King James Bible | New Living Translation |
O LORD God, to whom vengeance belongeth; O God, to whom vengeance belongeth, shew thyself. | 1O LORD, the God of vengeance, O God of vengeance, let your glorious justice shine forth! |
Lift up thyself, thou judge of the earth: render a reward to the proud. | 2Arise, O Judge of the earth. Give the proud what they deserve. |
LORD, how long shall the wicked, how long shall the wicked triumph? | 3How long, O LORD? How long will the wicked be allowed to gloat? |
How long shall they utter and speak hard things? and all the workers of iniquity boast themselves? | 4How long will they speak with arrogance? How long will these evil people boast? |
They break in pieces thy people, O LORD, and afflict thine heritage. | 5They crush your people, LORD, hurting those you claim as your own. |
They slay the widow and the stranger, and murder the fatherless. | 6They kill widows and foreigners and murder orphans. |
Yet they say, The LORD shall not see, neither shall the God of Jacob regard it. | 7“The LORD isn’t looking,” they say, “and besides, the God of Israel doesn’t care.” |
Understand, ye brutish among the people: and ye fools, when will ye be wise? | 8Think again, you fools! When will you finally catch on? |
He that planted the ear, shall he not hear? he that formed the eye, shall he not see? | 9Is he deaf—the one who made your ears? Is he blind—the one who formed your eyes? |
He that chastiseth the heathen, shall not he correct? he that teacheth man knowledge, shall not he know? | 10He punishes the nations—won’t he also punish you? He knows everything—doesn’t he also know what you are doing? |
The LORD knoweth the thoughts of man, that they are vanity. | 11The LORD knows people’s thoughts; he knows they are worthless! |
Blessed is the man whom thou chastenest, O LORD, and teachest him out of thy law; | 12Joyful are those you discipline, LORD, those you teach with your instructions. |
That thou mayest give him rest from the days of adversity, until the pit be digged for the wicked. | 13You give them relief from troubled times until a pit is dug to capture the wicked. |
For the LORD will not cast off his people, neither will he forsake his inheritance. | 14The LORD will not reject his people; he will not abandon his special possession. |
But judgment shall return unto righteousness: and all the upright in heart shall follow it. | 15Judgment will again be founded on justice, and those with virtuous hearts will pursue it. |
Who will rise up for me against the evildoers? or who will stand up for me against the workers of iniquity? | 16Who will protect me from the wicked? Who will stand up for me against evildoers? |
Unless the LORD had been my help, my soul had almost dwelt in silence. | 17Unless the LORD had helped me, I would soon have settled in the silence of the grave. |
When I said, My foot slippeth; thy mercy, O LORD, held me up. | 18I cried out, “I am slipping!” but your unfailing love, O LORD, supported me. |
In the multitude of my thoughts within me thy comforts delight my soul. | 19When doubts filled my mind, your comfort gave me renewed hope and cheer. |
Shall the throne of iniquity have fellowship with thee, which frameth mischief by a law? | 20Can unjust leaders claim that God is on their side— leaders whose decrees permit injustice? |
They gather themselves together against the soul of the righteous, and condemn the innocent blood. | 21They gang up against the righteous and condemn the innocent to death. |
But the LORD is my defence; and my God is the rock of my refuge. | 22But the LORD is my fortress; my God is the mighty rock where I hide. |
And he shall bring upon them their own iniquity, and shall cut them off in their own wickedness; yea, the LORD our God shall cut them off. | 23God will turn the sins of evil people back on them. He will destroy them for their sins. The LORD our God will destroy them. |
