English Standard Version | NET Bible |
O God, we have heard with our ears, our fathers have told us, what deeds you performed in their days, in the days of old: | 1For the music director; by the Korahites, a well-written song. O God, we have clearly heard; our ancestors have told us what you did in their days, in ancient times. |
you with your own hand drove out the nations, but them you planted; you afflicted the peoples, but them you set free; | 2You, by your power, defeated nations and settled our fathers on their land; you crushed the people living there and enabled our ancestors to occupy it. |
for not by their own sword did they win the land, nor did their own arm save them, but your right hand and your arm, and the light of your face, for you delighted in them. | 3For they did not conquer the land by their swords, and they did not prevail by their strength, but rather by your power, strength and good favor, for you were partial to them. |
You are my King, O God; ordain salvation for Jacob! | 4You are my king, O God! Decree Jacob's deliverance! |
Through you we push down our foes; through your name we tread down those who rise up against us. | 5By your power we will drive back our enemies; by your strength we will trample down our foes! |
For not in my bow do I trust, nor can my sword save me. | 6For I do not trust in my bow, and I do not prevail by my sword. |
But you have saved us from our foes and have put to shame those who hate us. | 7For you deliver us from our enemies; you humiliate those who hate us. |
In God we have boasted continually, and we will give thanks to your name forever. Selah | 8In God I boast all day long, and we will continually give thanks to your name. (Selah) |
But you have rejected us and disgraced us and have not gone out with our armies. | 9But you rejected and embarrassed us! You did not go into battle with our armies. |
You have made us turn back from the foe, and those who hate us have gotten spoil. | 10You made us retreat from the enemy. Those who hate us take whatever they want from us. |
You have made us like sheep for slaughter and have scattered us among the nations. | 11You handed us over like sheep to be eaten; you scattered us among the nations. |
You have sold your people for a trifle, demanding no high price for them. | 12You sold your people for a pittance; you did not ask a high price for them. |
You have made us the taunt of our neighbors, the derision and scorn of those around us. | 13You made us an object of disdain to our neighbors; those who live on our borders taunt and insult us. |
You have made us a byword among the nations, a laughingstock among the peoples. | 14You made us an object of ridicule among the nations; foreigners treat us with contempt. |
All day long my disgrace is before me, and shame has covered my face | 15All day long I feel humiliated and am overwhelmed with shame, |
at the sound of the taunter and reviler, at the sight of the enemy and the avenger. | 16before the vindictive enemy who ridicules and insults me. |
All this has come upon us, though we have not forgotten you, and we have not been false to your covenant. | 17All this has happened to us, even though we have not rejected you or violated your covenant with us. |
Our heart has not turned back, nor have our steps departed from your way; | 18We have not been unfaithful, nor have we disobeyed your commands. |
yet you have broken us in the place of jackals and covered us with the shadow of death. | 19Yet you have battered us, leaving us a heap of ruins overrun by wild dogs; you have covered us with darkness. |
If we had forgotten the name of our God or spread out our hands to a foreign god, | 20If we had rejected our God, and spread out our hands in prayer to another god, |
would not God discover this? For he knows the secrets of the heart. | 21would not God discover it, for he knows one's thoughts? |
Yet for your sake we are killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered. | 22Yet because of you we are killed all day long; we are treated like sheep at the slaughtering block. |
Awake! Why are you sleeping, O Lord? Rouse yourself! Do not reject us forever! | 23Rouse yourself! Why do you sleep, O Lord? Wake up! Do not reject us forever! |
Why do you hide your face? Why do you forget our affliction and oppression? | 24Why do you look the other way, and ignore the way we are oppressed and mistreated? |
For our soul is bowed down to the dust; our belly clings to the ground. | 25For we lie in the dirt, with our bellies pressed to the ground. |
Rise up; come to our help! Redeem us for the sake of your steadfast love! | 26Rise up and help us! Rescue us because of your loyal love! |
