1	And behold, a man of God went from Judah by the word of YHWH to Bethel. And Jeroboam stood by the altar to burn incense.	And behold, a man of God came out of Judah by the word of the LORD to Bethel. Jeroboam was standing by the altar to make offerings.	By the word of the LORD a man of God came from Judah to Bethel, as Jeroboam was standing by the altar to make an offering.
2	And he cried out against the altar by the word of YHWH, and he said, “O altar, O altar, thus says YHWH: ‘Behold, a child shall be born to the house of David, Josiah by name, and he shall sacrifice on you the priests of the high places who burn incense on you, and bones of man shall be burned on you.’”	And the man cried against the altar by the word of the LORD and said, “O altar, altar, thus says the LORD: ‘Behold, a son shall be born to the house of David, Josiah by name, and he shall sacrifice on you the priests of the high places who make offerings on you, and human bones shall be burned on you.’”	By the word of the LORD he cried out against the altar: “Altar, altar! This is what the LORD says: ‘A son named Josiah will be born to the house of David. On you he will sacrifice the priests of the high places who make offerings here, and human bones will be burned on you.’”
3	And he gave that day a sign, saying, “This is the sign that YHWH has spoken: ‘Behold, the altar shall be split apart, and the ashes shall be poured out that are on it.’”	And he gave a sign the same day, saying, “This is the sign that the LORD has spoken: ‘Behold, the altar shall be torn down, and the ashes that are on it shall be poured out.’”	That same day the man of God gave a sign: “This is the sign the LORD has declared: The altar will be split apart and the ashes on it will be poured out.”
4	And it came to pass, when the king heard the saying of the man of God who cried out against the altar in Bethel, that Jeroboam stretched out his hand from the altar, saying, “Seize him!” And his hand withered that he stretched out toward him, so that he could not pull it back to himself.	And when the king heard the saying of the man of God, which he cried against the altar at Bethel, Jeroboam stretched out his hand from the altar, saying, “Seize him.” And his hand, which he stretched out against him, dried up, so that he could not draw it back to himself.	When King Jeroboam heard what the man of God cried out against the altar at Bethel, he stretched out his hand from the altar and said, “Seize him!” But the hand he stretched out toward the man shriveled up, so that he could not pull it back.
5	And the altar was split apart, and the ashes poured out from the altar, according to the sign that the man of God had given by the word of YHWH.	The altar also was torn down, and the ashes poured out from the altar, according to the sign that the man of God had given by the word of the LORD.	Also, the altar was split apart and its ashes poured out according to the sign given by the man of God by the word of the LORD.
6	And the king answered and said to the man of God, “Entreat, please, the favor of YHWH your God and pray for me, that my hand may be restored to me.” And entreated the man of God before the face of YHWH, and the hand of the king was restored to him, and it was as at first.	And the king said to the man of God, “Entreat now the favor of the LORD your God, and pray for me, that my hand may be restored to me.” And the man of God entreated the LORD, and the king’s hand was restored to him and became as it was before.	Then the king said to the man of God, “Intercede with the LORD your God and pray for me that my hand may be restored.” So the man of God interceded with the LORD, and the king’s hand was restored and became as it was before.
7	And the king said to the man of God, “Come in with me to the house and refresh yourself, and I will give to you a reward.”	And the king said to the man of God, “Come home with me, and refresh yourself, and I will give you a reward.”	The king said to the man of God, “Come home with me for a meal, and I will give you a gift.”
8	And the man of God said to the king, “If you were to give to me half of your house, I would not go in with you, nor would I eat bread nor drink water in this place.	And the man of God said to the king, “If you give me half your house, I will not go in with you. And I will not eat bread or drink water in this place,	But the man of God answered the king, “Even if you were to give me half your possessions, I would not go with you, nor would I eat bread or drink water here.
9	For so it was commanded me by the word of YHWH, saying, ‘You shall not eat bread, nor drink water, nor return by the same way that you came.’”	for so was it commanded me by the word of the LORD, saying, ‘You shall neither eat bread nor drink water nor return by the way that you came.’”	For I was commanded by the word of the LORD: ‘You must not eat bread or drink water or return by the way you came.’”
10	And he went another way and did not return by the way that he had come in to Bethel.	So he went another way and did not return by the way that he came to Bethel.	So he took another road and did not return by the way he had come to Bethel.
11	And an old prophet dwelt in Bethel, and his sons came in and told him all the works that the man of God had done that day in Bethel—the words that he had spoken to the king. And they told their father.	Now an old prophet lived in Bethel. And his sons came and told him all that the man of God had done that day in Bethel. They also told to their father the words that he had spoken to the king.	Now there was a certain old prophet living in Bethel, whose sons came and told him all that the man of God had done there that day. They also told their father what he had said to the king.
12	And their father said to them, “Where is this—the way he has gone?” For his sons showed him the way that the man of God had gone, who came from Judah.	And their father said to them, “Which way did he go?” And his sons showed him the way that the man of God who came from Judah had gone.	Their father asked them, “Which way did he go?” And his sons showed him which road the man of God from Judah had taken.
13	And he said to his sons, “Saddle for me the donkey.” And they saddled for him the donkey, and he rode on it,	And he said to his sons, “Saddle the donkey for me.” So they saddled the donkey for him and he mounted it.	So he said to his sons, “Saddle the donkey for me.” And when they had saddled the donkey for him, he mounted it
14	and he went after the man of God and found him sitting under the oak. And he said to him, “Are you the man of God who came from Judah?” And he said, “I am.”	And he went after the man of God and found him sitting under an oak. And he said to him, “Are you the man of God who came from Judah?” And he said, “I am.”	and rode after the man of God. He found him sitting under an oak tree and asked, “Are you the man of God who came from Judah?” “I am,” he replied.
15	And he said to him, “Come with me to the house and eat bread.”	Then he said to him, “Come home with me and eat bread.”	So the prophet said to him, “Come home with me and eat.”
16	And he said, “I cannot return with you or go in with you, nor can I eat bread nor drink water with you in this place.	And he said, “I may not return with you, or go in with you, neither will I eat bread nor drink water with you in this place,	The man of God said, “I cannot turn back and go with you, nor can I eat bread or drink water with you in this place.
17	For I have been told by the word of YHWH, ‘You shall not eat bread, nor drink there water, nor return by going the way that you came in.’”	for it was said to me by the word of the LORD, ‘You shall neither eat bread nor drink water there, nor return by the way that you came.’”	I have been told by the word of the LORD: ‘You must not eat bread or drink water there or return by the way you came.’”
18	And He said to him, “I am also a prophet as you are, and an angel spoke to me by the word of YHWH, saying, ‘Bring him back with you to your house, that he may eat bread and drink water.’” He was lying to him.	And he said to him, “I also am a prophet as you are, and an angel spoke to me by the word of the LORD, saying, ‘Bring him back with you into your house that he may eat bread and drink water.’” But he lied to him.	The old prophet answered, “I too am a prophet, as you are. And an angel said to me by the word of the LORD: ‘Bring him back with you to your house so that he may eat bread and drink water.’” (But he was lying to him.)
19	And he went back with him and ate bread in his house, and he drank water.	So he went back with him and ate bread in his house and drank water.	So the man of God returned with him and ate and drank in his house.
20	And it came to pass as they sat at the table, that the word of YHWH came to the prophet who had brought him back,	And as they sat at the table, the word of the LORD came to the prophet who had brought him back.	While they were sitting at the table, the word of the LORD came to the old prophet who had brought him back.
21	and he cried out to the man of God who came from Judah, saying, “Thus says YHWH: ‘Because that you have disobeyed the word of YHWH and have not kept the commandment that YHWH your God commanded you—	And he cried to the man of God who came from Judah, “Thus says the LORD, ‘Because you have disobeyed the word of the LORD and have not kept the command that the LORD your God commanded you,	He cried out to the man of God who had come from Judah, “This is what the LORD says: ‘You have defied the word of the LORD and have not kept the command the LORD your God gave you.
22	and you returned and ate bread and drank water in the place of which He said to you: You shall not eat bread, and you shall not drink water—your corpse shall not come to the tomb of your fathers.’”	but have come back and have eaten bread and drunk water in the place of which he said to you, “Eat no bread and drink no water,” your body shall not come to the tomb of your fathers.’”	You came back and ate bread and drank water in the place where he told you not to eat or drink. Therefore your body will not be buried in the tomb of your ancestors.’”
23	And it came to pass, after he had eaten bread and after he had drunk, that he saddled for him the donkey, for the prophet whom he had brought back.	And after he had eaten bread and drunk, he saddled the donkey for the prophet whom he had brought back.	When the man of God had finished eating and drinking, the prophet who had brought him back saddled his donkey for him.
24	And he went, and a lion met him on the road and killed him, and his corpse was thrown on the road. And the donkey stood by it, and the lion stood by the corpse.	And as he went away a lion met him on the road and killed him. And his body was thrown in the road, and the donkey stood beside it; the lion also stood beside the body.	As he went on his way, a lion met him on the road and killed him, and his body was left lying on the road, with both the donkey and the lion standing beside it.
25	And behold, men passed by and saw the corpse thrown on the road and the lion standing by the corpse. And they went and told it in the city in which the old prophet dwelt.	And behold, men passed by and saw the body thrown in the road and the lion standing by the body. And they came and told it in the city where the old prophet lived.	Some people who passed by saw the body lying there, with the lion standing beside the body, and they went and reported it in the city where the old prophet lived.
26	And the prophet who had brought him back from the way heard it, and he said, “It is the man of God, who was disobedient to the word of YHWH. And YHWH has delivered him to the lion, and it has torn him and killed him according to the word of YHWH that He spoke to him.”	And when the prophet who had brought him back from the way heard of it, he said, “It is the man of God who disobeyed the word of the LORD; therefore the LORD has given him to the lion, which has torn him and killed him, according to the word that the LORD spoke to him.”	When the prophet who had brought him back from his journey heard of it, he said, “It is the man of God who defied the word of the LORD. The LORD has given him over to the lion, which has mauled him and killed him, as the word of the LORD had warned him.”
27	And he spoke to his sons, saying, “Saddle for me the donkey.” And they saddled it.	And he said to his sons, “Saddle the donkey for me.” And they saddled it.	The prophet said to his sons, “Saddle the donkey for me,” and they did so.
28	And he went and found his corpse thrown on the road, and the donkey and the lion standing by the corpse. The lion had not eaten the corpse, nor torn into pieces the donkey.	And he went and found his body thrown in the road, and the donkey and the lion standing beside the body. The lion had not eaten the body or torn the donkey.	Then he went out and found the body lying on the road, with the donkey and the lion standing beside it. The lion had neither eaten the body nor mauled the donkey.
29	And the prophet took up the corpse of the man of God and laid it on the donkey, and he brought it back. And the old prophet came to the city to mourn and to bury him.	And the prophet took up the body of the man of God and laid it on the donkey and brought it back to the city to mourn and to bury him.	So the prophet picked up the body of the man of God, laid it on the donkey, and brought it back to his own city to mourn for him and bury him.
30	And he laid the corpse in his own tomb, and they mourned over him: “Alas, my brother!”	And he laid the body in his own grave. And they mourned over him, saying, “Alas, my brother!”	Then he laid the body in his own tomb, and they mourned over him and said, “Alas, my brother!”
31	And it was after he had buried him, that he spoke to his sons, saying, “When I am dead, bury me in the tomb in which the man of God is buried. Beside his bones lay my bones.	And after he had buried him, he said to his sons, “When I die, bury me in the grave in which the man of God is buried; lay my bones beside his bones.	After burying him, he said to his sons, “When I die, bury me in the grave where the man of God is buried; lay my bones beside his bones.
32	For the word will surely come to pass that he cried out by the word of YHWH against the altar that is in Bethel, and against all the shrines on the high places which are in the cities of Samaria.”	For the saying that he called out by the word of the LORD against the altar in Bethel and against all the houses of the high places that are in the cities of Samaria shall surely come to pass.”	For the message he declared by the word of the LORD against the altar in Bethel and against all the shrines on the high places in the towns of Samaria will certainly come true.”
33	After this matter, Jeroboam did not turn from his evil way, and he turned back and made from the ends of the people priests for the high places. The desiring one would fill his hand and he would become one of the priests of the high places.	After this thing Jeroboam did not turn from his evil way, but made priests for the high places again from among all the people. Any who would, he ordained to be priests of the high places.	Even after this, Jeroboam did not change his evil ways, but once more appointed priests for the high places from all sorts of people. Anyone who wanted to become a priest he consecrated for the high places.
34	And this thing became sin of the house of Jeroboam, even to cut it off and destroy it from the face of the earth.	And this thing became sin to the house of Jeroboam, so as to cut it off and to destroy it from the face of the earth.	This was the sin of the house of Jeroboam that led to its downfall and to its destruction from the face of the earth.
