Paul came to Derbe and then to Lystra, where a disciple named Timothy lived, whose mother was Jewish and a believer but whose father was a Greek.1Then he went on to Derbe and Lystra, where there was a disciple named Timothy, the son of a believing Jewish woman, but his father was a Greek.
The believers at Lystra and Iconium spoke well of him.2The brothers at Lystra and Iconium spoke highly of him.
Paul wanted to take him along on the journey, so he circumcised him because of the Jews who lived in that area, for they all knew that his father was a Greek.3Paul wanted Timothy to go with him, so he took him and circumcised him because of the Jews who were in those places, since they all knew that his father was a Greek.
As they traveled from town to town, they delivered the decisions reached by the apostles and elders in Jerusalem for the people to obey.4As they traveled through the towns, they delivered the decisions reached by the apostles and elders at Jerusalem for them to observe.
So the churches were strengthened in the faith and grew daily in numbers.5So the churches were strengthened in the faith and increased in number daily.
Paul and his companions traveled throughout the region of Phrygia and Galatia, having been kept by the Holy Spirit from preaching the word in the province of Asia.6They went through the region of Phrygia and Galatia and were prevented by the Holy Spirit from speaking the message in Asia.
When they came to the border of Mysia, they tried to enter Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus would not allow them to.7When they came to Mysia, they tried to go into Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus did not allow them.
So they passed by Mysia and went down to Troas.8So, bypassing Mysia, they came down to Troas.
During the night Paul had a vision of a man of Macedonia standing and begging him, "Come over to Macedonia and help us."9During the night a vision appeared to Paul: A Macedonian man was standing and pleading with him, "Cross over to Macedonia and help us!"
After Paul had seen the vision, we got ready at once to leave for Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to preach the gospel to them.10After he had seen the vision, we immediately made efforts to set out for Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to evangelize them.
From Troas we put out to sea and sailed straight for Samothrace, and the next day we went on to Neapolis.11Then, setting sail from Troas, we ran a straight course to Samothrace, the next day to Neapolis,
From there we traveled to Philippi, a Roman colony and the leading city of that district of Macedonia. And we stayed there several days.12and from there to Philippi, a Roman colony, which is a leading city of that district of Macedonia. We stayed in that city for a number of days.
On the Sabbath we went outside the city gate to the river, where we expected to find a place of prayer. We sat down and began to speak to the women who had gathered there.13On the Sabbath day we went outside the city gate by the river, where we thought there was a place of prayer. We sat down and spoke to the women gathered there.
One of those listening was a woman from the city of Thyatira named Lydia, a dealer in purple cloth. She was a worshiper of God. The Lord opened her heart to respond to Paul's message.14A woman named Lydia, a dealer in purple cloth from the city of Thyatira, who worshiped God, was listening. The Lord opened her heart to pay attention to what was spoken by Paul.
When she and the members of her household were baptized, she invited us to her home. "If you consider me a believer in the Lord," she said, "come and stay at my house." And she persuaded us.15After she and her household were baptized, she urged us, "If you consider me a believer in the Lord, come and stay at my house." And she persuaded us.
Once when we were going to the place of prayer, we were met by a female slave who had a spirit by which she predicted the future. She earned a great deal of money for her owners by fortune-telling.16Once, as we were on our way to prayer, a slave girl met us who had a spirit of prediction. She made a large profit for her owners by fortune-telling.
She followed Paul and the rest of us, shouting, "These men are servants of the Most High God, who are telling you the way to be saved."17As she followed Paul and us she cried out, "These men, who are proclaiming to you the way of salvation, are the slaves of the Most High God."
She kept this up for many days. Finally Paul became so annoyed that he turned around and said to the spirit, "In the name of Jesus Christ I command you to come out of her!" At that moment the spirit left her.18And she did this for many days. But Paul was greatly aggravated and turning to the spirit, said, "I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her!" And it came out right away.
When her owners realized that their hope of making money was gone, they seized Paul and Silas and dragged them into the marketplace to face the authorities.19When her owners saw that their hope of profit was gone, they seized Paul and Silas and dragged them into the marketplace to the authorities.
They brought them before the magistrates and said, "These men are Jews, and are throwing our city into an uproar20Bringing them before the chief magistrates, they said, "These men are seriously disturbing our city. They are Jews
by advocating customs unlawful for us Romans to accept or practice."21and are promoting customs that are not legal for us as Romans to adopt or practice."
The crowd joined in the attack against Paul and Silas, and the magistrates ordered them to be stripped and beaten with rods.22Then the mob joined in the attack against them, and the chief magistrates stripped off their clothes and ordered them to be beaten with rods.
After they had been severely flogged, they were thrown into prison, and the jailer was commanded to guard them carefully.23After they had inflicted many blows on them, they threw them in jail, ordering the jailer to keep them securely guarded.
When he received these orders, he put them in the inner cell and fastened their feet in the stocks.24Receiving such an order, he put them into the inner prison and secured their feet in the stocks.
About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them.25About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them.
Suddenly there was such a violent earthquake that the foundations of the prison were shaken. At once all the prison doors flew open, and everyone's chains came loose.26Suddenly there was such a violent earthquake that the foundations of the jail were shaken, and immediately all the doors were opened, and everyone's chains came loose.
The jailer woke up, and when he saw the prison doors open, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself because he thought the prisoners had escaped.27When the jailer woke up and saw the doors of the prison open, he drew his sword and was going to kill himself, since he thought the prisoners had escaped.
But Paul shouted, "Don't harm yourself! We are all here!"28But Paul called out in a loud voice, "Don't harm yourself, because all of us are here!"
The jailer called for lights, rushed in and fell trembling before Paul and Silas.29Then the jailer called for lights, rushed in, and fell down trembling before Paul and Silas.
He then brought them out and asked, "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?"30Then he escorted them out and said, "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?"
They replied, "Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved--you and your household."31So they said, "Believe on the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved--you and your household."
Then they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all the others in his house.32Then they spoke the message of the Lord to him along with everyone in his house.
At that hour of the night the jailer took them and washed their wounds; then immediately he and all his household were baptized.33He took them the same hour of the night and washed their wounds. Right away he and all his family were baptized.
The jailer brought them into his house and set a meal before them; he was filled with joy because he had come to believe in God--he and his whole household.34He brought them into his house, set a meal before them, and rejoiced because he had believed God with his entire household.
When it was daylight, the magistrates sent their officers to the jailer with the order: "Release those men."35When daylight came, the chief magistrates sent the police to say, "Release those men!"
The jailer told Paul, "The magistrates have ordered that you and Silas be released. Now you can leave. Go in peace."36The jailer reported these words to Paul: "The magistrates have sent orders for you to be released. So come out now and go in peace."
But Paul said to the officers: "They beat us publicly without a trial, even though we are Roman citizens, and threw us into prison. And now do they want to get rid of us quietly? No! Let them come themselves and escort us out."37But Paul said to them, "They beat us in public without a trial, although we are Roman citizens, and threw us in jail. And now are they going to smuggle us out secretly? Certainly not! On the contrary, let them come themselves and escort us out!"
The officers reported this to the magistrates, and when they heard that Paul and Silas were Roman citizens, they were alarmed.38Then the police reported these words to the magistrates. They were afraid when they heard that Paul and Silas were Roman citizens.
They came to appease them and escorted them from the prison, requesting them to leave the city.39So they came and apologized to them, and escorting them out, they urged them to leave town.
After Paul and Silas came out of the prison, they went to Lydia's house, where they met with the brothers and sisters and encouraged them. Then they left.40After leaving the jail, they came to Lydia's house where they saw and encouraged the brothers, and departed.
