1Abraham had taken another wife, named Keturah.

1Now Abraham took another wife, whose name was Keturah.

2She bore him Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah.

2She bore to him Zimran and Jokshan and Medan and Midian and Ishbak and Shuah.

3Jokshan became the father of Sheba and Dedan. The descendants of Dedan were the Asshurites, Letushites, and Leummites.

4The sons of Midian were Ephah, Epher, Hanoch, Abida, and Eldaah. All these were descendants of Keturah.

5Everything he owned Abraham left to his son Isaac.

5Now Abraham gave all that he had to Isaac;

6But while he was still alive, Abraham gave gifts to the sons of his concubines and sent them off to the east, away from his son Isaac.

6but to the sons of his concubines, Abraham gave gifts while he was still living, and sent them away from his son Isaac eastward, to the land of the east.

7Abraham lived a total of 175 years.

7These are all the years of Abraham's life that he lived, one hundred and seventy-five years.

8Then Abraham breathed his last and died at a good old age, an old man who had lived a full life. He joined his ancestors.

8Abraham breathed his last and died in a ripe old age, an old man and satisfied with life; and he was gathered to his people.

9His sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him in the cave of Machpelah near Mamre, in the field of Ephron the son of Zohar, the Hethite.

10This was the field Abraham had purchased from the sons of Heth. There Abraham was buried with his wife Sarah.

11After Abraham's death, God blessed his son Isaac. Isaac lived near Beer Lahai Roi.

11It came about after the death of Abraham, that God blessed his son Isaac; and Isaac lived by Beer-lahai-roi.

12This is the account of Abraham's son Ishmael, whom Hagar the Egyptian, Sarah's servant, bore to Abraham.

12Now these are the records of the generations of Ishmael, Abraham's son, whom Hagar the Egyptian, Sarah's maid, bore to Abraham;

13These are the names of Ishmael's sons, by their names according to their records: Nebaioth (Ishmael's firstborn), Kedar, Adbeel, Mibsam,

13and these are the names of the sons of Ishmael, by their names, in the order of their birth: Nebaioth, the firstborn of Ishmael, and Kedar and Adbeel and Mibsam

14Mishma, Dumah, Massa,

14and Mishma and Dumah and Massa,

15Hadad, Tema, Jetur, Naphish, and Kedemah.

15Hadad and Tema, Jetur, Naphish and Kedemah.

16These are the sons of Ishmael, and these are their names by their settlements and their camps--twelve princes according to their clans.

16These are the sons of Ishmael and these are their names, by their villages, and by their camps; twelve princes according to their tribes.

17Ishmael lived a total of 137 years. He breathed his last and died; then he joined his ancestors.

17These are the years of the life of Ishmael, one hundred and thirty-seven years; and he breathed his last and died, and was gathered to his people.

18His descendants settled from Havilah to Shur, which runs next to Egypt all the way to Asshur. They settled away from all their relatives.

18They settled from Havilah to Shur which is east of Egypt as one goes toward Assyria; he settled in defiance of all his relatives.

19This is the account of Isaac, the son of Abraham. Abraham became the father of Isaac.

19Now these are the records of the generations of Isaac, Abraham's son: Abraham became the father of Isaac;

20When Isaac was forty years old, he married Rebekah, the daughter of Bethuel the Aramean from Paddan Aram and sister of Laban the Aramean.

20and Isaac was forty years old when he took Rebekah, the daughter of Bethuel the Aramean of Paddan-aram, the sister of Laban the Aramean, to be his wife.

21Isaac prayed to the LORD on behalf of his wife because she was childless. The LORD answered his prayer, and his wife Rebekah became pregnant.

21Isaac prayed to the LORD on behalf of his wife, because she was barren; and the LORD answered him and Rebekah his wife conceived.

22But the children struggled inside her, and she said, "If it is going to be like this, I'm not so sure I want to be pregnant!" So she asked the LORD,

22But the children struggled together within her; and she said, "If it is so, why then am I this way?" So she went to inquire of the LORD.

23and the LORD said to her, "Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples will be separated from within you. One people will be stronger than the other, and the older will serve the younger."

23The LORD said to her, "Two nations are in your womb; And two peoples will be separated from your body; And one people shall be stronger than the other; And the older shall serve the younger."

24When the time came for Rebekah to give birth, there were twins in her womb.

24When her days to be delivered were fulfilled, behold, there were twins in her womb.

25The first came out reddish all over, like a hairy garment, so they named him Esau.

25Now the first came forth red, all over like a hairy garment; and they named him Esau.

26When his brother came out with his hand clutching Esau's heel, they named him Jacob. Isaac was sixty years old when they were born.

26Afterward his brother came forth with his hand holding on to Esau's heel, so his name was called Jacob; and Isaac was sixty years old when she gave birth to them.

27When the boys grew up, Esau became a skilled hunter, a man of the open fields, but Jacob was an even-tempered man, living in tents.

28Isaac loved Esau because he had a taste for fresh game, but Rebekah loved Jacob.

29Now Jacob cooked some stew, and when Esau came in from the open fields, he was famished.

29When Jacob had cooked stew, Esau came in from the field and he was famished;

30So Esau said to Jacob, "Feed me some of the red stuff--yes, this red stuff--because I'm starving!" (That is why he was also called Edom.)

30and Esau said to Jacob, "Please let me have a swallow of that red stuff there, for I am famished." Therefore his name was called Edom.

31But Jacob replied, "First sell me your birthright."

31But Jacob said, "First sell me your birthright."

32"Look," said Esau, "I'm about to die! What use is the birthright to me?"

32Esau said, "Behold, I am about to die; so of what use then is the birthright to me?"

33But Jacob said, "Swear an oath to me now." So Esau swore an oath to him and sold his birthright to Jacob.

33And Jacob said, "First swear to me"; so he swore to him, and sold his birthright to Jacob.

34Then Jacob gave Esau some bread and lentil stew; Esau ate and drank, then got up and went out. So Esau despised his birthright.

34Then Jacob gave Esau bread and lentil stew; and he ate and drank, and rose and went on his way. Thus Esau despised his birthright.
