will build you a house.’ Therefore your servant has found courage to pray this prayer to you. | “LORD Almighty, God of Israel, you have revealed this to your servant, saying, ‘I will build a house for you.’ So your servant has found courage to pray this prayer to you. |
And now, O LORD God, thou art God and thy words are true, for thou hast promised this goodness unto thy servant; | And now, O Lord GOD, you are God, and your words are true, and you have promised this good thing to your servant. | Sovereign LORD, you are God! Your covenant is trustworthy, and you have promised these good things to your servant. |
Therefore now let it please thee to bless the house of thy servant, that it may continue for ever before thee; for thou, O LORD God, hast spoken it; and with thy blessing let the house of thy servant be blessed for ever. | Now therefore may it please you to bless the house of your servant, so that it may continue forever before you. For you, O Lord GOD, have spoken, and with your blessing shall the house of your servant be blessed forever.” | Now be pleased to bless the house of your servant, that it may continue forever in your sight; for you, Sovereign LORD, have spoken, and with your blessing the house of your servant will be blessed forever.” |
