Berean Study Bible | New International Version |
For the choirmaster. A Maskil of the sons of Korah. We have heard with our ears, O God; our fathers have told us the work You did in their days, in the days of old. | 1For the director of music. Of the Sons of Korah. A maskil. We have heard it with our ears, O God; our ancestors have told us what you did in their days, in days long ago. |
With Your hand You drove out the nations and planted our fathers there; You crushed the peoples and cast them out. | 2With your hand you drove out the nations and planted our ancestors; you crushed the peoples and made our ancestors flourish. |
For it was not by their sword that they took the land; their arm did not bring them victory. It was by Your right hand, Your arm, and the light of Your face, because You favored them. | 3It was not by their sword that they won the land, nor did their arm bring them victory; it was your right hand, your arm, and the light of your face, for you loved them. |
You are my King, O God, who ordains victories for Jacob. | 4You are my King and my God, who decrees victories for Jacob. |
Through You we repel our foes; through Your name we trample our enemies. | 5Through you we push back our enemies; through your name we trample our foes. |
For I do not trust in my bow, nor does my sword save me. | 6I put no trust in my bow, my sword does not bring me victory; |
For You save us from our enemies; You put those who hate us to shame. | 7but you give us victory over our enemies, you put our adversaries to shame. |
In God we have boasted all day long, and Your name we will praise forever. Selah | 8In God we make our boast all day long, and we will praise your name forever. |
But You have rejected and humbled us; You no longer go forth with our armies. | 9But now you have rejected and humbled us; you no longer go out with our armies. |
You have made us retreat from the foe, and those who hate us have plundered us. | 10You made us retreat before the enemy, and our adversaries have plundered us. |
You have given us up as sheep to be devoured; You have scattered us among the nations. | 11You gave us up to be devoured like sheep and have scattered us among the nations. |
You sell Your people for nothing; no profit do You gain from their sale. | 12You sold your people for a pittance, gaining nothing from their sale. |
You have made us a reproach to our neighbors, a mockery and derision to those around us. | 13You have made us a reproach to our neighbors, the scorn and derision of those around us. |
You have made us a byword among the nations, a laughingstock among the peoples. | 14You have made us a byword among the nations; the peoples shake their heads at us. |
All day long my disgrace is before me, and shame has covered my face, | 15I live in disgrace all day long, and my face is covered with shame |
at the voice of the scorner and reviler, because of the enemy, bent on revenge. | 16at the taunts of those who reproach and revile me, because of the enemy, who is bent on revenge. |
All this has come upon us, though we have not forgotten You or betrayed Your covenant. | 17All this came upon us, though we had not forgotten you; we had not been false to your covenant. |
Our hearts have not turned back; our steps have not strayed from Your path. | 18Our hearts had not turned back; our feet had not strayed from your path. |
But You have crushed us in the lair of jackals; You have covered us with deepest darkness. | 19But you crushed us and made us a haunt for jackals; you covered us over with deep darkness. |
If we had forgotten the name of our God or spread out our hands to a foreign god, | 20If we had forgotten the name of our God or spread out our hands to a foreign god, |
would not God have discovered, since He knows the secrets of the heart? | 21would not God have discovered it, since he knows the secrets of the heart? |
Yet for Your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered. | 22Yet for your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered. |
Wake up, O Lord! Why are You sleeping? Arise! Do not reject us forever. | 23Awake, Lord! Why do you sleep? Rouse yourself! Do not reject us forever. |
Why do You hide Your face and forget our affliction and oppression? | 24Why do you hide your face and forget our misery and oppression? |
For our soul has sunk to the dust; our bodies cling to the earth. | 25We are brought down to the dust; our bodies cling to the ground. |
Rise up; be our help! Redeem us on account of Your loving devotion. | 26Rise up and help us; rescue us because of your unfailing love. |
