A song, a psalm of Asaph. O God, do not be silent! Do not ignore us! Do not be inactive, O God! | 1A song. A psalm of Asaph. O God, do not remain silent; do not turn a deaf ear, do not stand aloof, O God. |
For look, your enemies are making a commotion; those who hate you are hostile. | 2See how your enemies growl, how your foes rear their heads. |
They carefully plot against your people, and make plans to harm the ones you cherish. | 3With cunning they conspire against your people; they plot against those you cherish. |
They say, "Come on, let's annihilate them so they are no longer a nation! Then the name of Israel will be remembered no more." | 4"Come," they say, "let us destroy them as a nation, so that Israel's name is remembered no more." |
Yes, they devise a unified strategy; they form an alliance against you. | 5With one mind they plot together; they form an alliance against you-- |
It includes the tents of Edom and the Ishmaelites, Moab and the Hagrites, | 6the tents of Edom and the Ishmaelites, of Moab and the Hagrites, |
Gebal, Ammon, and Amalek, Philistia and the inhabitants of Tyre. | 7Byblos, Ammon and Amalek, Philistia, with the people of Tyre. |
Even Assyria has allied with them, lending its strength to the descendants of Lot. (Selah) | 8Even Assyria has joined them to reinforce Lot's descendants. |
Do to them as you did to Midian--as you did to Sisera and Jabin at the Kishon River! | 9Do to them as you did to Midian, as you did to Sisera and Jabin at the river Kishon, |
They were destroyed at Endor; their corpses were like manure on the ground. | 10who perished at Endor and became like dung on the ground. |
Make their nobles like Oreb and Zeeb, and all their rulers like Zebah and Zalmunna, | 11Make their nobles like Oreb and Zeeb, all their princes like Zebah and Zalmunna, |
who said, "Let's take over the pastures of God!" | 12who said, "Let us take possession of the pasturelands of God." |
O my God, make them like dead thistles, like dead weeds blown away by the wind! | 13Make them like tumbleweed, my God, like chaff before the wind. |
Like the fire that burns down the forest, or the flames that consume the mountainsides, | 14As fire consumes the forest or a flame sets the mountains ablaze, |
chase them with your gale winds, and terrify them with your windstorm. | 15so pursue them with your tempest and terrify them with your storm. |
Cover their faces with shame, so they might seek you, O LORD. | 16Cover their faces with shame, LORD, so that they will seek your name. |
May they be humiliated and continually terrified! May they die in shame! | 17May they ever be ashamed and dismayed; may they perish in disgrace. |
Then they will know that you alone are the LORD, the sovereign king over all the earth. | 18Let them know that you, whose name is the LORD-- that you alone are the Most High over all the earth. |
