Berean Study Bible | International Standard Version |
These are the names of the sons of Israel who went to Egypt with Jacob, each with his family: | 1These are the names of the Israelis who entered Egypt with Jacob, each one having come with his family: |
Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah; | 2Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, |
Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin; | 3Issacar, Zebulun, Benjamin, |
Dan and Naphtali; Gad and Asher. | 4Dan, Naphtali, Gad, and Asher. |
The descendants of Jacob numbered seventy in all, including Joseph, who was already in Egypt. | 5All those who descended from Jacob totaled 75 persons. Now Joseph was already in Egypt. |
Now Joseph and all his brothers and all that generation died, | 6Then Joseph, all his brothers, and that entire generation died. |
but the Israelites were fruitful and increased rapidly; they multiplied and became exceedingly numerous, so that the land was filled with them. | 7But the Israelis were fruitful and increased abundantly. They multiplied in numbers and became very, very strong. As a result, the land was filled with them. |
Then a new king, who did not know Joseph, came to power in Egypt. | 8Eventually a new king who was unacquainted with Joseph came to power in Egypt. |
“Look,” he said to his people, “the Israelites have become too numerous and too powerful for us. | 9He told his people, "Look, the Israeli people are more numerous and more powerful than we are. |
Come, let us deal shrewdly with them, or they will increase even more; and if a war breaks out, they may join our enemies, fight against us, and leave the country.” | 10Come on, let's be careful how we treat them, so that when they grow numerous, if a war breaks out they won't join our enemies, fight against us, and leave our land." |
So the Egyptians appointed taskmasters over the Israelites to oppress them with forced labor. As a result, they built Pithom and Rameses as store cities for Pharaoh. | 11So the Egyptians placed supervisors over them, oppressing them with heavy burdens. The Israelis built the supply cities of Pithom and Rameses for Pharaoh. |
But the more they were oppressed, the more they multiplied and flourished; so the Egyptians came to dread the Israelites. | 12But the more the Egyptians afflicted the Israelis, the more they multiplied and flourished, so that the Egyptians became terrified of the Israelis. |
They worked the Israelites ruthlessly | 13The Egyptians ruthlessly forced the Israelis to serve them, |
and made their lives bitter with hard labor in brick and mortar, and with all kinds of work in the fields. Every service they imposed was harsh. | 14making their lives bitter through hard labor with mortar, bricks, and all kinds of outdoor labor. They ruthlessly imposed all this work on them. |
Then the king of Egypt said to the Hebrew midwives, whose names were Shiphrah and Puah, | 15Later, the king of Egypt spoke to the Hebrew midwives, one of whom was named Shiphrah and the other Puah. |
“When you help the Hebrew women give birth, observe them on the birthstools. If the child is a son, kill him; but if it is a daughter, let her live.” | 16"When you help the Hebrew women give birth," he said, "watch them as they deliver. If it's a son, kill him; but if it's a daughter, let her live." |
The midwives, however, feared God and did not do as the king of Egypt had instructed; they let the boys live. | 17But the midwives feared God and didn't do what the king of Egypt told them. Instead, they let the boys live. |
So the king of Egypt summoned the midwives and asked them, “Why have you done this? Why have you let the boys live?” | 18When the king of Egypt called for the midwives, he asked them, "Why have you done this and allowed the boys to live?" |
The midwives answered Pharaoh, “The Hebrew women are not like the Egyptian women, for they are vigorous and give birth before a midwife arrives.” | 19"Hebrew women aren't like Egyptian women," the midwives replied to Pharaoh. "They're so healthy that they give birth before the midwives arrive to help them." |
So God was good to the midwives, and the people multiplied and became even more numerous. | 20God was pleased with the midwives, and the people multiplied and became very strong. |
And because the midwives feared God, He gave them families of their own. | 21Because the midwives feared God, he provided families for them. |
Then Pharaoh commanded all his people: “Every son born to the Hebrews you must throw into the Nile, but every daughter you may allow to live.” | 22Meanwhile, Pharaoh continued commanding all of his people, "You're to throw every Hebrew son who is born into the Nile River, but you're to allow every Hebrew daughter to live." |
