The LORD spoke to Moses: "Go up from here, you and the people you brought up from the land of Egypt, to the land I promised to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, saying: I will give it to your offspring. | 1The LORD said to Moses, “Get going, you and the people you brought up from the land of Egypt. Go up to the land I swore to give to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. I told them, ‘I will give this land to your descendants.’ |
I will send an angel ahead of you and will drive out the Canaanites, Amorites, Hethites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites. | 2And I will send an angel before you to drive out the Canaanites, Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites. |
Go up to a land flowing with milk and honey. But I will not go up with you because you are a stiff-necked people; otherwise, I might destroy you on the way." | 3Go up to this land that flows with milk and honey. But I will not travel among you, for you are a stubborn and rebellious people. If I did, I would surely destroy you along the way.” |
When the people heard this bad news, they mourned and didn't put on their jewelry. | 4When the people heard these stern words, they went into mourning and stopped wearing their jewelry and fine clothes. |
For the LORD said to Moses: "Tell the Israelites: You are a stiff-necked people. If I went up with you for a single moment, I would destroy you. Now take off your jewelry, and I will decide what to do with you." | 5For the LORD had told Moses to tell them, “You are a stubborn and rebellious people. If I were to travel with you for even a moment, I would destroy you. Remove your jewelry and fine clothes while I decide what to do with you.” |
So the Israelites remained stripped of their jewelry from Mount Horeb onward. | 6So from the time they left Mount Sinai, the Israelites wore no more jewelry or fine clothes. |
Now Moses took a tent and pitched it outside the camp, at a distance from the camp; he called it the tent of meeting. Anyone who wanted to consult the LORD would go to the tent of meeting that was outside the camp. | 7It was Moses’ practice to take the Tent of Meeting and set it up some distance from the camp. Everyone who wanted to make a request of the LORD would go to the Tent of Meeting outside the camp. |
Whenever Moses went out to the tent, all the people would stand up, each one at the door of his tent, and they would watch Moses until he entered the tent. | 8Whenever Moses went out to the Tent of Meeting, all the people would get up and stand in the entrances of their own tents. They would all watch Moses until he disappeared inside. |
When Moses entered the tent, the pillar of cloud would come down and remain at the entrance to the tent, and the LORD would speak with Moses. | 9As he went into the tent, the pillar of cloud would come down and hover at its entrance while the LORD spoke with Moses. |
As all the people saw the pillar of cloud remaining at the entrance to the tent, they would stand up, then bow in worship, each one at the door of his tent. | 10When the people saw the cloud standing at the entrance of the tent, they would stand and bow down in front of their own tents. |
The LORD would speak with Moses face to face, just as a man speaks with his friend, then Moses would return to the camp. His assistant, the young man Joshua son of Nun, would not leave the inside of the tent. | 11Inside the Tent of Meeting, the LORD would speak to Moses face to face, as one speaks to a friend. Afterward Moses would return to the camp, but the young man who assisted him, Joshua son of Nun, would remain behind in the Tent of Meeting. Moses Sees the LORD’s Glory |
Moses said to the LORD, "Look, you have told me, 'Lead this people up,' but you have not let me know whom you will send with me. You said, 'I know you by name, and you have also found favor with me.' | 12One day Moses said to the LORD, “You have been telling me, ‘Take these people up to the Promised Land.’ But you haven’t told me whom you will send with me. You have told me, ‘I know you by name, and I look favorably on you.’ |
Now if I have indeed found favor with you, please teach me your ways, and I will know you, so that I may find favor with you. Now consider that this nation is your people." | 13If it is true that you look favorably on me, let me know your ways so I may understand you more fully and continue to enjoy your favor. And remember that this nation is your very own people.” |
And he replied, "My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest." | 14The LORD replied, “I will personally go with you, Moses, and I will give you rest—everything will be fine for you.” |
"If your presence does not go," Moses responded to him, "don't make us go up from here. | 15Then Moses said, “If you don’t personally go with us, don’t make us leave this place. |
How will it be known that I and your people have found favor with you unless you go with us? I and your people will be distinguished by this from all the other people on the face of the earth." | 16How will anyone know that you look favorably on me—on me and on your people—if you don’t go with us? For your presence among us sets your people and me apart from all other people on the earth.” |
The LORD answered Moses, "I will do this very thing you have asked, for you have found favor with me, and I know you by name." | 17The LORD replied to Moses, “I will indeed do what you have asked, for I look favorably on you, and I know you by name.” |
Then Moses said, "Please, let me see your glory." | 18Moses responded, “Then show me your glorious presence.” |
He said, "I will cause all my goodness to pass in front of you, and I will proclaim the name 'the LORD' before you. I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion." | 19The LORD replied, “I will make all my goodness pass before you, and I will call out my name, Yahweh, before you. For I will show mercy to anyone I choose, and I will show compassion to anyone I choose. |
But he added, "You cannot see my face, for humans cannot see me and live." | 20But you may not look directly at my face, for no one may see me and live.” |
The LORD said, "Here is a place near me. You are to stand on the rock, | 21The LORD continued, “Look, stand near me on this rock. |
and when my glory passes by, I will put you in the crevice of the rock and cover you with my hand until I have passed by. | 22As my glorious presence passes by, I will hide you in the crevice of the rock and cover you with my hand until I have passed by. |
Then I will take my hand away, and you will see my back, but my face will not be seen." | 23Then I will remove my hand and let you see me from behind. But my face will not be seen.” |
