English Standard VersionChristian Standard Bible
For behold, the Lord GOD of hosts is taking away from Jerusalem and from Judah support and supply, all support of bread, and all support of water;1Note this: The Lord GOD of Armies is about to remove from Jerusalem and from Judah every kind of security: the entire supply of bread and water,
the mighty man and the soldier, the judge and the prophet, the diviner and the elder,2heroes and warriors, judges and prophets, fortune-tellers and elders,
the captain of fifty and the man of rank, the counselor and the skillful magician and the expert in charms.3commanders of fifty and dignitaries, counselors, cunning magicians, and necromancers.
And I will make boys their princes, and infants shall rule over them.4"I will make youths their leaders, and unstable rulers will govern them."
And the people will oppress one another, every one his fellow and every one his neighbor; the youth will be insolent to the elder, and the despised to the honorable.5The people will oppress one another, man against man, neighbor against neighbor; the young will act arrogantly toward the old, and the worthless toward the honorable.
For a man will take hold of his brother in the house of his father, saying: “You have a cloak; you shall be our leader, and this heap of ruins shall be under your rule”;6A man will even seize his brother in his father's house, saying: "You have a cloak--you be our leader! This heap of rubble will be under your control."
in that day he will speak out, saying: “I will not be a healer; in my house there is neither bread nor cloak; you shall not make me leader of the people.”7On that day he will cry out, saying: "I'm not a healer. I don't even have food or clothing in my house. Don't make me the leader of the people!"
For Jerusalem has stumbled, and Judah has fallen, because their speech and their deeds are against the LORD, defying his glorious presence.8For Jerusalem has stumbled and Judah has fallen because they have spoken and acted against the LORD, defying his glorious presence.
For the look on their faces bears witness against them; they proclaim their sin like Sodom; they do not hide it. Woe to them! For they have brought evil on themselves.9The look on their faces testifies against them, and like Sodom, they flaunt their sin; they do not conceal it. Woe to them, for they have brought disaster on themselves.
Tell the righteous that it shall be well with them, for they shall eat the fruit of their deeds.10Tell the righteous that it will go well for them, for they will eat the fruit of their labor.
Woe to the wicked! It shall be ill with him, for what his hands have dealt out shall be done to him.11Woe to the wicked--it will go badly for them, for what they have done will be done to them.
My people—infants are their oppressors, and women rule over them. O my people, your guides mislead you and they have swallowed up the course of your paths.12Youths oppress my people, and women rule over them. My people, your leaders mislead you; they confuse the direction of your paths.
The LORD has taken his place to contend; he stands to judge peoples.13The LORD rises to argue the case and stands to judge the people.
The LORD will enter into judgment with the elders and princes of his people: “It is you who have devoured the vineyard, the spoil of the poor is in your houses.14The LORD brings this charge against the elders and leaders of his people: "You have devastated the vineyard. The plunder from the poor is in your houses.
What do you mean by crushing my people, by grinding the face of the poor?” declares the Lord GOD of hosts.15Why do you crush my people and grind the faces of the poor?" This is the declaration of the Lord GOD of Armies.
The LORD said: Because the daughters of Zion are haughty and walk with outstretched necks, glancing wantonly with their eyes, mincing along as they go, tinkling with their feet,16The LORD also says: Because the daughters of Zion are haughty, walking with heads held high and seductive eyes, prancing along, jingling their ankle bracelets,
therefore the Lord will strike with a scab the heads of the daughters of Zion, and the LORD will lay bare their secret parts.17the Lord will put scabs on the heads of the daughters of Zion, and the LORD will shave their foreheads bare.
In that day the Lord will take away the finery of the anklets, the headbands, and the crescents;18On that day the Lord will strip their finery: ankle bracelets, headbands, crescents,
the pendants, the bracelets, and the scarves;19pendants, bracelets, veils,
the headdresses, the armlets, the sashes, the perfume boxes, and the amulets;20headdresses, ankle jewelry, sashes, perfume bottles, amulets,
the signet rings and nose rings;21signet rings, nose rings,
the festal robes, the mantles, the cloaks, and the handbags;22festive robes, capes, cloaks, purses,
the mirrors, the linen garments, the turbans, and the veils.23garments, linen clothes, turbans, and shawls.
Instead of perfume there will be rottenness; and instead of a belt, a rope; and instead of well-set hair, baldness; and instead of a rich robe, a skirt of sackcloth; and branding instead of beauty.24Instead of perfume there will be a stench; instead of a belt, a rope; instead of beautifully styled hair, baldness; instead of fine clothes, sackcloth; instead of beauty, branding.
Your men shall fall by the sword and your mighty men in battle.25Your men will fall by the sword, your warriors in battle.
And her gates shall lament and mourn; empty, she shall sit on the ground.26Then her gates will lament and mourn; deserted, she will sit on the ground.
