Psalm 44
ISV Parallel NLT [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT HEB]
International Standard VersionNew Living Translation
God, we heard it with our ears; our ancestors told us about what you did in their day— a long time ago.1O God, we have heard it with our own ears— our ancestors have told us of all you did in their day, in days long ago:
With your hand you expelled the nations and established our ancestors. You afflicted nations and cast them out.2You drove out the pagan nations by your power and gave all the land to our ancestors. You crushed their enemies and set our ancestors free.
It was not with their sword that they inherited the land, nor did their own arm deliver them. But it was by your power, your strength, and by the light of your face; because you were pleased with them.3They did not conquer the land with their swords; it was not their own strong arm that gave them victory. It was your right hand and strong arm and the blinding light from your face that helped them, for you loved them.
You are my king, God, command victories for Jacob.4You are my King and my God. You command victories for Israel.
Through you we will knock down our oppressors; through your name we will tread down those who rise up against us.5Only by your power can we push back our enemies; only in your name can we trample our foes.
For I place no confidence in my bow, nor will my sword deliver me.6I do not trust in my bow; I do not count on my sword to save me.
For you delivered us from our oppressors and put to shame those who hate us.7You are the one who gives us victory over our enemies; you disgrace those who hate us.
We will praise God all day long; and to your name we will give thanks forever. Interlude8O God, we give glory to you all day long and constantly praise your name. Interlude
However, you cast us off and made us ashamed! You did not even march with our armies!9But now you have tossed us aside in dishonor. You no longer lead our armies to battle.
You made us retreat from our oppressors. Our enemies ransacked us.10You make us retreat from our enemies and allow those who hate us to plunder our land.
You handed us over to be slaughtered like sheep and you scattered us among the nations.11You have butchered us like sheep and scattered us among the nations.
You sold out your people for nothing, and made no profit at that price.12You sold your precious people for a pittance, making nothing on the sale.
You made us a laughing stock to our neighbors, a source of mockery and derision to those around us.13You let our neighbors mock us. We are an object of scorn and derision to those around us.
You made us an object lesson among the nations; people shake their heads at us. 14You have made us the butt of their jokes; they shake their heads at us in scorn.
My dishonor tortures me continuously; the shame on my face overwhelms me15We can’t escape the constant humiliation; shame is written across our faces.
because of the voice of the one who mocks and reviles, because of the enemy and the avenger.16All we hear are the taunts of our mockers. All we see are our vengeful enemies.
All this came upon us, yet we did not forsake you, and we have not dealt falsely with your covenant;17All this has happened though we have not forgotten you. We have not violated your covenant.
Our hearts have not turned away; our steps have not swerved from your path.18Our hearts have not deserted you. We have not strayed from your path.
Nevertheless, you crushed us in the lair of jackals, and covered us in deep darkness. 19Yet you have crushed us in the jackal’s desert home. You have covered us with darkness and death.
If we had forgotten the name of our God or lifted our hands to a foreign god,20If we had forgotten the name of our God or spread our hands in prayer to foreign gods,
wouldn't God find out since he knows the secrets of the heart?21God would surely have known it, for he knows the secrets of every heart.
For your sake we are being killed all day long. We are thought of as sheep to be slaughtered.22But for your sake we are killed every day; we are being slaughtered like sheep.
Wake up! Why are you asleep, Lord? Get up! Don't cast us off forever!23Wake up, O Lord! Why do you sleep? Get up! Do not reject us forever.
Why are you hiding your face? Why are you ignoring our affliction and oppression?24Why do you look the other way? Why do you ignore our suffering and oppression?
For we have collapsed in the dust; our bodies cling to the ground.25We collapse in the dust, lying face down in the dirt.
Arise! Deliver us! Redeem us according to your gracious love!26Rise up! Help us! Ransom us because of your unfailing love.
