For the music director, a psalm of David. O God whom I praise, do not ignore me! | 1God, whom I praise, do not be silent, |
For they say cruel and deceptive things to me; they lie to me. | 2for the mouths of wicked and deceitful people are opened against me; they speak against me with lying tongues. |
They surround me and say hateful things; they attack me for no reason. | 3They surround me with hate-filled words, attacking me for no reason. |
They repay my love with accusations, but I continue to pray. | 4Instead of receiving my love, they accuse me, though I continue in prayer. |
They repay me evil for good, and hate for love. | 5They devise evil against me instead of good, and hatred in place of my love. |
Appoint an evil man to testify against him! May an accuser stand at his right side! | 6Appoint an evil person over him; may an accuser stand at his right side. |
When he is judged, he will be found guilty! Then his prayer will be regarded as sinful. | 7When he is judged, may he be found guilty; may his prayer be regarded as sin. |
May his days be few! May another take his job! | 8May his days be few; may another take over his position. |
May his children be fatherless, and his wife a widow! | 9May his children become fatherless, and his wife a widow. |
May his children roam around begging, asking for handouts as they leave their ruined home! | 10May his children roam around begging, seeking food while driven far from their ruined homes. |
May the creditor seize all he owns! May strangers loot his property! | 11May creditors seize all his possessions, and may foreigners loot the property he has acquired. |
May no one show him kindness! May no one have compassion on his fatherless children! | 12May no one extend gracious love to him, or show favor to his fatherless children. |
May his descendants be cut off! May the memory of them be wiped out by the time the next generation arrives! | 13May his descendants be eliminated, and their memory be erased from the next generation. |
May his ancestors' sins be remembered by the LORD! May his mother's sin not be forgotten! | 14May his ancestors' guilt be remembered in the LORD's presence, and may his mother's guilt not be erased. |
May the LORD be constantly aware of them, and cut off the memory of his children from the earth! | 15May what they have done be continually in the LORD's presence; and may their memory be excised from the earth. |
For he never bothered to show kindness; he harassed the oppressed and needy, and killed the disheartened. | 16For he didn't think to extend gracious love; he harassed to death the poor, the needy, and the broken hearted. |
He loved to curse others, so those curses have come upon him. He had no desire to bless anyone, so he has experienced no blessings. | 17He loved to curse—may his curses return upon him! He took no delight in blessing others — so may blessings be far from him. |
He made cursing a way of life, so curses poured into his stomach like water and seeped into his bones like oil. | 18He wore curses like a garment— may they enter his inner being like water and his bones like oil. |
May a curse attach itself to him, like a garment one puts on, or a belt one wears continually! | 19May those curses wrap around him like a garment, or like a belt that one always wears. |
May the LORD repay my accusers in this way, those who say evil things about me! | 20May this be the way the LORD repays my accuser, those who speak evil against me. |
O sovereign LORD, intervene on my behalf for the sake of your reputation! Because your loyal love is good, deliver me! | 21Now you, LORD my God, defend me for your name's sake; because your gracious love is good, deliver me! |
For I am oppressed and needy, and my heart beats violently within me. | 22Indeed, I am poor and needy, and my heart is wounded within me. |
I am fading away like a shadow at the end of the day; I am shaken off like a locust. | 23I am fading away like a shadow late in the day; I am shaken off like a locust. |
I am so starved my knees shake; I have turned into skin and bones. | 24My knees give way from fasting, and my skin is lean, deprived of oil. |
I am disdained by them. When they see me, they shake their heads. | 25I have become an object of derision to them— they shake their heads whenever they see me. |
Help me, O LORD my God! Because you are faithful to me, deliver me! | 26Help me, LORD my God! Deliver me in accord with your gracious love! |
Then they will realize this is your work, and that you, LORD, have accomplished it. | 27Then they will realize that your hand is in this— that you, LORD, have accomplished it. |
They curse, but you will bless. When they attack, they will be humiliated, but your servant will rejoice. | 28They will curse, but you will bless. When they attack, they will be humiliated, while your servant rejoices. |
My accusers will be covered with shame, and draped in humiliation as if it were a robe. | 29May my accusers be clothed with shame and wrapped in their humiliation as with a robe. |
I will thank the LORD profusely, in the middle of a crowd I will praise him, | 30I will give many thanks to the LORD with my mouth, praising him publicly, |
because he stands at the right hand of the needy, to deliver him from those who threaten his life. | 31for he stands at the right hand of the needy one, to deliver him from his accusers. |
