1 And it came to pass when the king sat in his house, and the Lord had given him rest on every side from all his enemies, Now when the king lived in his house and the LORD had given him rest from all his surrounding enemies, After the king was settled in his palace and the LORD had given him rest from all his enemies around him,
2 He said to Nathan the prophet: Dost thou see that I dwell in a house of cedar, and the ark of God is lodged within skins? the king said to Nathan the prophet, “See now, I dwell in a house of cedar, but the ark of God dwells in a tent.” he said to Nathan the prophet, “Here I am, living in a house of cedar, while the ark of God remains in a tent.”
3 And Nathan said to the king: Go, do all that is in thy heart: because the Lord is with thee. And Nathan said to the king, “Go, do all that is in your heart, for the LORD is with you.” Nathan replied to the king, “Whatever you have in mind, go ahead and do it, for the LORD is with you.”
4 But it came to pass that night, that the word of the Lord came to Nathan, saying: But that same night the word of the LORD came to Nathan, But that night the word of the LORD came to Nathan, saying:
5 Go, and say to my servant David: Thus saith the Lord: Shalt thou build me a house to dwell in? “Go and tell my servant David, ‘Thus says the LORD: Would you build me a house to dwell in? “Go and tell my servant David, ‘This is what the LORD says: Are you the one to build me a house to dwell in?
6 Whereas I have not dwelt in a house from the day that I brought the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt even to this day: but have walked in a tabernacle, and in a tent. I have not lived in a house since the day I brought up the people of Israel from Egypt to this day, but I have been moving about in a tent for my dwelling. I have not dwelt in a house from the day I brought the Israelites up out of Egypt to this day. I have been moving from place to place with a tent as my dwelling.
7 In all the places that I have gone through with all the children of Israel, did ever I speak a word to any one of the tribes of Israel, whom I commanded to feed my people Israel, saying: Why have you not built me a house of cedar? In all places where I have moved with all the people of Israel, did I speak a word with any of the judges of Israel, whom I commanded to shepherd my people Israel, saying, “Why have you not built me a house of cedar?”’ Wherever I have moved with all the Israelites, did I ever say to any of their rulers whom I commanded to shepherd my people Israel, “Why have you not built me a house of cedar?|’
8 And now thus shalt thou speak to my servant David: Thus saith the Lord of hosts: I took thee out of the pastures from following the sheep to be ruler over my people Israel: Now, therefore, thus you shall say to my servant David, ‘Thus says the LORD of hosts, I took you from the pasture, from following the sheep, that you should be prince over my people Israel. “Now then, tell my servant David, ‘This is what the LORD Almighty says: I took you from the pasture, from tending the flock, and appointed you ruler over my people Israel.
9 And I have been with thee wheresoever thou hast walked, and have slain all thy enemies from before thy face: and I have made thee a great man, like unto the name of the great ones that are on the earth. And I have been with you wherever you went and have cut off all your enemies from before you. And I will make for you a great name, like the name of the great ones of the earth. I have been with you wherever you have gone, and I have cut off all your enemies from before you. Now I will make your name great, like the names of the greatest men on earth.
10 And I will appoint a place for my people Israel, and I will plant them, and they shall dwell therein, and shall be disturbed no more: neither shall the children of iniquity afflict them any more as they did before, And I will appoint a place for my people Israel and will plant them, so that they may dwell in their own place and be disturbed no more. And violent men shall afflict them no more, as formerly, And I will provide a place for my people Israel and will plant them so that they can have a home of their own and no longer be disturbed. Wicked people will not oppress them anymore, as they did at the beginning
11 From the day that I appointed judges over my people Israel: and I will give thee rest from all thy enemies. And the Lord foretelleth to thee, that the Lord will make thee a house. from the time that I appointed judges over my people Israel. And I will give you rest from all your enemies. Moreover, the LORD declares to you that the LORD will make you a house. and have done ever since the time I appointed leaders over my people Israel. I will also give you rest from all your enemies. “’The LORD declares to you that the LORD himself will establish a house for you:
12 And when thy days shall be fulfilled, and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, I will raise up thy seed after thee, which shall proceed out of thy bowels, and I will establish his kingdom. When your days are fulfilled and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring after you, who shall come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. When your days are over and you rest with your ancestors, I will raise up your offspring to succeed you, your own flesh and blood, and I will establish his kingdom.
13 He shall build a house to my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom for ever. He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. He is the one who will build a house for my Name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.
14 I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son: and if he commit any iniquity, I will correct him with the rod of men, and with the stripes of the children of men. I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son. When he commits iniquity, I will discipline him with the rod of men, with the stripes of the sons of men, I will be his father, and he will be my son. When he does wrong, I will punish him with a rod wielded by men, with floggings inflicted by human hands.
15 But my mercy I will not take away from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I removed from before my face. but my steadfast love will not depart from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away from before you. But my love will never be taken away from him, as I took it away from Saul, whom I removed from before you.
16 And thy house shall be faithful, and thy kingdom for ever before thy face, and thy throne shall be firm for ever. And your house and your kingdom shall be made sure forever before me. Your throne shall be established forever.’” Your house and your kingdom will endure forever before me; your throne will be established forever.’”
17 According to all these words and according to all this vision, so did Nathan speak to David. In accordance with all these words, and in accordance with all this vision, Nathan spoke to David. Nathan reported to David all the words of this entire revelation.
18 And David went in, and sat before the Lord, and said: Who am I, O Lord God, and what is my house, that thou hast brought me thus far? Then King David went in and sat before the LORD and said, “Who am I, O Lord GOD, and what is my house, that you have brought me thus far? Then King David went in and sat before the LORD, and he said: “Who am I, Sovereign LORD, and what is my family, that you have brought me this far?
19 But yet this hath seemed little in thy sight, O Lord God, unless thou didst also speak of the house of thy servant for a long time to come: for this is the law of Adam, O Lord God. And yet this was a small thing in your eyes, O Lord GOD. You have spoken also of your servant’s house for a great while to come, and this is instruction for mankind, O Lord GOD! And as if this were not enough in your sight, Sovereign LORD, you have also spoken about the future of the house of your servant—and this decree, Sovereign LORD, is for a mere human!
20 And what can David say more unto thee? for thou knowest thy servant, O Lord God: And what more can David say to you? For you know your servant, O Lord GOD! “What more can David say to you? For you know your servant, Sovereign LORD.
21 For thy word's sake, and according to thy own heart thou hast done all these great things, so that thou wouldst make it known to thy servant. Because of your promise, and according to your own heart, you have brought about all this greatness, to make your servant know it. For the sake of your word and according to your will, you have done this great thing and made it known to your servant.
22 Therefore thou art magnified, O Lord God, because there is none like to thee, neither is there any God besides thee, in all the things that we have heard with our ears. Therefore you are great, O LORD God. For there is none like you, and there is no God besides you, according to all that we have heard with our ears. “How great you are, Sovereign LORD! There is no one like you, and there is no God but you, as we have heard with our own ears.
23 And what nation is there upon earth, as thy people Israel, whom God went to redeem for a people to himself, and to make him a name, and to do for them great and terrible things, upon the earth, before the face of thy people, whom thou redeemedst to thyself out of Egypt, from the nations and their gods. And who is like your people Israel, the one nation on earth whom God went to redeem to be his people, making himself a name and doing for them great and awesome things by driving out before your people, whom you redeemed for yourself from Egypt, a nation and its gods? And who is like your people Israel—the one nation on earth that God went out to redeem as a people for himself, and to make a name for himself, and to perform great and awesome wonders by driving out nations and their gods from before your people, whom you redeemed from Egypt?
24 For thou hast confirmed to thyself thy people Israel to be an everlasting people: and thou, O Lord God, art become their God. And you established for yourself your people Israel to be your people forever. And you, O LORD, became their God. You have established your people Israel as your very own forever, and you, LORD, have become their God.
25 And now, O Lord God, raise up for ever the word that thou hast spoken, concerning thy servant and concerning his house: and do as thou hast spoken, And now, O LORD God, confirm forever the word that you have spoken concerning your servant and concerning his house, and do as you have spoken. “And now, LORD God, keep forever the promise you have made concerning your servant and his house. Do as you promised,
26 That thy name may be magnified for ever, and it may be said: The Lord of hosts is God over Israel. And the house of thy servant David shall be established before the Lord. And your name will be magnified forever, saying, ‘The LORD of hosts is God over Israel,’ and the house of your servant David will be established before you. so that your name will be great forever. Then people will say, ‘The LORD Almighty is God over Israel!’ And the house of your servant David will be established in your sight.
27 Because thou, O Lord of hosts, God of Israel, hast revealed to the ear of thy servant, saying: I will build thee a house: therefore hath thy servant found in his heart to pray this prayer to thee. For you, O LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, have made this revelation to your servant, saying, ‘I will build you a house.’ Therefore your servant has found courage to pray this prayer to you. “LORD Almighty, God of Israel, you have revealed this to your servant, saying, ‘I will build a house for you.’ So your servant has found courage to pray this prayer to you.
28 And now, O Lord God, thou art God, and thy words shall be true: for thou hast spoken to thy servant these good things. And now, O Lord GOD, you are God, and your words are true, and you have promised this good thing to your servant. Sovereign LORD, you are God! Your covenant is trustworthy, and you have promised these good things to your servant.
29 And now begin, and bless the house of thy servant, that it may endure for ever before thee: because thou, O Lord God, hast spoken it, and with thy blessing let the house of thy servant be blessed for ever. Now therefore may it please you to bless the house of your servant, so that it may continue forever before you. For you, O Lord GOD, have spoken, and with your blessing shall the house of your servant be blessed forever.” Now be pleased to bless the house of your servant, that it may continue forever in your sight; for you, Sovereign LORD, have spoken, and with your blessing the house of your servant will be blessed forever.”
