For behold, the Lord GOD of hosts is taking away from Jerusalem and from Judah support and supply, all support of bread, and all support of water; | 1Note this: The Lord GOD of Armies is about to remove from Jerusalem and from Judah every kind of security: the entire supply of bread and water, |
the mighty man and the soldier, the judge and the prophet, the diviner and the elder, | 2heroes and warriors, judges and prophets, fortune-tellers and elders, |
the captain of fifty and the man of rank, the counselor and the skillful magician and the expert in charms. | 3commanders of fifty and dignitaries, counselors, cunning magicians, and necromancers. |
And I will make boys their princes, and infants shall rule over them. | 4"I will make youths their leaders, and unstable rulers will govern them." |
And the people will oppress one another, every one his fellow and every one his neighbor; the youth will be insolent to the elder, and the despised to the honorable. | 5The people will oppress one another, man against man, neighbor against neighbor; the young will act arrogantly toward the old, and the worthless toward the honorable. |
For a man will take hold of his brother in the house of his father, saying: “You have a cloak; you shall be our leader, and this heap of ruins shall be under your rule”; | 6A man will even seize his brother in his father's house, saying: "You have a cloak--you be our leader! This heap of rubble will be under your control." |
in that day he will speak out, saying: “I will not be a healer; in my house there is neither bread nor cloak; you shall not make me leader of the people.” | 7On that day he will cry out, saying: "I'm not a healer. I don't even have food or clothing in my house. Don't make me the leader of the people!" |
For Jerusalem has stumbled, and Judah has fallen, because their speech and their deeds are against the LORD, defying his glorious presence. | 8For Jerusalem has stumbled and Judah has fallen because they have spoken and acted against the LORD, defying his glorious presence. |
For the look on their faces bears witness against them; they proclaim their sin like Sodom; they do not hide it. Woe to them! For they have brought evil on themselves. | 9The look on their faces testifies against them, and like Sodom, they flaunt their sin; they do not conceal it. Woe to them, for they have brought disaster on themselves. |
Tell the righteous that it shall be well with them, for they shall eat the fruit of their deeds. | 10Tell the righteous that it will go well for them, for they will eat the fruit of their labor. |
Woe to the wicked! It shall be ill with him, for what his hands have dealt out shall be done to him. | 11Woe to the wicked--it will go badly for them, for what they have done will be done to them. |
My people—infants are their oppressors, and women rule over them. O my people, your guides mislead you and they have swallowed up the course of your paths. | 12Youths oppress my people, and women rule over them. My people, your leaders mislead you; they confuse the direction of your paths. |
The LORD has taken his place to contend; he stands to judge peoples. | 13The LORD rises to argue the case and stands to judge the people. |
The LORD will enter into judgment with the elders and princes of his people: “It is you who have devoured the vineyard, the spoil of the poor is in your houses. | 14The LORD brings this charge against the elders and leaders of his people: "You have devastated the vineyard. The plunder from the poor is in your houses. |
What do you mean by crushing my people, by grinding the face of the poor?” declares the Lord GOD of hosts. | 15Why do you crush my people and grind the faces of the poor?" This is the declaration of the Lord GOD of Armies. |
The LORD said: Because the daughters of Zion are haughty and walk with outstretched necks, glancing wantonly with their eyes, mincing along as they go, tinkling with their feet, | 16The LORD also says: Because the daughters of Zion are haughty, walking with heads held high and seductive eyes, prancing along, jingling their ankle bracelets, |
therefore the Lord will strike with a scab the heads of the daughters of Zion, and the LORD will lay bare their secret parts. | 17the Lord will put scabs on the heads of the daughters of Zion, and the LORD will shave their foreheads bare. |
In that day the Lord will take away the finery of the anklets, the headbands, and the crescents; | 18On that day the Lord will strip their finery: ankle bracelets, headbands, crescents, |
the pendants, the bracelets, and the scarves; | 19pendants, bracelets, veils, |
the headdresses, the armlets, the sashes, the perfume boxes, and the amulets; | 20headdresses, ankle jewelry, sashes, perfume bottles, amulets, |
the signet rings and nose rings; | 21signet rings, nose rings, |
the festal robes, the mantles, the cloaks, and the handbags; | 22festive robes, capes, cloaks, purses, |
the mirrors, the linen garments, the turbans, and the veils. | 23garments, linen clothes, turbans, and shawls. |
Instead of perfume there will be rottenness; and instead of a belt, a rope; and instead of well-set hair, baldness; and instead of a rich robe, a skirt of sackcloth; and branding instead of beauty. | 24Instead of perfume there will be a stench; instead of a belt, a rope; instead of beautifully styled hair, baldness; instead of fine clothes, sackcloth; instead of beauty, branding. |
Your men shall fall by the sword and your mighty men in battle. | 25Your men will fall by the sword, your warriors in battle. |
And her gates shall lament and mourn; empty, she shall sit on the ground. | 26Then her gates will lament and mourn; deserted, she will sit on the ground. |
