Hannah prayed, "My heart rejoices in the LORD; my horn is exalted high because of the LORD. I loudly denounce my enemies, for I am happy that you delivered me. | 1Hannah prayed: My heart rejoices in the LORD; my horn is lifted up by the LORD. My mouth boasts over my enemies, because I rejoice in Your salvation. |
No one is holy like the LORD! There is no one other than you! There is no rock like our God! | 2There is no one holy like the LORD. There is no one besides You! And there is no rock like our God. |
Don't keep speaking so arrogantly, letting proud talk come out of your mouth! For the LORD is a God who knows; he evaluates what people do. | 3Do not boast so proudly, or let arrogant words come out of your mouth, for the LORD is a God of knowledge, and actions are weighed by Him. |
The bows of warriors are shattered, but those who stumble find their strength reinforced. | 4The bows of the warriors are broken, but the feeble are clothed with strength. |
Those who are well-fed hire themselves out to earn food, but the hungry no longer lack. Even the barren woman gives birth to seven, but the one with many children withers away. | 5Those who are full hire themselves out for food, but those who are starving hunger no more. The woman who is childless gives birth to seven, but the woman with many sons pines away. |
The LORD both kills and gives life; he brings down to the grave and raises up. | 6The LORD brings death and gives life; He sends some to Sheol, and He raises others up. |
The LORD impoverishes and makes wealthy; he humbles and he exalts. | 7The LORD brings poverty and gives wealth; He humbles and He exalts. |
He lifts the weak from the dust; he raises the poor from the ash heap to seat them with princes and to bestow on them an honored position. The foundations of the earth belong to the LORD, and he has placed the world on them. | 8He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the garbage pile. He seats them with noblemen and gives them a throne of honor. For the foundations of the earth are the LORD's; He has set the world on them. |
He watches over his holy ones, but the wicked are made speechless in the darkness, for it is not by one's own strength that one prevails. | 9He guards the steps of His faithful ones, but the wicked perish in darkness, for a man does not prevail by his own strength. |
The LORD shatters his adversaries; he thunders against them from the heavens. The LORD executes judgment to the ends of the earth. He will strengthen his king and exalt the power of his anointed one." | 10Those who oppose the LORD will be shattered; He will thunder in the heavens against them. The LORD will judge the ends of the earth. He will give power to His king; He will lift up the horn of His anointed. |
Then Elkanah went back home to Ramah. But the boy was serving the LORD under the supervision of Eli the priest. | 11Elkanah went home to Ramah, but the boy served the LORD in the presence of Eli the priest. |
The sons of Eli were wicked men. They did not recognize the LORD's authority. | 12Eli's sons were wicked men; they had no regard for the LORD |
Now the priests would always treat the people in the following way: Whenever anyone was making a sacrifice, while the meat was boiling, the priest's attendant would come with a three-pronged fork in his hand. | 13or for the priests' share of the sacrifices from the people. When any man offered a sacrifice, the priest's servant would come with a three-pronged meat fork while the meat was boiling |
He would jab it into the basin, kettle, caldron, or pot, and everything that the fork brought up the priest would take for himself. This is what they used to do to all the Israelites when they came there to Shiloh. | 14and plunge it into the container or kettle or cauldron or cooking pot. The priest would claim for himself whatever the meat fork brought up. This is the way they treated all the Israelites who came there to Shiloh. |
Even before they burned the fat, the priest's attendant would come and say to the person who was making the sacrifice, "Hand over some meat for the priest to roast! He won't take boiled meat from you, but only raw." | 15Even before the fat was burned, the priest's servant would come and say to the man who was sacrificing, "Give the priest some meat to roast, because he won't accept boiled meat from you--only raw." |
If the individual said to him, "First let the fat be burned away, and then take for yourself whatever you wish," he would say, "No! Hand it over right now! If you don't, I will take it forcibly!" | 16If that man said to him, "The fat must be burned first; then you can take whatever you want for yourself," the servant would reply, "No, I insist that you hand it over right now. If you don't, I'll take it by force!" |
The sin of these young men was very great in the LORD's sight, for they treated the LORD's offering with contempt. | 17So the servants' sin was very severe in the presence of the LORD, because they treated the LORD's offering with contempt. |
Now Samuel was ministering before the LORD. The boy was dressed in a linen ephod. | 18The boy Samuel served in the LORD's presence and wore a linen ephod. |
His mother used to make him a small robe and bring it up to him at regular intervals when she would go up with her husband to make the annual sacrifice. | 19Each year his mother made him a little robe and took it to him when she went with her husband to offer the annual sacrifice. |
Eli would bless Elkanah and his wife saying, "May the LORD raise up for you descendants from this woman to replace the one that she dedicated to the LORD." Then they would go to their home. | 20Eli would bless Elkanah and his wife: "May the LORD give you children by this woman in place of the one she has given to the LORD." Then they would go home. |
So the LORD graciously attended to Hannah, and she was able to conceive and gave birth to three sons and two daughters. The boy Samuel grew up at the LORD's sanctuary. | 21The LORD paid attention to Hannah's need, and she conceived and gave birth to three sons and two daughters. Meanwhile, the boy Samuel grew up in the presence of the LORD. |
Now Eli was very old when he heard about everything that his sons used to do to all the people of Israel and how they used to have sex with the women who were stationed at the entrance to the tent of meeting. | 22Now Eli was very old. He heard about everything his sons were doing to all Israel and how they were sleeping with the women who served at the entrance to the tent of meeting. |
He said to them, "Why do you behave in this way? For I hear about these evil things from all these people. | 23He said to them, "Why are you doing these things? I have heard about your evil actions from all these people. |
This ought not to be, my sons! For the report that I hear circulating among the LORD's people is not good. | 24No, my sons, the report I hear from the LORD's people is not good. |
If a man sins against a man, one may appeal to God on his behalf. But if a man sins against the LORD, who then will intercede for him?" But Eli's sons would not listen to their father, for the LORD had decided to kill them. | 25If a man sins against another man, God can intercede for him, but if a man sins against the LORD, who can intercede for him?" But they would not listen to their father, since the LORD intended to kill them. |
Now the boy Samuel was growing up and finding favor both with the LORD and with people. | 26By contrast, the boy Samuel grew in stature and in favor with the LORD and with men. |
A man of God came to Eli and said to him, "This is what the LORD says: 'Did I not plainly reveal myself to your ancestor's house when they were in Egypt in the house of Pharaoh? | 27A man of God came to Eli and said to him, "This is what the LORD says: 'Didn't I reveal Myself to your ancestral house when it was in Egypt and belonged to Pharaoh's palace? |
I chose your ancestor from all the tribes of Israel to be my priest, to offer sacrifice on my altar, to burn incense, and to bear the ephod before me. I gave to your ancestor's house all the fire offerings made by the Israelites. | 28Out of all the tribes of Israel, I selected your house to be priests, to offer sacrifices on My altar, to burn incense, and to wear an ephod in My presence. I also gave your house all the Israelite fire offerings. |
Why are you scorning my sacrifice and my offering that I commanded for my dwelling place? You have honored your sons more than you have me by having made yourselves fat from the best parts of all the offerings of my people Israel.' | 29Why, then, do all of you despise My sacrifices and offerings that I require at the place of worship? You have honored your sons more than Me, by making yourselves fat with the best part of all of the offerings of My people Israel.' |
Therefore the LORD, the God of Israel, says, 'I really did say that your house and your ancestor's house would serve me forever.' But now the LORD says, 'May it never be! For I will honor those who honor me, but those who despise me will be cursed! | 30"Therefore, this is the declaration of the LORD, the God of Israel: 'Although I said your family and your ancestral house would walk before Me forever, the LORD now says, "No longer!" I will honor those who honor Me, but those who despise Me will be disgraced. |
In fact, days are coming when I will remove your strength and the strength of your father's house. There will not be an old man in your house! | 31" 'Look, the days are coming when I will cut off your strength and the strength of your ancestral family, so that none in your family will reach old age. |
You will see trouble in my dwelling place! Israel will experience blessings, but there will not be an old man in your house for all time. | 32You will see distress in the place of worship, in spite of all that is good in Israel, and no one in your family will ever again reach old age. |
Any one of you that I do not cut off from my altar, I will cause your eyes to fail and will cause you grief. All of those born to your family will die in the prime of life. | 33Any man from your family I do not cut off from My altar will bring grief and sadness to you. All your descendants will die violently. |
This will be a confirming sign for you that will be fulfilled through your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas: in a single day they both will die! | 34This will be the sign that will come to you concerning your two sons Hophni and Phinehas: both of them will die on the same day. |
Then I will raise up for myself a faithful priest. He will do what is in my heart and soul. I will build for him a secure dynasty and he will serve my chosen one for all time. | 35" 'Then I will raise up a faithful priest for Myself. He will do whatever is in My heart and mind. I will establish a lasting dynasty for him, and he will walk before My anointed one for all time. |
Everyone who remains in your house will come to bow before him for a little money and for a scrap of bread. Each will say, 'Assign me to a priestly task so I can eat a scrap of bread.'" | 36Anyone who is left in your family will come and bow down to him for a piece of silver or a loaf of bread. He will say: Please appoint me to some priestly office so I can have a piece of bread to eat.'" |
