Then Jesus, being filled with the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness,1Then Jesus, filled with the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan. He was led by the Spirit into the wilderness,
being tempted for forty days by the devil. And in those days He ate nothing, and afterward, when they had ended, He was hungry.2where he was being tempted by the devil for 40 days. During that time he ate nothing at all, and when they were over he became hungry.
And the devil said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread.”3The devil told him, "Since you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become a loaf of bread."
But Jesus answered him, saying, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.’ ”4Jesus answered him, "It is written, 'One must not live on bread alone, but on every word of God.'"
Then the devil, taking Him up on a high mountain, showed Him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time.5The devil also took him to a high place and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in an instant.
And the devil said to Him, “All this authority I will give You, and their glory; for this has been delivered to me, and I give it to whomever I wish.6He told Jesus, "I will give you all this authority, along with their glory, because it has been given to me, and I give it to anyone I please.
Therefore, if You will worship before me, all will be Yours.”7So if you will worship me, all this will be yours."
And Jesus answered and said to him, “Get behind Me, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the LORD your God, and Him only you shall serve.’ ”8But Jesus answered him, "It is written, 'You must worship the Lord your God and serve only him.'"
Then he brought Him to Jerusalem, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down from here.9The devil also took him into Jerusalem and had him stand on the highest point of the Temple. He told Jesus, "Since you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here,
For it is written: ‘He shall give His angels charge over you, To keep you,’10because it is written, 'God will put his angels in charge of you to watch over you carefully.
and, ‘In their hands they shall bear you up, Lest you dash your foot against a stone.’ ”11With their hands they will hold you up, so that you will never hit your foot against a rock.'"
And Jesus answered and said to him, “It has been said, ‘You shall not tempt the LORD your God.’ ”12Jesus answered him, "It has been said, 'You must not tempt the Lord your God.'"
Now when the devil had ended every temptation, he departed from Him until an opportune time.13After the devil had finished tempting Jesus in every possible way, he left him until another time.
Then Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee, and news of Him went out through all the surrounding region.14Then Jesus returned to Galilee by the power of the Spirit. Meanwhile, the news about him spread throughout the surrounding country.
And He taught in their synagogues, being glorified by all.15He began to teach in their synagogues and was continuously receiving praise from everyone.
So He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up. And as His custom was, He went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up to read.16Then Jesus came to Nazareth, where he had been raised. As was his custom, he went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day. When he stood up to read,
And He was handed the book of the prophet Isaiah. And when He had opened the book, He found the place where it was written:17the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling the scroll, he found the place where it was written,
“The Spirit of the LORD is upon Me, Because He has anointed Me To preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives And recovery of sight to the blind, To set at liberty those who are oppressed;18"The Spirit of the Lord is upon me; he has anointed me to tell the good news to the poor. He has sent me to announce release to the prisoners and recovery of sight to the blind, to set oppressed people free,
To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD.”19and to announce the year of the Lord's favor."
Then He closed the book, and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all who were in the synagogue were fixed on Him.20Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. While the eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fixed on him,
And He began to say to them, “Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.”21he began to say to them, "Today this Scripture has been fulfilled, as you've heard it read aloud."
So all bore witness to Him, and marveled at the gracious words which proceeded out of His mouth. And they said, “Is this not Joseph’s son?”22All the people began to speak well of him and to wonder at the gracious words that flowed from his mouth. They said, "This is Joseph's son, isn't it?"
He said to them, “You will surely say this proverb to Me, ‘Physician, heal yourself! Whatever we have heard done in Capernaum, do also here in Your country.’ ”23So he told them, "You will probably quote this proverb to me, 'Doctor, heal yourself! Do everything here in your hometown that we hear you did in Capernaum.'"
Then He said, “Assuredly, I say to you, no prophet is accepted in his own country.24He added, "I tell all of you with certainty, a prophet is not accepted in his hometown.
But I tell you truly, many widows were in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, and there was a great famine throughout all the land;25I'm telling you the truth—there were many widows in Israel in Elijah's time, when it didn't rain for three years and six months and there was a severe famine everywhere in the land.
but to none of them was Elijah sent except to Zarephath, in the region of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow.26Yet Elijah wasn't sent to a single one of those widows except to one at Zarephath in Sidon.
And many lepers were in Israel in the time of Elisha the prophet, and none of them was cleansed except Naaman the Syrian.”27There were also many lepers in Israel in the prophet Elisha's time, yet not one of them was cleansed except Naaman the Syrian."
So all those in the synagogue, when they heard these things, were filled with wrath,28All the people in the synagogue became furious when they heard this.
and rose up and thrust Him out of the city; and they led Him to the brow of the hill on which their city was built, that they might throw Him down over the cliff.29They got up, forced Jesus out of the city, and led him to the edge of the hill on which their city was built, intending to throw him off.
Then passing through the midst of them, He went His way.30But he walked right through the middle of them and went away.
Then He went down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and was teaching them on the Sabbaths.31Then Jesus went down to Capernaum, a city in Galilee, and began teaching the people on Sabbath days.
And they were astonished at His teaching, for His word was with authority.32They were utterly amazed at what he taught, because his message was spoken with authority.
Now in the synagogue there was a man who had a spirit of an unclean demon. And he cried out with a loud voice,33In the synagogue was a man who had a demon. He screamed with a loud voice,
saying, “Let us alone! What have we to do with You, Jesus of Nazareth? Did You come to destroy us? I know who You are—the Holy One of God!”34"Oh, no! What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!"
But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be quiet, and come out of him!” And when the demon had thrown him in their midst, it came out of him and did not hurt him.35But Jesus rebuked him. "Be quiet," he said, "and come out of him!" At this, the demon threw the man down in the middle of the synagogue and came out of him without hurting him.
Then they were all amazed and spoke among themselves, saying, “What a word this is! For with authority and power He commands the unclean spirits, and they come out.”36Overwhelmed with amazement, they all kept saying to one another, "What kind of statement is this?—because with authority and power he gives orders to unclean spirits, and they come out!"
And the report about Him went out into every place in the surrounding region.37So news about him spread to every place in the surrounding region.
Now He arose from the synagogue and entered Simon’s house. But Simon’s wife’s mother was sick with a high fever, and they made request of Him concerning her.38Then Jesus got up to leave the synagogue and went into Simon's house. Now Simon's mother-in-law was sick with a high fever, so they asked Jesus about her.
So He stood over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her. And immediately she arose and served them.39He bent over her, rebuked the fever, and it left her. She got up at once and began serving them.
When the sun was setting, all those who had any that were sick with various diseases brought them to Him; and He laid His hands on every one of them and healed them.40When the sun was setting, everyone who had any friends suffering from various diseases brought them to him. He placed his hands on each of them and began healing them.
And demons also came out of many, crying out and saying, “You are the Christ, the Son of God!” And He, rebuking them, did not allow them to speak, for they knew that He was the Christ.41Even demons came out of many people, screaming, "You are the Son of God!" But Jesus rebuked them and ordered them not to speak, because they knew he was the Messiah.
Now when it was day, He departed and went into a deserted place. And the crowd sought Him and came to Him, and tried to keep Him from leaving them;42At daybreak he left and went to a deserted place, while the crowds kept looking for him. When they came to him, they tried to keep him from leaving them.
but He said to them, “I must preach the kingdom of God to the other cities also, because for this purpose I have been sent.”43But he told them, "I have to proclaim the good news about the kingdom of God in other cities, because I was sent to do that also."
And He was preaching in the synagogues of Galilee.44So he continued to preach in the synagogues of Galilee.
