And behold, a man of God came out of Judah by the word of the LORD to Bethel. Jeroboam was standing by the altar to make offerings. | A man of God came from Judah to Bethel by the word of the LORD, while Jeroboam was standing at the altar to burn incense. | By the word of the LORD a man of God came from Judah to Bethel, as Jeroboam was standing by the altar to make an offering. |
And the man cried against the altar by the word of the LORD and said, “O altar, altar, thus says the LORD: ‘Behold, a son shall be born to the house of David, Josiah by name, and he shall sacrifice on you the priests of the high places who make offerings on you, and human bones shall be burned on you.’” | He cried out against the altar by the word of the LORD: “Altar, altar, thus says the LORD: A child shall be born to the house of David, Josiah by name, who shall slaughter upon you the priests of the high places who burn incense upon you, and they shall burn human bones upon you.” | By the word of the LORD he cried out against the altar: “Altar, altar! This is what the LORD says: ‘A son named Josiah will be born to the house of David. On you he will sacrifice the priests of the high places who make offerings here, and human bones will be burned on you.’” |
And he gave a sign the same day, saying, “This is the sign that the LORD has spoken: ‘Behold, the altar shall be torn down, and the ashes that are on it shall be poured out.’” | He also gave a sign that same day and said: “This is the sign that the LORD has spoken: The altar shall be torn apart and the ashes on it shall be scattered.” | That same day the man of God gave a sign: “This is the sign the LORD has declared: The altar will be split apart and the ashes on it will be poured out.” |
And when the king heard the saying of the man of God, which he cried against the altar at Bethel, Jeroboam stretched out his hand from the altar, saying, “Seize him.” And his hand, which he stretched out against him, dried up, so that he could not draw it back to himself. | When the king heard the word of the man of God which he was crying out against the altar in Bethel, Jeroboam stretched forth his hand from the altar and said, “Seize him!” But the hand he stretched forth against him withered, so that he could not draw it back. | When King Jeroboam heard what the man of God cried out against the altar at Bethel, he stretched out his hand from the altar and said, “Seize him!” But the hand he stretched out toward the man shriveled up, so that he could not pull it back. |
The altar also was torn down, and the ashes poured out from the altar, according to the sign that the man of God had given by the word of the LORD. | (The altar was torn apart and the ashes from the altar were scattered, in accordance with the sign the man of God gave by the word of the LORD.) | Also, the altar was split apart and its ashes poured out according to the sign given by the man of God by the word of the LORD. |
And the king said to the man of God, “Entreat now the favor of the LORD your God, and pray for me, that my hand may be restored to me.” And the man of God entreated the LORD, and the king’s hand was restored to him and became as it was before. | Then the king said to the man of God, “Entreat the LORD, your God, and intercede for me that my hand may be restored.” So the man of God entreated the LORD, and the king’s hand was restored as it was before. | Then the king said to the man of God, “Intercede with the LORD your God and pray for me that my hand may be restored.” So the man of God interceded with the LORD, and the king’s hand was restored and became as it was before. |
And the king said to the man of God, “Come home with me, and refresh yourself, and I will give you a reward.” | The king told the man of God, “Come with me to the house for some refreshment so that I may give you a present.” | The king said to the man of God, “Come home with me for a meal, and I will give you a gift.” |
And the man of God said to the king, “If you give me half your house, I will not go in with you. And I will not eat bread or drink water in this place, | The man of God said to the king, “If you gave me half your palace, I would not go with you, nor eat bread or drink water in this place. | But the man of God answered the king, “Even if you were to give me half your possessions, I would not go with you, nor would I eat bread or drink water here. |
for so was it commanded me by the word of the LORD, saying, ‘You shall neither eat bread nor drink water nor return by the way that you came.’” | For I was instructed by the word of the LORD: Do not eat bread or drink water, and do not return by the way you came.” | For I was commanded by the word of the LORD: ‘You must not eat bread or drink water or return by the way you came.’” |
So he went another way and did not return by the way that he came to Bethel. | So he departed by another road and did not go back the way he had come to Bethel. | So he took another road and did not return by the way he had come to Bethel. |
Now an old prophet lived in Bethel. And his sons came and told him all that the man of God had done that day in Bethel. They also told to their father the words that he had spoken to the king. | There was an old prophet living in Bethel, whose son came and told him all that the man of God had done that day in Bethel. When his sons repeated to their father the words the man of God had spoken to the king, | Now there was a certain old prophet living in Bethel, whose sons came and told him all that the man of God had done there that day. They also told their father what he had said to the king. |
And their father said to them, “Which way did he go?” And his sons showed him the way that the man of God who came from Judah had gone. | the father asked them, “Which way did he go?” So his sons pointed out to him the road taken by the man of God who had come from Judah. | Their father asked them, “Which way did he go?” And his sons showed him which road the man of God from Judah had taken. |
And he said to his sons, “Saddle the donkey for me.” So they saddled the donkey for him and he mounted it. | Then he said to his sons, “Saddle the donkey for me.” When they had saddled it, he mounted | So he said to his sons, “Saddle the donkey for me.” And when they had saddled the donkey for him, he mounted it |
And he went after the man of God and found him sitting under an oak. And he said to him, “Are you the man of God who came from Judah?” And he said, “I am.” | and followed the man of God, whom he found seated under a terebinth. When he asked him, “Are you the man of God who came from Judah?” he answered, “Yes.” | and rode after the man of God. He found him sitting under an oak tree and asked, “Are you the man of God who came from Judah?” “I am,” he replied. |
Then he said to him, “Come home with me and eat bread.” | Then he said, “Come home with me and have some bread.” | So the prophet said to him, “Come home with me and eat.” |
And he said, “I may not return with you, or go in with you, neither will I eat bread nor drink water with you in this place, | “I cannot return with you or go with you, and I cannot eat bread or drink water with you in this place,” he answered, | The man of God said, “I cannot turn back and go with you, nor can I eat bread or drink water with you in this place. |
for it was said to me by the word of the LORD, ‘You shall neither eat bread nor drink water there, nor return by the way that you came.’” | “for I was told by the word of the LORD: You shall not eat bread or drink water there, and do not go back the way you came.” | I have been told by the word of the LORD: ‘You must not eat bread or drink water there or return by the way you came.’” |
And he said to him, “I also am a prophet as you are, and an angel spoke to me by the word of the LORD, saying, ‘Bring him back with you into your house that he may eat bread and drink water.’” But he lied to him. | But he said to him, “I, too, am a prophet like you, and an angel told me by the word of the LORD: Bring him back with you to your house to eat bread and drink water.” But he was lying to him. | The old prophet answered, “I too am a prophet, as you are. And an angel said to me by the word of the LORD: ‘Bring him back with you to your house so that he may eat bread and drink water.’” (But he was lying to him.) |
So he went back with him and ate bread in his house and drank water. | So he went back with him, and ate bread and drank water in his house. | So the man of God returned with him and ate and drank in his house. |
And as they sat at the table, the word of the LORD came to the prophet who had brought him back. | But while they were sitting at table, the word of the LORD came to the prophet who had brought him back, | While they were sitting at the table, the word of the LORD came to the old prophet who had brought him back. |
And he cried to the man of God who came from Judah, “Thus says the LORD, ‘Because you have disobeyed the word of the LORD and have not kept the command that the LORD your God commanded you, | and he cried out to the man of God who had come from Judah: “Thus says the LORD: Because you rebelled against the charge of the LORD and did not keep the command which the LORD, your God, gave you, | He cried out to the man of God who had come from Judah, “This is what the LORD says: ‘You have defied the word of the LORD and have not kept the command the LORD your God gave you. |
but have come back and have eaten bread and drunk water in the place of which he said to you, “Eat no bread and drink no water,” your body shall not come to the tomb of your fathers.’” | but returned and ate bread and drank water in the place where he told you, Do not eat bread or drink water, your corpse shall not be brought to the grave of your ancestors.” | You came back and ate bread and drank water in the place where he told you not to eat or drink. Therefore your body will not be buried in the tomb of your ancestors.’” |
And after he had eaten bread and drunk, he saddled the donkey for the prophet whom he had brought back. | After he had eaten bread and drunk, they saddled for him the donkey that belonged to the prophet who had brought him back, | When the man of God had finished eating and drinking, the prophet who had brought him back saddled his donkey for him. |
And as he went away a lion met him on the road and killed him. And his body was thrown in the road, and the donkey stood beside it; the lion also stood beside the body. | and he set out. But a lion met him on the road, and killed him. His body lay sprawled on the road, and the donkey remained standing by it, and so did the lion. | As he went on his way, a lion met him on the road and killed him, and his body was left lying on the road, with both the donkey and the lion standing beside it. |
And behold, men passed by and saw the body thrown in the road and the lion standing by the body. And they came and told it in the city where the old prophet lived. | Some passersby saw the body lying in the road, with the lion standing beside it, and carried the news to the city where the old prophet lived. | Some people who passed by saw the body lying there, with the lion standing beside the body, and they went and reported it in the city where the old prophet lived. |
And when the prophet who had brought him back from the way heard of it, he said, “It is the man of God who disobeyed the word of the LORD; therefore the LORD has given him to the lion, which has torn him and killed him, according to the word that the LORD spoke to him.” | On hearing it, the prophet who had brought him back from his journey said: “It is the man of God who rebelled against the charge of the LORD. The LORD has delivered him to a lion, which mangled and killed him, according to the word which the LORD had spoken to him.” | When the prophet who had brought him back from his journey heard of it, he said, “It is the man of God who defied the word of the LORD. The LORD has given him over to the lion, which has mauled him and killed him, as the word of the LORD had warned him.” |
And he said to his sons, “Saddle the donkey for me.” And they saddled it. | Then he said to his sons, “Saddle the donkey for me,” and they saddled it. | The prophet said to his sons, “Saddle the donkey for me,” and they did so. |
And he went and found his body thrown in the road, and the donkey and the lion standing beside the body. The lion had not eaten the body or torn the donkey. | He went off and found the body sprawled on the road with the donkey and the lion standing beside it. The lion had not eaten the body nor had it harmed the donkey. | Then he went out and found the body lying on the road, with the donkey and the lion standing beside it. The lion had neither eaten the body nor mauled the donkey. |
And the prophet took up the body of the man of God and laid it on the donkey and brought it back to the city to mourn and to bury him. | The prophet lifted up the body of the man of God and put it on the donkey, and brought him back to the city to mourn and to bury him. | So the prophet picked up the body of the man of God, laid it on the donkey, and brought it back to his own city to mourn for him and bury him. |
And he laid the body in his own grave. And they mourned over him, saying, “Alas, my brother!” | He laid the man’s body in his own grave, and they mourned over it: “Alas, my brother!” | Then he laid the body in his own tomb, and they mourned over him and said, “Alas, my brother!” |
And after he had buried him, he said to his sons, “When I die, bury me in the grave in which the man of God is buried; lay my bones beside his bones. | After he had buried him, he said to his sons, “When I die, bury me in the grave where the man of God is buried. Lay my bones beside his. | After burying him, he said to his sons, “When I die, bury me in the grave where the man of God is buried; lay my bones beside his bones. |
For the saying that he called out by the word of the LORD against the altar in Bethel and against all the houses of the high places that are in the cities of Samaria shall surely come to pass.” | For the word which he proclaimed by the word of the LORD against the altar in Bethel and against all the temples on the high places in the cities of Samaria shall certainly come to pass.” | For the message he declared by the word of the LORD against the altar in Bethel and against all the shrines on the high places in the towns of Samaria will certainly come true.” |
After this thing Jeroboam did not turn from his evil way, but made priests for the high places again from among all the people. Any who would, he ordained to be priests of the high places. | Even after this, Jeroboam did not turn from his evil way, but again made priests for the high places from among the common people. Whoever desired it was installed as a priest of the high places. | Even after this, Jeroboam did not change his evil ways, but once more appointed priests for the high places from all sorts of people. Anyone who wanted to become a priest he consecrated for the high places. |
And this thing became sin to the house of Jeroboam, so as to cut it off and to destroy it from the face of the earth. | This is the account of the sin of the house of Jeroboam for which it was to be cut off and destroyed from the face of the earth. | This was the sin of the house of Jeroboam that led to its downfall and to its destruction from the face of the earth. |
