| 1For the LORD will have compassion on Jacob; once again He will choose Israel and settle them in their own land. | 9Sheol beneath is eager to meet you upon your arrival. It stirs the spirits of the dead to greet you—all the rulers of the earth. It makes all the kings of the nations rise from their thrones. | 9Sheol below is stirred up about you, ready to meet you when you arrive. It rouses the spirits of the dead for you, all the former leaders of the earth; it makes all the former kings of the nations rise from their thrones. |

| 13You said in your heart: “I will ascend to the heavens; I will raise my throne above the stars of God. I will rule on the mountain of assembly on the remote slopes of Zaphon. |

| 18All the kings of the nations lie in state, each in his own tomb. | 18As for all the kings of the nations, all of them lie down in splendor, each in his own tomb. |
| 19But you are cast out of your grave like a rejected branch, covered by those slain with the sword, and dumped into a rocky pit like a carcass trampled underfoot. | 19But you have been thrown out of your grave like a shoot that is thrown away. You lie among the slain, among those who have been slashed by the sword, among those headed for the stones of the pit, as if you were a mangled corpse. |
| 20You will not join them in burial, since you have destroyed your land and slaughtered your own people. The offspring of the wicked will never again be mentioned. | 20You will not be buried with them, because you destroyed your land and killed your people. | 21Prepare a place to slaughter his sons for the iniquities of their forefathers. They will never rise up to possess a land or cover the earth with their cities. | 21Prepare to execute his sons for the sins their ancestors have committed. | 22“I will rise up against them,” declares the LORD of Hosts. “I will cut off from Babylon her name and her remnant, her offspring and her posterity,” declares the LORD. | 22"I will rise up against them," says the LORD who commands armies. "I will blot out all remembrance of Babylon and destroy all her people, including the offspring she produces," says the LORD. |
| 23“I will make her a place for owls and for swamplands; I will sweep her away with the broom of destruction,” declares the LORD of Hosts. | 23"I will turn her into a place that is overrun with wild animals and covered with pools of stagnant water. I will get rid of her, just as one sweeps away dirt with a broom," says the LORD who commands armies. |
| 24The LORD of Hosts has sworn: “Surely, as I have planned, so will it be; as I have purposed, so will it stand. | 24The LORD who commands armies makes this solemn vow: "Be sure of this: Just as I have intended, so it will be; just as I have planned, it will happen. |
| 25I will break Assyria in My land; I will trample him on My mountain. | 27The LORD of Hosts has purposed, and who can thwart Him? His hand is outstretched, so who can turn it back? | 27Indeed, the LORD who commands armies has a plan, and who can possibly frustrate it? His hand is ready to strike, and who can possibly stop it? |
| 28In the year that King Ahaz died, this burden was received: | 28In the year King Ahaz died, this message was revealed: |
| 29Do not rejoice, all you Philistines, that the rod that struck you is broken. For a viper will spring from the root of the snake, and a flying serpent from its egg. | 29Don't be so happy, all you Philistines, just because the club that beat you has been broken! For a viper will grow out of the serpent's root, and its fruit will be a darting adder. |
| 30Then the firstborn of the poor will find pasture, and the needy will lie down in safety, but I will kill your root by famine, and your remnant will be slain. | 30The poor will graze in my pastures; the needy will rest securely. | 32What answer will be given to the envoys of that nation? “The LORD has founded Zion, where His afflicted people will find refuge.” | 32How will they respond to the messengers of this nation? Indeed, the LORD has made Zion secure; the oppressed among his people will find safety in her. |
