New King James VersionInternational Standard Version
Now it happened on the second Sabbath after the first that He went through the grainfields. And His disciples plucked the heads of grain and ate them, rubbing them in their hands.1One time Jesus was walking through some grain fields on a Sabbath. His disciples were picking the heads of grain, rubbing them in their hands, and eating them.
And some of the Pharisees said to them, “Why are you doing what is not lawful to do on the Sabbath?”2Some of the Pharisees asked, "Why are you doing what isn't lawful on Sabbath days?"
But Jesus answering them said, “Have you not even read this, what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him:3Jesus answered them, "Haven't you read what David did when he and his companions became hungry?
how he went into the house of God, took and ate the showbread, and also gave some to those with him, which is not lawful for any but the priests to eat?”4How was it that he went into the house of God, took the Bread of the Presence and ate it, which was not lawful for anyone but the priests to eat, and then gave some of it to his companions?"
And He said to them, “The Son of Man is also Lord of the Sabbath.”5Then he told them, "The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath."
Now it happened on another Sabbath, also, that He entered the synagogue and taught. And a man was there whose right hand was withered.6Once, on another Sabbath, Jesus went into a synagogue and began teaching. A man whose right hand was paralyzed was there.
So the scribes and Pharisees watched Him closely, whether He would heal on the Sabbath, that they might find an accusation against Him.7The scribes and the Pharisees were watching Jesus closely to see whether he would heal on the Sabbath, in order to find a way of accusing him of doing something wrong.
But He knew their thoughts, and said to the man who had the withered hand, “Arise and stand here.” And he arose and stood.8But Jesus knew what they were thinking. So he told the man with the paralyzed hand, "Get up, and stand in the middle of the synagogue." So he got up and stood there.
Then Jesus said to them, “I will ask you one thing: Is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do evil, to save life or to destroy?”9Then Jesus asked them, "I ask you, is it lawful to do good or to do evil on the Sabbath, to save a life or to destroy it?"
And when He had looked around at them all, He said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” And he did so, and his hand was restored as whole as the other.10He looked around at all of them and then told the man, "Hold out your hand." The man did so, and his hand was restored to health.
But they were filled with rage, and discussed with one another what they might do to Jesus.11The others were furious and began to discuss with each other what they could do to Jesus.
Now it came to pass in those days that He went out to the mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God.12Now it was in those days that Jesus went to a mountain to pray, and he spent the whole night in prayer to God.
And when it was day, He called His disciples to Himself; and from them He chose twelve whom He also named apostles:13When daylight came, he called his disciples and chose twelve of them, whom he also called apostles:
Simon, whom He also named Peter, and Andrew his brother; James and John; Philip and Bartholomew;14Simon (whom he named Peter), his brother Andrew, James, John, Philip, Bartholomew,
Matthew and Thomas; James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon called the Zealot;15Matthew, Thomas, James (the son of Alphaeus), Simon (who was called the Zealot),
Judas the son of James, and Judas Iscariot who also became a traitor.16Judas (the son of James), and Judas Iscariot (who became a traitor).
And He came down with them and stood on a level place with a crowd of His disciples and a great multitude of people from all Judea and Jerusalem, and from the seacoast of Tyre and Sidon, who came to hear Him and be healed of their diseases,17Then Jesus came down with them and stood on a level place, along with many of his disciples and a large gathering of people from all over Judea, Jerusalem, and the seacoast of Tyre and Sidon.
as well as those who were tormented with unclean spirits. And they were healed.18They had come to hear him and to be healed of their diseases. Even those who were being tormented by unclean spirits were being healed.
And the whole multitude sought to touch Him, for power went out from Him and healed them all.19The entire crowd was trying to touch him, because power was coming out from him and healing all of them.
Then He lifted up His eyes toward His disciples, and said: “Blessed are you poor, For yours is the kingdom of God.20Then Jesus looked at his disciples and said, "How blessed are you who are destitute, because the kingdom of God is yours!
Blessed are you who hunger now, For you shall be filled. Blessed are you who weep now, For you shall laugh.21How blessed are you who are hungry now, because you will be satisfied! How blessed are you who are crying now, because you will laugh!
Blessed are you when men hate you, And when they exclude you, And revile you, and cast out your name as evil, For the Son of Man’s sake.22"How blessed are you whenever people hate you, avoid you, insult you, and slander you because of the Son of Man!
Rejoice in that day and leap for joy! For indeed your reward is great in heaven, For in like manner their fathers did to the prophets.23Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, because your reward in heaven is great! That's the way their ancestors used to treat the prophets.
“But woe to you who are rich, For you have received your consolation.24"But how terrible it will be for you who are rich, because you have had your comfort!
Woe to you who are full, For you shall hunger. Woe to you who laugh now, For you shall mourn and weep.25How terrible it will be for you who are full now, because you will be hungry! How terrible it will be for you who are laughing now, because you will mourn and cry!
Woe to you when all men speak well of you, For so did their fathers to the false prophets.26"How terrible it will be for you when everyone says nice things about you, because that's the way their ancestors used to treat the false prophets!"
“But I say to you who hear: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you,27"But I say to you who are listening: Love your enemies. Do good to those who hate you.
bless those who curse you, and pray for those who spitefully use you.28Bless those who curse you, and pray for those who insult you.
To him who strikes you on the one cheek, offer the other also. And from him who takes away your cloak, do not withhold your tunic either.29If someone strikes you on the cheek, offer him the other one as well, and if someone takes your coat, don't keep back your shirt, either.
Give to everyone who asks of you. And from him who takes away your goods do not ask them back.30Keep on giving to everyone who asks you for something, and if anyone takes what is yours, do not insist on getting it back.
And just as you want men to do to you, you also do to them likewise.31Whatever you want people to do for you, do the same for them.
“But if you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them.32"If you love those who love you, what thanks do you deserve? Why, even sinners love those who love them.
And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same.33If you do good to those who do good to you, what thanks do you deserve? Even sinners do that.
And if you lend to those from whom you hope to receive back, what credit is that to you? For even sinners lend to sinners to receive as much back.34If you lend to those from whom you expect to get something back, what thanks do you deserve? Even sinners lend to sinners to get back what they lend.
But love your enemies, do good, and lend, hoping for nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High. For He is kind to the unthankful and evil.35Rather, love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them, expecting nothing in return. Then your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High, because he is kind even to ungrateful and evil people.
Therefore be merciful, just as your Father also is merciful.36Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful."
“Judge not, and you shall not be judged. Condemn not, and you shall not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven.37"Stop judging, and you'll never be judged. Stop condemning, and you'll never be condemned. Forgive, and you'll be forgiven.
Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your bosom. For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you.”38Give, and it will be given to you. A large quantity, pressed together, shaken down, and running over will be put into your lap, because you'll be evaluated by the same standard with which you evaluate others."
And He spoke a parable to them: “Can the blind lead the blind? Will they not both fall into the ditch?39He also told them a parable: "One blind person can't lead another blind person, can he? Both will fall into a ditch, won't they?
A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone who is perfectly trained will be like his teacher.40A disciple is not better than his teacher. But everyone who is fully-trained will be like his teacher.
And why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye, but do not perceive the plank in your own eye?41"Why do you see the speck in your brother's eye but fail to notice the beam in your own eye?
Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me remove the speck that is in your eye,’ when you yourself do not see the plank that is in your own eye? Hypocrite! First remove the plank from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck that is in your brother’s eye.42How can you say to your brother, 'Brother, let me take the speck out of your eye,' when you don't see the beam in your own eye? You hypocrite! First remove the beam from your own eye, and then you'll see clearly enough to remove the speck from your brother's eye."
“For a good tree does not bear bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit.43"A good tree doesn't produce rotten fruit, and a rotten tree doesn't produce good fruit,
For every tree is known by its own fruit. For men do not gather figs from thorns, nor do they gather grapes from a bramble bush.44because every tree is known by its own fruit. People don't gather figs from thorny plants or pick grapes from a thorn bush.
A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth evil. For out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.45A good person produces good from the good treasure of his heart, and an evil person produces evil from an evil treasure, because the mouth speaks from the overflow of the heart."
“But why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do the things which I say?46"Why do you keep calling me 'Lord, Lord,' but don't do what I tell you?
Whoever comes to Me, and hears My sayings and does them, I will show you whom he is like:47I will show you what everyone is like who comes to me, hears my words, and acts on them.
He is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently against that house, and could not shake it, for it was founded on the rock.48They are like a person building a house, who dug a deep hole to lay the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the floodwaters pushed against that house but couldn't shake it, because it had been founded on the rock.
But he who heard and did nothing is like a man who built a house on the earth without a foundation, against which the stream beat vehemently; and immediately it fell. And the ruin of that house was great.”49But the person who hears what I say but doesn't act on it is like someone who built a house on the ground without any foundation. When the floodwaters pushed against it, that house quickly collapsed, and the resulting destruction of that house was extensive."
