"For the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire workers for his vineyard.1"The kingdom from heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire workers for his vineyard.
After agreeing with the workers on one denarius, he sent them into his vineyard for the day.2After agreeing to pay the workers one denarius a day, he sent them into his vineyard.
When he went out about nine in the morning, he saw others standing in the marketplace doing nothing.3When he went out about nine o'clock, he saw others standing in the marketplace without work.
He said to them, 'You also go into my vineyard, and I'll give you whatever is right.' So off they went.4He told them, 'You go into the vineyard, too, and I will pay you whatever is right.'
About noon and about three, he went out again and did the same thing.5So off they went. He went out again about noon and about three o'clock and did the same thing.
Then about five he went and found others standing around and said to them, 'Why have you been standing here all day doing nothing?'6About five o'clock he went out and found some others standing around. He asked them, 'Why are you standing here all day long without work?'
"'Because no one hired us,' they said to him. "'You also go into my vineyard,' he told them.7They told him, 'Because no one has hired us.' He told them, 'You go into the vineyard as well.'
When evening came, the owner of the vineyard told his foreman, 'Call the workers and give them their pay, starting with the last and ending with the first.'8"When evening came, the owner of the vineyard told his manager, 'Call the workers and give them their wages, beginning with the last and ending with the first.'
"When those who were hired about five came, they each received one denarius.9Those who were hired at five o'clock came, and each received a denarius.
So when the first ones came, they assumed they would get more, but they also received a denarius each.10"When the first came, they thought they would receive more, but each received a denarius as well.
When they received it, they began to complain to the landowner:11When they received it, they began to complain to the landowner,
'These last men put in one hour, and you made them equal to us who bore the burden of the day's work and the burning heat.'12These last fellows worked only one hour, but you paid them the same as us, and we've been working all day, enduring the scorching heat!'
"He replied to one of them, 'Friend, I'm doing you no wrong. Didn't you agree with me on a denarius?13"But he told one of them, 'Friend, I'm not treating you unfairly. You did agree with me for a denarius, didn't you?
Take what's yours and go. I want to give this last man the same as I gave you.14Take what is yours and go. I want to give this last man as much as I gave you.
Don't I have the right to do what I want with what is mine? Are you jealous because I'm generous?'15I am allowed to do what I want with my own money, am I not? Or are you envious because I'm generous?'
"So the last will be first, and the first last."16"In the same way, the last will be first, and the first will be last, because many are called, but few are chosen."
While going up to Jerusalem, Jesus took the twelve disciples aside privately and said to them on the way,17When Jesus was going up to Jerusalem, he took the twelve disciples aside and told them as they were walking along,
"See, we are going up to Jerusalem. The Son of Man will be handed over to the chief priests and scribes, and they will condemn him to death.18"See, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be handed over to the high priests and scribes, and they will condemn him to death.
They will hand him over to the Gentiles to be mocked, flogged, and crucified, and on the third day he will be raised."19Then they will hand him over to unbelievers to be mocked, whipped, and crucified, but on the third day he will be raised."
Then the mother of Zebedee's sons approached him with her sons. She knelt down to ask him for something.20Then the mother of Zebedee's sons came to Jesus with her sons. She bowed down in front of him to ask him for a favor.
"What do you want?" he asked her. "Promise," she said to him, "that these two sons of mine may sit, one on your right and the other on your left, in your kingdom."21He asked her, "What do you want?" She told him, "Promise that in your kingdom these two sons of mine will sit on your right and on your left."
Jesus answered, "You don't know what you're asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I am about to drink?" "We are able," they said to him.22Jesus replied, "You don't realize what you're asking. Can you drink from the cup that I'm going to drink from?" They told him, "We can."
He told them, "You will indeed drink my cup, but to sit at my right and left is not mine to give; instead, it is for those for whom it has been prepared by my Father."23He told them, "You will indeed drink from my cup. But it's not up to me to grant you a seat at my right hand or at my left. These positions have already been prepared for others by my Father."
When the ten disciples heard this, they became indignant with the two brothers.24When the ten heard this, they became furious with the two brothers.
Jesus called them over and said, "You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and those in high positions act as tyrants over them.25But Jesus called the disciples and said, "You know that the rulers of the unbelievers lord it over them and their superiors act like tyrants over them.
It must not be like that among you. On the contrary, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant,26That's not the way it should be among you. Instead, whoever wants to be great among you must be your servant,
and whoever wants to be first among you must be your slave;27and whoever wants to be first among you must be your slave.
just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."28That's the way it is with the Son of Man. He did not come to be served, but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many people."
As they were leaving Jericho, a large crowd followed him.29As they were leaving Jericho, a large crowd followed Jesus.
There were two blind men sitting by the road. When they heard that Jesus was passing by, they cried out, "Lord, have mercy on us, Son of David!"30When two blind men who were sitting by the roadside heard that Jesus was passing by, they shouted, "Have mercy on us, Lord, Son of David!"
The crowd demanded that they keep quiet, but they cried out all the more, "Lord, have mercy on us, Son of David!"31When the crowd told them harshly to be silent, they shouted even louder, "Have mercy on us, Lord, Son of David!"
Jesus stopped, called them, and said, "What do you want me to do for you?"32Jesus stopped and called them, saying, "What do you want me to do for you?"
"Lord," they said to him, "open our eyes."33They told him, "Lord, we want to be able to see!"
Moved with compassion, Jesus touched their eyes. Immediately they could see, and they followed him.34Then Jesus, deeply moved with compassion, touched their eyes, and at once they could see again. So they followed him.
